Number 10 of the Top 12 Countdown of 2020 - Central Park: "Hot Oven"

So it comes to this, huh? Yeah, so we have a newcomer into the countdown. This and the other that will be brought up later on in the countdown and this was one of the episodes that made it into the list and arguably enough, coming from everyone who watched the show during the quarantine and knowing this page and yours truly doing Bob’s Burgers reviews for a living since 2014, yeah, the title of what the show I’m talking about pretty much gave it away because this has Loren Bouchard swimming around this particular series and coming in at the number 10 spot in the Top 12 countdown of 2020 is Central Park with the eighth episode of the show’s first season, titled “Hot Oven”.

In what fans arguably as possibly the best episode of the season, series so far cause Season 1 just wrapped up and waiting for Season 2 to arrive, I could possibly see why it is the best episode of the season other than...some episodes and the season have only 10 episodes and this is one of them. I now await the comments in the comment section with people saying, “Oh, you’re a Bob’s Burgers fan, right? And you’re a reviewer? How come you didn’t bother reviewing Central Park during the summer hiatus?” Aight, I get it. I’m not perfect, jeez. There’s a thing called long needed rest, do that once in a while in-between seasons.

The episode did start off strong with a musical number between both Molly and Brendan looking at their phones in their respective rooms in their homes and it may look like things are really clicking between these two throughout the season. Getting past the whole Molly feeling bad over the whole thing with her boy toy having an allergic reaction after eating a pint of peanut butter ice cream that you didn’t even freaking noticed that he has a peanut allergy. Though the whole thing is pretty much now water under the bridge, so they’re good and it looks like might be going well between both Molly and Branden that later on in the episode with her bringing him to her house...not knowing that Brandon here is uh...have a secret of his own though revealed in the previous episodes regarding his linage and who he is related to.

The rest of this portion of the episode is pretty much setting things up for Molly bringing Brandon to the Tillerman household with Owen wanting to cook a pizza, though the rest of the family, Molly, Cole, and Paige...Owen and cooking stuff, mostly pizza, is nothing more than a recipe for disaster when looking at the last time he cooked the pizza where the cheese, the tomato...the pie piece as a whole falls off and turning it into scrapings. Yeah, that’s not going to stop Owen from getting the pizza pie perfectly cooked for the dinner rush...until the oven catches on fire when talking to Birdie, doing narration to the viewers, and almost got caught. Guy got fired over that back in episode five and we don’t want the guy to lose his narration job for a second time and decided to help the guy out in getting the pizza cooked before the sunsets. Oh yeah, and there’s also the whole Bitsy posting a bad piece about the park that triggered both Owen and Paige and decided to get back at her by doodling some stuff on her image on the paper.

Oh yeah, there’s a subplot with Bitsy trying to Shampange’s good side. You know, obedience and whatnot and trying to get her dog to like her by having someone, a dog trainer, coming in and help her out with the dog/owner relationship but that’s pretty much it for the subplot where the episode is focused on two people, Molly and Brendan and hoping for the whole dinner thing to go well and not embarrass her in front of the guy. So technically, your normal parents want to meet the partner portion of the relationship even though they’re not dating. Just they barely met. Well...one of those questions that might be brought up when it comes to meeting the partner has to be the whole family thing. What the home life is like and most importantly, the lineage. Most importantly, Brendan’s linage.

Yep, Brendan telling Molly, on their way to the Tillerman household in the middle of the park, that he is a Brandenham and that he is related to Bitsy pretty much shook Molly and also finding out that maybe her parent shouldn’t draw stuff on the image of Bitsy on the paper when making that bad piece but that was before finding out that Brendan was a Brandenham and was related to Bitsy. Did I mention that in the last episode, the episode before this one, that he found out that Bitsy wants to buy the park and turn the general area into her property with new buildings and streets and whatnot and may have corrupted a public figure like the mayor to get her way? Yeah. Though to be fair, coming from the previous episode, the rest of the Brandenhem seem unphased over Bitsy’s proclamation of her planning on buying Central Park but clapped along with it though Brendan, who is there, not happy about the whole thing and tried to tell her aunt that buying the park and adding her property to the area is a terrible idea. So that leaves Molly in quite a pickle following the revelation and wants the dinner to be called off but that didn’t go through. So that leaves Molly to get Cole to do a little job for her, which is to prevent their mom from questioning Brendan. Yeah, that’s not gonna stop Paige from doing that.

And onto Owen, tagging along with Birdie, to the workshop to get the pizza cooked as quickly as possible without any issues whatsoever, which it did cook well to perfection and also for Birdie to pass the time and play with some manmade weapons without losing a limb because pretty sure we don’t want that in the ol’ limb department. Owen did get the pizza there in time and with damage but like with the Jets’ chances of getting the number one overall pick for the draft in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes, it comes crashing down. That and the Steelers’ chances of getting the one seed in the playoffs, the pizza comes crashing down and ending up on the floor. Only for Owen to pick it up and...have the family and Brendan to eat it through the five-second rule. Again, doesn’t apply in the COVID-19 era.

And now, Brendan brings up the whole “Bitsy planning on buying the park” part to the Tillerman family following wrapping up the dinner and possibly setting up on what could be a very long battle ahead to save the park from fallen into Bitsy’s grabby elderly hands. With Brendan feeling bad over the whole him being related to her and now finding out that her aunt is ready to make some moves to get the park like she’s playing a game of 3-D chess, rather than naming him as an “enemy” to the Tillermans over the whole park issue, because he’s with Molly and things may have been clicking along, rather than going with the Tina/Jimmy Jr route, they just straight-up accept him despite being a Brandemham and being related to Bitsy. Which, I do have to give them props for that and not treat Branden as an enemy to them after telling them about what Bitsy is doing. Again, it’s pretty much a long battle ahead after finding out that they now have a threat for the park and would be interesting if Brendan, rather than being at her aunt’s side, decided to side with the Tillermans, of course, have to wait for both him and Molly to hook up for what could be a family feud in the sidelines. That would be something.

But besides all of that, I could see why this episode was arguably a very good episode of the season during the show’s current run. It has a very strong start with a musical number between Molly and Brendan looking at their phones and pretty much set up where we’re going with the episode as a whole with Molly bringing Brendan for dinner at the household despite coming out about his family and who he is related to. Also enjoyed the whole little side plot with Owen trying to make the pizza perfect without any issues whatsoever and serves it to the family but it was bound to happen but no damage whatsoever I supposed. Oh yeah, and there was a subplot but...eh. I’ll say it’s there with Bitsy trying to get to Shampange’s head.

Though the episode did not disappoint in my opinion with the whole premise when it comes to Molly, especially with Brendan, the guy who she been crushing on since day one and thought that she thinks that she murdered guy over not knowing that she had peanut butter lips, but it was an interesting concept. Pretty much building these two up as potential love interest and hopefully the writers doesn’t pull any bullshit like we’re seeing with the Tina love front. God forbid if that were to happen in the future of the series. And though having Brendan being there in the previous episode with the rest of the Brandenham family, including Bitsy and also finding out that he’s related to her, pretty much setting things up for this episode when it comes to the dinner with the Tillermans and with what could possibly expect later on in the show as it goes on. Of course, when bringing up that Bitsy is after the park courtesy from the horse’s mouth, being Branden, just saying...long battle ahead for the sake of the park. And do enjoy that rather than deeming Branden with the enemy label, because he’s with Molly, he is now a friend to the Tillermans and now probably serving as a possible love interest for Molly and also same with Brendan for Molly. And I guess that’s where I place “Hot Oven” from Central Park at the number 10 spot in the Top 12 Countdown of 2020.
