Ladies and gentlemen...here we are...at long last...the end of the Top 12 Countdown of the year but also...the last day of the hellhole known only to everyone as the year 2020. It’s been a very long year...like no, seriously. It’s been a very long year that some still think that it’s still March and been trapped in a time loop for eons since the pandemic started back earlier in the year. But...here we are. End of the year. End of the countdown. Meaning that the series and episode that will be taking home the gold medal of the year and the number one spot of the Top 12 Countdown goes to...okay, everyone is not surprised over which series and episode got the number one spot since the whole countdown started just last week. Y’all already know what it is. It’s The Owl House with “Enchanting Grom Fright”.
Like seriously, is anyone not even shocked about which episode is going to take the number one spot of the year? Pretty much there’s some out there, once the countdown began. Once The Owl House enters the ring with a few episodes making the cut. The talks of “Enchanting Grom Fright” pops up. Thinking that it’s going to be in the Top 5. Top 3. And here we are, at the number one spot in the countdown. “Enchanting Grom Fright”, let’s wrap this puppy up.
If you take away the subplot of the episode with King and Gus performing during the grom event, this was a very good episode. Probably an S-tier at best regarding the main plot of the episode and of course, the two people being under the spotlight in both Luz and Amity. The episode that the Lumity shippers have been thriving and apparently, the episode did not disappoint. It was a very good episode with the two girls taking on Grom, which is pretty much the being that contains your deepest darkest fear, and of course...gay rights. Motherfucking gay rights. Gay motherfucking rights courtesy of the Lumity shippers.
Of course, the other bark on the tree with the episode and this will be brought up again later on in the post is the whole thing with Camila, Luz’s mom, and that while Luz and her mother did keep tabs with each other but also Luz keeping on lying to her mother on the phone about her whereabouts. Most of the people know that sooner or later, she will have to confront her mother. Telling her what really went down and whatnot. And some people had that in their season finale bingo card but...eh, that’s not the case anymore. I mean, the whole thing is there. Is just...they now need to rethink this through now. Thanks in part to Luz destroying her only pathway home to prevent Belos from invading the human realm.
Though the idea of grom seems rather interesting to the viewer on what it’s all about. Basically, it’s like prom but it’s nothing like your normal prom because, with this event, rather than the lucky couple or two people that the people have to cast their ballot on each random person, it’s the chosen student of Hexside ready to take on the being known as Grom, which is a being, probably an abomination, that can use your deep and darkest fear as a disadvantage to the chosen. And those who are unable to take it down would have like...oh, I don’t know...have everyone reside with their darkest fears haunting them for the rest of their lives. Oh yeah, and Amity was chosen for this year’s grom event. Meaning that she now has to face her fear when going up against the being.
Now, you think that, when seeing the episode for the first time, that Amity’s fear would be something like confronting her parents. Mostly because of the events of “Understanding Willow” and that both she and Willow made amends and apologized and if they were to find out, then things would not be going well. That would’ve been the first thought when it comes to her fear. But apparently, it’s not. That’s not the case. And that’s mostly because of a little plot device throughout the episode in the form of a piece of paper that turns out to be a gromposal for a very special someone who guess what? Decided to take the spot for her.
That someone being Luz Noceda, who decided to take the grom spot for Amity and thinks that it would be easy to tackle except that it’s Grom. Pretty sure this isn’t like Luz’s past encounters when she first came to the Boling Isles. I mean, this is your biggest fear we’re talking about. This is pretty much an episode of Fear Factor if you remember that show. Everyone’s livelihood is on the line if the being doesn’t get taken down. Amity did throw down some ground rules when Luz agrees to take her spot to take the monster come the night of the event while being bothered by Hooty crashing into the conversation and I gotta admit, do enjoy the moment where Amity snaps after Hooty invades her space with his head touching her face when it comes to the topic of worse nightmares. I mean, poor Hooty but he had it coming when it comes to invading people’s spaces.
Of course, you have Amity’s siblings, Eldric and Emira, as support for Luz to get ready for the big event with Luz saying her fears though we all know these fears that she stated, whether being a cat with a weird face or possibly a robocall, we all have that, was pretty much the icing on the cake from what her real fear is once the night arrives and comes face to face with Grom itself and what could be a very long night for Luz to deal. The big fear being…
Her own mother. Yeah, thought to myself when looking at the trailer for the second half of the season earlier in the summer that you would expect Luz’s mom, Camila, to slip right through the portal in the season finale, but that’s not the case for this one. It’s just Grom projecting Luz’s mom in front of her. I mean, let’s not forget, Luz’s whereabouts and doings while over at the Boiling Isles were kept hidden from her mother, and lied to her via text, thinking that she’s at camp. And her finding out that Luz was in the demon realm and learning how to become a witch...I know that we didn’t get that in the finale and I know that sooner or later, Camila will find out about her whereabouts...if it weren’t for Luz destroying the portal back home. Which...questions me one thing and that revolves around the very end of the episode and concerning around the portal to the human realm. Though Luz doesn’t believe that the being that is her mother is not actually her mother and ran off with Grom, taking the form of Camila, out of the school and deep into the woods. Thus, to the scene that made the Lumity shippers and the fandom, nay, the internet explode because this shit was trending on Twitter when the episode aired.
With Luz having nowhere to run from Grom, you thought Eda would step in and clean up the mess, but nope, here enter Amity to step in and protects Luz from Grom, only to be captured by Grom and experiences her fear, finding out that her biggest fear concerns around the note with the being ripping the paper into two as a form of rejection. But note the shape. You know what the monster is shaping of knowing the hairstyle throughout the episode. So that’s pretty much Amity’s fear, being rejected. But that doesn’t stop Luz from deciding to go with Amity to the dance...but as friends. You know Luz, sooner or later, you will find out who Amity has a crush on. And who she’s feeling red in the face for when being around you.
Oh yeah, and there was also the dance scene. And this is the very scene that no one ever shuts up about since the episode’s airing back in August. And I don’t blame them. This was a very good scene in the episode with both Luz and Amity both taking on Grom mixing both Amity’s abomination magic and Luz’s glyphs to put an end into Grom and giving him some magical laced ambien courtesy of the two girls. And the animation for the scene was actually pretty good with the movement of their rhythm when trying to come up with their skills to take on the being. Amity creating an abomination with her legs and Luz pulling out her glyphs like it’s pair of cards you pull from a deck in the middle of the table. Placing the glyph onto the head and marches it towards Grom, only for the being to explode courtesy of the two magic powers mixing into one and made the being explode like...well, a bomb. It’s been a long year, alright. Cut me some slack. But other than that, this was a pretty amazing scene with amazing animation and despite being shipping fuel that exploded the internet, it was worth it. I enjoyed it. And despite the fanservice with both Luz and Amity dancing, not to mention, giving Lumity shippers massive amounts of power, this was the highlight of the episode, bar none. Then of course, there’s this.
The whole Camila receiving Luz’s letters thing even though...it wasn’t even Luz who wrote the letters. Someone else wrote the letters to her mother and even noting the misspelling in Luz’s name. Meaning that something is sus about all of this. Being both the signature and also how and where and who sent the letters. Now, it’s too early to name names on who the people who are responsible for all of this but looking at the candidates being responsible...it’s a long list. Okay, have to go back to it with Amity’s handwriting and comparing it to the handwriting in the letters that was sent to Camila. Again, it’s too early to say. Though with the portal now gone thanks to Luz destroying her only shot to get back home, if the letters weren’t to be pass through and delivered to Camila, yeah, there could be some concerns. Which pretty much strikes me when doing “Young Blood, Old Souls” in the number six spot, and this is very much a longshot and possibly stupid idea that maybe, other than the portal that Belos is making at the end of that episode...beginning to suspect there might be another portal. There has to be more than one of those bad boys, not counting the one that Belos is making. As for who, again, too early to say...but something tells me it could possibly be someone who is close to Luz. Again, it’s a longshot and hopefully Season 2 comes out probably around later in 2021. So uh...yeah. Way to an episode after witnessing shipping fuel at it’s finest.
But yeah, here we are at the end of the countdown with “Enchanting Grom Fright” from The Owl House taking the gold medal in the Top 12 Countdown and again, I really enjoyed the episode all together. While the subplot with Gus and King was alright but somewhat forgettable despite entertaining, the main plot pretty much stole the show with Luz and Amity with these two girls fighting against Grom after Luz takes the spot of being chosen in behest of Amity and it wasn’t even easy for those two, especially Luz because of her keeping on lying to her mother over what she’s been doing. Though the dance scene with the two girls taking down Grom was absolutely beautiful in animation and in execution, that was pretty much the highlight for me and I for one loved it. And of course, setting up some seeds for the new season coming in like...probably later in 2021 maybe with the whole fake letters sent to Camila, hopefully that would be solved. But that does it with the countdown with “Enchanting Grom Fright” taking the number one spot in the Top 12 Countdown.
And also ends the year known as 2020 at the time of this posting for some in the Eastern Hemisphere and...well...let’s face it, 2020 is a shit year. It’s a fucking shit year. We almost had a world war to begin the decade. And now here we are, in the middle of the pandemic that kicked all our asses, we made it through to the end. It was a very long road to get to point A to point B with the everything burning as the world keeps turning. But 2020...while it’s no 536 AD, while it was a shit year for everyone, for the page, it was a surprising run in a shit year. I mean, my old laptop died back in February and the show, being the Bob’s Burgers reviews, still keeps on going despite being downgraded to using my sister’s Chromebook for the time being. But look where I am now...with a new laptop that I really need to renew some shit before things go bad to start off the new year but despite all of that, I wanna thank y’all for sticking around throughout the year and supporting me for the past 12 months...well 11...no wait, 10 because summer months is pretty much an empty hole but still, I wanna thank everyone for the support and for reading the posts and content I made, and hopefully...no, no, I don’t want to jinx the new year. We did that last year and look how that happened. Just scream “Jumanji” as the clock strikes midnight, do that.
