Hope everyone got their Christmas presents shipped out via any online retailer because if you do end up getting it from the mail…just uh…don’t pop any bubbles. Just…don’t, alright. Our Top 20 Countdown enters its fourth day as we countdown to 2019 and coming in at Number 17 showcases The Doctor and her companion, yes, her, the new Doctor’s a woman, investigating something wrong going on when heading down to the headquarters of an online delivery service in “Kerblam!”
Again, kinda felt cheated on what to do with the list. More of what episode is gonna be on this spot when it comes to adding Doctor Who into list. It’s either this or “Demons of the Punjab” and well, it looks like “Keblam!” might’ve taken this spot and not gonna lie, this was a very good episode to watch.
Thought it was gonna be another random filler episode in the new series now in the books, but no, it was good. And weird that this was a good episode…that wasn’t written by the headwriter. So uh…if I were Chibnall…
But despite all that, it was a good episode. It’s mostly The Doctor, Ryan, Yaz, and Graham going undercover into Kerblam headquarters after The Doctor got a message from someone when she got her package from the business. And yes, plot hole planted the seed for them to head down to the headquarters and find the culprit responsible for something bad that been going on.
Pretending to be new workers and get in their positions with Yaz in boxing duty, Ryan and The Doctor in wrapping duty, and Graham…Graham, thanks to The Doctor switching places with the leg brace that tells you where you go to work, gets the role of caretaker.
The characters of Dan and Kira…yeah, we know that they’re gonna die because it’s Doctor Who and whenever there’s a character that was introduced that mostly ended up being focused being too long and telling their stories, welp, you’re not gonna survive to the end of the episode. But how they died…good god, that was brutal.
Mostly towards the scene with The Doctor and Graham walking towards what appears to be a barrel that is filled with liquid. Only the liquid is…people. People became liquid. Like what the fuck, that happened. That…happened. This…and bubble wrap. Call back to the classic series with “The Ark in Space” with the bubble wrap when the whole fungus thing, taking over people’s bodies.
It’s like anything that use in everyday life like bubble wrap or statues or Wi-Fi, it’s like nothing sacred is safe from being turned scary from the Doctor Who writers. It’s like with JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure with Stands if you know where I’m going with this. But yeah, them being incinerated by the bubble wrap…one pop and boom, out you go. And I thought that Kiera gonna die first because, trope. Nope, Dan dies first. But man, Kiera’s death…jeez. Jeez. And Yaz, Ryan, and Charlie had to watch it despite trying to tell Kiera to not opening the box and find an entrance. And of course, the speculation of who’s the villain of the episode.
Being the last person who you ever think of. This episode is pretty much a massive speculation game on who’s the antagonist of the episode. Everyone thought that it was gonna be the Kerblam bots because, they’re robots and I know that the whole robot uprising seems kind of cheesy and overused, but you’ll never know. But no, it’s not the bots. So maybe it points towards Julie Hesmondhalgh’s character. Nope. Not her. Maybe it’s Callum Dixon’s character, the boss…nope. Not him. The Doctor and crew tried that and it wasn’t him. That’s where the finger pointing now comes towards Charlie, the maintenance man working for the business. The last person who you ever expect to be the villain.
And the reason is mostly simple. It’s mostly whole idea of technology and how people are losing their jobs to machines. Being the percentage of people with 10% being humans and 90% being robots. And slowly, slowly being risen for the machines and for the humans, being cut down. And he can’t just do nothing about it. Yeah, a normal person when finding out that machines are gonna take your jobs would most likely go on strike and tell the boss to not go through that. Not go the whole nine years and attack some of your co-workers and planning on attacking the customers with the bubble wrap and turning them into people jam. That’s not activism. That’s straight down murder. I mean frick, Charlie had a thing for Kiera…and she was one of the targets for that explosive bubble wrap in a box. Like…that’s really heartless and messed up to watch over.
Of course, that lead to Charlie’s demise when The Doctor, with the help of the service bot to get the Kerblam bots ready to go online and ready to follow directions, to send the explosive bubble wrap package to where they are, to where Charlie is at. The bots ready to open it and everyone tried to get Charlie to get out there but…down he goes. Boom with Charlie staying behind and The Doctor and everyone teleported away into safety.
But yeah, it was a pretty good episode, sorry about having this list being so short. Though, it’s my list, it was supposed to be short and somewhat sweet. So the reason why this episode got the Number 17 spot in the Top 20 Countdown is that this one was an intriguing one at best within the eleventh series of the revived series of Doctor Who.
It’s mostly to the fact of this episode being two things, this being a speculation game of who’s the villain of the episode when it comes to why The Doctor and crew got a distress call from, not a worker in the form of a human, but from a service bot. And the other being the whole thing with the idea of machines replacing humans when it comes to the workspace with the building being 10% human and 90% machine, worried coming from Charlie over the idea of machines replacing the humans as the workers that made him go all on a murderous vibe with the bubble wrap. And no one sees the idea of Charlie being the one who is responsible for the people going missing. No one does. Pretty sure there’s some who saw that coming. But mostly as a joke…that later make the joke no longer funny for laughs.
The story progression was handled well. The acting was handled well. The mystery element was there and wasn’t straight up predictable. And I like how the whole element playing out in the episode wasn’t a straight up predictable tire fire. The visuals was alright to gloss over. Mostly around the whole conveyor belt scene with Charlie, Ryan, and Yaz traveling down. Although that the CGI and the background seems like something you see from a low budget television show, it didn’t somewhat downplayed that. So it was somewhat okay for what was supposed to be some wild ride down to the I guess the basement of the building? Yeah, leaning towards basement. Leaning towards basement. So yeah, all and all, this episode was one big guessing game with a mystery that wasn’t straight up predictable, leaving the people for more with the speculation of the whole antagonist of the episode.
So that’s that for Number 17. And if you think that this episode was the only one to be the list? Well, there’s another one waiting in the wings and yeah, I think we all know what episode I’m referring to. So that’s about it about the seventeenth spot in the Top 20 Countdown. Tune in tomorrow as a father and his friend going down the lengths to rescue his son from prison…only for…you know, wait till tomorrow for the Number 16 in the Top 20 Countdown list of 2018.
