Another year is about to come to a close, meaning that it’s that special time of year where we countdown to the new year with the top 20 episodes, in my list, to see which series and episode won the year. Recapping and all that. As for the year 2018 over at the entertainment industry…
Yeah…that seems about right. Anyway, welcome one and all to another series of the Top 20 Countdown for now the year 2018. In less than 20 days, we’re about to enter the year 2019 and we say goodbye to the current year, this year, we reflect…when it comes to the ratings, counting down from the number twenty to one. And we begin the countdown with what appears to be a set up to a potential war but two people decided to have a peaceful talk and tries to not have a war break out. Coming in number twenty in the Top 20 Countdown for 2018 is “Gumbaldia”, the Twelfth Episode of Season Nine of Adventure Time.
Kinda felt cheated with this added to the list. And at the last possible minute no less on which episode from any series would kick off the list for this year? It’s either this or the Steven Universe episode that was released online after Comic Con earlier this year but can’t do that because it’s not on the air yet until Monday here in the States. So that one pretty much eliminated itself from the premise. Because spoilers and whatnot. So it looks like this episode has come into play to kick off the countdown.
This episode was pretty much the set up to the series finale, which is on the list for this year but I’ll never tell y’all what number the series finale landed in. But yeah, this episode was pretty much the set up to the said series finale since Adventure Time did end earlier this year. And despite all that, it was a good episode to be honest. And not in a sarcastic manner.
It’s mostly Finn and Jake, after Finn sees that Princess Bubblegum is prepping up for a potential all out war against her uncle, Uncle Gumbald, despite being a family issue and not the type of family issue that would result in thousands, if not, millions, losing their lives over a petty feud. So the duo decided to a trip down to where Gumbald and his family are at so they can have a nice little chat and of course, have a peaceful resolution rather than having an all-out war.
Once arriving there in what appears to be Gumbald’s version of the Candy Kingdom, almost feels like as well, when they got stopped by Fern and straight up attacking him. Let’s not forget that Fern, after Finn decimated his ass, pieces of him got picked up by Gumbald back in Season 8 following him trapping and leaving Finn behind because he’s sick and tired of being the “backup Finn” and being in the sidelines and doing nothing to do that resulted in him getting torn into pieces by Finn and Gumbald decided to revive him and make him into the Green Knight that we know since his return back in “Seventeen”. It’s like in football when you got the quarterback position, only to be named as the backup to the starter and the starter isn’t getting injured nor ejected and decided to do drastic measures to get the starter position. That or patience. Mostly patience. So as Finn and Jake take on Fern…
Aunt Lolly comes into play. Coming down the stairs, telling Fern to stand down and head back to his quarters and allow Finn and Jake to come inside the castle. So find out that Finn and Jake aren’t the only ones who don’t want this silly potential war to break out because Aunt Lolly also don’t want to happen. It’s like, “Okay, good! We found someone from the other side who can be rational and don’t want this war to break out.” It be shame if she were to betray that and join in the cause to help Gumbald in the war, right?
The three now enter the room where Cousin Chicle and Uncle Gumbald are busy doing their own thing, or in this case, Chicle painting a portrait of Gumbald. With Aunt Lolly now exiting the room, both Finn and Jake decided to have a nice little chat with Gumbald as he shows them a tour of the castle. Finn telling Gumbald that he and Princess Bubblegum are must alike that despite being leaders in their own respective kingdoms, they’re both highly intelligent and mass builders when it comes to science and machinery. One being a giant cake robot that Gumbald built that is ready to be used to take on Bubblegum and her army once the war comes into play. But when Gumbald told Finn and Jake that he’ll be the Cake to use it to crush Bubblegum, Finn now retracts the idea of him (Gumbald) and Bubblegum being the same once he told his idea of how the machine will be use in the war. Like Finn has truly given up trying to get Gumbald to stop the war and have peace because nothing can get to Gumbald to change his mind. He’s the antagonist. What you do think that was gonna happen? Have a long therapeutic talk, drink tea, and sing kumbaya and pretend the whole escalation that could lead up to a potential war to break out never happen? Because that’s pretty much what we’re getting from Finn failed to get Gumbald to change his mind on the war. Nothing is gonna change his mind.
Until a mishap happened and Gumbald was about to fall towards his death, falling down from the top until Finn and Jake, with the help of Jake and his stretching abilities, saves Gumbald from getting the axe. And that right there finally got Gumbald to change his mind. But if you’re like smart enough to see what happened with this very scene, you think about it like you’re thinking of yourself, “Y-yeah, no. Even with Finn and Jake saved Gumbald, there’s no way in hell that Gumbald is gonna accept the peace offer.”
They had a feast to celebrate the peace offering. Telling them the past events from the series. Nice that we’re having that little callback since the series is ending, well, the series is already over with, but this was back in March, so…yeah. Just as Finn and Jake are about to head out back to the Candy Kingdom to relay the message to Bubblegum that the war has been called off, Chicle threw liquid at them with the confetti falling from the ceiling in celebration like how you see in games where a team has won the championship and you see some of the players dunking the coach in sports drink in celebration. It’s pretty much with Chicle dunking the liquid into Finn and Jake. Making them shine as they now head back to the Candy Kingdom.
Giving Princess Bubblegum the details that the war has finally not broke out and that peace has been finally been made. And just as Bubblegum was about to hug Finn for his hard work for trying to make peace for the two nations, she noticed the smell coming from both Finn and Jake and once Peppermint Butler cleaned the duo off with a towel. Well…
Yep. Turned Peppermint Butler into a child. The peace treaty is broken. We have ourselves a war on our hands. That pretty much peeved Bubblegum off and thus, we now have a war between the Candy Kingdom and Uncle Gumbald. Seeing the Candy Citizens getting the weapons they need as the army is now assembling to what looks like we’re gonna have ourselves a very long, yet ugly war to witness. This was back in March and that got people on the edge of their seats and were to expect what’s the outcome is gonna play out with what was a small family feud between niece and uncle now turns to millions of lives at risk with an all-out brawl. And poor, poor Finn, now watching the citizens setting up their weapons and having the army assembling and are about to head out to where Gumbald is at. And now, he’s gonna end up getting the crossfire as well.
Oh, and speaking of callbacks, Gumbald, Lolly, and Chicle assembled their own army to take on Bubblegum and the Candy Kingdom. Other than Fern, we have the past villains from the series now playing a role in the final episode of the series. Or as Gumbald is deeming the title to his army, the “Legion of Candy Kingdom Haters”. And that legion includes the characters of Ricardio (the heart that was inside the Ice King and was supposed to take Bubblegum’s heart), Bandit Princess (the one who stole Finn’s Finn sword that later turned into Fern at the end of Season 7), Samantha (one of two individuals alongside Jake who were trapped by Ke-oth), Peace Master (an individual who tried to take out a threat of dark magic coming from Peppermint Butler), Me-Mow (the assassin who tried to take out Wildberry Princess and revenge on both Finn and Jake), Pete Sassafras (who Finn and Jake accuses him of robbing Lumpy Space Princess), Ash (Marceline’s ex-boyfriend who sold her childhood item to Maja the Sky Witch), Sir Slicer, Scorcher (the hitman that Ice King hired to take out Finn and Jake), the Green Knight/Fern of course, and of course, the Ice King…for some reason. Like really? The Ice King? I know he and the Candy Kingdom…yeah, he tried to capture Bubblegum into marrying him. But that was all in the past. Things changed. And I can see a lot of people in between this one and the series finale between March and September how this was gonna play out. But no, I think it’s mostly confusion…cause…Ice King. There for comedic relief. Oh and if you were hoping for them to play a massive role to take on everyone in the war? Since the series is over with…prepared to be disappointed.
So why did this episode landed in the Number 20 spot in the Top 20 Countdown? Again, feel cheated over picking the episode over other episodes to kick off the list. But this episode was pretty much a good setup to the series finale.
I like Finn and Jake are determined to not have the war to break out between Bubblegum and Gumbald. And they did their damned best to get the cause rolling and not have a major conflict getting from bad to worse that would result in the worst case scenario of having thousands, if not, millions on the verge of losing their lives. And the duo don’t want that to happen. Not in the form of having blood, or in this case, juice, on their hands. No, they’re playing pacifist and tried to have Gumbald to not escalate the feud to turn into a massive war. And they did succeed on doing that after saving Gumbald from getting the axe, until the whole thing with the dum-dum juice and Lolly being a part of the kickoff to the war, and then everything fell to shit.
But it was a good episode. It was the perfect setup for the series finale despite being a six month wait full of speculations and theories and whatnot. And as for the series finale, of course, in the beginning, is in the list. But of course, not gonna tell you where the series finale is listed. So you’re gonna have wait. Or if the slump strikes back or my computer crashes in the middle of the night come like around…Friday night, then…uh…good luck speculating to ever lasting nothingness in the form of the void.
