Fandom Update: Adventure Time Distant Lands 2021 Update + Dragon Ball Super Movie News

Day 1 of what is pretty much a three-day hassle of a weekend has been a wrap, for yours truly of course. And with that, come the recaps from each panel that ever piqued my interest and this is one of them regarding the first day of the three-day weekend while being stuck at home for the second year in a row before heading back to going to conventions in-person come 2022...unless the Delta variant of the coronavirus decided to have different ideas for next year as some sort of sick joke. So let’s talk about Comic-Con for Day 1 and it looks like we may have some information regarding one of the shows if you haven’t read the title of the article, and that is Distant Lands.

When looking through the panel from start to finish much a grin to the virtual panels last year during the height of the pandemic, everything is pre-recorded weeks, if not, months in advance. Y’all know which shows I’m talking about once the weekend drags on while their seasons are still going on. Speaking of last year, Adventure Time: Distant Lands. In the panel almost 12 months ago, the cast and crew of the show talked about the first two episodes of the hour-long series from HBO Max, “BMO” as a recap a month before that panel and “Obsidian”, which was the next one up which dropped later that year in November. This time around, it’s “Together Again”, which was the episode that dropped back in May of this year with “Wizard City”, which is the last episode of the Distant Lands series and obviously the Adventure Time franchise as a whole coming out later this year.

Talking about “Together Again”, which was first on the agenda for the panel for the day is all recaps with some of the members who appeared on the panel, mostly both Distant Lands producer Adam Muto and voice actor for Jake, John DiMaggio, sharing their thoughts about the episode and Distant Lands as a whole following the end of the original series back in 2018. Guess it’s probably the whole nostalgia feel when working on the show and the episode when seeing various characters popping up in through various scenes. Spoiler alert for people who haven’t seen it yet, but it did include characters that we are all familiar in a range from Lumpy Space Princess to Tree Trunks, in which the episode of the episode have it dedicated to her voice actress, Polly Lou Livingston, who passed away at the start of this year. To the big bad himself and no, it’s not Grob from the second half of the finale of the original series. It’s The Lich. That came out of nowhere. It was great to have his voice actor, Ron Perlman, reprising his role for the episode.

My only thought for the episode back in May when looking at Finn and Jake taking center stage, especially with Finn going on a quest through various levels of the otherworld in search for Jake in hopes to die together, which pretty much give away the answer for what happened to the guy back in “Obsidian” regarding the Jake tattoo that Finn got on his chest. The thought process of the episode is that this feels like a finale.

Not kidding, this almost feels like the series finale regarding Finn and Jake in the otherworld, seeing old characters for the last time. Though it would be somewhat meta if that episode ended with Finn and Jake’s reincarnation that we saw at the start and end of “Come Along With Me”. Just putting it out there. Well, regarding the old characters popping up in the episode, even if it was short, Billy didn’t make the cut. Same for Bubblegum, Marceline, Minerva, Martin, Betty, BMO, Flame Princess. Anyone one of those hasn’t made the cut. Though Bubblegum and Billy were mentioned in the episode, so at least there’s that. Other than saying all of that, feels weird that this episode got the third spot despite that it almost feels like a finale and would’ve saved for last, but...to each of their own I guess. Nonetheless, good episode.

Now to “Magic City”, which is the fourth and final episode of the hour-long series and we got key art for it once it hits on HBO Max later in the year. No reveal on a date, but I guess we’ll have to wait once either the teaser or trailer hits around...let’s say either September or October with the episode to drop either October or November, much like with “Obsidian”. The key art showcases a young Peppermint Butler, which reveals who is going to be taking the spotlight for the episode. Showcasing Pep’s past in him enrolling in a school within Wizard City. Finally about to get some answers on how in the ever-living crap Peppermint Butler know anything about magic that he used throughout the original series. That was never touched upon to be talked about, but it looks like we’re finally getting it once the Autumn hits.

Not to mention that we got three new voice actors who will be lending their voices for the episode. I guess two newcomers with Mace Montgomery Miskel, who will be taking the role of a young Peppermint Butler, rather Pep. Bex Taylor-Klaus taking the role of Blaine. And then we get to Toks Olagundoye, who will be taking the role of Dr. Caledonius, which I think that character will be a mentor to a young Pep for the upcoming episode. Guess we’ll see about that once “Wizard City” hits HBO Max later this year, possibly around the Autumn timeframe. Only time can tell.

Of course, gotta throw in some minor Dragon Ball news to sprinkle into the mix with the Day 1 panel along with Adventure Time. Looks like we got the title for the new movie set for release in 2022, around the May 9 timeframe. May 9...Goku. Goku Day. Get it? Because “gou” means five and “kyu” means nine in Japanese. We also got a title for the film set for release next year, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which is the name of the movie once it hits theaters in Japan and around the world, though it said that release dates for some parts of the world might vary. Now the name...apparently, and I took down some notes when being away for a bit to do some errands, wanting to focus on the superhero genre. And because you stuff coming from both Marvel and DC showing some leverage into the genre that everyone back in the day would think that it’s box office poison.

Though when giving some thoughts on the movie title, at first, I thought that why they would name the movie “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero”, my first thought would somewhat focus on Gohan because you remember when he dressed up as the Great Saiyaman at the start of the Buu saga when he enrolled into high school. That was the first thought in the thought bank. And I think that would be fair for Gohan to give his time to shine. But again, all we got is a teaser and it showcases Goku, nothing wrong with that. Though some fans may be thrown off with the CG when mixing 2D with 3D, thus showing signs of skepticism for the film once 2022 hits.

Closing things off for the recap with some designs. We got Piccolo’s design, nothing new except for the change of color with the arms from pink to yellow. You have Krillin in a police uniform with his eyes filled in. And then, of course, you have Pan in a school uniform, showing that she aged up a bit from an infant in the anime to possibly two, three, possibly four, five years old. Showcasing that we’re years later after the events of the Broly movie. And let’s not forget that Super is set in between the end of the Buu saga and the end of the Z series. So if Pan aged up a few years based on the design, that means that both Goten and Trunks may have gotten older a tad bit. But let’s not forget that we got a background design of a waterfall and lake and if you look closely in the image above...yep, that is Piccolo’s house.

Yeah, that’s something. Seeing Piccolo having a house of his own when seeing that I don’t recall Piccolo ever having a house. Sure, he probably lived in the area, but just float and meditate and then there’s him staying over the Hideout at the end of the Cell saga. Although when looking at the idea of Piccolo having a house, I think back to that scene from TeamFourStar with Piccolo and Nail having a chat before being interrupted by Kami. Going back and forth about the house situation. That’s pretty much the first thought that came into mind. But other than that, Dragon Ball will be getting a new movie next year. And if y’all were hoping for the anime to come back...yeah, that wait is going to have to continue.

But besides all that, guess that’ll do it for Day 1 of recaps for Comic-Con. Tomorrow and Sunday are the next two days incoming with July 24 being both The Owl House and Central Park and on July 25, we have three shows to cover in the forms of Doctor Who, The Great North, and Bob’s Burgers.
