Number 8 of the Top 12 Countdown of 2021 - Final Space: "Forgiveness"

Onto the number eight spot in the Top 12 Countdown as we arrived at the Christmas season and looks what do we have here? Final Space made it back into the countdown with another episode from its third season in yet another reminder to Warner that they should really resurrect the show back from the dead. But besides all that, Final Space makes it returns to the countdown after ranking “The Ventrexian” in the number 11 spot earlier in the countdown and now going into the number 8 spot on Christmas Eve, this is “Forgiveness” from Final Space taking the aforementioned eighth spot in the 2021 countdown.

And look at that, we continue on the saga regarding Avocato carrying a giant weight on his back ever since finding out that he was the one who killed the King and Queen of Ventrexia, which revealed to be the biological parents of Little Cato and remember back in my take on “The Ventrexian” with the number 11 spot of the countdown when I mentioned that moment from this episode about the fight between Gary and Avocato?

Yep, we get that in this episode and this scene was pretty much the most anticipated moment for the entire season, one of the many moments that was anticipated when the trailer to the season was dropped last December. And we’ll get to that in a bit because while the episode has both Gary and Avocato talking about Little Cato because dude can’t even catch a fucking break whenever the crew like to throw something at him whether being held prisoner by the Lord Commander, watching Avocato die for the first time, getting him back only to lose his memories and then get possessed by Invictus just as he starting to remember. Pretty much being treated as the crew’s punching bag, both him and Avocato. However, Little Cato isn’t the only member of the crew that had to deal a lot of shit to the point where if the show hasn’t been canceled by the networks, he would’ve gone through a boatload of therapy. But he won’t be the only one who might need it because we might as well address the elephant in the room.

And that being Ash Graven. Like Little Cato, also dealt with a lot of shit in her lifetime and like him, a long traumatic list to state. Watched her sister Harp being sacrificed to a giant serpent and then die right in front of her, witnessing Nightfall, whom she thinks is a mother figure to her, sacrificing herself to be the sixth key to open up Final Space, watching her adoptive brother Fox getting possessed after being unable to free him due to her broken fingers by the Lord Commander and to add the icing on the cake from the previous episode, watching her brother getting killed off by Gary, even though that was all Invictus fucking her around and pushing her buttons like if Invictus almost knew that Ash wouldn’t to their bidding and messing things with her would likely be the only way to...well, I guess break her.

So I guess it’s fitting that the episode started with Fox’s funeral as everyone is saying their goodbyes to their fallen comrade with Ash feeling angry over what happened and Gary on the sidelines with him feeling bad for what happened that angered her in thinking that he did it on purpose, even though again, that was all Invictus’ doing, no matter how much that could convince Ash that it was all a misunderstanding. But it’s not enough once Ash leaves the ship to get her mind off of things...

Only to meet an interstellar being, named Evra, and the two quickly become friends as the episode drags on. And at first, when watching the episode, knowing that they’re still in Final Space, I thought that Evra would be nothing more than a trap for Ash. Possibly as another one of Invictus’ tricks to mess with Ash as if killing Fox off and having Gary take the blame isn’t even his fault. Though, besides Little Cato, who is one of the people from the crew that Ash can trust, she has quickly formed a good friendship with Evra (and something more) and vents to her after a moment of destroying stuff to take Ash’s mind off of things. Boy, I don’t know what Evra’s reaction would be if they were to find out about what Ash did at the end of the season. But it was a nice subplot with Ash getting her mind off of things after witnessing Fox’s death and I know that Ash later on in the season...yeah. It was nice for Ash to get her mind off of things and consider this subplot to the episode as the calm before the storm at the end of the season.

And the eulogy from Little Cato was nice just as he and the rest of the crew are prepared to send Fox’s casket to space. Giving Fox his final farewell to someone who once didn’t get along because of their species’ history with each other but as each time pass by, despite being total opposites and encountering each moment from the past season, it almost feels like both Little Cato and Fox were slowly becoming friends and now because of what happened, it feels like he just lost that friend and just as they were just starting to get along.

But we got to talk about the main course of the episode. The highlight to all of this and that is being the whole argument, fight, venting between Gary and Avocato. And man, talk about the wrong possible time to bring up the notion of Avocato killing Little Cato’s biological parents. Especially after hosting a funeral for Fox. And Avocato was the one who brought it up to Gary, shocking him about what happened and wanting Avocato to tell Little Cato about what happened just as they start beating the shit out of each other. And man, the tone, the setting, the acting, and the direction...I know that the fandom is now giving me the stink eye on why I gave the episode at number 8 because of everything that’s been throwing at us, especially with the fight that was anticipated from the trailer to the season when it was first dropped last year as it was one of the scenes that the fans were most anticipated to see and man, it was delivered perfectly.

The raw emotions from Gary and Avocato and the acting coming from both Olan Rogers and Coty Galloway in this episode were top-notch. They were really giving it all to make this episode impactful and I’m not going to lie to y’all, I applaud their dedication and hard work built into this episode. And it’s just not during the fight between Gary and Avocato, but also after with Gary asks Avocato to prove that he deserves Little Cato’s worth and forgiveness much as Gary needs to prove Ash’s forgiveness. Gary and Avocato did patch things up at the end but the topic of the death of Little Cato’s parents and Avocato committing that act doesn’t get brought up again until the penultimate episode of the season with Ash overhearing them, pretty much settles the whole “straw that broke the camel’s back” and told Little Cato the truth.

But for now, from this episode’s standpoint, that’s all that Gary and Avocato all had to do. Proving their recipient’s worth and forgiveness with the episode wrapping up with Ash, along with Mooncake, returning to the cock pit of the ship with Little Cato who appears to be waiting for them to return. Telling him about the light show that Ash saw with Evra before heading off and Gary entering the room. Thus, wrapping up the episode with Ash and Gary having a talk which leads to them having a conversation about Fox.

This was a spectacular episode from the season and I know that some fans are going to give me the stink eye for not placing the episode that high on the list despite that stating the obvious when talking about the episode, but let’s not forget that there are more episodes coming in from different series. But besides all of that, this was an amazing episode just as the crew is at their lowest point after losing one of their own and ready to lose another one if the friction between Ash and the others, with the exception of Little Cato, following what happened in the previous episode.

But I do enjoy this episode. I really do. I mean, the emotional fight between Gary and Avocato after spilling the beans about the atrocity that Avocato caused on the King and Queen of Ventrexia. The duo venting to each other while being all bruised and bloodied from their fight. Ash has her venting moments when meeting Evra and forming a friendship in a snap in the subplot. This was a phenomenal episode and also an emotional one with the topic of forgiveness being the name of the game for the episode, especially after killing off one of the main members of the crew...courtesy of Invictus being a douche and loves to fuck around with Ash and her emotions and psyche. Again, the fight between Gary and Avocato, the whole vent through fists, was solely the highlight of the episode, and the cast and crew really gave it their all and what a way to do it with this episode and on this holiday season with the number 8 spot fallen on Christmas Eve, it’s all about forgiveness and proving your worth to earn that forgiveness from the person that you did wrong.

But that’ll do it for the number 8 spot in the Top 12 Countdown of 2021. Do you think that this episode should be higher, lower, or just stay put on your list for the year?
