Number 5 of the Top 12 Countdown of 2021 - Final Space: "All The Moments Lost"

And so, here we are people! Here we freaking fracking are. The final five spots in the countdown and the final five days of the year. And boy, how time flies so fast. As what everyone said when talking about whatever topic is being thrown onto our faces. It’s time to fill up the remaining five sports to close out the year and we’ll see which episode and series will take home the bronze, silver, and gold medals for this year. And we begin the final five spots with...well, number five of the year and that goes to...wouldn’t you guess it? Final Space with “All The Moments Lost”.

Since we don’t have that much time left for 2021, I might as well give Final Space a proper sendoff, so I might as well talk about this very episode. Did you know that this episode was one of the contenders that would’ve been nominated for this year’s Emmys? Yeah, let that sink in. Let that feeling sink in. Yeah, we might as well let the whole Cato family drama a break in this countdown and instead give the focus to someone who was also overdue to be put under the spotlight with this episode at the number five spot of the countdown. That being Quinn Ergon.

And of course, it’s at where we’re left off from the previous episode, “One of Us”, in which the team makes their escape from Invictus and the Lord Commander after Gary, Quinn, Mooncake, KVN, and Sheryl free everyone from being chained up...well, everyone but Fox, who became possessed by Invictus. Funny because if you look back to that episode when seeing the background characters who were also chained up that once Invictus, the blast from Invictus, reached them, we thought that you would be one and done. Like that’s it, light’s out, end of story. Yeah, that did not happen with Fox. But anyway, back to Quinn.

We get her backstory as she and the rest of the crew struggle to get out of dodge and away from a black hole and from Invictus as we transported to where it all began with Quinn underwater and got back up on a boat with her sister Avery. And that’s pretty much what the entirety of the episode with Quinn as she and the others try to escape from the force of the black hole at each passing time like it’s some sort of traumatic event. Like it almost feels like something that went out of control and thinking that it’s not even your fault and ends up blaming ourselves for something that fate has pulled out from its ass. So it would make some sense where you have Quinn believing that it’s her fault for Avery’s actions from the small sibling rivalry in the open waters in the middle of a storm to the moment where she died on the battlefield. A weight that Quinn had to carry on her back to this very day, so I guess the addition of the crew escaping the black hole and everyone not getting used to the gravity that exceeded everyone’s weight was a nifty idea for a plot device to make sure Quinn’s backstory being added into the episode serves well. That and also her Final Space poisoning spread rapidly like wildfire all across her body.

Of course, you have the hospital scene with Quinn being relieved that Avery didn’t drown but then you have their mom coming in and taking Quinn to a room filled with dead bodies. A lot of dead bodies to fill up a single room. No body bags. No sheets covering their corpse. I get that her mom is pretty much an authoritative, imposing figure and shows Quinn that she’s going to experience it. She’s going to experience loss once she enters the military. I would say “mother of the year” for showing someone that young to go through a room filled with dead bodies and that’s the type of place you don’t want to show your child at that age, but it does serve for Quinn to gain some experience once she joins the Infinity Guard. Have to make some tough decisions, decisions that would result in getting the people you know to die. Pretty much sums up to suck it up, you’re going to deal with what you’re seeing later in your life. And she did...

When we get to the last portion of the flashback with Quinn and Avery on the battlefield with Avery charging towards the enemy camp with Quinn watching her final moments in action. And a cross between the flashback and present-day with the vision of her late sister as the ship gets closer and closer to the black hole and the infection from the poison getting worse and worse by the moment as each minute passes by. Giving the episode its heartbreak to the viewer for what Quinn was going through throughout the episode. I don’t know if you want to call it survivor’s guilt as the plausible cause for what Quinn is going through because it does tie in with PTSD and you might as well say that Quinn envisioning herself in the backstory, blaming herself for something that isn’t even her fault for Avery’s actions that ended up getting her killed. Could Quinn have done something that should’ve prevented Avery from being killed off? Maybe. Maybe not. I mean Quinn would save Avery out in the open battlefield but would result in Avery giving Quinn the cold shoulder. Say if what Quinn has gone through is whether survivor’s guilt or possibly the poison doing its work, it does take a total effect on Quinn both mentally and also physically at the end of the episode as she becomes succumb to the poison.

Of course, not gonna pretend that the subplot that tied it with the main story of the episode with Avocato, Little Cato, Mooncake, KVN, and Biskit making their way to the engine room to fix the engine that powers the lightfold, and there are some chuckles from here to there, mostly with Avocato having his eye popped out from his socket to KVN commenting about Avocato not skipping leg day. Not to mention giving Bisket some leverage over his new role as I guess the shipwright for the crew other than noticing that Gary’s amputated robotic arm serves more than just a hand and just gave those four the basics on repairing the ship while having no effect whatsoever with the gravity of the black hole nearly pinning them down to the ground.

Of course, we can’t end the number five spot of the countdown without talking about Ash in this episode. Being sidelined for the rest of the episode after getting her fingers broken by the Lord Commander while struggling to accept that her powers came from Invictus. That and also upset over leaving Fox behind from the end of the previous episode, but more of struggling to accept the fact that the titan that possessed her brother was the one who gave her powers that were unlocked after watching her sister being sacrificed to a giant serpent. So it took her the entire episode, all the way to the end of the episode, for Gary to step in and help Quinn out from falling to the depths of space and also presumably sucked into the black hole but also coming to a realization and accept the truth of where she got her powers from as she saved Quinn from falling but it would result in Ash breaking away from the crew as the ship heads out and for Ash to go toe-to-toe with Invictus come the next episode. And as I said from the number 8 spot of the countdown, much like with Little Cato, Ash may need some therapy, and even though it sucks that we can’t a proper conclusion to the show, she might need it. Renew the damn show, fuckers!

But other than that, this was a pretty impressive episode. The use of the black hole and the crew’s attempts to escape from the gravitational pull to trigger Quinn to take a stroll down memory lane and go through what may or may not be survivor’s guilt and thinking that it’s her fault for Avery’s actions leading up to her death. Honestly, it was an interesting episode to explore Quinn’s past and all it took to take a dive to that was the black hole as the team squad try to make their escape from Invictus’ grasp. That and also the poison spreading across the body all the way to the end where she has no control and setting things up for the next episode where they cured her, rather maintaining her poison by turning her into a present version of Nightfall. You might as well say that the use of the black hole was a tad unusual for us to see Quinn’s backstory in action, but I thought it was handled well and serves each passing moment as Quinn going through a traumatic episode.

That and also the subplot with Avocato, Little Cato, KVN, Mooncake, and Biskit fixing the engine while trying to fight against the gravitational pull and Ash trying to refuse to accept the fact of where her powers come from while dealing with her broken fingers to coincide with the main plot with the crew’s attempted escape from being pulled into the black hole. I think that’s more than enough to say about the episode and honestly, it’s a shame that the show had to abruptly end after having a massive cliffhanger to end the season with Invictus being free from its prison and the crew finally out of Final Space, only for them to clean up a giant mess. It’s an underrated show to everyone’s radar and it did have a slow start in the first few episodes, especially in the show’s first season, but it’s a pretty amazing show the more you continue watching after that slow start. And like I said from the article when talking about the show’s cancelation back in September, the cast and crew of the show worked their asses off from hell and back and knew what they’re doing to entertain the masses. To a passionate fanbase no less. A passionate fanbase that won you guys a title from the 2019 voting tournament during the show’s sophomore year on the air. And if the show would get renewed, I don’t know if it’s going to continue to be on Adult Swim and squeezing themselves in the lineup with the likes of Tuca and Bertie, Rick and Morty, I guess Teenage Euthanisa and Smile Friends I think that’s what the title of the new animated program would be called. Either there or maybe streaming like HBO Max for example to at least give the show some hope. It’s a damn shame that the show had to end like that and as I said back in September, whether the show will get a second chance or not, it’s sad to see a show that has a lot of potential left in its tank to go out like that. And yeah...sucks that I’ll be talking about. I mean, I could but still kinda wish if can get some new content but...this is pretty much the biggest WTF moment for the year the moment we all knew that something was up once Season 3 ended. So that’s that on what I have to say on number 5 of the countdown and also Final Space in general.
