Number 6 of the Top 12 Countdown of 2021 - The Owl House: "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door"

Ladies and gentlemen...here we are. The final week of 2021. Only six spots left in the countdown, though once this is released, then we’ll be down to the final five. Might as well cherish it as we are now at the number six spot in the Top 12 Countdown of 2021. It’s unbelievable that I’m not dead yet from making seven, about to go eight, posts in a span of a week or two for this month. And there’s more on the way as we prepare to enter 2022, so coming in at number 6, if you haven’t already read the title already, we’re back with the reigning Battle of the Week champions in The Owl House with “Knock, Knock, Knockin’ on Hooty’s Door”.

I could feel the pitchforks and torches already lining up outside of my doorstep over how I rank the episodes and this might be the prime example. Like I said from yesterday with Amphibia, there are other episodes from different series that might have taken the spots, you’re going to have to wait. I guess that’s pretty much me being overexaggerating for what to expect for this spot in the countdown. But besides all of that, as I said from “Eda’s Requiem” back a few spots ago, the first half of the second season has been banger after banger. Especially with this episode just coming after the release of the previous episode, that being, you guessed it, “Eda’s Requiem”. Does it one-up any of the past episodes? Spoiler alert, much like with the previous episodes, it did. And despite that it’s an anthology episode with Hooty taking center stage to help King, Eda, and Luz out in that order, this was a pretty good episode and you have to give Hooty some credit where credit is due for him.

Mostly because when it comes to Hooty throughout the show, in the first season, he’s been pretty much the butt of the show where...I don’t wanna say he’s the black sheep of the Owl House, but more of him being there as the comic relief. But once we get to “Agony of a Witch”, he just took down an entire squadron. An entire freaking squadron led by Lillith. Making them look like punk bitches. And then we get to the second season, the only highlight we got from him was his newly-found friendship with Lilith when taking refuge for the first four episodes before moving out and moving back to her mom’s place. So it makes sense that the entirety of the episode happens to be Hooty writing a letter to Lilith about what’s happening and the events from this episode written down rather typed it from the typewriter on paper. I might as well address the elephant of the room since this is going to be out of order anyway on who’s turn to be in the spotlight.

We get to Luz’s first and this was the episode that made it official. Lumity became canon in this episode and you can thank Hooty for everything that he has pulled...even if it means kidnapping Amity and having her covered in what appeared to be fur and the tunnel of love that I still want to know how in the hell Hooty even have the time to build one underneath the Owl House? But even if the question might not be answered because reasons, Luz has her problems, two to be exact because, on one hand, you have her continuing her quest on trying to get back home to the human realm and trying to know about the portal from Philip Wittebane’s journal. And on the other hand, you have Luz wanting to confess her feelings and ask Amity out for a date. The second item on the list is enough for Hooty to step in and help his friend out, much to Luz’s sudden embarrassment with her past and how she thinks it’s cheesy. Hence, her reaction to the tunnel of love.

But regardless, after all of that, not to mention Hooty having a breakdown from this, thinking that he messed things up from Luz’s problems, as well as King’s and Eda’s, Luz and Amity, as of July 31, 2021, at 10:29 am (or midnight if y’all saw it on the Disney Now app), are a couple. And if y’all thought that the whole development on how we got here, not to mention Amity’s sudden character progression was rushed because it was just in a span of a season and it went by that quick. Hate to break it to y’all...I don’t think it’s rushed. Sure, it just happened in a snap within a span of a single season, but the development between these two gals and how Amity went from being Little Miss Perfect to someone who would make sure Luz doesn’t get into something that might herself killed. And you could thank a YouTuber named Curmudgeon Media for stating the facts. But besides all of that, Lumity isn’t rushed. And them being official is pretty much the highlight from the episode courtesy of...well, everyone. But there are more moments from the episode.

King was the first to be under the spotlight in the episode with him struggling to know about his past and also what kind of demon that he is. This leads to Hooty to take him to class about his biology, thinking that it pretty much comes down to demon puberty and having Tiny Nose to help out to find out what kind of a demon King is despite the doubts and questions coming from him regarding his past, his lineage, what his dad looks like or if he’s even alive, enough for him to get into frustration and unlocked a special power with his screams, causing a shockwave enough for some items to break surrounding the area. Upsets Hooty in thinking that he fucked up, but King thinks that Hooty did nothing wrong but is unable to get his attention. But besides all that, King got a powerup in unlocking his screams.

Though the highlight for me with the episode other than Lumity, Eda. The girl has it rough growing up ever since she was cursed with the owl beast living inside her thanks to Lilith putting that curse onto her, thinking that Eda would have a one-way ticket to joining the coven, and ultimately ruined her life. We get the full aspect to her past courtesy of Hooty drugging Eda with sleeping nettles, which is a plant that put people to sleep with the effect of heightening the dreams of that person who is sleeping, mixed into the cookies. Causing her to go into memory lane. Starting off with her at her parent’s home, coming downstairs and sees both Gwendeloyn and a young Lilith at the dinner table and waiting for their father to arrive. Introducing us to Eda’s dad, who gets attacked by her curse and caused some damage to his face, clawing his eye out. The addition of the blood in his face...yeah. But why stop there?

We flash forward to Eda in her young adult life with her and Raine over at the hill, the same setting as the previous episode in their flashback, and apparently, it’s not looking good for the two as Raine tells Eda that things aren’t working out between the two. Revealing that used to date and also noticed that Eda’s been pushing away everyone. Not knowing that Eda has been cursed and unable to tell anyone about it to the point where she’s pretty much proved Raine’s point of her pushing everyone away. Being distant from her family and now her friends. As I said, Eda has it rough with her curse in tow that she pretty much had nothing but a burden living insider her.

Hell, it’s to the point where once she transformed into the being itself, she gets captured by a mysterious hooded figure, which I feel like we haven’t gotten an answer to. I would say that I hope with the second half of the season coming presumably next year, we would at least get a hint on who that being is. But then again, I feel like we might not get it and probably not going to be touched upon as Eda flies away from that hooded figure, only for her wings to burn off and crash land into the ground.

And I gotta hand the animators a lot of credit for working their butts off with this scene of both Eda and a now shrunken down owl beast being tied with a red string of fate on their ankles. The use of black and white with the potion bottle being the only item left colored, only for the entire scene to be colored once Eda and the owl beast create a compromise that leads to her obtaining a form that is a cross between herself and the owl beast. This was a stunning and beautiful shot right there and I did get a bit of a chuckle when Eda checked herself out after being unable to calm Hooty down after thinking that he messed things up again. You could say that Luz and Amity became a couple or King obtained his potential with his sonic scream, Eda’s backstory is what I enjoyed out of the three. The animation, emotions, visuals, suspense, it’s all there mixed into one with this particular scene and again, you have to give Hooty some credit on what’s he doing in helping not just Eda, but also King and Luz because, without him, we would not have Lumity, we would not have King getting his powers, and we would not have Eda containing her curse. So after all that was done with everyone finally getting the monkey out of their backs and finally getting his self-esteem back up, just as Hooty was dropping off the envelope to Lilith over at the drop-off box...

You have that mysterious demon from the last episode coming across with Hooty and wants him to deliver a letter addressed to King...before accidentally eating it because a bug was over the item in question. A bit frustrating coming from Hooty for eating the letter by accident, but it does leave more questions than answered to close out the episode. What’s written in the letter? Who wrote the letter? Is that even King’s dad or someone that his dad knows. Man, the second half of Season 2 needs to arrive ASAP so we can get some answers. The more the mystery gets brought up, the more we wanted to be answered. Though hopefully not in a rushed way possible, knowing that we’re only 14 episodes left in the show, or six if you cut the specials in half...yeah, this might need to be brought up soon in a non-rushed away possible. Might as well treat the second half of the season as one long anime arc.

Other than that, this was a pretty impressive episode and one that I’d enjoyed coming from a long line of amazing episodes from the first half of the season. And even though this is an anthology episode with Hooty helping King, Eda, and Luz in that order, this episode did not disappoint. Whether your highlight is either King getting his powers, Eda obtaining her new form after compromising with the owl beast, or Luz and Amity becoming an official couple, or maybe the ending with a mysterious figure handing Hooty the letter for King, it’s a pretty amazing episode and I would put it way up on high on the list...if it weren’t for a certain episode that went way up on the list, it a spoiler to put it out there, but other than that, this was a fantastic episode out of the many amazing episodes from this first half of the season and I think this might be a good fit for the number 6 spot in the countdown for 2021.

But that’ll do it for this exact spot in the Top 12 Countdown of 2021. Do you think that this episode should be higher, lower, or just stay put on your list for the year? Put it in the comments below. We’re now down to the final five. Five spots left in the countdown. Which episode and series will it be? You’ll have to wait and find out as the countdown continues.
