Fandom Update: TBS/Adult Swim Animated Program Final Space Cancelled After Three Seasons

It’s something that you don’t want to wake up to if you’re a Final Space fan on a Friday morning to find out that the show will not be getting renewed and that the show has to end on a cliffhanger after a season that is pretty much their magnum opus. Oh wait, that happened. So technically, you’re not the only one who just find out about the news that was bound to happen if things would have gone for the worst. And it did once you checked over on social media earlier today.

Yes Final Space fans, this isn’t a nightmare that you just stumbled after consuming 36-ounces of chili following the Cowboys/Buccaneers barnburner of a game. It actually happened. Final Space, months after wrapping up its third season that was a complete roller coaster which ended with, spoiler alert for anyone not caught up, the big bad finally coming out of its cocoon and ready to fuck shit up, looks like we’ll never find out what’s about to come next because of September 10, on a video over on YouTube and Instagram, every fan’s worst expectations regarding the show’s fate has become a reality as creator Olan Rogers coming out and say that Season 3, the season that was just finished back in June, was the final season of the show and that there will be no more new content past beyond that regarding the series. A sad notion to find out upon waking up and no fan wants to hear that a show that has a very slow start and ending up exceeding expectations as the series progresses to where we are now following its second and third seasons and a very passionate fanbase to only have the plug pulled by the networks.

Apparently, shows being fucked around by the networks isn’t new. Some of y’all who watched the show knows that some of your favorites, either before or during the run, have some outside of the series that’s been fucked over, either due to ratings plunging, not making any money (that one might be going towards the network for not pushing any merchandise), or probably not given any ad time to promote over well...other shows. Oh yeah, and there’s also the whole merger thing with WarnerMedia and Discovery...which almost explains why OK KO had a rough time during its two-year run on the air. But with Final Space, that is in question over how we ended up in this mess. You could say that the ratings might be the cause because I think the ratings for the show for each new episode may have been dropped. Maybe due to the networks playing hot potato regarding the show’s fate and how it ended up from airing the first season on TBS, meant to be a TBS original, to Adult Swim for the next two seasons and messing around with the time slots from a Monday in 2019 to a Saturday (and two Sundays for the final two episodes of the third season) in 2021. Other fingers pointing towards the recent merger between Warner and Discovery, which apparently lead to the show’s cancellation. It almost feels like that might also lead to Infinity Train’s cancellation earlier this year as well. All on the merger, and of course, there’s also the pandemic, but yeah. It’s all on the merger.

Of course, knowing the internet and the entertainment world, there are some assholes out there where they’re not going to put the blame on the poor ratings and not convincing people to give the show a try and such and possibly going to pit blame onto other shows because of treatment and shit. When Star vs the Forces of Evil ended back in 2019 following what most fans said that the finale was sorta rushed with its fourth season kinda bull-rushed and was put on a death slot known as Sunday morning with some wanting either a fifth season (which is pretty much going over the four-season for from Disney programming) or at least a movie much a grin to Kim Possible back in the mid-2000s. To the point where some assholes decided to pit some blame onto a little show, maybe you heard of it, called Amphibia. That ain’t it. That’s not the cause and I don’t wanna hear it.

The same goes for the others pitting one show because the other didn’t get the share of the bread. And it’s somewhat of a long list to pick out regarding this little situation when a show that you’re heavily invested in decided to have the plug pulled. Some blame Amphibia over Star ending. Some blaming Housebroken over Bless the Harts being canceled. Some blaming The Prince over Infinity Train being canceled (though that might be heading towards the merger for the show’s fate). Hell, some blame Big Mouth over Tuca and Birdie’s cancellation, which jokes on you, I don’t even watch Big Mouth because I don’t have a Netflix account and that doesn’t get my interest. At least Tuca and Birdie were given a second life and got a third season greenlit, so there’s a plus on that. I don’t wanna hear any shit from anyone ready to go to the scapegoat route and about to pit blame onto...let’s say Rick and Morty because Adult Swim has given the show more ad time. Yeah...that ain’t it, chief. That ain’t fucking it. I don’t want to hear any scapegoating bullshit coming from the tiny slice of the pie of the population of any fandom and pitting blame onto other shows because they got more than the others.

At least there’s one positive side of things over the bad over the show having its fate sealed is that international viewers get to see the show one final time when Season 3 decided to drop on September 16. So whether if streaming is going to save the show or not; and hopefully gets a second chance by either the network or put it on streaming services like HBO Max or not, it’s sad to see the show go and of course, it stings that it has to end just as things were really about to go HAM regarding what’s happening after the events of the Season 3 finale and not be unable to see what’s about to come next. But other than that, the cast and crew on the show did one hell of a job working on the show for the past three years being on the air. They gave it their all to create a show that has a passionate fanbase from start to finish. Having an official Discord where sometimes Olan or Coty Galloway drop on by to talk with the fans. Had a Facebook Live event on playing cards with Gary back during its heyday. Hell, they once hosted a live vigil to Avocato when he first died (not knowing that he then gets revived in the next season, whoops, I hope that’s not a spoiler). I mean fuck, the fandom once a championship in 2019 during its sophomore year on the air with Gary Goodspeed, as the candidate representing the fandom, becoming the highest-scoring candidate and also the oldest to be elected at 32. But yeah, not the news that Final Space fans don’t want to hear but here we are. Final Space, canceled after three seasons and ending it with a cliffhanger.

Regardless of whether it may or may not get a second chance in life, it’s sad to see a show go that has a lot of potentials. Things were really getting interesting at the end of the season and now, we won’t find out what happens next because we ain’t getting any more stuff. So a big thanks to Olan Rogers for creating a very amazing show with a very passionate fanbase. Sucks that the network decided to mess around with the series but hopefully we wait for whatever is next in your life.

PayPal, Patreon, Ko-fi pages are the way to go to help the page out as another burger season is right around the corner. Already got two episode titles out for the upcoming season, so might as well get ready once the week of the 26th arrives. And until then, stay safe, wash your hands, wear a mask, get vaccinated, and I’ll see y’all later.
