Well if there’s one thing to describe the first two, maybe three weeks into the new year that is the year 2020...total and complete cluster shambles. That pretty much sums up January of this year in a nutshell and the month isn’t even freaking over with. It’s like one you, you think of yourself, “It’s a new decade, a new year, and think it’s time to get things going my way and have the time of life” to the next day which is, “Holy fuck, we might be going to war with Iran. Not to mention that most of Australia is engulfed in flames, earthquakes happening in Puerto Rico, royal family drama, and something about a movie about cats being a massive catastrophe for all human kind and some probably use as a scapegoat to not point their anger towards Rise of Skywalker. At least there some good news for the new year being...
The Patriots out of the playoffs courtesy of the Tennessee Titans, which is glorious for everyone to see and hear who don’t want to suffer another year of a random Bostonian, no offense to the city of Boston, of them saying the usual shit. But enough all of that and let’s hope that the year of 2020 don’t end up like 2016 or 2017 all over again, the series have returned and it’s of course, it’s reviewing time.
In this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, Louise takes matters into her own hands against a very upset store keep kicked Gene out for mishandling musical equipment without spending a single coin as Teddy tries to keep his secret from Bob of working for the enemy, enemy being Jimmy Pesto, in my spoilerific review of the Eleventh Episode of Season 10, titled “Drumforgiven”.
First episode of the new year for Bob’s Burgers and this should be a really big year for the series in general. From the show ready to hit the 200 mark to of course, the long-awaited movie to come out later this summer, it’s a really important year for not the show itself, but for the fans as well for how much the show has improved and how far it has come since it’s humble beginnings back in 2011. Pretty much subvert expectations from being one of the shows that pretty much gonna be a one-off show that won’t get another season to now a possibly an underrated show but still gained a massive following whether here in the states or some other countries around the world. And nothing said kicking off the biggest year for the series in this week’s episode and I gotta say...was an okay one. I don’t hate it, but it felt kind of a bit fast in my taste when it comes to the pacing of the episode. Though the idea of the little sibling protecting the big sibling like we see here with Louise trying to defend Gene after getting his feelings hurt by being banned from the store by the owner of the place, but the revenge part almost seems to predictable, mostly when it comes to the outcome of, which make things worse for everyone, especially Gene, who told Louise to not intervene whenever he deals with a problem. Somebody should’ve told her that after “All That Gene” after Linda intervened and turned it into a her problem.
Oh yeah, and there was a subplot where Teddy tries to hide from Bob that he’s working for Jimmy Pesto because Teddy is Bob’s best customer and possibly best friend and Jimmy Pesto is his rival and it’s pretty much straightforward but also seems a bit out of line when it comes to how the situation is being handled, mostly with both Teddy and Bob when it comes to the idea of working for the enemy. But it was...decent? Decent subplot of the episode despite some flaws but it was somewhat decent in my mind. And with that, let’s get to the review of the episode.
Starting off with the main plot with the Belcher kids walking on down on the sidewalk after school on their way home with Gene telling both Louise and Tina about the whole cafeteria fiasco where the lunch lady somehow got him less tater tots than the usual, which might as well be the first big scandal of the new year of not having more than taters than tots. You think that you somehow ordered 8 pieces of tater tots? Fuck you, you got seven. One less than you ordered. Someone should be fired for that. Gene decided to let his troubles to go away by dropping on by to the local Hi-Fi shop to mess around with the instruments, mostly on that one instrument that he’s been eying on for days, if not, weeks over at the shop. However both Tina and Louise are not too keen when it comes to the idea of Gene visiting the place one too many times, mostly because of the store owner having to endure his presence and him saying “You again” at him like Gene thinks it’s nothing more than a friendly gesture and trying out the drum machine and not paying for it. That’s like if you go to the mall food court and try out the samples from each of the restaurants that are present and try each one out but have no money nor the time to get the full experience and keep on hopping by time after time. That pretty much sums up Gene and his visit to that store that he and the Belcher sisters are now entering with of course, the store owner, named Dino, saying “You again.”
Moments passed as Gene try out the drum machine that he been eyeing on and try it out and comes up with different noises from the object to create some jams of his own. Of course, that’s where Dino decided to say enough is enough and stops Gene from continuing on. Telling him that if he were to continue messing around with the drum machine, then it will be all worn out and probably drain the batteries and whatnot. Talk about taking care of the merchandise. Not to mention that he got sticky fingers all over the object from god knows what kind of stuff Gene was eating before coming into the store. In which Gene tries to reason with the guy and saying that he was just warming up for whoever buys the thing would get the Gene touch, which is filled with music magic and whatever Gene eats, probably something with caramel, so it better come with 10 packs of Lysol disinfectant wipes as an added bonus. Dino call out Gene’s talents, in which come Louise and Tina to come into his defense but enough as he now kicks Gene out from the place until he has both money in his hands and a clean set of fingers, thus hurting hurt his feelings as he head out the door.
Tina heads out as she tries to cheer Gene up but as for Louise after witnessing all of this, ain’t gonna let that happen. He made Gene upset, and that cause Louise to go all mama bear on the guy and telling that if he sees John Wick, which he did, and thus entering the warning that Louise gives to Dino, comparing Louise to John Wick, Dino as one of the guys who did fucked up shit to the puppy, and Gene of course...the puppy. And in John Wick...you don’t mess with the man’s puppy. And with that analogy, you don’t mess with Gene when it comes to Louise because next to Rudy, that’s somebody you don’t want to mess around with when Louise is around. And that’s her sibling you’re talking about, Gene, not Rudy, and like they say, you don’t mess with the Belcher family. And what Dino did to Gene to cause Louise to now go HAM on him, like someone once said, he’s gonna meet with fire and fury.
Onto the next day at school over at the cafeteria with Gene still upset over him getting kicked out at the local Hi-Fi store, Tina tries to cheer her young sibling up at the best of her ability as Louise now plans to take immediate action at Dino for what happened yesterday. But Gene don’t want Louise to do something stupid by intervening with his problems and want to deal with this all by himself by doing the ol’ Gene charm as he now head off to his next class. But Louise doesn’t even listen to word he said and asks the guys behind the siblings in Jimmy Jr, Zeke, Andy, and Ollie and recruit them to take Dino down for what happened to Gene...even though Gene said to not intervene. Even Tina thinks that’s a bad idea and don’t want her to intervene with this whole mess. Otherwise, it would make matters even worse. Yeah...someone should’ve told the US about that about Iran weeks ago, oh wait...we did that because our president got impeached and if your numbers are in the shitter, fuck shit up. And this isn’t new, other leaders in the past around the world did that. Remember the football wars? Yeah...that was a thing in the 70s between Honduras and El Salvador. Go watch OverSimplified over at YouTube, you’ll thank me later.
The kids minus Gene head on down to the Hi-Fi store to get back at Dino with Tina now worried and tells Louise that it’s not too late to back down and let Gene to deal with this all by his own but Louise won’t listen and Operation: John Wick is a go with her sending Zeke to the store. And thus upon arriving, Zeke asks Dino to try out an electric guitar on the shelf and does what Gene would do and play around without buying it. And the same goes for Jimmy Jr later on with him trying out the keyboard like he’s Elton John. And then we get to the Pesto Twins with Andy with another guitar and Ollie with bongos attached onto him and causing him to not straight up having it. I mean look at it...
That’s like you’re creating a band and you have to find some members to fill in the spot from bassist to drummer, or in Ollie’s case, a bongo user, and the people you found is of course...coming from an ad you post on Craigslist. Ah Craigslist, you’re the reason why crime has taken some roids and fuck everyone up. Louise and Tina comes into the picture and be like Asthon Kutcher in Punk’d if you remember that show and tells Dino that if he’s annoyed by all of the noised and scenes created with Zeke, Jimmy Jr, and the Pesto Twins trying out the instruments without paying for it like with Gene with the drumming machine. Of course, no response coming from Dino due to the high capacity of the noise. Oh if you think that the whole noise thing is bad enough for the kids...well...
Enter Gene as he is prepared to head onto down to the store where he got kicked out from, where the problem began, with him ready to convince Dino to let him in once again. And despite that he said to him to come back with a clean pair of hands and some cash in his pockets, he only got one of two things checked off on that list. That being the clean hands part and not the cash to buy the thing. At least he have decency all planned out rather than Louise going behind his back and plan on getting back on the guy or in this case when trying to get back into the place...
But it looks like Gene’s bad day yesterday has now become into Gene’s bad week when noticing Zeke, Jimmy Jr, and the Pesto Twins fooling around with Louise and Tina by the doorstep. Just as Gene was about to ready to reason with the guy, Dino decided to bring out the ban hammer and raise the visitation age where people under the age of 12 cannot enter the place...though bad for Gene but looks like Zeke could drop on by since he is only 13. Meaning that Dino raise the age up to people under the age of 14 not allowed to enter. So Gene, because of the age raise...yeah, that’s pretty much a ban from entering back. And you can really thank Louise from allowing revenge to upset him even more. Good job there Louise, really nailed it there when it comes to protecting Gene.
Onto the dinner table later at night with Linda telling Gene on he’s in a sour mood lately with Gene telling her mother that he can’t go back to his favorite store anymore thanks in par with Louise intervening with his problems when taking on Dino. Even though Louise was only doing this because he hurt his feelings earlier in the episode that led to him getting kicked out. Even though Gene said to Louise to not, and quote to NOT intervene with a Gene crisis. That’s pretty much rule number 76-pie emoji when it comes to that. Apparently, this is pretty much like with Linda two episodes ago in “All That Gene” when Gene didn’t get the part for the local theater and Linda go behind his back and give him the role. Keep it short, she intervened and got the silent treatment afterwards. What did Louise in this episode with the Hi-Fi situation? She intervened and now will be given the silent treatment from her older brother. And you think that she would like stand down following the mess that she made and just let Gene handle his own business? Sadly, that’s not the case and Louise decided to go after the guy once again...even though Gene said that it would problems even more worse. Bad enough that he got an age ban, the last thing from the store is a lifetime ban.
And onto the next day at school with Louise still wanting to get back at Dino for kicking Gene out but Gene don’t want her to intervene and should stay out of it and let him tackle it by himself and still gives her the silent treatment for what happened. And you think that this would get Louise to stand down and let her brother do all the work and patch things up? Well Gene said to Louise to not intervene. What did she do? She intervened and got the visitation age raised up. Been told to not intervene again. And what is she going to do next? That’s right.
Intervene once again. Even though Gene said to not create even more damage. He even tried to tell Tina to tell Louise to not step in. Get caught in the crosshairs once again. Enlisting Zeke, Jimmy Jr, and the Pesto Twins once again to get back at Dino until he caves. Is this what it comes to now when it comes to deal with problems, being personally and foreign-ly? Escalate even more until one side caves even though it would even more problems enough for the balloon to pop when filling with extra amounts of air? This is what it comes to now? This is what problem solving is going to be for 2020? Just a game of chicken and see whether or not your opponent caves. This is what Louise is going to do when getting Dino for hurting Gene’s feelings...intervene and mess around until he gives up even though that would give a Gene a lifetime ban if she were to continue and continue she will. But this time around, may have gotten some help from Zeke when founding out the first time around that Dino is not a big fan of glitter. And thus gave Louise an idea via thought bubble and stick figures with her planting a balloon full of glitter and put it in a box with a nail or thumbtack attached to pop up it, somewhat turned it into a ticking time bomb, and once Dino opens the box with the now popped balloon with glitter, cue the glitter bomb to take its course. Seems more like a high school senior prank rather than using it as a revenge plot. But regardless, that will be the idea that Louise will use to get back at Dino for hurting Gene and kicked him out, despite the consequences that it will hold for everyone, especially Gene himself.
Once after school arrive across the street from the shop, the plan kicks off with Louise demanding Jimmy Jr to create a diversion to get the box inside onto the counter. With a phone out on his hand, he calls Dino by talking about an amp as he turns away and not noticing Louise entering the store with the box in her hands and make a quick run in and out of the store and await for Dino to come back to the counter, notice the package, and boom...glitter bomb with him covered in the substance. Just as Louise has planned out...that was until she noticed Gene ready to walk on by and about to enter back to the Hi-Fi store and thus for Louise to head on to the store in a massive hurry, of course, looking both ways to make sure there isn’t cars coming into the picture, and head on down to the store.
Finally caught up with him, now out of breath, with Dino coming in and tells the two to stay out since the age of visit been raised thanks to Louise, tried to get him out there even though she went behind Gene’s back and intervene once again by pretending to play a game and get him out before Dino opens the box to have a full on glitter shower. But before doing that, Gene comes up to Dino to settle some unfinished business that he want to tackle it all by himself without interference from Louise and telling him that he has a right in using that drum machine and wanting to play around and instead of buying, since again, no money on his pocket, decided to challenge the guy to a one-on-one, mano e mano beat off. As in who can make the most noise in the drum machine and it looks like the stakes are high when it comes to who will come up on top. If Gene wins, he comes back to the store and play with it every day after school. But if Dino wins, Gene gets the boot and be out of his hair for good. And with that, the challenge begins on the fate of Gene’s time on the Hi-Fi store and we begin...
With Gene since he’s up first with him mashing each of the buttons as what he did during his previous various visits at the store and of course, his beats pretty much gotten some responses from Zeke to Jimmy Jr dancing along to the beat as the button mashing continues. But of course, before the contest began, it pretty much shows that Dino have some experience when it comes to the music world since he’s in a small band that he’s a member of. So it might as well be experience from Dino vs youth and somewhat of an experience from Gene. So that was Gene’s turn and now onto Dino that somehow we got skipped over due to the inference known as the subplot with the whole Teddy fiasco...
Dino has now wrapped up his turn with the machine and it looks like Gene has pretty much lost the battle against him despite all the effort that he has put up against the guy for him to stay in and live to see another day over at the shop but after fallen short against Dino, it looks like Gene’s time over at the music store comes to a disappointing end for the eleven year old child. But at least he did it and did by himself as what he said because he told Louise that he doesn’t need any help from anyone and telling her that with her intervening whenever there’s a Gene problem, it almost feels like he can’t do it by himself. Like he’s defenseless and be that type of person where whenever there’s a problem and he want to do it by himself, someone has to step in and help out, even though he doesn’t need any of it. It almost feels like they’re painting Gene as the weakest member of the family and have Louise to handle his problems despite not having someone to intervene. Mostly going behind his back. Much like with Linda two episodes ago with the theater. Might as well tell everyone to not get involved with anything Gene related whether if it’s changing the ingredients back for your favorite candy or getting your best friend back or trying to break up with the most annoying person in your class that you have no interest. Gene is pretty much a country that doesn’t need its allies for help whenever there’s trouble, financially or domestically...unless there’s a special material and that’s where we come in and fuck shit up.
Besides all that, Louise felt bad over all of this and think of herself that she wished she shouldn’t intervened in the first place. Wow, you think?! But yeah, Gene’s time over at the Hi-Fi store comes to a close as he say his final goodbye to Dino and the drum machine and ready to head out in shame, that was until Dino decided to have a change of mind when noticed Gene’s skills during the challenge and decided to drop the “ban” on him and invites him back to the place and use the machine, but only on Mondays and on the first week of the month. Abusing it until someone buys it and not notice the batteries being somewhat drained and that of course, Gene accepts the offer and thus ending the main plot with them heading out with Louise congratulating Gene for what went down and of course...Gene opening the box that was supposed to be for Dino and him and her and everyone being covered in glitter. So that’s pretty much a somewhat alright main plot of the episode and despite some flaws, mostly coming from the pacing and whatnot but it was an alright one to kick off the new year. But then of course, we go to the subplot of the episode.
So while the whole thing with Gene goes on, Bob and Linda noticed that Teddy is acting weird when he entered the restaurant and thought that he was gonna get the usual in getting a burger but apparently, only hopped on by to tell them hi and head out while being a nervous wreck when it comes to hiding the job offer that he got. A job offer that may include working for the enemy temporarily and thinks that Bob would be upset over the fact of him working for the other side.
Of course, it didn’t even take long for Teddy to blab on out and reveals that he got a job offer for Jimmy Pesto throughout the week. And Teddy only kept it in secret because he is Bob’s best customer and Jimmy Pesto is his rival and working for your rival is like you got picked for your team in a game of dodgeball and taking on the other side, only to request a trade to the other team because your side sucks. That or switching political parties while in office. Something about that. But Bob doesn’t mind if he works for him, even if it’s for a week over there. But Teddy...oh god damn it, Teddy thinks that Bob is in denial over the idea of Bob working for Jimmy Pesto, mostly because they hate each other and thinks that him working for the guy would like hurt him and would not accept that and thus, ending up causing a scene and friction between the two throughout the episode. The whole episode. Beginning to think why there’s somehow of some fans not liking Teddy as a character as a whole.
Onto the next day with Teddy now at the restaurant, Bob’s restaurant, and of course, ends up making a fuss over the idea of working for Jimmy Pesto enough to possibly cause a scene...well somewhat of a scene because the customers are minding their own business. Whether if it’s wanting Bob to be upset over him working for Jimmy Pesto like he wanting for him to beg him back to even calling out Mort like he’s the new favorite in the spot. Which by the way, two Mort speaking roles in one season? Are we living in a parallel world right now? Are we really gonna get Mort to come back to have a speaking role once again? Because if it is, then...you might as well do God’s work for Mort fans...being like about 3% of the fanbase. Now maybe we can bring this boy back to the show...
Come on people! It’s been like 20-22 episodes since the last time we saw him, time to see the son again. This little fiasco of Mort being the new favorite by Teddy ends up creating a scene at the restaurant at the result with Teddy leaving the restaurant. And of course, at the dinner table following the whole mess that Louise caused that made Gene to get an age ban with Linda asking Bob to forgive for what went down, mostly over the whole thing of him working for Jimmy Pesto and no Linda, this has nothing to do with that sexy dream that you have made up. We need to have a long talk about that in the right amounts of wrong with that idea.
Oh and if you think that they would straight up apologize after creating a scene from yesterday? Well looks like that ain’t happening when Mort comes in and thus causing Teddy to come in as well with a coffee cup on his hand and spills it onto Mort’s suit with, not coffee because he would have a reaction to it like how drivers deal with when hitting a bump in the road or caught in traffic and the lip and cup becomes separated and have your nuts roasted in that one Christmas song about roasting on an open fire, but cold and slippery with fettuccine and stormed out. Oh god Teddy...what are we gonna do with you? So later on in the episode and in the day, Linda decided to say enough and enough and tells Bob to at least give him the attention of him being upset over the job position like he felt betrayed. Don’t add too much of the dramatics, just treat it like seeing your teammate that you somehow was getting along being on the other team via trade or free agency. Meet up, beat them, and cheer up. And he better do it unless the audience want more Mort abuse coming from Teddy and no one here want to see Mort abuse. Might as well run a PSA about the dangers of everyone named Mort to suffer this abuse.
Thus to the moment of Bob following Linda’s instructions and head on down across the street and meet up with Teddy and pretends to be upset the idea of him working for Jimmy Pesto and going behind his back and finally gotten the attention that he wanted, and no, I’m not calling him an attention whore though this whole subplot seems like it’s Teddy wanting this whole situation of him working for Jimmy Pesto to blow up onto Bob, and of course argue over the whole thing and Bob being upset over him working for the enemy and thus causing both Jimmy Pesto and Trev to come out and of course, mock over the idea of his best customer switching over the dark side. And of course, Bob coming back at the guy saying that unlike him, a real friendship. Which pretty much slips from his mouth that him and Teddy are best friends, a denial that he been stating since “Friend with Burger-fits” when he was looking out for him when it comes to his health. Also Trev just point out that he want what both Bob and Teddy have...yeah...I still question why you would even work for an ass in Jimmy Pesto? That’s the question that may now gonna haunt me every day until I die and punch my ticket to Hell. But either way, Bob and Teddy made up and Bob comes back to Linda, who now mocks him for overhearing that Freudian slip coming out of Bob about him and Teddy being best friends as we close out the subplot and the review as a whole for this episode. Can’t deny it Bob, seeing Teddy in every episode might as well make you two best friends for life. So uh...take that Walter Russo...who pretty much a mention and never shown up with the exception of Warren Fitzgerald...yeah.
Reaction/Thoughts:
So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? Well, to sum up my thoughts on this episode to kick off the new year...at least it’s better than the last episode what kicked off 2019. This was an alright episode to kick off the episode. Sure there might be some flaws around the subplot of the episode, mostly with how Teddy behave when trying to get Bob to be upset over the idea of him working for Jimmy Pesto, which I will get in just a moment. And for the main plot with Gene getting kicked out and Louise going on revenge mode on Dino, of course, like I said to wrap up the main plot, pacing because it felt like it was going a bit too fast and of course, predictable when it comes to the result for Louise to get back at Dino for hurting Gene, even though Gene don’t want any help and want to handle it by himself.Now, while I do like the idea of the younger sibling protecting the eldest with Louise protecting Gene and getting back at Dino for kicking him out from the Hi-Fi store for using the drum machine without any cash in his pocket, thus causing Louise to go on the offensive and strike back at Dino. But I do have to somewhat agree with Gene on this one. Here me out for a second, while yes, you don’t mess around with any member of the Belcher family, pretty much the equivalent of the phrase, “you mess with the bull, you get the horns”, but you also have someone like Gene who can take on take on the situation without any help whatsoever, whether if it’s this with Dino or two episodes ago with the theater and not getting the part.
And what Gene said to Louise following his loss against Dino in that drum machine challenge, it almost feels like he can’t handle a situation by his own and see him as the weakest member of the family, and we’re not including the whole being under pressure thing whether if it’s asking to be Courtney’s boyfriend or a sleepover at Alex’s home, but the idea of that just floating by without notice...yeah, not an okay in my book but I’mma leave that in like a very heated argument in the comments in how much of an ass I am. Guess the point is that when it comes to a Gene situation, better leave that to him and him alone and have help from a friend or family member like a lifeline in one of those quiz shows you see on TV.
Of course, I have some problems with the subplot...mostly with how it was played out. Mostly Teddy...I know that this was brought up by Bouchard himself during Comic Con last year about this season but...yeah, thought the idea of Teddy being with the opposite camp when it was brought up almost seems like coming from the roller episode with Gene losing Alex to be Courtney’s dance partner but this someone doesn’t seems like the case. I mean, Bob doesn’t mind if Teddy is doing some handyman work for the week, especially with Jimmy Pesto as the client, but Teddy keeps on being upset over the fact that Bob is in denial over the whole thing and we get it, Bob and Jimmy Pesto don’t like each other, kinda see where Teddy is stating when it comes to his job. But he has to cause a scene...not once, not twice, three times. Four if you count the fake argument. Not to mention Teddy accusing Mort of being the new favorite and dropping noodles on his suit. At least the whole thing is over with and don’t have to suffer through that. And of course, the whole Freudian slip from Bob thinking that Teddy’s best friend and not just a customer...the details are there man, you can’t deny it. Linda knows it. The audience pretty much knows it. So uh...hop on it. Admit Teddy’s your BFF so we can put this to rest.
So final thoughts on the episode...an alright episode to start off 2020. At least it’s not like “Lorenzo’s Oil” to kick off 2019 with a massive sour taste but hey...there’s progress. Do enjoy the idea of Louise going at Dino to protect Gene though I feel like Gene should’ve like handle it by himself, he did with the challenge, but I feel like no one has learned their lesson for two episodes ago. Linda did but not everyone else. Almost feels like they’re painting Gene as the weakest of the members and that’s something I’m probably not okay with. But at least this made this episode entertaining than the subplot, which may need some work but at least the whole slip from Bob about Teddy being his BFF was something and hey, at least we get another episode of Mort having a speaking role. You happy now? You happy? You happy that Mort got two episodes of him in a speaking role for this season? Y’all feel like this might go for three before the season ends. So I’ll give “Drumforgiven”...
...an 8 out of 10. But a low 8, not a full 8, a low 8. So there’s that. That’s my review for the new year and by the time this gets posted, already moved to a new HQ. Meaning that the live blog/tweet of the episode was the last episode over at the old base where the page first started. So Happy New Decade for me, the world almost ended to start off the new year.
