Bob's Burgers Season 10, Episode 12 Review - How Do You Solve a Problem Like Kaylee and Gym | yahoo201027's Bob's Burgers Reviews

So that was a very long hiatus we got since January for the burger fandom. Don’t know why Fox decided to do all that. Sure, we just had the Super Bowl, congrats to the Kansas City Chiefs and Andy Reid for finally winning a title. And just had the Oscars last week with a movie from South Korea, Parasite, sweeping the floor in the nominations. But yeah, thank god that the burger fandom is back and at the worst possible time because my computer died, thanks Windows. So if you wanna help me out and get me the money I need to get a new one, feel free to donate way down below at the end of the review to do all that.

In this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, things are going a bit too overboard for Tina as she tries to get along with her assigned kid, Kaylee, but ultimately failed as both Bob and Linda sign up for a gym membership at the store next door and feel the burn only to get exhausted from all that exercise in my spoilerific review of the twelfth episode of Season 10, titled “A Fish Called Tina”.

Well to sum up this episode in a nutshell, how the fuck did the subplot felt better than the main? Yeah, the episode was okay for starters, but the issue I have with this episode was mostly the main plot of it. Leading towards Tina herself and how they wrapped it up to close out the episode. Because although this was Tina’s time to shine when doing the whole mentorship program and gets to be around with her assigned fourth-grader in little Kaylee, she pretty much oversold it when trying to make an impression. I would say feel sorry for her but numerous times. Numerous times when Tina trying to impress her and trying to bond but pretty much embarrassed herself throughout the episode. That and how the whole thing with the little girl was not resolved by the end of the episode. Sure, the Tina thing of her trying to be the perfect mentor, that’s somewhat resolved to the point where she pretty much made a fool of herself. But Kaylee, yeah, no her saying “Hey Tina, I know that you’re trying to impress me even though you somewhat made me uncomfortable, but at least you tried and that’s good enough for me.” That crap. Never happened.

At least the subplot is alright, an apology letter for that abysmal subplot of last month’s episode with the whole Teddy thing. To the point of where a scene from it with Bob and Linda trying to get up following their day at the gym, yeah...that’s pretty much everyone following their time to get some exercise. And sadly, a scene that pretty much became relatable for everyone that pretty much became the apparent winner of the episode. So yeah, let’s get to the review to get this whole thing out of the way.

Kicking off the episode with the Belcher kids walking their way to school with Tina being all gritty and all hyped up and ready to go because it is the big day where the eighth graders get to be the mentors to the fourth graders, being that Tina’s grade will be mentoring Louise’s grade. So that would be something if it weren’t for the case that Tina won’t be Louise’s mentor. Nope, she’s gonna be one of the students in attendance in the big fish, little fish mentorship in a girl named Kaylee. And just before transitioning to the big moment, we get a flashback of her back in the fourth grade with a mentor of her own named Madison, who I think was a student over at Wagstaff back in the day. And thinks that what she did in the past is what going to help Tina with her kid once heading inside. So talk about following someone’s shadow in the world of mentorship. Just don’t be like...I don’t know, Peyton Manning in that one SNL skit if y’all remember that.

Onto the fourth grade classroom in the next scene with the eighth graders now stepping into the room and be paired up with their assigned fourth-graders and okay...okay, we may need to talk about the elephant in the room here. Like a massive elephant in the room full of fourth and eighth-graders.

Talking about this. Yes, talking about the redesign we got from Mr. Frond. Like did are missing something. Did we miss something since his last appearance? Don’t know if this was supposed to be a budget increase or possibly a different animator or producer doing all the dirty work? And this isn’t the first time Frond’s design gets a massive makeover. This happened before looking at the comparison down below.

Yeah, this is now the third time where Frond gets a redesign since his debut back in Season 1. And the first one only used for Season 1 until a minor change up for Season 2 up until the last season, which is Season 9. Now to Season 10, here we are again with a new design. Whether if it’s budget increase or a different animator and/or producer in the design department, it looks like we’re gonna be stuck with this version until a new design comes to the spotlight in...let’s say 2024. Yeah, let’s go with that.

So the eighth-grade class head on down to meet up with their assigned fourth-grader from Jimmy Jr with Arnold, the kid who was just introduced back at the end of Season 9, to Zeke and Rudy to Jocelyn and Harley to even Tammy and Louise, who let face it, these two don’t want to be paired up or even want to be around. More on that. And for Tina, now to be with little Kaylee and to the point of her imagining the future of her being all grown up in a middle of a TED talk and have a grown-up version of Tina being held as a woman of honor for the mentorship program. Guess this is where the expectation vs reality comes into play with Tina’s little daydream to what we’re going to expect in this episode.

Because not even a full minute into the whole program and already Tina is dealing with some problems when trying to bond with Kaylee when coming up with stuff like their interests and hoping if she has the same interests as her, but it looks like that’s not going to be the case and begins to overselling it in the impression department, thus putting in her straight up panic mode when it comes to stuff like different types of bread and hoping for the same response as her with Tina being sourdough and Kaylee being rye. Hmm, I’m more of a white, somewhat honey wheat type of person if I say so myself. And pretty much embarrassed herself all the way towards the lunch bell rang. So uh...things aren’t looking too good for Tina here when trying to connect with Kaylee. Would say she may have shot herself in the foot but it’s too early to tell. Speaking of the big fish and little fish, Tammy and Louise.

So while this whole mess that Tina has now spewed takes place, it’s no surprise that Tammy doesn’t want to do this being the big fish and Louise don’t want to do this as the small fish to the point where they found common ground and asks Frond that if it’s okay to head outside and pretends that they like the outdoors and would “explore” and “experience nature”. Even though that’s pretty much a big fat lie, leaning towards pants on fire in the Politico fact-checking wheel thingy. But rather than calling Louise out in one of her random excuses to not do anything, just straight up accepts it and let the two go. Hell, it even lasts all the way to the next day. But besides all that, things aren’t going well for Tina and Kaylee despite that Zeke and Rudy seems to be getting along. And same for Jimmy Jr and Arnold since “Yes Without My Zeke” after saving Zeke’s skin from being taken away. Look at that, progress!

Onto the cafeteria we go with Tina looking at Kaylee all alone at her lunch table with a book in her hand and Tina wants to head on down and try again. Going for act two to impress her and have a good ol’ time between big fish and little fish by separating herself from Gene and Louise and head down to the table and sits next to her, in which sadly, making her uncomfortable. Telling her what book she’s reading and hoping to catch up in a way to bond like a parent trying to hang out with their teenage offspring with their favorite things only to fall flat on its face. It’s like The Goofy Movie except Goofy didn’t make things uncomfortable in front of his kid like what Tina is doing to Kaylee. Speaking of Tina, she read the book, well going the audiobook route, in hopes to catch up with one book while at the reading table in hopes to get this train rolling for tomorrow when she meets up with Kaylee once again. That and discussing what Bob and Linda went through during the day with their visit to the day and feeling the burn like they’re 10-20 years younger and discussing what MILF is courtesy of Louise and Linda. Would tell y’all what the word means but I don’t wanna get banned so that’s pretty much y’all’s ballpark right there.

Onto the next day, we go with the mentors and their kids doing the drawing section of the program where the small fish goes first doodling and then the big fish and so on and so on. Starting with Jimmy Jr and Arnold, then to Zeke and Rudy, and even Jocelyn and Harley at their station. And of course, to Tina and Kaylee with her (Tina) telling her (Kaylee) about the book she read last night and thinks that she all caught up. Except there’s one minor issue, keyword “minor” when it comes to that. Because Kaylee tells Tina that the book she read yesterday that lead to her reading all night is a part of a series. A series that included 10 books and prequels. Don’t know if that was pretty much a jab to the Harry Potter franchise because it was a book series before it adapted into movies that boosted success and not to mention, the prequels with Fantastic Beasts. Oh man, has it been almost 10 years since the franchise ended? My god, time flies so fast. That lead to Tina put the panic mode risen up to DEFCON 36 to DEFCON 63, a DEFCON 27-point up from what we are witnessing. She is pretty much shooting herself right in the foot. The other foot I mean since the first one was already shot from yesterday when the whole thing began. And my god, it...it’s pretty much hard to watch coming from Tina as luck has already run out from her system. Much like the Texans in the first half against the Chiefs in the Divisional.

And it looks like Tina’s situation has gotten from bad to worse for her after landing herself at Mr. Frond’s office with him telling her that he got a complaint notice about her behavior, found out that the person who called in the notice was of course, Kaylee, for her trying to overselling it when it comes to impressions and making her uncomfortable for two solid days. TWO SOLID DAYS!!! That’s not trying to make friends and become a mentor, that’s pretty much signaling a restraining order in your future. And because of her behavior to make little Kaylee uncomfortable, Tina’s time with Kaylee has come to a close and now in need of a new kid to be on her side. And her reaction to the news is pretty much not the type of response you would get from Tina. Normally, it would be her usual groan or her being depressed and just waived the white flag. Nope, puked. Threw up on the floor after finding out that the kid called her out and kicks her to the curb. So again, things aren’t looking good for Tina in the mentorship program enough to be separated from her assigned fourth grader. And speaking of the eighth/fourth grader bonding time.

Tammy and Louise. We see Louise playing around on the ground in the playground with her building a path for an army of ants as Tammy takes various selfies on the ground and try to mess around before posting it online and thinks that she’s having a tropical vacation. Nothing wrong with that this time of year since it is the Winter. Of course, Louise sensed a minor issue when it comes to Tammy’s photos in the aspect of the background and how the photo would set up because the slide would be present and the same goes for the school. Thus Louise steps in for some help and make some sandhills from the ground of the playground and lie down like she was lying on an actual beach So that was something for Louise to do and for Tammy of all people not including the whole thing in “Lice Things Are Lice” with Nurse Liz thinking that Tammy had head lice but reveals to be bad dandruff, when it comes to tweaking up the background of each of the photos and it looks like it will be sticking on for quite a while for the two. Look at that, Louise Belcher: Expert Background Expert. That or should be good at photoshop. You know photoshop is a thing now, right? Just making sure.

Onto the ice cream social between the big fish and little fish with Kaylee now with her new mentor in Zeke and for Tina, it looks like she will the mentor for Rudy. So them, along with Louise and Gene for some reason, has to blend in as an eighth-grader so that he can get a scoop, and meet up with...guess who? Kaylee and Zeke. You think that Tina would like to stand down following what happened and just move on and try to a fresh start, or restart or whatever, with Rudy now as the underling. But instead, she decided to shoot her foot once again, that foot is now a gaping hole, and try to make her jealous enough for her to come back into her arms. Really? This is how you’re gonna get Kaylee back? Why not go to her lawn and carry a boombox or phone with a Bluetooth speaker attached and play a song to get her back. Though saying that whole thing, it sounds like a very bad idea to come up with for Tina to get Kaylee back. To the point where Tammy pulls Louise out to do another photoshoot, which leads to them at the nurse’s office with the aquarium present and thinks that Tammy’s underwater in scuba gear, you know some exploration. Cancun. Leaving Gene to get a front-row seat to watch everything implode in front of his own eyes. And the implosion happened with now Rudy getting some health issues, mostly choking on some scoops as Tina try to win back Kaylee.

And that of course, landed Tina back to Frond’s office and because of not even watching a hair of Rudy and being his mentor after losing Kaylee thanks to a complaint, Rudy also filed a complaint and crawled back to Zeke, so it looks like Zeke now has two fourth graders under his wings and for Tina, down to zero. Wow Tina, not even a full week and already, you lost two people under your wing. I mean god damn, that might be a new record and not the good kind. You made one child, Kaylee, uncomfortable in hopes to bond by trying it too hard to being a neglectful one when trying to win Kaylee back while unnoticing that Rudy was choking on a scoop. God, I don’t want to know what would happen if that were to be brought up during a college admission or job interview with the resume being brought up. Oh yeah, and another vomit response courtesy of Tina and just missed the bucket that Frond had it on standby from the last encounter. Had that planned in case of a worst-case scenario was being brought up and still miss the shot at the bucket. Kind of feel sorry for the custodian when doing puke duty.

Tina decided to get some help from an old face over at the local kabob shop in the form of her old mentor back in her fourth grade days in Madison, who is now an employee over there working at the counter. Tina tells Madison about how much of an experience she got back when she (Madison) was the mentor and Tina being the assigned kid and now that she got the title of mentor, it’s not easy as what she went through back in the day and pretty much overselling it to the point where she ended up losing two kids on one week. And of course, getting a flashback to that first day where she just got out from the lunch counter and carrying a tray with a bowl of chili in her hands, only for the steam from it to fog up her glasses and causes her to hit a trash can and resulting in the chili to be spilled over her, front and back. I swear, trash cans have become the bane to everyone’s existence. First the whole sign-stealing scandal, and now chili-gate. Next you’ll say that trash cans may be going to end up interfere with this year’s presidential election.

Madison popped up out of nowhere and decided to distract the kids present in the cafeteria by shaking a can of soda and open it, unleashing a massive spill like a volcanic eruption enough for Tina to exit out in a hurry and get cleaned up in the bathroom. A moment that Tina would never forget on that faithful, but sort of unfaithful day back in her fourth grade days. A moment that Tina wants to relieve once her time as a big fish comes into play. However in Madison’s case in her experience as a mentor, although Tina was glad that she doesn’t have to live through the embarrassment with the chili and being the joke of the campus with her peers thinking that she shat herself, she tells her that history can’t repeat itself after one little encounter. And okay, let’s say if this were like an old ass cartoon from like the 1940s and a character, being protagonist or antagonist, got into quite some trouble and decided to break the fourth wall and asks the viewer whatever he or she should do to clean up this mess. Imagine that being a thing in this episode.

And that what Tina decided to do and not listen to what her old mentor, her old big fish, her Obi-Wan to her Anakin and relive the whole thing by embarrassing Kaylee with a big ol’ bowl of chili waiting to be dropped on her to make sure it was an accident. Again, this is NOT how you resolve shit. I mean, Gene almost did it when conspiring with Doug to poison Alex with a sesame filled drink only to bow out at the last minute. At least that got resolved but here? Looks like that’s not going to be the case for the 13-year-old prepubescent female of the Belcher clan. I feel like this is going to follow what Gene did and not do anything stupid. Better than the last episode where technically playing a game of chicken is going to solve anything, which pretty much isn’t. Might as well stay at home, lock yourself in your room, and waste the day away.

Onto the day of the part of the program where both the big and little fishes have to share their experience throughout the week, we have Tina ready to pull out all of the stops to win Kaylee back, even if it means embarrassing her in front of everyone, by pulling out a bowl of chili out of her backpack and dumping it into the plate and prepare to head towards where Kaylee is at as everyone are sharing their experience as a distraction, not even noticing that Tina is on her way to ruin a little girl’s day on the last day of the week of the mentors, or in this case, Tina’s bad week in a nutshell. But it looks like the chili ride to hell hits a bump in the road and instead of hitting Kaylee with the plate of chili.

It’s Tina who gets plastered by it. And sadly, history has repeated itself, only for Tina to get splatted by the plate and not on Kaylee like what she intended. You know Tina, there’s a great person in the quote department that once said the following, “Karma’s a bitch”. Spilled all over her thanks to thanks to Large Tommy, who didn’t even notice Tina walking by and heading across the room. And look who decided to come up to Tina’s defense following that fallout with the chili now all over the shirt and skirt and enough to make her smell like the food?

None other than Louise Belcher. Trying to buy some time for Tina to exit out of the room by telling one who’s the perfect mentor for her and no, it’s not Tammy despite being the poster child of fixing backgrounds and knowing the basics of click-baiting, it’s Tina. A bit lost here, so did Louise became Tina’s little fish after losing Kaylee and Rudy in one week? Did Louise ask Frond for a change even she’s pretty much Tammy’s despite that Zeke has two kids under his wing? Well, it looks like those are the answers that won’t be answered. And the resolution, Tina finally out and head out to clean herself out...absolutely pointless. Like what the hell was that? Like no apology? No cleaning the mess up? Just head out in shame despite Louise saving your skin? Tina...would say feel sorry for you for what happened with this episode but almost seems like in the form of you kind of deserved it. And it looks like the whole thing with Kaylee may now never to be resolved, so thanks for that! Let’s get to the subplot before I begin to throw a temper tantrum enough to possibly break my bedroom windows.

o while the tire fire known as the main plot of the episode was in play, as Linda head out and check on Bob when sweeping the sidewalk, they get approached by a new neighbor from the store next door and noticed about how well they are when it comes to the fitness variety and wants them to join the gym, which happens to be next door. I would say anything like having a gym next to a burger restaurant, but that would lead to making a fat joke and that is waaaay beneath me for that. So the first scene of the subplot is pretty much this guy right here, the owner of the new gym, inviting Bob and Linda to try to work out and give them a rain check. Probably a firm maybe but they’ll think about it but not really. Also ironic that this episode also includes the return of Ben Schwartz on the show because it aired on the 16th and the It's on the same weekend as the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie that was supposed to be released in like November of last year but got pushed back due to uh...

Reasons. Lots and lots of reasons. And of course, this isn’t Schwartz’s first bite of the cherry because he was in the show before and you already know who was the character he voiced. Been seven years now since we last saw him and people are begging for him to come back, mostly because the pairing wars has now gotten to Hell since then that may or may not have something to do with a powerhouse of a pairing that pretty much controls whatever the direction of the series is heading. Declare it as the pot calling the kettle black, I don’t care. Feels like there’s a conspiracy that just popped out of nowhere.

Back in the restaurant, we go with both Bob and Linda doing their usual work following their encounter with the gym owner with Bob, while cooking, being tempted by his body to try out the gym. But he’s not the only one who gets tempted by thinking of heading out to next door because Linda also wants to jump in and try working out. And thus leading them, after discussing with Teddy, to enter the lion’s den in the form of the gym next door. Of course, when it comes to going to the gym, being local or a corporation, you can’t like barge in for free like you just download something that may or may not have some massive amounts of consequences waiting to happen, you need to have a membership. Much like Netflix subscriptions. And what would they do once everything is all settled?

Feeling the burn. Hearts on fire, strong desire! Yep, Bob and Linda decided to take a spin in the world of exercise from Bob getting some arm work with waving some ropes to Linda lifting some weights, getting some work on those guns. Getting some legwork and pulling levers, it looks like things are going well for the two to get some workout and making them a bit younger. Let’s hope Bob doesn’t lose pieces of his mustache again because we don’t want to relieve the events of “Sliding Bobs”, most importantly, the monstrosity known as Tina’s story of an alternate version of the show. Nobody wants to deal more with that Charlize shit. Of course, getting some exercise may be good for the body to get the flow and blood going and keep the youth going without aging rapidly, there’s always gonna be that time where you head on home and feel tired and sweaty and somewhat smell like sweat and feel like you just had enough and feel like your body shut decided to shut down for the night?

That’s pretty much sums up Bob and Linda the next morning when trying to get out of bed and ready to have another go of exercise at the gym, that and opening up the restaurant, but have to deal with a little issue that they’re now having in not getting up due to the amounts of pressure added to their bodies like in Dragon Ball Z when training in X amounts of gravity to handle when training and unless they’re like Goku and Vegeta, who dealt that shit, Bob and Linda are no match with the pressure from what happened yesterday. To the point where once you dealt with the massive amounts of exercise you got, whether if it’s the arms or the legs or any part of your body, it’s like carrying an empty bin when trying to climb up the stairs all the way to the top with stuff added into the said bin one step after another. The more you step, the more weight the bin gets added. And it’s not because of old age mostly because Bob and Linda are in their forties. That’s another topic that comes never.

And the problem with their bodies continues when we head down to the restaurant with Bob now having trouble controlling it when dealing with the heaviness of the body when trying to do their work and the same goes for Linda. And Teddy now begins to worry about the two and feared what the gym did to them from what happened to them, even though the two think that it’s nothing to worry about even though it now garners attention from the customers in attendance.

Once that was blown over with now only Teddy being the only one in the building, we have the gym leader coming into the place and checks up to see if Bob and Linda are ready for another go but following what happened from yesterday that leads to them having problems with their bodies, it looks like they’re ready to throw in the towel and sit this one out. So technically calling it quits and they would do that except to the point where the contract comes into play and they cannot get out. No one ever reads the fine print to see if there’s any tomfoolery that might be coming in. Much like with the terms and conditions when you’re downloading apps. So they’re pretty much in a sticky pickle with the whole thing and not like in the whole sticky pickle thing with the whole Tina mentorship tire fire that we just saw. I mean, the guy also wants Teddy to join in when doing the same thing as what happened to Bob and Linda yesterday. I swear, I feel like he’s not only the owner and manager of the gym but also an expert persuader at best. Be wary of those types of people. Especially during the campaign season.

So Bob and Linda are now pretty much stuck with the whole thing thanks to a contract and with no way out of it, looks like they decided to go back to the gym once again. But in their usual way like what happened yesterday into today where they were feeling optimistic over the whole experience.

Cue them back into the gym with Linda in her workout outfit but Bob with a sweater on him even though this is a gym full of exercise machines, not training out in the open snow training to be a part of the Winter Olympics. And they’re doing it in front of two new people who are exploring the idea of joining and decided to show the downside of what to expect once you’re down hitting the gym and mess around. And of course, we get Teddy coming in and ready to join in as well and hit the equipment. I’m telling you, it’s the persuasion. So I think that’s about that for this subplot, mostly Bob and Linda trying to say that exercise is bad. Actually no, no, still need exercise to stay alive and hope we don’t become couch potatoes. Their contracts are now ripped up and don’t worry about the gym, it’s not gonna live long because this is the store next door and knowing the opening with gags in each and every episode, yeah. Shut it down, guys. Shut it all down to the ground.

Reaction/Thoughts:

So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? Where do I even begin with this? I have some problems with the main plot of the episode, mostly when it comes to Tina and how she was handling the problem when dealing with the whole trying to bond with her assigned fourth-grader, Kaylee. From beginning to end and how Tina was acting throughout the week of the mentorship to the point of her losing not one, but two kids under her wing. That’s something that may not be going to leave at any time soon as long as how long the season lasts. Or in this case, until May rolls in.

Tina pretty much embarrassed herself throughout the whole thing. The whole freaking thing from start to finish. It’s pretty much hard to watch when it comes to watching this whole train wreck as it was being played out. Like what the actual fuck was that? And she tried to use her time when she was covered in chili only for her mentor distract everyone and used that experience when her time as a mentor has come but only to fail through. She pretty much oversold it when it comes to trying to bond with Kaylee enough to alert Frond to be separated from her and end up as Zeke’s with Rudy being Tina’s, only to call a complaint once again and now down to zero, one if you think Louise would’ve been a reasonable choice. And even Madison, her former big fish, tells her that every moment isn’t going to be the chili incident back in the day, but ending up twisting some words and does the opposite, only to fall flat and history repeats itself with Tina, once again, being covered in chili.

Tina pretty much overselling herself to impress Kaylee. No resolution, no apology whatsoever to put this thing to rest but instead, all we get is Tina pretty much exiting out, probably in shame, with Louise distracting everyone from poking fun on Tina. Hell, the whole thing with Zeke and Rudy seems enjoyable than this. Fuck, Jimmy Jr and Arnold would’ve been a clear thing to watch and these two seem to get along since the events of “Yes Without My Zeke”.

At least the subplot seems decent enough. Sure, it’s kind of slow and seems like it was going nowhere, to say the least, but at least that was somewhat enjoyable than the main plot of the episode. Mostly them being stuck on the bed and having trouble getting up and feeling the pressure built into their bodies following a full day of hitting the gym and heading down the stairs. Surprising that they didn’t even have the trouble to change clothes with the issues they were having. And it’s somewhat nice to hear Schwartz again, though as another character who is, of course, a one-off character that won’t be making a return at any given time. But besides all, this was a decent episode but mostly in the subplot section. The main plot of it, the main meat of things, oh goddamn it Tina. Could say she tried with the whole mentorship program but she pretty much embarrassed herself. All while trying to get little Kaylee’s attention. And if that were to be the case if she were to have a kid, give it time. I guess. I’m not a parent but still. That’s pretty much hard to watch this to turn into a train wreck. And because of that, I’ll be giving “A Fish Called Tina” a rating of...

6.5 out of 10. A bit harsh but man, there were some problems despite some parts of the episodes I like. So 6.5 out of 10 is the final score for this episode. Let’s hope next week’s episode doesn’t screw up like this week’s and of course, the big episode. The return of Best Girl. Jessica makes her big return in the thirteenth episode of Season 10, “Three Girls and a Little Wharfy”.
