Bob's Burgers Season 10, Episode 3 Review - Strap Off the Boat and Fire House of Woes | yahoo201027's Bob's Burgers Reviews

Last week, it was man and his son looking for a rare mushroom that somehow made the episode flat. This week, it’s a man and his daughter partaking in cardboard boat making in participating for the Thundergirls boat race and somehow, we made the mushroom episode of last week seems like a distant memory until next year when I bring it up in the Day in Fandom History posts over at Tumblr, Twitter, and Instagram, hoping that next Fall, which is the General Election in the 2020 race, doesn’t become a massive inextinguishable tire fire.

In this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, it’s the father/daughter boat race for the Thundergirls with Bob and Tina making a boat, only for Tina to feel uncomfortable when it comes to Bob and the usage of tape while Linda take both Gene and Louise to an open house at a fire station and downplay the whole visit from left to right in my spoilerific review of the third episode of Season 10, titled “Motor, She Boat”.

After last week’s episode that felt flat with Bob and Gene going mushroom hunting and Tina trying out her new glasses, we got an alright episode. I don’t hate it, but there were some little problems that I have with the episode. Mostly being that it was predictable and the direction seems like it was going nowhere at some certain points but at least it didn’t downplay the entire episode from both plots. Glad that we have another Bob and Tina episode. It’s rare to see this in action with these two in play and I think that the last episode we have that was like around 2013 in the Season 4 episode “Bob and Deliver” and have the Thundergirls boat race in play, as well as having Troop 257 back after their first introduction with the whole mole fiasco with the cookie sales, so there’s that. And at least we have a subplot that is decent in my liking, whether you like it or hate it or even tolerate it, your opinion, and despite it was predictable and whatnot, at least it’s better than last week’s with Tina’s glasses or even with the season premiere with Gayle, so the jury is out with this one even though you may have some ideas.

It's the upcoming father/daughter boat race for the Thundergirls troops and their dads and as for Bob and Tina, it’s the special time of year where these two make a boat and nothing said some father and daughter bonding like making a boat in hopes to win a race and put it on the shelf. Unless you’re Tina because when the idea of building a boat with cardboard and tape was brought up and with Bob on board...Bob is not good when it comes to the use of tape. Not good with using tape and tape is your ultimate get out of jail free card when it comes to fixing stuff or using it for a project rather than using glue to mess things up and no one should mess it up. Bob...is not one of those people when it comes to taping things. And we have examples of Bob showing that he’s not good with tape from wrapping a present, in which the package fell off. To fixing the rear view mirror, only for the mirror to fell off with the wire still attached. Even to fixing Tina’s glasses, which was broken for unknown reasons, and it breaks again from Tina’s face. Which I think that’s how Tina has to get the new glasses in the last episode other than the whole vision waste of time experience, so there, mystery solved...I guess. Point is, according to Tina unable to tell Bob in his face that he’s bad in taping stuff, he’s bad in taping stuff. Hell, the family think that he’s bad at taping things. Fuck, even with Flex Tape, Bob’s bad in that stuff and the motherfucker in the commercial motherfucking saw a boat in half. There might be some problems for Bob as the review progresses with this week’s episode.

Onto the meeting and what to know about the upcoming race from meeting the judge of the race, which happens to be somewhat of a nervous wreck over impressing the heads so that she can get a promotion, to knowing the basics and rules and guidelines of the boat race from head to toe. They’re going traditional with cardboard, tape, and glue as the only tools you need for a father and daughter team to make a boat if they want to participate in the race. And sadly, worrying about anyone’s safety like let’s say the boat fall off and get sent away by the waters. Somebody better have a lifeguard or even the coast guard to come in on standby, just putting it out there. Additional stuff like adding a motor to the boat or even a fan like you see in boats in swamps aren’t allowed in the boat making process because that’s pretty much the equivalent of steroids in a boat race or adding nitrogen rather than oil to your car for speed racing purposes.

And then the others step in to ask about special requests to add for themselves from Jodi asking to wrapping herself up so that the water doesn’t touch her because...it’s a river. Fish pee in there and also not to mention possible pollutants in the water. In which the judge allows her to do so. And then we get to Harley, didn’t even recognize her being a part of the Thundergirls now and in Tina’s group now, I guess it may have something to do with what happened following the events of “Tina Tailor Soldier Spy” with Louise only in to help Tina to catch the mole and when she called it quits after that episode, to fill in the spot, here enter Harley to fill in. Either that or just there to be in because wacky hijinks because the synopsis said so. So she asks that if there’s a duck swimming towards where the race is at and needed a ride a la Uber or Lyft is okay and the judge said yes. At least it’s not a goose because the last thing we need is either Bruce the Goose to make a little cameo or even that goose from that Untitled Goose game that people is currently talking about.

I’m watching you, you feathered bastard. Yeah, that and every other question causes the judge to sweat if you can see the sweat coming out of her pits and already becoming a nervous wreck that she is like she’s bound to mess it up with this race and of course, head out. And just as the judge is exiting stage left...

Bob spotted Troop 257 on the other side of the room, being the most juvenile troop in the whole Thundergirl organization, in the local chapter, and of course, since we last saw them back in Season 5, they were accused and mostly caught red handed with the whole mole thing with the troop sending Rena to go undercover and get the details, only for Tina and Louise to stopped her and them at the restaurant. You think that the troop would like dissolve or be put on suspension following that, think they did in between that and this week’s episode, and now they’re back into play with the upcoming boat race with Tina trying to be friendly and hoping for either one to not go after her following the whole mole thing but they said to her that they changed their ways and said that they’re saints and think that they decided to not do bad things ever again...which I don’t buy it because episode reasons but also it’s 257. It’s like saying if a robber who happened to be a member of your family just got out of prison and say that he or she decided to turn over a new leaf and put the past away only go back to the life of crime and you’re back to square one. So yeah, Troop 257, back in the game of the episode and what Bob said, they’re the type of group that you do not want to mess around. To the point of where one of the members have a tear drop tattoo on her face. An actual tattoo, unless she drew that with a sharpie, on her face. If one of the members of your troop have that on her face...there is like massive amounts of problems we may have.

Onto the boat building process in the basement with Tina and Bob cutting up cardboard into pieces and with the tape on standby, in which Bob has it on his hands and when Tina sees him with it on his hands, feels uncomfortable and trade away the tape with a marker but when seeing him doing the design causing Bob to hand Tina the market and possibly the whole thing with Bob going upstairs. Enter Linda to ask Bob on why isn’t he downstairs to help Tina out. In which Bob answers as Tina ran out of ink for the marker and about to head on down to get another one and overheard the conversation between the two and Bob thinks that she doesn’t need him anymore and think that she’s growing up and wanted to be independent...even though the main meat is that Bob is not good when it comes to taping stuff and Tina doesn’t want to hurt his feeling and call it out. So out of the blue after overhearing the conversation between Bob and Linda, Tina go asks her dad to help her out once again, letting pity to take over the building process rather than telling the truth about his not-so useful skills. This is going to bite Tina in the A come the event. Speaking of that...

It’s the day of the boat event with Bob and Tina carrying their now built boat deep into the forest where they stumble into the Judge of the event, named Karen. Karen, why did you take the kids? Goddamn Karen, it’s been that long! I don’t know where that meme come from but...yeah, Karen here is a nervous wreck when it comes to the boat race and now becoming more of a wreck now that she knows that the National, possibly the heads, are coming by to visit and check out on the boat race, which puts on even more pressure onto her as the race is entering its final preparations before the whole event begins as Karen head out, we see Troop 257 coming in and passing through Bob and Tina with their boat and you want to feel bad for the leader of the troop, Bethany, for trying to be the cool mom and being the cool leader and want to get the respect that she deserve in a group full of girls who can be...let’s just say...needs improvement when it comes to the nice scale if that ever existed. You just gotta feel bad for the poor woman, I mean seriously, think she deserve better, don’t you think?

Onto over the boat inspection we go with one of the members of Troop 257, Patty, having her boat inspected and pass it with everyone going over theirs as both Bob and Tina are about to get ready for their inspection, which later pass the whole thing meaning it’s them given the green light, the boat begins to fall apart piece by piece as they are about to put the boat into the water but just as they are about to do that as the boat breaks apart like a building that just finished construction but fell apart quickly due to lack of beams or whatever to hold the building from falling into pieces...

We have Rena being stuck in a tree with everyone crowding around the said tree with Rena telling the reason that she got up is because she saw a squirrel and took her stash...for no whatever reason. Yeah, you can feel the bullshit polluting the atmosphere coming from Rena when stating that squirrels just popped out of nowhere and stole her stash away and just out of nowhere. I mean yeah, mishaps can happen whether if it’s accidentally contracting fire ants resulting in bites or getting lost in the woods and experience a bear out of the open...from Rena...unless it’s like the same squirrel from let’s say Kars from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, let’s go with that, yeah, something tells me Troop 257 is creating a diversion to make sure they cheat their way to winning a trophy into their compartment. But it looks like Rena being stuck in a tree isn’t the only thing that got people’s attention.

Tina gets upset over the whole boat getting torn apart and finally tells Bob that he’s horrible at taping things and because of that, she fears that they have already lost the race because of that bad use of the object and asks Bob to be benched with the other dads at the picnic table and thus the team known as “Tad”, a combination of Tina and dad, is no more thanks to Bob’s horrible taping skills as she now storms off deep into the woods, mumbling to herself about what happened with the boat being fallen apart with Bob and his tape skills, though that was all your fault because you let pity take over the whole thing, and stumbled into Troop 257 switching boats following Rena being stuck on a tree.

Back to square one we go and it looks like 257 is cheating their way to winning the whole thing, mostly with Patty switching boats which happened to be the same boat but one of the boats have a motor attached so that she can go fast and beat Tina and the other contenders in the race. Remember that analogy with the robber? Yeah, should’ve held on to that once this scene arrive. So it looks like Troop 257 have been caught red handed by Tina and they would like silence her by either tying her up and sit her down on the ground behind a tree or in their case, murder her, which okay, calm down. That’s pretty much if you find out your friend’s secret and when your friend stepped in and found you with that secret and you tell him or her that you won’t tell anyone and then...well, you get the picture.

But no, instead of that, they just let Tina to go tell Karen about what 257 is doing when it comes to switching the boats. Like that. Just give the green light for her to do so...you kind of feel something is very wrong here when it comes to that and once Tina arriving towards Karen and asks her about 257 switching their boats with boats with motors attached. And you think that this would be her time to shine and finally gain some confidence and disqualify Patty for that but nope, let it investigate it after the race is done with...in which she will win if the motor cardboard boat goes into effect. That’s like if a football player from the other team got accused of using PEDs, making you like some sort of superhuman on the field, and you’re asking the ref to be ejected, only for the refs to give a look but only after the game is done. You thought that the refs over at the NFL were bad, take a look over at Karen as it looks like she’s acting weird over the whole accusation of 257 switching boats. And y’all better hold on to that once we head on later on in the review because it looks like things are really going to get wonky with Karen and Troop 257 and what they’re doing in this boat race. Might as well hold an emergency meeting over the whole thing.

So Tina tried to alert everyone that 257 is up to no good about switching boats and Karen doesn’t seems to care about officiating and disqualifying Patty but it looks like they don’t even seem to care. Bought the idea of the troop turning over a new leaf and not to mention Tina calling Bob out when it comes to the boat falling apart, so it looks like she now need to patch things up with her father if she want to prevent Patty and the rest of Troop 257 to win the whole thing by cheating.

Speaking of Bob, Tina walks up to her at the picnic tables full of the dads that some of the members of the organization have been benched by their daughters, or as I call it “The Island of Misfits Dads”, and apologize about what happened and caused a scene in front of everyone about what happened with the whole tape thing and also alerted him that 257 is up to no good and found out that Patty is switching boats with a motor attached and also came up with a theory that Karen, the judge of the race, might be cahoots with 257 because think about it, when Tina was given the green light from the troop to go tell Karen about their wrongdoings, you kind of sensed that something is wrong here like they’re not even concerned over it. Not wanting to go after her but nope, just them being chill over it. And when Tina walked up to Karen, she said that she would investigate it but only once the race is done with. Ergo, the theory of Karen being in cahoots with 257 to give them an easy win come up from Tina’s head and it feels like it that may now be the case. So it looks like Bob come up with an idea for Tina to switch boats like what they’re doing, most a reverse switcheroo from a boat with a motor to a boat without it and Tina agrees to the idea and they decided to go ahead with it. That and of course, apologize about what happened even though Tina let pity into the picture. I mean bless her heart that she don’t want to her dad’s feelings but...should’ve been honest earlier in the episode.

Of course, they needed a diversion to get the plan into motion if they want to get the boat away from the waters and not having either Patty or the others seeing them taking the boat away. And that’s where we have looking at the screencap...

We have the dads from the Island of Misfit Dads up top on the tree with everyone crowding around like with Rena not too long ago when Troop 257 took Patty’s boat and switch it with the boat with the motor attached to it and now, it’s the reverse with Bob and Tina taking the boat deep into the woods where the original boat is at and was about to make a switch...

Only to get caught by Bethany, who out of nowhere was peeing in the woods and you think that she would call Bob and Tina out and get them disqualified but it looks like rather than doing that, she decided to help them out and it looks like Tina’s little hypothesis about Karen being in cahoots with Troop 257 is on fleek and it looks we get a reason of why Karen is need of Troop 257’s help in hopes to get promoted and not embarrass herself and Bethany think that Karen getting promoted to regionals is a bad, bad thing to imagine that might become reality if the plan goes through meaning that she’ll get to be in charge of the cookie routes and could hand Troop 257 an easy route while every troop in the organization gets a massive middle finger. So you could say that Troop 257, with Karen taking the wheel, could have their cake and it looks like they’re going to eat it too. And there’s a reason why Karen has to be in league with 257 and how we ended up in this mess and it’s over the fact that Karen had a lost pug...that wasn’t hers and failed to give the poor dog back to it’s owner like it’s a legitimate kidnapping, or rather dognapping, and even to the point where she cut the collar off and dyed it’s fur blonde. I mean...I know that she’s a nervous wreck but fuck. I mean you could say that it’s possible that they might be blackmailing her if they don’t get their way but...really? The pug?! Why the pug?! The hell is wrong with you?!

And thus, here we are, the big event known as the cardboard boat race and if you think that this race would be close between the girls, mostly between Tina and Patty, but due to the fact that it’s a 22-minute program, 30 if you add commercials, and we’re at the two minute warning of the game, so you may know where this is going. So let’s break down the race piece by piece. Jodi gets the boot first and fallen behind to last place due to her arms being covered in plastic wraps to keep the germs out. Can’t blame her for being a massive germaphobe since her debut though this is coming from someone who is in the soccer team that has the worst record in standings that make Dolphins and Bengals look relevant who has to deal with dirt from the ground when missing the ball.

Then we get to Patty and ready to bring out the big guns in the form of the motor only to not figuring it out that the boat have been switched from one with a motor to one without courtesy of Tina, who is now gaining ground. Which of course, now begins to piss her off and decided to go old school and make her way with paddle to beat Tina in the boat race. You could say it was neck and neck and it is and the winner of the race goes to the following and...

Tina came up second with Patty at first and girl who we forgot she ever existed named Rupa coming in third. But hey, top three with the silver medal...not a total loss if you’re like an egotistical asshole. Yeah. And if you think that Patty would be like glad over the fact that she won first and possibly gloat at Tina but because of the boat switch with the motor absent from under it, it feels like a total loss and felt upset over it. But it looks like Patty’s isn’t the only person who is dealing with a total loss after this week’s events of an episode.

We have Karen here who trying to impress Julianne, one of the members from the board, trying to be the “hero” and trying to find the motor despite not noticing that Bob and Tina switched boats and well, the impression failed and it may look like she may not get the promotion. So uh...looks like the plan fell apart and it looks like it’s Tina who has saved the day once again prevent a possible blowout from Patty despite that Patty did win first place but of course, upset over not wanting to win in the cheating route. And it looks like that won’t be the last for Troop 257 to make an appearance on the show as both Bob and Tina celebrate the win and later encounter Linda, Gene, and Louise walking home from their encounter with firefighter hats on and that’s where we’re diving into the subplot of the episode.

So while Bob and Tina are building the boat for the race down in the business, Linda got some mail with one of them stated that there’s a nearby fire station that is holding an open house event and think that it should be a fun event to visit to bring Gene and Louise into fire house. But both Louise and Gene are not big fans of that and want to skip out and not attend the event but it looks like that’s not going to stop Linda from dragging these two to have a fun time over at the fire house. And sadly, this isn’t going to be a reference to the ongoing anime called Fire Force. And no, this isn’t an endorsement for the show, Saturdays on Adult Swim.

Once the new day arrive with both Bob and Tina are out to the woods to partake in the Thundergirls cardboard boat race, Linda takes both Gene and Louise to the farmer’s market for unknown reasons unless you’re Linda and think that the kids aren’t in favor in visiting firehouses, well surprise kiddos, it looks like you’re NOT going to the farmer’s market and instead...

Yep. At the open house over at the local firehouse. In which both Gene and Louise aren’t too pleased over the fact that Linda lied to them about where they are going, thinking that they’re going to the farmer’s market only to end up taking them to a firehouse because Linda wants to go there but the kids don’t want to but of course, she’s the adult and she can override whatever the kids do, even if it means going to a firehouse. Pretty much the equivalent of going to the park only to ended up at the doctor’s appointment or thinking of going to the store only to end up at the bank. Either way, Gene and Louise aren’t having it but Linda tries to calm them down and say to them that they will enjoy whether they like it or not.

And...I don’t know if I want to feel sorry for both Louise and Gene about this when be a part of the whole thing at the firehouse with them putting on hats and stickers with Linda taking out her phone and taking pictures of them like it’s Christmas at the Mall and sitting on Santa’s lap and getting a picture. Oh yeah and during the visit, both Gene and Louise can’t have any fun from messing around with the equipment like the hoses from example to Gene asking that firefighter about the calendar shoot that firefighters usually do I guess by the end of the year, in which he is one of them being the cover for the month of April.

The tour continues upstairs over at the living quarters from seeing the kitchen where one of the members checking on some ribs in the oven to most members watching a movie in the small screen, guess from streaming like Netflix or Amazon Prime, so you could say that firefighters may be having the good life despite that you have to be ripped away from your home for like weeks but don’t forget, those people go through intense training and risk their lives to tackle fires in any place of town, so don’t say that being a firefighter isn’t an easy thing to do just because of what you’re seeing with what the firefighters are doing in their spare time...Gene.

Of course, the visit was already being downplayed mostly coming from Louise and Gene not wanting to be there but Linda not listening and not have it her way but it looks like the meter is getting even more downer by the moment when we see Louise and Gene in the car with Linda taking photos of the two, unphased of course, and come up with a firm realization that Linda is only doing this is mostly because she think that they’re little children, mostly seeing parents in the firehouse with literal little children in attendance, and need to do something to get out. Hell, even that firefighter want Linda out of the place and seeing what’s going on here with the visit, pinning towards the case of nostalgia and turning back the clock with her still thinking that Louise and Gene were like those other kids and yeah...Linda, think it’s time to live in the here and now because they’re growing up and yeah...they don’t want to be here. To the point where they want him to pretend to have an emergency but of course, firefighters aren’t allowed to do so. So...you’re now down to fate to come in and save you guys from the firehouse.

And it looks like fate has finally arrived for Louise and Gene when the fire alarm rang off meaning that they’re a fire going on, though Louise and Gene think that they’re going through with a pretend emergency, even though it’s an actual emergency. There’s an actual fire going on and they need to head out to take it out. That and consider the open house to be over with and asking for everyone, including the Belcher family to exit the premise as the firefighters get their gear and ready to roll out to tackle a fire. So that would be the end of the fire house visit and let’s hope they don’t get to do it again.

Then of course, to close out the episode, we get Linda, Louise, and Gene walking back home with Linda being upset over the visit being cut short even though it felt like an entire day and apologize to both Louise and Gene over dragging them to the fire house and that she only did it because she kind of missed the old days when the two were little and everything was a picture perfect family but Linda has to accept that these two are growing up, even though I think it’s one of the writers of the series saying that the characters in the show will never age and that coming from Comic Con if you follow along thanks to Twitter, and although that she want to stick to the past and want to be around  with her kids, it appears to be that the baby birds about ready to leave their nest and ready to become independent...even though Gene is only 11 and Louise being 9 but still. Oh yeah and we have a moment with Louise and Gene holding Linda’s hands on their way home, it was enjoyable. That is all we close out the episode with them along with Bob and Tina after the boat race arriving back at the restaurant and...noticing that nobody was in attendance and Bob questioning Linda why didn’t she and the kids watch over the restaurant, thus considering it a bye day because episode synopsis said so. At least there’s next week, so hang on to that for the family to make a quick buck or two to keep things afloat.

Reaction/Thoughts:

So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? I say it was an alright episode, not that bad but there’s some issues that I have to somewhat downplayed it but at least it’s better than last week’s episode which of course, not going to say it again like a broken record player, a pretty much flat episode.

Like I said earlier in the review, it’s been a massive while since we last have a Bob and Tina episode, even though this feels more in line of a Tina episode rather than both her and Bob, and I think it was nice to see it and maybe hope we can more of that if future episode because we rarely seen any episodes with these two because most of the times when it come to episodes with parent and child is either with Bob and Gene or Bob and Louise or Linda and Louise or Linda and Tina or all three with either one, you kind of wish we have more of that and that’s something where people would go all making summoning circles and drinking goat’s blood to make that a reality to be for the show. But yeah, it’s rare but hey, at least we got it, so take it or leave it folks.

Have some issues with the main plot of the episode, one being that it seems rather predictable to the point where you already know where this is going. Mostly with Troop 257 and with Karen. I mean, you can already sense that something is wrong here once the day of the boat race arrives. Mostly with the scene with Rena being stuck on top of a tree for unknown reasons, thinking that a squirrel stole her stash while at the same time, Troop 257 is switching Patty’s boat with one with a motor attached. And when Tina was given the green light to accuse 257 of switching Patty’s boat to Karen, you may have come up with the same idea as what Tina came up with in her hypothesis revolving around both Karen and 257 that she might be in cahoots and could be given them a possible cakewalk, yeah...predictable but at least 257 didn’t go all...how should I put this? It’s like what every football fan have been thinking for years since the start of the millennium...y’all think I was going to say the Patriots but uh...yeah, I think we all know where this is going. At least it’s not black magic and committing witchcraft, I mean they could but...don’t think they would do that.

So the main plot seems rather predictable but it’s not a bad main plot for the episode, it’s only episode three of the new season and even though the one from the season premiere seems like a total cakewalk, at least it’s better than last week’s. Last one, last one. Same goes for the subplot and although that it went by in a snap, it least it’s not a massive time waster and don’t forget that the whole firehouse visit subplot was teased whether if it’s over at Comic Con or in promos leading up to the current season, so at least it’s not too big for a disappointment. And of course, the whole thing with the kids starting to grow up with Linda trying to think that she’s living in the past during the whole firehouse visit, would say that it’s almost like with “The Grand Mama-pest Hotel” when Tina tells Linda that she want to switch rooms with Dillon, the girl who she just met during the trip, even though the whole trip with the seminar was going to be a girls’ weekend and hoping for her and Tina to bond over, may have some resemblance with that to this subplot with the firehouse visit though I maybe seeing more in the line of with the whole turkey incident back in Season 4 with Bob thinking that the turkey is Tina, throwing back to potty training, when being high in allergy pills. Mostly because of his allergies with cats due to Gayle’s visit but besides all that, it was an okay subplot despite going at a fast rate but it was something, so I have to give pointers somewhere with this episode.

So all and all, I think that this episode was an alright one. Do enjoy having an episode with Bob and Tina in play even though it really feels like it’s all about Tina, mostly with the Thundergirls in tow and with Troop 257 playing a part and of course, her dealing with Bob’s horrible tape skills even though she let pity take over during the building process, that’s pretty much strike one Tina. Pretty much strike one for this season. And the subplot seems alright, not a massive time waster but did gone by that fast in a blink of an eye, but it was an okay one, so at least there’s a silver lining for this week’s episode. So I’ll give “Motor, She Boat”...

...an 8 out of 10. A low end 8 out of 10 as the rating for this episode in my point. But of course, that’s my opinion and now I want to hear yours. Tell me what you think about this week’s episode? Do you like it? Do you hate it? Do you wish we have more episodes with Bob and Tina? Which Belcher parent and child episode do you like in the series? All that and more in the comment section down below.

Follow me for stuff from fandom stuff to anything in particular as it looks like we’re about to enter another election here in the states and of course, things really heating up in the sports world with MLB season getting a massive shakeup with at the time of this posting of the review, the Washington Nationals are in the World Series...yeah.
