So who’s ready for a puppet show…y-yeah. Starting off the month of March with a Louise that was good and we’re ending the month of March since we have no episode next week, with what appears to be a very decent episode. Huh…but hey, a well-known voice actor guest stars in the episode…so…silver lining. Anyway, in this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, Louise’s field trip to the marionette theater gets turned upside down where it went from being bored to death to getting with the owner’s bad side while Bob has to deal with a guy who’s been passing out fliers in front of his property in my spoilerific review of the eighteenth episode of season nine, titled “If You Love It So Much, Why Don’t You Marionette It?” And seriously, enough with the long titles Bouchard, pretty sure come a year from now when the fandom posts happen, Twitter better have at least going over the 280 mark and probably like…around 500. I don’t know.
So we began the month of March with a Louise episode with her being the principal for a day and now with this episode, wrapping up the month of March since unless you didn’t know, we return back on April 7, with another Louise episode. But unlike with “The Fresh Princ-ipal”, this was somewhat of a decent, yet an alright episode. Yeah, I have to give it a rewatch for reasons to getting through the lingo of this episode, mostly with the main plot of the episode with Louise and her deal with the owner of the marionette theater from being the newest member of the “Bored from watching a puppet show that pretty much became a dumpster fire” to ending up getting banned from the place for badmouthing. Seriously Louise, can you go to one place for one season without getting banned? It was decent, almost feels like we’re watching the subplot getting a promotion like it’s a backup quarterback…only to exceed expectations. It’s not that bad of a main plot, there are some jokes that made some people laugh, somewhat of a chuckle from yours truly, and of course, that little life lesson with the whole time going by and that you’ll grow out of everything you love, mostly with that owner, Esther, over that dragon puppet, might grow out you and lost interest, which was somewhat of a nice little life lesson, the problems comes with the pacing and somehow for some reason, the direction. So you might as well call it…whatever the kids are calling it these days…squiddly diddley.
While for the subplot, it’s not that bad, it was enjoyable mostly with Bob dealing with that guy trying to passing out fliers. And also taking over and showing off his skills out of nowhere like a pick out of the hat, or in this case, ass, to help the guy out while he had to head out to take care of his pet ferret. So you could say…the subplot somewhat is doing better than the main plot…no? That’s up to you to decide and of course, this episode gaining the rewatchability factor. Also Tom Kenny in the series as that flyer guy…huh. That was something alright.
So the episode begins with…Louise’s imagination with her Kuchi Kopi talking to one of her dolls, Dodomeki, in what appears to be in the swamp. As in the same swamp that was in Louise’s flu-like dream when both she and a deformed Kuchi Kopi travel down to the castle only to be stopped by both Bakeneko and later Akkoro Kamui. If you think that Louise fell sick again because that setting over that and the two toys would giving you some serious déjà vu from Season 7, well…nope, that’s all Louise playing like what a normal nine year old would do to pass the time play with her imagination. Her imagination hour got cut short when Tina comes in and tells Louise that her breakfast is ready.
The kids are getting ready to head out for a field trip over at the marionette theater, which it looks like this might be Louise’s first time to visit the place with Linda being enthusiastic over Louise going to the place and with both Tina and Gene on her side. But…it looks like both Tina and Gene have other ideas when it comes to how their experience came into play. Let’s just say…
Yeah…it pretty much suck balls because for Tina and Gene, that was pure torture. And not the type you would see, or hear, with the whole waterboarding and what not, more of you’re totally regretting doing the whole viewing and not fall in line in the whole “man, that movie sucked” because you want to see the thing but your friend say, “No man, I don’t think that’s a good plan. I watched it and pretty sure I lost my hour and a half over being bored to death. Like you not noticing that it was gonna suck and taking the cardinal sin in the entertainment industry because what’s the purpose of entertainment? To entertain you. That marionette show that both Tina and Gene saw in the past pretty much bored the hell out of them. Linda tries to get Bob to be on her side and make both Tina and Gene eat their own words when it comes to the performance, but even Bob has to agree with the two and say that it was a total snoozefest. So wow, three of the five Belcher now agree that the whole marionette show was nothing more than a snoozefest enough hoping to be run over by a nearby truck. But of course, Louise would still want to see what the hubbub is all about and that’s where the next scene comes into play.
As everyone arrives at the front of the marionette theater as Frond tells the students, who are new to the “experience”, what to expect from the place that they are about to enter: Watch over a puppet show, Break some students into groups and make their own puppets, and perform their own puppet show in front of everyone. Sort of like if you’re in your literature class, English here in the states, after watching a movie or reading a book, you would be a part of a group, through the instructor, and must come up with your own version or something like that and must perform in front of everyone in the classroom…without of course, fucking things up. As everyone is about to enter the place, we got Jimmy Jr saying to Zeke that he’s going to endure the boredom that he and the rest of the students had to endure again and Louise reply to Jimmy Jr and say that it’s nothing than a mere puppet show, how bad can one show be? Oh…wait for it Louise. Wait for it. That’s the expression of an innocent individual not noticing what is about to go down once going inside the place. About to subvert expectations and about to crush her world and expectations of a good show would go down like a building going down on demolition day. You think that you’re gonna get a good puppet show coming from the theater but looking at the look of their faces of the people who went there before, mostly coming from people like with Tina, Gene, Bob, Jimmy Jr, anyone who isn’t named Linda or Mr. Frond, it’s like they don’t even want to be there. I mean, just be thankful that this isn’t like a mandatory thing and make people go without saying no as an answer, unless you’re sick for a day, and have to endure the so-called torture coming from the puppet show. So with Louise here before entering the place, she wants to see what’s the whoopla is all about and why everyone got bored the shit out of it and see if it’s nothing more than…I don’t know, whining. Once we cut to the next scene with the puppet show already in progress…
Yep…Louise has now joined the “Bored of this puppet show bullshit” club when she and everyone watch over the show and talking about stamps. Stamps…of all the topics that the marionette theater has to talk about…and it’s stamps and the importance of stamps through the mail. Last I checked, it’s 2019 and we have e-mail now, oh wow, our postal service is dying in the hands of technology, unless it’s through delivering packages, not in like…1947 and think that kids like to play with stamps. Oh and it looks like an old face is a part of the theater trope in the form of Ron. Yep, Ron…one of the two health inspectors, is a member of the theater troupe. Don’t know if this job is considered either a part time job and that his health inspecting job with Hugo would be scheduled for this episode and this episode only or maybe he does so by volunteering. Not for like credit or anything like, more in line of wanting to give back to the community and don’t want to spend time doing nothing to do and the marionette theater is the first place to help out with. So yeah, Ron’s a member of the troupe and Louise…now bored of the whole experience as the trip continues. And this is only the first hour for what could be a very long field trip for the young Belcher child.
After suffering through a boring ass puppet show, the kids are now at their second activity of the day in the form of making their own puppets, well…more of placing stickers on the thing. It’s like taking an art class and you’re finally at the point of the semester where you have to make something out of clay…only the object that was made with clay was already made and you have to paint it and decorate it for the finishing touches. So no puppet making. No putting the puppet piece by piece. No adding the strings to create the movement. Just have the puppets and a pair of stickers on standby to the students to pass the time. Kind of sucking the creativity out of the whole thing for everyone. So Louise begins to somehow hating the whole concept, and probably the whole thing, since the puppet show earlier in the episode that made her change her mind about the whole thing with the puppets and the theater and made her being bored over the whole thing to the point of her scolding. And one of the members, Esther, noticed that Louise is not happy and have Ron to handle the situation and help Louise to put the stickers on the blank puppet. Of course, being annoyed over the whole, Louise decided to head out to use the bathroom to at least get some peace and quiet and just as she was heading towards the bathroom, and don’t know if she’s going to make a b-line towards the exit or not, probably the first answer…
Louise spotted something in a room that it’s door was open, revealing to be a dragon that it looks like it hasn’t been used in like a massive while. Louise looks in awe over the whole thing and she would like touch it or in the case of her, probably take it, until she got spotted by Ron and closed the door and telling that she should not be in that room, meaning that the room where the dragon is at is strictly off-limits, and of course, Esther comes in and tells Louise that the room is off limits and think that with Louise isn’t too keen with the whole puppet workshop experience, she decided to take her to another room and to be a voluntary supervising producer to one of the producers, well…only producer in the whole place, named Dot, who eats weird stuff like what she’s currently eating in the form of dried fish skins, and stinking up the place. Which…yeah…something tells me girl needs some help. Because when you work for a cranky old woman that pretty much passed her prime and eat weird stuff like dried fish skins, which I think there has to be some country out there that eating dried fish skins is considered a delicacy, yeah…girl may need to see some counseling. And for Louise, it’s like every time she runs her big mouth, things aren’t looking good for her whether if it’s getting her ears stolen by Logan, being left alone along with Tina, Gene, Andy, Ollie, and Darryl in the fort by Millie, or getting on that juice truck lady’s nerves that resulted in her bike getting ran over and completely destroyed. And now, to here, as a supervising producer to Dot after getting on Esther’s nerves. And this is only round one.
Dot gives Louise what’s up when it comes to what she do and the tools used for the show that she saw earlier as we switch over to both Tina and Gene for a bit and worry about the whereabouts of Louise, only for Ron to step in and tell the two eldest Belcher children that Louise has been sent to the booth with Dot and if you think that either Tina or Gene or both might step in and help their sister out…well…yeah, looks like they rather not step in and making things worse for Louise and would rather not getting them into trouble and ruin the trip for them, even though they were bored as fuck since their first experience. Talk about cowering your way out of a situation that your younger sister has to go through. Don’t go crying to her when you two have to deal with your problems.
Switching back to Louise and Dot in the tech booth with Dot showcasing Louise her “tunes” that she made on her phone, Louise asks her about the dragon puppet that she found in the room before being sent away to where we are in the tech room by Esther. Dot answers Louise’s questions about the dragon like that the puppet’s name is Vladikus and that Esther was pretty much a natural when it comes to Vladikus and using the dragon for her shows back in the day but then out of nowhere, she stopped using him. Of course, we’ll get to that later on this review in this episode.
Moments later after that little interaction between both Louise and Dot, Louise decided to do something to pass the time in making her own puppet in the likes of Vladikus, well…more of cheap rip-off, or rather a bootleg to avoid being accused of copying without permission as the rest of the students were handed over scripts for their puppets, only to find out coming from Rudy and later Jimmy Jr that the scripts that they received was already made, meaning that originally, you would like make your own script and let the imagination take over but it looks like it was already made in advance. And of course, it’s the fill in the blank type for the name of the puppets in the form of something you see in a mad lib book. So it’s pretty much letting your imagination run wild…only with regulations taking over the way you imagine things. Wow, no wonder conservatives are pissy over the whole regulations is ruining lives.
Louise made it out from the booth to rejoin with both Tina and Gene with her own puppet only to be spotted by Esther, who sees the puppet that she saw and made and begins to put up the pieces of where Louise gets the idea of how she made her very own puppet. In which Louise said that she got some ideas and was influenced from Vladikus, the dragon that was locked up in a dark room. Even though it almost sounds like you’re accusing Louise of stealing the dragon. I mean, stealing the dragon from the room, yeah…I think she would do that but stealing ideas and making it her own, she wouldn’t go that far down hill to do all that. Louise isn’t the type of person who would steal ideas and make it like it’s hers. She’s a smart kid, she come up with ideas that is completely original whether if it’s for good or for bad reasons. But she would never ever do the idea of stealing ideas and making it like it’s hers.
And then we get more badmouthing courtesy of Louise when she snaps, telling Esther on what’s her deal with Louise, and not because of the whole experience being downplayed by the whole boredom-palooza…yeah, I think it’s mostly because of that. Anyway, Louise is probably making the situation even worse when Esther thinks that Louise is the problem that’s been going for like the whole day, in which Louise barks back and said that she’s not her only problem since she had to deal with a lot of people who doesn’t want to be in this place and even questions what kind of place does the same show for over the lifespan of thirty years. Over three decades of doing this shit. Of course, the others weighing in to put in Broadway shows like Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, and Cats as an example of shows that been around for like a really long time. Hamilton, we’re looking at you, see y’all on the list in about…2045? If the planet still exist and not be affected by climate change.
However, the whole Louise badmouthing thing made things even worse for her and finally gotten onto Esther’s nerves and go all, “Oh? You don’t like this? Okay, wish granted. You’re banned from ever coming back.” Meaning that for the second time this season, Louise gets banned from a place with the first being Family Funtime, which…yeah, the ban is still is place for her, and now in the marionette theater. One season! Can you do one season without getting banned?! That’s two places that Louise has been banned in this season alone. At this rate, pretty sure that number is gonna rise to like three, maybe four come the end of the season. And even like doing the right then like playing Fischoeder like a fiddle when trying to get the dune buggy for her, Gene, Tina, Zeke, Jimmy Jr, Andy, Ollie, and Darryl but got that giant ass plush elephant with roller skates that Fischoeder wanted as a consolation prize, she is still banned. In which Louise is stated, being hopping mad, that she can’t be banned because this is a field trip and you can’t be banned when you’re in a field trip. But Mr. Frond steps in and replies to Louise that technically, you CAN get banned while you’re in a field trip as Louise has now been banished to the bus with LaBonz while everyone is back to what they are doing, puppets and scripts and stuff. And if you think that either Tina or Gene or both would step in and defend their siste…nope, cowering out and would not get in trouble and get the same fate as her. So uh…don’t expect to wake up tomorrow morning in a rat infested subway in New York City.
So Louise ends up at the empty but with LaBonz to pass the time before everyone comes back from the theater as we switch back to both Gene and Tina, acting like total cowards, wanting to see Louise and how she’s doing but can’t because if they want to see her, they have to get pass both Esther and Mr. Frond. And that’s where Ron comes into play and decided to sneak them out by carrying a backdrop of a Christmas village with both Gene and Tina behind the thing, hoping to not be spotted, and lies to Esther that he saw a spider crawling around and has to take it out. And of course, she bought it as both Gene and Tina exit out to the bus where Louise is at as the two finally arrive at the bus and not hoping for LaBonz to see what’s going on to see her escaping the bus, who is currently occupied in playing her little app game on the phone, slowly killing her phone battery life, when trying to sneak out of the bus, in which she did of course, leaving her shoes behind on the bus and going back to the place barefooted.
Back at the marionette theater, Louise, Tina, and Gene arrive at the door where Vladikus is at and decided to pull it out from the room, even though according to Tina because there’s a sign at the door, would deem as a really bad idea but Louise ignores the warning and with both Frond and Esther busy with the other kids doing their time in performing their puppet show, Louise heads down to the tech booth where Dot is at and asks her to do a new cue, using one of tones that she created as the background music as both Tina and Gene are up to do their show with Esther filling in for Louise due to her banishment and just as the three begin to do their own show, following the script and whatnot, we have fog beginning to come out from fog machines and one of the tracks from Dot’s phone playing in the background comes Louise holding on to secret weapon on her hand…
Vladikus. Esther’s old puppet that she locked away in a dark room that may or not be a storage room. Esther looks rather surprised that she saw her own puppet outside of the room and being held in the hands of Louise as it looks like she is now being challenged to a puppet fight…we have ourselves a puppet fight. An actual puppet fight. And not like in the form of an underground illegal puppet battle where you have to gamble to see who’s puppet is gonna get their shit wrecked like a boat crashing through an iceberg and catches on fire in an example of watching the goddamn derby race.
So yeah, we have ourselves a puppet battle between both Esther and Louise with Esther holding on to a blank puppet and with Louise holding on to Vladikus, the puppet dragon that Esther threw away and locked up in a dark room, and rather than having ourselves a somewhat of an epic puppet battle where the two puppets fight it out like…with Naruto in the fight between Sasori and both Sakura and Chiyo when Chiyo brought out her ace up her sleeve in 10 puppets and Sasori decided to one up her and bring out 100 as an advantage…only to fall apart. It’s not like that but how awesome would that be?
But no, it turns into a therapy session as both Louise and Esther are about to “duke” it out, in comes the truth bombs being dropped when Louise go all 20 questions on Esther for the reason she locked away Vladikus and has not been in like commission since like either the Carter or Reagan administration. In which that Esther said that Louise wouldn’t understand what happened when that faithful day happened, but Louise still wants to know the reason why. The real reason why she had to lock away the puppet that she made. It’s mostly because of time. And if you think that this seems nothing more than a cop out, well…it doesn’t. It’s on to the point of she was in her prime but then father time decided to catch up to her and say that the imagination shop in Esther’s perspective has it’s fun and now decided to close up shop for good. To the point to where we are now with Esther thinks that kids nowadays like stamps, even though…again, it’s 2019. Not 1947. And of course, the puppets decided to stop talking to her with Louise responding that this is what happened if your imagination decided to pull the lever, people putting away their puppets and kids just put away their toys for good because let’s face it, time is not on everyone’s side. You have to enjoy it while you can because once time finally catches up to you, once you grow old, it’s like your mind is telling you that “Hey, it’s been fun and all that on what you’re doing with your toys and your imagination, but…it’s time to start letting it all go and cut the rope. It’s hard but…yeah.” It’s like coming from the beginning of Toy Story 3 with Andy, seeing him from a young kid to him as a teen into an adult ready to head out to college if you know what I’m talking about. And…it’s tough. It’s tough to let go of whatever childhood you have when it comes to the imagination department. Because something tells me that’s going to be Louise later on in her life and it’s gonna sting her to the core once that happens. I really don’t want to imagine that being a reality. But of course, Louise stated that locking your imagination up and locking away your favorite thing in like your entire life doesn’t have to be that way as Louise handed Vladikus back into the hands of Esther and she feels happy about this little reunion and apologizing over locking him up for three decades. Almost on the verge of tears during that little encounter as Louise asks Dot to crank up the fog machine with more fog as the show continues on…only for Esther to collapse in a sea of artificial fog covering up the entire room like smoking coming out from a burning oven in the kitchen. Should’ve gone easy with the machine, Louise.
Made it outside of the theater with Esther being taken on a stretcher and about to head out to the hospital as she is being treated with four broken ribs following that collapse and Dot apologizing for going overboard with the fog machine. Just as Esther is about to exit stage left on her way to a hospital via ambulance, Louise decided to give Vladikus to her for the ride there and thinks that the puppet has winked at her. Don’t know if that’s her imagination deciding to open up from the box that was locked up…yeah, you could say that her imagination is about to open up the floodgates and ready to be released but it’s mostly from the drugs to ease the pain from her aching body as she exits out and for the students to head back to the bus from the theater. And as for Louise…
Decided to take her own self made puppet of the bootleg Vladikus home and use it to play with it along with her toys, mostly with her Kuchi Kopi as we close out the main plot of the episode. At first, I thought that the main plot of the episode, like with the puppet show earlier in the plot, was going nowhere, not in the verge of being bored, god forbid that would ever happen, more of in line of it going nowhere. Mostly with Louise and how the situation has played out, but through rewatching the episode to get a second and better look, this was considered an alright main plot. Coming from both that little life lesson on the whole thing with imagination and how we, as people, learn that imagination pretty much have a time limit and that once time catches up to you and once reaching around your adult life, teenage life, or whatever, you begin to lose interest and put it away for good. That and of course, some jokes there and there. Of course, there’s somewhat of an issue with the direction and possibly the pacing of the plot, mostly from after the beginning of the plot with Louise and her imagination and that little puppet fight/therapy scene…yeah, I feel like in between those scenes, kind of went a bit too fast, a bit, not a lot. A bit. And also feeling a bit lost when first seeing it but after watching it again, do have to get the concept of this plot building in. So sum it all up in this main plot, it was alright through if you feel lost with this plot of the episode, then rewatch and at least pay attention.
Now the subplot of the episode…it was not that bad when it comes to Bob has to deal with a guy who’s been passing out fliers outside of the restaurant. Thinking that the direction of the episode would’ve as well follow the same with main plot, but it looks like it doesn’t in my liking. So there’s that. Bob has to deal with a guy who’s been passing out fliers to what appears to be an RSVP to a rave. Not in the case of the Fyre Festival…good god, no. That was a total dumpster fire right there, got people’s money like it’s some sort of cruel, sick joke once finding out that it was nothing all but a sham. Almost feels like Dashcon back in 2014 for Tumblr users. Well I didn’t go cause one, I was in high school at the time, shocker. Also it was in Illinois, so…no money to go to that…which…thank god I didn’t because that would’ve be a turn for the worse.
Anyway, Bob tells the guy who has been passing out fliers to random people passing through to find another spot to handing out the fliers but the guy who is responsible for passing the papers out said that he can’t. And the reason stated that his boss made him do it. As in the restaurant is pretty much his assigned post and can’t leave this assigned post, otherwise his boss would fire him and would not get paid. And it’s not because he needed the money for x, y, and z reasons whatsoever but more in the line of dude has to pay for his pet’s medical bills. Which of course, health care here in the states…yeah, it’s pretty much shit. It’s pretty much shit compared to like Canada or Norway or Sweden where they have universal healthcare. Come on people! Oh and the pet the guy is talking about…it’s a ferret. A pet ferret. I don’t know if it’s legal to have a wild animal like a ferret to be your pet. I mean, the closest the Belcher family would have as a pet is possibly a raccoon eating out of the trash in the alleyway, who Linda deemed as Little King Trashmouth, and this guy have a pet ferret who just got out of the vet and has to pay the vet off for treatment. There has to be some states here in the United States where you can legally have a ferret as a pet. I mean fuck, in the State of Washington…
Lollipops are banned in that state. Like what the fuck man? What the actual fuck?! We’re pretty much the kings (and queens) of countries that have weird ass laws. So there has to be some states where having a ferret as a pet is legal. Oh yeah, and Tom Kenny is voicing the flyer guy in this episode…neat.
Speaking of flyer guy, yeah…he’s still there in front of the restaurant but his passing out fliers gig gets somewhat interrupted with him screaming in agony over what’s going with his pet ferret. Finding out that his ferret is about to die because his roommate don’t want to put the medicine in the…uh…rectum…in which she felt uncomfortable when trying to save the animal. And would leave and check up on the ferret but can’t due to the fact that if he does leave, then he won’t get paid. And also don’t want to get to his boss’s bad side enough to get fired. So now, because it’s an emergency, he wants Bob to take over his place by pretending to be him as he heads off to his ferret and it looks like Bob has not been given a choice and fill in until the situation is cleared out. So Bob passing out fliers that isn’t advertising the restaurant…this should be fun to watch over. And by fun, I mean where thing go horribly wrong and you know, usual sitcom stuff. Only this time around, wearing a colorful weave hat and a…I hope that’s fake fur and not a real one of a vest. Pretty sure animal rights groups are going to grow a hissy fit over…well, pretty much everything in this show. No animals were harmed in the making of this show.
We head later on in the day with Bob having trouble trying to passing out fliers to random strangers in the getup when Linda comes out of the restaurant and asks him that he shouldn’t even doing this. Helping in and filling in for that guy who went away to deal with a ferret emergency and rather than like Linda saying to Bob, “Hey, you should probably come back to the restaurant. You don’t have to do this.” With Bob replying, “But I got to help this guy by filling in for him and not wanting him to be fired by boss.” No, instead of that, Linda decided to help Bob a bit by demonstrating a little technique to get random people passing by a flyer to that rave in the form of flicking. Flick the flyer like flicking away a booger…in which Linda used to do…in the bed…and by the radiator. The goddamn radiator. And you could thank Linda’s mom, Gloria, for teaching Linda that. Okay…why? Bed…maybe…mostly from…no…no. That sound disgusting. That sound disgusting. Louise almost tried that with the boogers when trying to scare away Rudy in “Bob Actually”, that didn’t work thanks to Rudy staring at her eyes and her nails and saying that gender stereotypes are bullshit…let me have my moment, alright. Linda shows off her flicking skills, in which Bob begins to follow Linda’s instructions when seeing a random person walking pass and Bob does the flicking. He passed a flyer to a random person. And not just one person…try more. More and more as Bob keeps on flicking like a natural like if you have hidden skills when it comes to things like pitching a ball during practice for an upcoming baseball game, topical since it’s late March and baseball season here in the states is about to kick off, and you learn a little life hack coming from either your friend or a loved one and then badda bing, badda boom, skills. That’s pretty much Bob after learning about the flicking skills coming from Linda and…well thank her, Bob. Linda I mean…and also Gloria. So thank your mother-in-law the next time she and Al gets to visit the family. And don’t even think about hiding away in the crawl space next time around.
But of course, Bob’s little fun time with the fliers comes to an abrupt end when Bob continues on and on passing out fliers like a pro and Linda finally say that if Bob should like come back to the restaurant but Bob said that he’s worried that the guy’s, I’mma call him Ferret Joe to play it keeps, Ferret Joe’s boss to check up on him and see if all the fliers are gone and passed out to everyone as of course, Jimmy Pesto decided to torment Bob with the fliers with his so-called zingers and have Trev along for ride and of course, high fives him even though last week, didn’t. Oh reset button, what will we do without you being the bane of continuity? Linda defends Bob from Jimmy Pesto’s zingers and Bob told Jimmy off and think that he’s the best flyer he is when passing the fliers out. Actually Bob, you’re not the best flyer there is. That title goes to…
Gritty, the mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers. And as of this posting of the review, yeah, I think Philadelphia is out of making it back to the Stanley Cup playoffs come April…don’t kill me, Philly. And Bob’s little ego to prove Jimmy Pesto wrong cost Bob the fliers when the pieces of paper now got slipped away, thus ending his tenure as a substitute flier passer. That and probably broke some laws that involves littering. Ha-ha…oh, Ferret Joe is gonna get fired thanks to Bob.
Speaking of Ferret Joe, yeah, he’s back at the restaurant and noticing that Bob is back inside and has no fliers on his hands and explain that there was a little mishap that happened…mostly with Bob trying to fend off against Jimmy Pesto which made him lose focus and cause the flies to be let go to the air and on the ground. Which upsets Ferret Joe, even upsets him more is his boss coming in and asks him why isn’t he in his assigned post, in which both Bob and Linda go and defend Ferret Joe by lying to the boss that he did pass out all of the fliers, which was nice…to some liking, not in a way of some sort of cop out, but mostly because they feel bad for the guy because he had to deal with a lot of shit with the sick ferret and him getting fired would make things even worse for him. So Bob and Linda lying to the boss to think that he passed out all of the fliers and pretend that mishap with Bob didn’t even happen to save his ass. So the boss was relieved that Ferret Joe passed out all of the fliers and ask to do same tomorrow but Bob has other ideas when it comes to the location and propose that he should do his fliers business in front of the business across the street, i.e. Jimmy Pesto’s as a way to getting back at him to close out the subplot of the episode. So the subplot, like I said earlier in the review, it wasn’t that bad. Thought that would follow along with the main plot when it comes the direction it was headed but…okay, there were some flaws in the way, like one or two, that’s about it, but the subplot seems to an enjoyable one and it’s not because of Tommy boy here in the show, being Tom Kenny because it’s Tom freaking Kenny, okay it’s that but also coming from the ending of the subplot when both Bob and Linda save Ferret Joe’s job from getting the axe following that little mishap thanks to Bob, which again, was nice for them to do that to wrap up the subplot and not have it in like the form of a cop out. So there’s that.
Reaction/Thoughts:
So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers. This was an alright episode but it does have nice little life lesson coming from the main plot when it comes to the topic of imagination and having Louise as the center of the focus, second time in a month since her time as principal for a day. I know that this season is pretty much have almost every other episode but you have to get some credit to some episodes where the kids are the ones being in the spotlight and it looks like this episode might be one of those ones that deserve the credit.
While yes, I have some problems with the direction and possibly the pacing of the episode, mostly coming from the main plot in between the beginning of the episode to the whole puppet battle/therapy session scene. Because it feels like it was going a bit too fast with the whole thing with Louise getting on Esther’s nerves since her view on the marionette show on her first visit gone a complete 180 before the field trip began.
If there’s anything that the show has not disappoint when it comes to the topic of the episode, mostly with the main plot and that puppet show and whatnot, comes in the form of imagination and the reason why Esther locked away Vladikus for like almost 30 years. You’re somewhat getting vibes from “Hawk & Chick” with the reunion with both Yuki and Koji and of course, the thing with both Bob and Louise with Louise talking about a father and it’s child not talking for almost three decades and Bob thinking that it won’t happen to them come three decades from now. It’s like with this episode when Esther revealed that the reason she locked up Vladikus is because of she grown out of it, mostly because of time, and Louise thinks that people putting away their puppets, people referring to Esther putting away Vladikus, is the same to kids putting away their toys and think that their time is gonna come when it comes to the topic of imagination. Almost to the point of Louise is going to have to deal with this in the future once she grows up but said that it doesn’t have to be that way and handed Vladikus back to Esther and thus, her imagination box begins to somewhat open again once reunited with the puppet. That’s something I like from this episode and the show does not disappoint when it comes to the life lessons.
Louise…two places in one season where she gets banned from a place around the town…for the love…of dear Christ…one season without getting banned. I know she’s nine and all that but…this is like the fourth time, maybe fifth, that her big mouth ends up making the situation even worse…I don’t know man. I don’t know. I know that you think you’re all high and mighty but…please don’t make things for yourself. And here’s another thing…Tina and Gene…how? How didn’t you go and defend your sister in a situation like this one? Like…you could say that’s more of it’s Louise and girl can like deal a situation in a snap without their help but…at least defend her for once. And instead…they rather not get themselves to deal with the same fate as their young sister and sit this one out. Once…twice…three times with her getting banned from ever coming back to the place and they didn’t do anything to at least apologize in the behalf of Louise. Like what the hell was that all about?
The subplot of the episode, like I said and won’t be saying it again at any given time, was an interesting one to be honest, mostly because of three things that somewhat gave a liking in my taste. First being of course, Tom Kenny…you can recognize that voice from any series you watch, in the world of animation of course, and having him in the show, even if it’s for one episode, was pretty much incredible for the casting department to have him since he is well known and having him on is not easy along with highly paid actors do to voiceovers, having him on the show and as the character of Ferret Joe…did a good job playing the role and let’s hope he can return for another go. Possibly as another character.
Second being Bob acting like a natural coming from Linda and you could possibly thank her…and her mother…for all that and you could say that this is Bob being Bob but you do have to give him some credit for helping Ferret Joe out so there’s that…until his squabble with Jimmy Pesto pretty much went downhill…for Bob, not the plot.
And then the third, Bob and Linda saving Ferret Joe’s ass by lying to his boss following the mishap that caused Bob to lose all the fliers from the grips of his hands. Again, it was nice and wasn’t a total cop out. Mostly because they feel sorry for the guy because he has to take the job because he has to pay for the medical bills for his pet ferret and has to leave Bob to do his job to deal with a ferret emergency and him not being paid and possibly getting fired would be the last thing he would want to deal with so having Bob and Linda to step in and lie to the boss to ease his worries and kept his job. So again, it was nice to close out the subplot. Not saying that the subplot is better than the main plot. Is just that this subplot was enjoyable in my liking for this episode. There were some points in the subplot that must’ve gained my liking, three to be exact, and I have stated my case for that subplot. But of course, the devil is in the details and that’s up to you in your opinion as I stated mine with this episode.
So all and all, I think this episode, despite that there was a problem with the direction and possibly the pacing coming from the main plot, was an alright episode despite being given the rewatchability factor. Do enjoy that little life lesson they threw out when it comes to the topic of imagination, really do like that. And of course, subplot of the episode…let’s just say in one simple word so I don’t want to sound like a broken record, wild. So I’ll give “If You Love It So Much, Why Don’t You Marionette It?”…
…an 8 out of 10. A low-end to be exact. Just to play it safe…I think next season, I might be ending up doing it out of 5 but that would be damage control coming from that. So…yeah. So no new episode this upcoming weekend so tune in on April 7 when Bob decided to help out someone from the radio business who happens to be making a comeback while Linda makes pies out of sweet potato in the nineteenth episode of season nine, “Long Time Listener, First Time Bob”.
