Well this is gonna be an interesting Spring season as we now finally made it at the halfway point of the season and nothing says kicking off said season, despite that it’s freaking cold and wet as balls around the country, like having everyone’s favorite bunny hatted child in charge of the school, this should fun in this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers where Louise becomes principal of the school for a day and turning the school upside down when she took office while Bob deals with a little road block when unable to flip burgers in my spoilerific review of the Fifteenth Episode of the Ninth Season, “The Fresh Princ-ipal”.
You know what? Just gonna come out and say it, I really enjoyed it. No bullshitting around coming from me. This was a good episode. Sure, there were some flaws along the way of the episode in within both plots, but it was enjoyable to watch over. Mostly with the main plot of the episode making this episode a good one.
You have Louise becoming the principal for a day and if you think that her taking control of the highest office in the schoolgrounds would create a total anarchy and would probably burn the school down with her own hands, at least, that what Frond was thinking once seeing her demands coming into play, it gave the students some pleasure and some freedom that the school wouldn’t do and even later on in the episode when using her powers for good when saving Frond from getting the boot, that was something. It was nice.
And the subplot, it was decent but somewhat enjoyable. Although the beginning started a little slow…wait no, try putting the turtle on the ground from it’s container and let it walk, that pretty much sums up the beginning of the subplot but come later on throughout the episode, it gets somewhat interesting, more of enjoyable. Did get a few laughs from it with the whole Bob trying to get his groove back with flipping patties. So there’s that. On to the review.
Last episode was Tina’s big day with her theme for the prom being picked and asking Jimmy Jr to be her date was gonna be the icing in the cake only for the Animation Gods to take a massive dump by not having Jimmy Jr accepting her offer and yadda, yadda, yadda. That’s not gonna work this time around for Louise as she is now getting ready for her day of being principal for the day. In which she won through a contest of who can sell the most chocolate bars by going through a lot of places from the movie theater to the restaurant to even over at a stadium, pretending to be one of those people who sell snacks by the stairsteps while you’re sitting on your seat when watching a sporting event. Louise has been popping out of nowhere around the town like seeing a magician carrying a box of chocolate when trying to help their child out with the fundraiser from any place whether if it's at a Mall, a Park, or even over at a Church, now you see him, buy shit, and now you don’t.
But of course, there’s a sole reason why Louise want to take control of the principal office when wanting to win the contest and of course, won the contest, is to get to the cabinet of confiscation where stuff like comic books, fake vomit, fireworks, all that stuff locked up in one huge cabinet and Louise wants to step in and see it in her own eyes…and of course, use it for her own mischievous reasons but of course, Bob said the Louise before she heads out that maybe she’ll use her powers of the principal by doing something good. Help someone out like let’s say if someone you know is about to get the boot. You could say that Louise would probably not gonna follow through what Bob is saying but knowing Louise…let’s just say…
Just follow along, peoples. Just follow along. Louise arrives at the principal office so she can begin her time as the big cheese for a day. Telling Ms. Schnur to get everything ready for what could be the longest day in the school’s history. But of course, the door to the principal’s office is locked and Louise is unable to open it. That’s where Frond step into the office, telling Louise about what being principal for a day really means. Thinking more of line of being a ceremonial role like surviving the raising of the flag, watering the school plant, phone in the school’s attendance, all of that. Which…that doesn’t sound like being the principal. That’s more of line of being an assistant, rather an intern for the principal.
Which speaking of the principal, where the hell is Principal Spoors? Most importantly, when is Principal Spoors decide to show up? Like no, really. Where and when? Because when he was mentioned back in “The Runway Club” back in 2015, well first brought up in “Broadcast Wagstaff School News”, and by the end of the episode after the kids won their fashion contest to get an early release for the cotton candy festival, we didn’t get a face. All we get is legs. That’s it. And if you’re hoping for Spoors to pop up in this episode? Well, hate to break it to you, you ain’t getting it. It’s the same with “I Bob Your Pardon” earlier in the season when you’re hoping for the mayor to pop up, only to reveal that he’s off somewhere and leave the deputy mayor in charge of the turkey pardon. Would say go to Loren Bouchard over at Twitter and say when are we gonna see Spoors or the Mayor in the series, but I’ll doubt that he’s gonna say movie. I feel like that’s only answer to any questions from the fans. Either that or uses it as an excuse. Either way, please pop up.
It’s not even a full day for Louise and it’s only 9:15 after finishing the duties that Frond stated on what principal for the day was all about, but that’s not gonna stop Louise from having her day being shatted on as she now going to picklock the door to gain entry to the office. Of course, she has to get pass Ms. Schnur first in order to get into the office. Which…for Louise, it’s easy to do when distracting the assistant to the principal about her daily life and lo and behold, she finally got into the office and about to make a b-line towards the cabinet…until she gets caught up Schnur and she would rip Louise away from the office…until she saw the private bathroom and decided to give Louise the green light to unlimited power. This should be fun to gloss over.
And so it begins, the Louise Belcher Administration as Louise places her orders on the bulletin board and give the forms to each and every student and teacher within the mile or two radius and it looks like everyone seems to be enjoying what Louise is doing and deliver what they want like with a campaign promise that you won’t turn your back on and sell out to big corporations and the Washington bubble. #Bernie2020. Everyone seems to enjoy it except for Mr. Frond, who he thinks that what Louise is doing is complete anarchy and thinks that with her taking over the wheel would probably be more in cline of…think of somebody buying a company and thinks that that company is gonna go well under his or her control only for that company to tank really hard. How hard? Crashing through a brick house after skidding off the road and not noticing that there’s still ice on the road after it was melted away. Oh and the car catches on fire and you don’t have insurance. And of course, with Louise taking charge, Frond isn’t gonna let this one slide and now probably has to get Louise out of power.
Dude, I know you’re all law and order with the school…who died and made you deputy principal? Just because you’re the first to be introduced in the series doesn’t mean that whenever the principal decide to leave to a meeting or something, doesn’t mean that you get total control. That power goes to the vice principal, which…okay seriously, what happened to the vice principal? Who’s the vice principal? You can’t leave us hanging like that?
And Mr. Frond does so of the whole removing Louise out of power thing when he sees Louise on the phone while trying to open up the lock of the cabinet and she tries to reason with Frond and even offer him a lollipop but of course, despite taking the lollipop and tastes the lime rather that the sour apple that he want to taste, decided to take Louise of the office and even spotted Ms. Schnur coming out from Spoors’ bathroom. But if you think that Frond pulling Louise of office would abruptly end her tenure for the day? Well, looks like that’s not gonna stop Louise as she now took control of the microphone from the announcements and doing even more demands including from both Tina and Gene, sensual reggae dancing for Tina and wacky hat day for Gene. Tina alerts Louise that Frond is marching his way towards where she’s at and Louise decided to pass the time to distract Frond by manipulate some of the students in Frond’s path that he’s hiding money in his shoes, thus putting a pause on Frond from reaching towards Louise as the so-called mishap now takes place.
Tina and Gene’s demands aren’t the only things that plays a role in the whole change process into the school from having the teachers speak in an Italian accent, which intrigued Jimmy Jr. Passing notes without getting caught got Zeke’s attention. And even lifting the ban of chewing gum in class, in which got Jocelyn a breath of fresh air. Which, by the way, Bouchard…um…girl needs more screen time. Give her some screen time.
We then switch over to the school news with Tammy looking like she’s gonna interview with Louise with all the things that she have done to change things around and have Jocelyn interview everyone in the school from the students to the teachers about the things Louise is doing when it comes to the changes that she’s been doing to the school and it looks like they seem to enjoy it. So apparently, Louise being the principal, despite that Frond acted a bit overreacted with her taking the office, thinking that with her in power would like burn the school ground via anarchy, but it looks like coming from the entire school, it looks having Louise in charge, for a day, seems to improve everyone in both the educational and mental and physical sector form. So to put this out there…Louise would’ve been a better principal than Spoors. I know. I know, child labor laws, having a child taking the job of principal is pretty much a big no-no, even though someone should probably told that to Bob and Linda despite it’s a family ordinated business, you see what Louise is doing to the school right now? She’s boosting the morale of the students. Of the teachers. Everyone in the school, well except for Frond of course, but imagine, if what Louise did to the school when being principal for a day, imagine her, in the future…if there is one if our lawmakers should hop on the Green New Deal bandwagon…imagine her being the president. Even though she already set her eyes in taking over the restaurant revealed in “Carpe Museum” back in Season 3. Oh and Frond’s attempt to take Louise out of power foiled again when spotting the perfect opportunity, only to spot Tammy’s interview with Mr. Branca.
Back to the principal’s office with Louise still trying to find the combination to the locked cabinet, she gets a visit from a random person looking for Principal Spoors who reveals to be the brother-in-law of the missing principal and also reveals the reason why he’s the school. Not because to visit Spoors, but to take the place of guidance counselor. In which questions Louise because she stated that why would there ever be a spot if Frond is already the guidance counselor. Only to reveal coming from Don, Spoors’ brother-in-law, that he’s the replacement because it looks like Frond will be getting fired. And that idea was brought up, at first I thought it was somewhat of a trap because Frond still want Louise out of the office following the changes that she’s doing to the school. But of course, thinking back, yeah, that seems rather stupid because Frond isn’t the type of person who would use Louise’s emotions for gain. Then again, said coming from the person once in his seventh grade year committing voter fraud. Louise knows that Frond is now in hot water and looks like he’s about to get the pink slip but Frond doesn’t know he’s gonna get the boot as he gives Don a tour of the school as Louise, Tina, and Gene watch over the tour Frond is giving Don and of course, once getting back to the office, spotted the perfect opportunity to open the cabinet before the day is done by asking Mr. Branca to hand over a crowbar.
Made it back with both Louise and Tina trying to open the cabinet doors with a crowbar while Gene tries to open it with a stapler. I guess Louise has to give Gene to do something since he don’t want to be left behind? Yeah, let’s go with that. The adults, mostly Schnur, Frond, and Don, spotted the three Belcher children trying to open the cabinet with brute strength and you got to give Schnur credit where credit is due because mostly she would like not allow Louise to do anything from entering Spoors’ office to trying to open the cabinet with a crowbar, but she gave Louise the green light of being principal and I guess gave the green light to Louise trying to open the cabinet despite that if she were to do that, she would like give the combination and save her the trouble. But…okay. Guess that’s that then. Anyway just as Frond was about to call Louise out, Louise decided to drop a massive truth bomb onto Frond and stated that Don, the person that Frond is with, is his replacement and have Ms. Schnur to have a long walk, noting that he’s gonna get fired from his job. Frond doesn’t believe it at first until Schnur asks Frond for a walk, meaning that Frond will be going bye-bye. And if you listen closely in the background, you can hear Frond’s hopes and dreams and pretty much everything being shattered. It’s like you’re feeling sorry for the guy. That’s like when your parents, either the mom or the dad, got a new job that would benefit the family only to find out that the job is out of state and you don’t even know about it until you go somewhere like going out for ice cream and sense the perfect opportunity like saying, “Hey, how are you enjoying your ice cream? That’s great. We’re moving to another state because I found a new job. Say goodbye to your friends, we’re leaving in like a week.” Jeez…jeez. Again, kind of felt sorry for the guy when hearing about this.
The kids once seeing Frond being taken away in sadness continue to open the cabinet up only to like the previous times Louise tried to open it, failed to open it. And just as Louise was about to throw in the towel when it comes to the cabinet, Tina found something interesting in the back of the lock, revealing the combination to the cabinet with the numbers 1-1-1-1 written in the back. The principal’s a fucking idiot. Just putting it out there. Spoors is pretty much a fucking idiot. He may be the big cheese of the school but…writing the combination of the lock…on the back of the lock? Might as well write down your credit card or social security number on an index card and then it slips from your pocket and a random individual decided to pick up and misuse it. In the age of the internet, it’s pretty much a two for one sale. Spoors is pretty much not a bright man. He is not a bright man.
The kids finally open the cabinet and see the stuff that was taken away from a Rubik’s cube to a slingshot all the way to an action figure, some comic books, a whoopie cushion, a troll doll, a baseball bat, to even…is that a switchblade? W-why? Why? Almost sounded like a concerned parent even though I don’t even have kids. I’m not even married but I question what the hell is going on?
The kids would go all in and enjoy the stuff that was in the cabinet, now open, however Louise ends up getting second thoughts after witnessing that Frond is about to lose to his job and about to be replaced with Don and it looks like, what Bob said in the beginning of the episode, using her powers for good, and now must save a man’s job from being taken away. And she does so by announcing a surprise assembly to the entire school and persuade the students to get Mr. Frond to keep his job.
Come the assembly with Louise on the mic and handing it over to Mr. Frond, he speaks to the students in a really somber emotion and tells everyone that life after leaving the school for good…yeah, kinda sad really as he now exits stage left to pack his stuff and prepares to leave as Louise introduces the students to the new guy who will be taking over, Don. Who introduce the students with some jokes, in which it looks like everyone is not getting the joke from him? So it’s pretty much dad jokes but nobody is getting the gist. Louise decided to do a little Q&A session for the new guidance counselor by getting the students who have their problems talked out one after another. Including some that we know has to come out with their problems…
From Rudy dealing his parents’ divorce and thinks that him having asthma is a factor for it. Which…somebody…protect this smol boy. J-just…just protect him, alright. Just protect him from a world of hurt that might throw at him, alright.
To Jimmy Jr complaining that Andy and Ollie are together because they’re twins but doesn’t have one to bond with, of course, enter Zeke to fill in the role, so there’s that to bolster with to fill in the so-called twin mentality.
To even later on with both Tammy and Jocelyn arguing over Tammy’s hair color and that was surprising because when she (Tammy) was first introduced back in Season 2, her hair color was brown but then episodes later in Season 3, she dyed it blonde. Despite that if you see a screencap from the episode over at the show’s wiki, her hair is blonde. So when Jocelyn brought up and accuses Tammy of copying her because of the hair color following their first meeting, which I think it’s probably after the events of “Bad Tina” when Tammy got her comeuppance from Tina, her hair was brown, her natural color. And of course, in which Tammy denies the accusation of copying her look. So we sort of have learn about both Tammy and Jocelyn. Tammy, I think we already know like a massive lot whereas to Jocelyn, who got no development and little to no screen time since her introduction, we got something…probably…but at least it’s something. Seriously, Bouchard…when is Jocelyn gonna have her own episode?
Anyway, everyone got their problems out to the new guidance counselor for him to answer like it’s the freaking Oprah Winfrey Show or Dr. Phil or whatever show your mom watch while you’re away at school or work or whatever and Don’s answer to a massive pack of students with their problems…to run away and not accept the offer. Thus putting the whole Frond getting replaced thing away as the day of Louise being principal is about to come to an end…well despite that Frond is already done packing his shit up and about to put it on his car.
And with her final three minutes left until the day is done with and Louise’s time in office as Principal for the Day is about to come to an end like a President after it’s second term in office, decided to do one last job before leaving office by rehiring Mr. Frond back into office. In which Frond said that Louise don’t have to do that but accepts the offer, thus Frond’s butt has been saved and said to Louise that she did a good job as principal even if it’s for the day despite earlier in the episode, worrying over the idea of Louise creating massive amounts of anarchy across the school. But it was a good main plot of the episode. Louise taking over the school as the big chees for the day, thought that it would be all fire and anarchy and opening the pits of hell in the middle of the hallway, almost sounding like Frond with his one, it did not disappoint. I really enjoyed it. Despite that the whole cabinet thing, you think that it would play a part later on in the episode, but nope, plot device. Well, waste of a plot device that wasn’t even been in use. And then the whole Louise feel bad for Frond thing, yeah, getting somewhat flashbacks to “A Few ‘Gurt Men” with the trial with the whole Louise not giving an iota of a shit for Frond and his problems until it went a full 180 and feels bad and helps him out. So that was nice to see over. But we’re not done here peoples, we have the subplot to head over in about…now.
What would’ve been a normal day over at the restaurant…who am I kidding? When was ever a normal day at the restaurant? Bob does his normal work of flipping the patties for the customers’ orders but then all of a sudden, Teddy comes into the place and asks Bob, having somewhat of a conversation despite that he can’t like multitask all together, about a show that he watched and when Teddy mention the whole topic of the technique involving the spatula…yep, Bob automatically messed up one patty. But that’s okay. That’s okay, that’s just one fuck up. It’s not like you’re gonna mess it up again. And so he did again. And again. And again. So apparently, Bob forgets to flip burger patties and keep on messing things up and you can thank Teddy for messing things up. Congratulations, I think you may have fucked up a man’s job.
Bob tries again but this time in a more slower and more focused manner when it comes to flipping the burger patties, hoping that this time around, he wouldn’t mess up the coordination with the spatula. And I should probably mention that Bob isn’t built for the whole multitasking thing, this coming from Linda, that he can’t be distracted. Questions like what Teddy been spewing out from his mouth can’t get into his mind and that his brain is not built for these type of stuff. It’s like trying to study for the biggest test of your life and it holds like 25%, maybe 30% of your grade for the semester or, well it’s now the Spring season, training to be a pitcher to be on a local baseball or softball team and you can’t be distracted and must be in the zone but then your friend or family member decided to step in and ask you stuff enough to make you lose focus and not getting the groove you found back. That’s pretty much Bob with the burger making process and Teddy spewing some words from his mouth made him lose focus. And it’s not like with “Sexy Dance Healing” when Bob just forget how to come up with the Burger of the Day, mostly because that’s the stress talking, this looks like it’s gonna take a while for Bob to get his focus back.
And talk about worse timing because just as Bob deals with a massive problem with forgetting how to flip burgers, we have Jimmy Pesto coming in and needing a breather from a pack house over at his restaurant and when he heard from Linda that Bob developed the so-called yips that Bob got, of course, in typical Jimmy Pesto fashion, make fun of Bob and uses it to light his day. So remind me why I hate Jimmy Pesto as a whole? Other than the whole Jimmy Jr thing but that’s another story for another time? Oh yeah, him being an ass. But unlike with Ass Hat Joe, Jimmy was pretty much born an ass. And has been ever since.
Bob is doing again, going for round three maybe, probably four when trying to flip the burgers and does so by carefully carrying it and trying to flip it without any distractions as Linda watch the whole thing unfold and look, he did it…progress! Despite the other patties used before the current one that fell to shit during the whole process. And then Teddy comes into play through the window from the booth and judge Bob’s performance only for Bob to call him out. Blaming him for breaking his concentration. Making him lose his focus. Making him messing up each and every patty that he ever flipped. Like he wants to murder Teddy for what he did. Mad at Teddy over what happened, got a few laughs over that little blame game and of course, Bob has to be comforted by Linda as the situation goes on and probably got even more worse than before.
Teddy later on in the episode found the perfect thing and opportunity when it comes to Bob having his yippie-roo of a problem with the yips and of course, since it’s his fault for causing Bob to forget how to flip the burgers, he has to go and fix it. And he does so by referencing a movie Bill Durham where, not the main character, but the pitcher in the movie, when he was having trouble like what Bob is currently going through, in hopes to take his mind from it, a woman hand him her underwear as a good luck charm. And no, he doesn’t have to wear Linda’s, or even Teddy’s, but rather…Jimmy Pesto’s. And he even carried it to the restaurant for Bob to wear it and how he got it was pretty much simple, he bribed Trev to hand it over for building a doghouse for his dog, in which he has to head over to start constructing it, from Jimmy’s gym bag. But Bob would rather not wear his underwear but Linda stated that he pretty much doesn’t have a choice and have to wear it in hopes to get rid of the yips. Like imagine you’re in this situation, coming back to that little metaphor earlier with the whole getting the focus you need but then someone stepped in and took a shit on your groove and made you lose focus. Well, in hopes getting that back into you in time for the big thing, you got to need something that can give you somewhat good luck even if it includes something that you might regret like for example, wearing an ugly sweater that your grandma gave you that one Christmas morning and you hate it at first, think it’s embarrassing or itchy or making you sweat easily but somehow, the tables turned back into your direction because of that sweater. That’s mostly going to be Bob…wearing the underwear that was once belonged to Jimmy Pesto.
Which just be thankful that we didn’t get to see Bob wearing Jimmy Pesto’s underwear, though that was saved towards the end credits of the episode, but he is wearing them, don’t know if he is currently wearing pants with the underwear inside or the pants completely off and just wearing with the breeze coming through, oh man, that’s gonna be in your mental image for the next week as he sees Jimmy Pesto entering the restaurant to do more tormenting, Bob decided to thank Jimmy Pesto for the underwear that cured his yip, despite that Jimmy seems to be dumbfounded. Not noticing that he’s wearing his underwear and Bob of course, torments him back, thus causing Jimmy Pesto to exit out to close out the subplot of the episode. The subplot seems like it was going to its same old, same old somewhat of a formula of going nowhere but as the subplot progresses, it’s get to the point where it was somewhat decent but I did get somewhat of a laugh coming from Bob blaming Teddy, arguing with him like he wants to murder the guy. And all it took to fix the problem…a pair of underwear…that haven’t been washed…might as well burn that after this episode is done.
Reaction/Thoughts:
So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? Honestly, this episode did not disappoint. Mostly coming from the main plot of the episode with the whole Louise being principal of the day thing and making some changes in the students’ favor. And despite that there were some flaws, only a bit, only a bit, did not disappoint.
Who knew that Louise being the principal…surprising that she didn’t like burn the whole school down and think that with her taking over the wheel would lead to complete and total anarchy, coming from Frond, not me, but who knew that her taking office would improve things over at Wagstaff? Scores going up, people being more focused. Thinking that they’re having the time of their lives, this coming from Louise in charge, who knew coming from a nine year old have leadership skills that is somewhat off the scale, in a good way despite Frond acted a bit overreacted following her breaking into Spoors’ office and making some changes while at the same time, trying to open the cabinet.
She used her powers for good for the students and teachers despite that Frond is against the idea of Louise gaining all that power and making some rules of her own until Frond becomes the person that might need Louise to patch things up when hearing coming from her that he’s about to get replaced by Spoors’ brother-in-law, Don, who has no expertise of helping people, and uses her powers to get the other students to have a Q&A when introducing Don with their problems and have a boatload of problems to make him exit out and not accept the job that ending up handing the job back to Frond. So it’s sort of like with “A Few ‘Gurt Men” with the trial thing with both Louise and Frond like when Frond looks like he is down in the dumps, Louise has to come in and save Frond whether if it’s defending him during the yogurt accusation and prove his innocence or saving him from getting fired from the guidance counselor position, they may have their differences, like a lot of differences, but Louise has to come in and save Frond from whatever stuff the writers might throw at him and it was cute at the end. It was cute with Louise, with her final three minutes as principal, to rehire Frond back into the school. So it was nice.
The subplot was rather decent at best. It’s not bad despite the beginning of it seems like it was going nowhere at first and seems like it was somewhat dragging on, not like in the likes of “Sexy Dance Healing” with Bob having trouble coming up with the burger of the day though that involves Bob breaking his back when falling on the sidewalk. It’s not like that, it’s more of him losing concentration thanks to Teddy and tries to get his groove back but somewhat failed a few times. To be fair, did get a few laughs from the subplot, mostly with the whole Bob blaming Teddy for his yips over at the window, so it made it somewhat of an enjoyable episode to glance over. And of course, Bob one upping Jimmy Pesto thanks to Teddy giving him his underwear, which…burn it. Burn it after you’re done wearing. That thing is not clean. Better like head over the grill or find a furnace and like burn it.
So all and all, I think this episode was a good one in my opinion. It did not disappoint. I think I really like this one for the year rather the season, again, despite that we’re now at the halfway point of the season since we’re now in March and the season ends in May, too early to say overall for the season, may have to go top five in the season, it’s the main plot. It’s the main plot that did the job for me and that little scene from the subplot is what made it a good episode. But that’s up to you to decide in your opinion. So for now, I’ll be giving “The Fresh Princ-ipal”…
…a rating of an 8.5 out of 10. And this episode is a first of what could be a very busy Spring season as we now prepare to close out the season, of course, at the halfway mark, passed the halfway mark now, this could a very long second, maybe third period of the season and we have somewhat of a good episode to kick things off, mostly with the main plot doing the job. Subplot…yeah, would say need some improvements at best but it was a decent one at best to deem it a good episode despite the flaws spewing over but it didn’t downplay it, I’ll you give you that but that’s my opinion.
