Rev up them grills and pop some popcorn and grab a blanket. Fall is finally here, meaning that the Burger Season has finally been kicked off. I can least try to do a full season this time around and not just left in the middle of it. I’m just one person! Okay. In this week’s season premiere episode of Bob’s Burgers, Tina disguises herself as a boy in hopes to find her boy toy of the week who is auditioning to replace Boo Boo in the Boyz 4 Now tryouts while the rest of the Belcher family has to take care of a baby rat that Teddy leave it in the care of them in my spoilerific review of the first episode of the ninth season of the series, titled, “Just One of the Boyz 4 Now for Now”. What up with the series and full fledged titles? I feel like this is gonna be a thing now?
A long summer hiatus since the end of Season 8 back in May and the cast and crew of the show, in my opinion, are really giving it their all to make sure the season premiere is a big one. With this episode despite being the premiere of its ninth season, it’s also their 150th episode. So that could explain the promotions all around from TV ads on other channels to having the theme of the show to some burger restaurants. But unlike what they did with the 100th episode back in 2016, there were some holes that needed to patch up.
And the 150th episode has Tina in the spotlight because it’s her time to shine as she, of course, falls head over heels over a guy that isn’t named Jimmy Jr that made the Tina/Jimmy Jr shippers cringe in full disgust. But this episode is mostly on Tina’s growth, well, despite that she ends up disguising herself as a guy and try to find the boy that she bumped into when getting the napkins out of the car in an area that is one big sea of boy that even Tina can’t even one simple task of not falling in love with all of them and at least find his boy toy. We’ll dwell into that later on in the review.
And of course, it isn’t a season premiere…without a music. Five to be exact. Yes, I counted. Five. Five musical numbers, mostly due to Tina’s fantasies whenever she looks at a boy’s eyes for the first time like she freaking won a prize after winning a game show. This episode ranked third when it comes to the episodes with the highest amounts of musical numbers with “The Bleakening” from last December being the current record holder with eight. And with the movie coming out in 2020…competition is really coming in strong when it comes to the counts. It’s the first time since 2016 with a season premiere with a musical number kicking off the new season. And there’s a lot to choose from with this very episode. So I’ll be probably tell you which one of the five is probably my fave later on.
Of course, when Tina brought up about her bumping into Damon, that’s where the family noticed that Tina is full on boy crazy. And they do have proof to tell the viewers that Tina is full on boy crazy other than what we saw from the past episodes with Jimmy Jr, Josh, Jonas, Nathan, Darryl, Joe, Henry at some point I don’t know, Duncan from Sasha’s debate club, every boy in a 5-15, maybe 50 mile radius that Tina just can’t lay her eyes away and yet, gave into the temptation and now, we can add Damon to the list. Surprise that people like Zeke, Dillon, or Becky have not made it to the list. And I kinda make a gesture back with my Land Ship review that Tina might have a thing called Obsessive Male Gender Disorder, or OMGD, due to her being majorly boy crazy. You think I made that one up? Bitch, I checked an article last night during a four-hour power outage and found out…it’s a thing. It’s actually a thing. The guys over at Zoey 101 are not bullshitting. Google “Obsessive Male Gender Disorder” and read that article from The Odyssey. Yeah, Tina has OMGD and wants to find Damon, so they can hook up, despite that the Boyz 4 Now audition that Damon is heading off to…yeah, boys only. Meaning Tina is barred from coming in due to the fact that…they might mistake her as another fangirl. And yeah, Bob won’t let her invade the audition. But a few moments later, the lock has been unlocked when Bob finally gives Tina full permission to invade the audition and she can’t go to the audition as her usual self. If she’s gonna find Damon, looks like Tina…will go as a boy.
Literally. Dressing up a boy. Calling herself Dino, taking a jab to her Dina phase back in Season 2, the disguise can’t fail Tina. Well…until…you know what, let’s wait until the end of the main plot section of the episode. Maybe we can do that. And it’s funny because Tina, at one point, was gonna be a boy named Daniel, mostly because of the voice actor, Dan Mintz. But then some changes has to be made in order for the show to be on the air and badda bing, badda boom, the boy known as Daniel has became the girl known as Tina as we know today. On to the audition. And if you think that Tina finding Damon in the auditions was gonna be a cakewalk? Well…
That is one big sea of boy. And knowing that Tina is majorly boy crazy and have OMGD, this is gonna be the hardest Try Not to Fall in Love challenge that Tina has to tackle when trying to find Damon. And boy is she been blowing that challenge. Try boy number 2 when the guy ask Tina if she had any gum. And cue the fantasy music count number two.
Getting a fantasy of her in what appears to be in an 80s exercise video with the guy that Tina is currently laid her eyes on him as the instructor. And man, that boy has moves when teaching the girls in the video fantasy that seems colorful in the background. The visuals in this and more fantasies that Tina come up later on looks incredible. Bob’s Burgers is doing amazing with the artwork and animation and with the musical number in play, talk about a triple threat. But anyway, that fantasy ends when Tina finally snapped out of it and must stay focus to find Damon and fall head over heels over another guy. Head over to the bathroom to clear her head and getting back into the focus of her mission, which is of coursing, finding Damon. Only a brick wall can stop you, it’s another boy. Here come boy number three. On to the fantasy talk!
Tina’s 3rd fantasy over another guy sends us what appears to be a parody of the hit 1980s film 16 Candles. Where Tina is the girl and the guy…let’s say Guy Number 3, as I guess the best friend who also have feelings for her? I don’t know, I haven’t watched 16 Candles, sue me. Tina falls for the jock and when the night of prom comes in, she and the jock become prom king and queen, only to get dumped. All of this because of a stupid bet. Are fucking shitting right me?! Just be thankful this is a fantasy. Because if that were to happen, then you would end up dealing my unyielding rage. Guy Number 3 finally goes on the rebound and of course, parodying that, you could call it iconic, scene with the birthday and sitting on the table by the window. Yeah that. But yeah, talk about a throwback to use in that fantasy. Oh yeah, and Guy Number 3 is looking for a friend…who isn’t a girl. That of course that Tina can’t say yes because…she is disguised as a boy. Invading the audition for boys as a boy. Looking for her boy toy. Cutting in line in hopes to get to Damon before his audition is up and ready to go. Only a brick wall can stop you. It’s another boy. And that’s where the somewhat bias comes into play.
Daveed Diggs. Never heard of him until he was brought up days, if not, weeks before the episode and him being casted in this one. Found out that he was on Hamilton. That popular Broadway show that was created by, of course, Lin Manuel Miranda, and not gonna about Diggs’ performance in Tina’s fourth fantasy of boy-dom, him spitting some bars and Tina speaking French in that one scene…mmm, mmm…that sold me. This is my favorite out of the rest. And I haven’t made it to the penultimate and final one of the episode. The whole office scene, from the beginning with a boardroom meeting cranking the volume up from boring to interesting all the way to a business trip to France. By the way, congrats to France for winning the World Cup back in the Summer. Now you have a curse under your heads. Ending with a business trip with them being together. Man, the animators and writers are really shooting hoops with this one. Of course, like the past two, Tina got her focus back and head back to find Damon once again. What? Is the game of Marco Polo illegal to use now? Pretty sure that would…actually no, that would send Tina to another trip to Fantasy Land. And speaking of Damon…
Tina finally reached to Damon in the warm up room, revealing herself for a bit for him to notice him like her saying, “Hey Damon, remember me? The girl you bumped into earlier today while carrying the packet of napkins? Well…I’m here. Dressed up as a guy and tracked you down without getting caught. Now that we’re here, let’s go on a date.” And just Tina finally got to Damon…only a brick wall can stop you. It’s another boy. And make things worse, found out that the new boy that Tina laid her eyes on…is the friend to, guess who? Damon. And after all that. All of the things you tried to do, from start to finish, trying to find Damon because you laid your eyes since your first meeting…you gonna give that mission up for another guy? And she did.
And thus, enter Fantasy number four with the setting being the space station and we have two astronauts, Damon and his friend, fighting over on who gets Tina’s love. A brief rap battle was in the mix, as the two guys take their space suits off, don’t worry, don’t worry, oxygen won’t be a major problem since they are in the station. But of course, and I know this is short to describe this very fantasy, but we wrap up the fantasy scene because…yeah. Not suitable for children. And yes, children watch the series. What the hell is your excuse? Anyway, Tina starts getting rid of the disguise following that fantasy to Damon and his friend. But will it get Tina to shoot the ball into the goal?
No. Girl fumbled. One of the boys in the back noticed that Tina was a girl following taking off her disguise and that right there, got the guard’s attention and got sent into custody in the security room, awaiting her family to come and pick her up. And with that, Tina’s quest has finally to a complete and…somewhat entertaining and somewhat disappointing end. And probably haven’t somewhat reached the finish line but was that close to reaching it. Here’s your trophy.
But yeah, Tina got in trouble for invading into the audition and now her family is picking her up from the place. Telling them that…yeah, she failed to prove her family wrong when it comes to not falling in love with the past five boys on her way to Damon and proving their point right about her being boy crazy. But it looks like the Belcher family just straight up accept the fact that Tina is boy crazy and…can we talk about what Linda just said about Jimmy Jr for a bit? Because…holy shit, that was out of nowhere and it’s like what happened during the events of last season’s “V for Valentine-detta” is seemed canon and Linda thinks that Jimmy Jr is a straight up fuckboy. That made the Tina/Jimmy Jr shippers cringe a bit and the anti-shippers feel proud that this was brought up. Oh…please don’t give us any shipping drama for the new season. I swear to god please! And then, we get to the end of the episode where they finally announced who’s gonna take Boo Boo’s place in the band. Drum roll please…
And the person who will be taking Boo Boo’s place is…
Boo Bo…wait, what? Boo Boo? Boo Boo is taking his own spot? How th…okay…okay…just to put this out there, how many of y’all knew that Boo Boo was gonna make a comeback and reunite with the band? Because I do. Boo Boo returning to the band was so goddamn predictable. Remember when I said that there’s some holes that needed to be fix? Well…this is one of them. And this is coming from the Bob’s Burgers wikia on the episode. Mostly because if you go on the episode’s wikia page, you see his voice actor’s name, Max Greenfield, on the list. And if you think that Greenfield would like do like voicing another character other than Boo Boo, maaaaybe things wouldn’t be somewhat problematic. But seeing Max Greenfield’s name on the wikia and yet, ruin the surprise…should’ve kept that confidential to create the surprise that the people who don’t even look at the wikia make a surprising emotion. It’s like with last season’s Doctor Who back in 2017 with the return of John Simm, who played The Master during the David Tennant era before The Master disappear for four years until returning as a female incarnation named Missy. People who never looked at the updates on what the season is holding were kept playing the speculation card…until World Enough and Time and noticing him in disguise as the caretaker, thinking to themselves, “Yeah, that’s John Simm,” like you can see through the disguise. That’s what I’m seeing with Boo Boo’s returning to the episode and of course, the band. But yeah, Boo Boo makes his return and with that, Boyz 4 Now is whole again. Thanks for wasting some people’s time episode. Of course, let’s not forget that with Boo Boo here…Louise still crushing over him. Continuity. Now, let’s talk about the ending sequence because…let’s talk about…
You have Tina going into the her fifth and wow, that’s a shitload of boys from the members of Boyz 4 Now to the boys at the audition…I know that she’s boy crazy, yes. But…with every other boy behind her back…even though it’s a fantasy and of course, a Bob’s Burgers credit sequence, what girl doesn’t want to have a hoard of whatever gender you love in your column? Well…Tina does. And it looks like she’s not picking either one of the many boys. NOT one boy. Tina got a full set harem. Well, reverse harem since Tina is boy crazy. Let’s not forget about that. Not picking one boy but has all the boys on her side…yeah, Tina’s poly. Tina’s polyamorous. She can’t have one boy. She’s not a chooser. She rather have all of the boys bowing down to her. And I’m the person like the idea of her being poly. Nothing wrong with that, and I think it was right there, if you haven’t watched the past episodes, pretty sure there were some clues. In “Bad Tina”, during that fantasy to kick off the episode, you have Tina with Jimmy Jr, who just drank a potion that can make someone attracted to someone, mostly because of butts, and a zombie, of course, it’s Tina. In “Two for Tina”, when both Jimmy Jr and Josh was busy dance fighting over Tina’s affection, when having trouble to choose either one, the chemistry in Josh or the butt fetish in Jimmy Jr, she decided to have a freaking three-way, in which both Jimmy Jr and Josh felt uncomfortable over that. And in “The Frond Files” in Tina’s side of her story, of course, she got a hoard of boys, athletes to be exact, zombified. And carrying and treating Tina like she’s been just been named queen. The point is, Tina, poly, might as well get use to it. And even if Tina end up with a guy or a girl by the end of the series, she’s never gonna let her obsession go, no matter the gender. No matter the butts. Oh yeah, and the ending sequence to close out the episode…second place. Diggs’ scene sold me. Sorry about that. You can’t rival something that is performed by a Hamilton actor. Man, I should really see Hamilton. Never seen a Broadway show but as a history buff, and mostly due to popularity, I say why not?
The subplot with the rest of the Belcher family taking care of a baby rat that needed to be nursed back into full health that Teddy, while it was cute mostly because of the rat, and Bob also…but it’s the subplot is playing throughout the episode from them trying to take turns and given orders by Teddy on how to take care of it carefully like it’s a newborn, even though the rat is a newborn, to the surprise health inspection by Hugo and trying to hide the rat to avoid getting shut down. Almost seems familiar to that one subplot in “Speakeasy Rider” where both Bob and Linda had to lie to Ron and Hugo to hide the homebrew beer that Teddy created and use what’s known as the yeast excuse. Taking notes from iCarly I see? Speaking of Ron, where the hell is he?
Hiding the baby rat is not gonna be an easy thing to do when dealing a health inspector like Hugo to come in an unwanted notice. It’s like smoking pot and trying to clear the air of any scent of that mary jane and get rid of the smoke detector without getting an attention of a parent. No, I haven’t smoked marijuana. And I am for legalizing it. But yeah, they had to distract Hugo by giving him a glass of water. Really? Testing the water. I know that checking the water is important to a health inspector, but…that should up for like…other government agencies like I don’t know…the water…company? I don’t know? But man, the man knows how to drink. Of course Hugo kept on hearing the squeaks from the baby rat. And the Belchers kept on lying like nothing is going wrong here. Until a few squeaks later and Hugo now decided to step in to find the rat. Only to not noticed that in an affirmative quick action like he’s trying to gain Ultra Instinct, Bob decided to hide the rat in the last place he would hide from Hugo and avoid a possible shut down…inside his pants.
Not the place to hide the rat but it looks like it’s the only best suitable way to do so when Hugo got into the kitchen and when he checked the rat’s box, surprise! No rat. Thanks to Bob hiding the rat. However, looks like he’s about to break as he was hoping for Hugo to GTFO of the restaurant while at the same time, feeling like his private parts are getting attacked by the rat. Thankfully, Hugo decided to leave when noticing that there is no rat, thanks to Bob hiding it, meaning that the coast is clear and time to put the rat back into it’s box and of course, continuing the rat back to health. Of course, might want to have Bob tested first because I don’t know if that rat Teddy found has rabies. What’s that? You didn’t even noticed that the rat might have possible rabies? How are you not affected? But anyway, the subplot of the episode, I want to say bland. Not in the form of boring or uninteresting and hoping the subplot to be gone like I’m snapping my fingers like I’m freaking Thanos. It was cute in the beginning, mostly due to Bob crying over the baby rat like he got another newborn child, or grandchild…actually no, another newborn child would’ve been an okay use of words. But by the time we get to Hugo, it almost like we’re seeing Speakeasy Rider all over again and almost feels like the writers are reusing the same thing, only with except we have a rat and not beer. Seriously, Belcher family, I know you want to help Teddy out but when it comes something that is gaining attention of the health inspector, just say no. Just…say no. Help me once, shame on you. Help me twice…you gotta say no. Okay. Just for once.
Reaction/Thoughts:
So all and all, what do I think about the Season Premiere of Bob’s Burgers? Gotta say, the writers and animators are really shooting hoops into this episode and despite being both the Season Premiere and the show’s 150th episode, it was good throughout the episode…all the way to the near end with that not so surprising ending with Boo Boo rejoining the band.
Not to mention, the cute yet bland subplot. On to the main plot, it was a good one to watch as Tina tries to get to her goal to reach to Damon when bumping into him in the earlier parts of the episode. Sadly, the challenge was somewhat of a failure because all Tina has to do is try not to fall in love with any other that isn’t Damon along the way. Only a brick wall can stop you, it’s a lot of boys. You know that wall is ready to erode since Season 1, right?
The Tina development is what really supposed to be the highlight of the episode. Mostly on the focus of her being majorly boy crazy. And her invading the auditions and try not to fall into temptations is quite something to watch, even if she fails miserably whenever she stumbles into a random boy and got sent into fantasy land like someone who is psychic got randomly touched and the psychic person sees either a good day or a terrible fate waiting to happen.
The visuals on each and every fantasy that Tina came up with throughout the episode was incredible to watch over. And the art and animation works really well as the music progresses. Not to mention, the music is also a damn good listen. Mostly on that third fantasy with a character voiced by Daveed Diggs singing and Tina’s French for a brief moment, that sold me.
And speaking of Diggs, him, Josh Gad, and other involved in this episode…man this episode is jumping the whole nine yards with this one and what does these actors have in common? Well despite being celebrities and somewhat follow the status quo, but they all held from Broadway. I think some are still doing Broadway, I don’t know. Might check on that. It’s like watching a Broadway show on screen. And in animation form and not like live like you see on NBC. This was a star pact episode. And I would say that it would be perfect episode…if there isn’t some holes in the walls that needed to be patched up.
Mostly on the whole Boo Boo coming back thing and of course, the subplot of the episode. Like I said earlier in the review, things would’ve been okay if Greenfield’s name wasn’t popped up and was hoping for like an element of surprise in the lines of “Holy Shit, that’s Boo Boo! What the fuck is going on?!” But no, being the dumbass that I am, the Wikia gave it away when it comes to Boo Boo. Once you see Max Greenfield’s name on the list over at the Wikia, you know that Boo Boo is about to make an appearance. Or better yet, have one of the boys who are audition to fill in the role while Boo Boo continues with his solo career. Works with the others in real life with Beyoncé after leaving Destiny’s Child or Justin Timberlake after N’Sync. But no, there are some aspects where one of the members decided to secede from the band to do a solo career only to rejoin like it’s Reconstruction. That happened to Fall Out Boy a few years ago with Patrick Stump. Even I didn’t even know about this and I started listen to them around 2015, 2016.
The other hole that needed to patch up is the subplot. Where is the conclusion? What happened to the rat after Hugo left? Did Bob get treated for possible rabies? It’s like Speakeasy Rider but you taken the notes from the subplot with Bob and Teddy with the golf balls back in Like Gene for Chocolate? I’m not saying that show could soon make a major U-turn and decide to make the unbearable play known to man in jumping the shark? No sir or mam or other, I’m just saying that maybe we can some subplots that doesn’t end with no conclusions and try to either at least a decent ending or in a worst case scenario, a deus ex machina. Either way, at least have a conclusion to wrap up the subplot so we can get ready to wrap the main plot up to end the episode? Please? So to sum the episode up, I think this episode is a superb and full of stars taking over but have some holes that needed to be fixed. I give “Just One of the Boyz 4 Now for Now”…
…a rating of a 9 out of 10. Like I said, this episode was full of amazing visuals and the songs that was in use was incredible to follow suit and not to mention, Tina’s…I guess you can call it development and growth in play when trying her best to not fall in love with the other boys while trying to get to Damon. But of course, like I said, there are some holes that needed be fix with the whole confidentially with Boo Boo and the conclusion of the baby rat subplot. Tune in this Sunday Night where the Belcher children team up with their landlord, Mr. Fischoeder, to win a prize that they need over at Family Funtime while Bob and Linda are going farming…in the alleyway for some eggs in the second episode of Bob’s Burgers Season 9, “The Taking of Funtime One Two Three”.
