For the first time in nearly two years, we got ourselves a Halloween episode on Bob’s Burgers. We should’ve got one last season but didn’t and instead, we got two episodes that were “horror based” with both “Escape from Which Island” and “Fraud of the Dead”. And remember, the reason why we didn’t have one last season is not because of the strikes that affected production, but it was mostly because of the decisions made by the networks. So put your blame on them. At least the review for this year’s Halloween episode won’t be out around the November timeframe this time around.
In this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, days before the Halloween holiday, Louise decides to stage a murder mystery with dolls as the props at a doll shop that captured her attention in my spoilerific review of the fourth episode of Season 15 of Bob’s Burgers and the twelfth Halloween-themed episode of the series, titled “For Whom the Doll Toes”.
And as I said at the start of the episode, this is the first time in nearly two years that we last have a Halloween episode on the show with the previous Halloween episode being Season 13’s “Apple Gore-chard (But Not Gory)” back in 2022. So, some hype was built up because of several reasons leading up to the episode’s premiere this past weekend, And there are some to list out.
A Halloween episode is one of the many reasons for the hype being built because we didn’t get one last season despite that the past few Halloween episodes dating back to as far as Season 10 with “Pig Trouble in Little Tina” or Season 11 with “Heartbreak Hotel-oween”... in my opinion…eh. But that’s just the first on the list because the second on the list would be who the writer is for this episode. And lo and behold, it’s the man himself behind the writer’s desk for this week’s installment, that being Loren Bouchard. Yep, the big man himself. And with him taking control of the episode, you’d think that we’re about to eat that good shit. Really good shit because of the likes of “The Plight Before Christmas” and “Amelia”. Though we have an intro instead of what we thought we would have no intro and skip to the start of the episode like a cold open. And then the third item on the list, is the return of one Rachel Bisselbender and having Tina Fey reprising her role. She became somewhat of a fan favorite since her debut back in Season 13’s “The Plight Before Christmas” and we thought that she would be a one-off because she was a substitute teacher who was filling in for Ms. Merkin. That was until Comic-Con earlier this year with Loren at the panel bringing up her name and the poster for the panel shows a woman outside of a doll shop that ended up being Bisselbender herself. So yeah, a lot of things to stir into this episode.
Other than that, we have a murder mystery as this year’s Halloween episode but not in a way of having to solve another cold case, but more of a staged murder mystery and with dolls as the props. Hence, why the word “Doll” in the episode title. As for the word “Toes”... if you know when watching the episode, you know. And yes, that this the theme for this year’s Halloween episode for this season of Bob’s Burgers. Might as well break it down as if we’re investigating a case, this is “For Whom the Doll Toes”.
The episode starts on a cold Fall afternoon with the kids walking home from school with Halloween being days away, You’d think that the Belcher siblings would be excited for the one night a year where they dress up and door-to-door to get candy, Not to Gene because there’s something that is bothering him since leaving school for the day along with Tina and Louise. And that is him not invited to a Halloween party with his peers. You’d think that it sort of feels like more of a Tina thing than a Gene or Louise thing because of wanting to go to a social event but didn’t get an invite. Think back to “Pig Trouble in Little Tina” with her not getting an invite to the hayride just to get it because she fell to peer pressure just by poking fun at a fetal pig.
The “party” that Gene is referring to is somewhat of a party but more of a social gathering or a night out with the boys hosted by a kid in his grade named Julian and even though it doesn’t sound like a “party” because it’s mostly them playing video games and eating candy corn, that alone is a red flag just by bringing up candy corn but Gene wanted to go to the gathering but now, he can’t. And he was oblivious about all of this throughout the school day because he had no idea that there’s an event that is about to happen and it wasn’t until a character who hadn’t had a speaking role in three years.
The party was brought up by one Alex Papasian, still voiced by Paul Rust, when both he and Gene were finishing up fixing their lockers. And boy, oh oh boy, Alex was put in a tight spot after bringing it up that caught Gene’s attention and questions why he didn’t get the invite. Alex tries to sell some pity points by telling Gene that if Gene didn’t get the invite, hence him not going to the gathering, then he should throw away his invite if it means not wanting to upset his friend. Only for Gene to tell Alex that he doesn’t have to do that and let him go there without him. Good to know that Bisselbender in this episode, and we’ll get to her in a bit, isn’t the only character who was brought back in the show, even if it’s for a short scene and it was for a flashback, but good to know that Alex is back on the show when it comes to having a speaking role and not being there in the background. Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for one of my favorite side characters to return from the waiting room from hell.
Once the kids leave the barrette shop because Tina needs a pair for her Halloween costume and yes, we only saw her in costume at the end of the episode and did not see either Gene or Louise in theirs with her dressing up as Freddy Krueger, with Tina leaving empty handed and just as they continue to head home from school, they spotted a doll store and taking a look through the window to see the shop itself filled with dolls in each shelf. And upon the inside of the store is an old face that Gene recognizes behind the counter, that being Rachel Bisselbemder, once again voiced by Tina Fey.
They enter the store and decide to give themselves a tour of the place while having a bit of a chatter with Gene’s substitute teacher and questions why she is behind the counter, turns out that this is her family’s store that she is being put in charge of, mostly because her folks are out of town for the weekend for a doll event. Thus, handing the keys to the shop to Bisselbender to watch over. The kids take a tour across the store with Tina somewhat still has her fear of dolls, once again, make up your damn minds, where they come across one of the dollhouses with some dolls being mutilated as if they just encounter a crime scene but with dolls. According to Bisselbender, she did that. And her reason was that she only did it so she could take photos and send them to her friends. Thought it was Halloween at first just to get to the spirit, but no, it’s for corporate tax purposes. Because if there’s one thing the IRS loves other than taking stuff away because the taxes aren’t paid on time, it’s mutilated dolls. That alone catches Louise’s attention and wants to host a murder mystery of her own. Especially once Tina and Gene leave the building and Louise stays behind for a bit to talk to Bisselbender regarding the mutilated dolls and her ideas about the dolls and the dollhouse.
Especially once we get to the dinner table going into the evening hours. Louise has a script in hand at the dinner table and reveals that both she and Bisselbender are doing a murder mystery at the doll shop, turning it into a private event with her family as the only attendance for the show. Rather, Tina and Gene and not have Linda and Bob involved in the show as her audience, though that’s not going to stop them from tagging along going into the next day. Louise has the script written out, a couple of pages, ready to go that she had written while everyone was doing their daily activity, that being doing their job at the restaurant. And when I said that Linda and Bob have to tag along going into the next day despite Louise’s calls to not have them go and only want Tina and Gene along for the show, they’re tagging along because Linda wants to go and see the show and also wanting to show her support for her youngest daughter. And going to drag Bob to attend the show, much to his dismay because he can’t handle taking care of the restaurant on his lonesome when opening up early. Especially when having Teddy over for him to order his food and have a chat with both Bob and Linda... or just Bob in general. Hence, the one flashback scene with him and Teddy doing a handshake. Other than that, the show for the next day is a go for the doll murder mystery to place.
Going into the next day and the rest of the Belcher family sans Louise walk their way to the doll shop in jackets instead of raincoats since it appears, according to Bob, it’s starting to rain. Also, a bit of a change of wardrobe for Linda with her ditching the cardigan and going for the sweater. I guess it might be because it is supposed to rain for the day and a cardigan doesn’t have a hood. How should I know, I’m not a fashion expert. And also you have Gene still being mopey over him not getting an invite to attend Julian’s party that is still going to stick around throughout the rest of the episode. Once again, feels like something coming from Tina rather than Gene when it comes to his situation over not getting the invitation.
The family enters the shop as we are entering the final few scenes of the first act of the episode with Bob and Linda being treated with some snacks that Bisselbender brought to keep them company as Gene and Tina get into position for the show to begin. So, here is how the story goes for Louise to begin the murder mystery: we have a set of male dolls as male students attending a luxurious house for an event hosted by one of the students going by the name Mr. Sweater. And the other students in attendance go by the names Mr. Brown Suit, Mr. Eyes, Mr. Funny Face, Mr. Stiff Arms, and Mr. Jacket. And according to Louise, Mr. Sweater learned about something disturbing that caught his attention. Something disturbing that chilled him to the core regarding an incident at school back in the day and wants to get to the bottom of it along with his peers. Too bad that the conversation is not as hidden as it looks that was supposed to be between Mr. Sweater and the others because his chef has overheard the whole damn thing from start to finish as if he’s likely going to be the op in the story and could potentially derail everything. So, the story progresses with the guys coming together and discussing what is going on and pretty much gives the question to Tina and Gene... pretty much everyone in attendance but mostly Tina and Gene, what is the incident that is bothering Mr. Sweater? A question that should get everyone to get to the bottom of all of this, That changes one night because as everyone falls asleep...
Mr. Brown Suit got sent packing. Head smashed like a pumpkin with the trophy as the murder weapon. Dead at the scene once the cops were called and arrived to investigate what was going on. And knowing that it’s a murder mystery because we all remember how the board game Clue played, everyone is a suspect behind Mr. Brown Suit's murder as if someone doesn’t want the situation to be settled. Once again, serving as the op that stands in the way. And no one leaves until the suspect is compromised. This leads us to our first clue to wrap up the first act of the episode. A message written in blood from Mr. Brown Suit’s system that reads...
“Camel toe”. A message that was written by Mr. Brown Suit himself before his soul got sent to the upper room. Yes, folks, this is where the word “toe” in the episode title comes from. Toes as in camel toe. And we’re not talking about an actual camel’s toe but if you know, you know. Also interesting how the kids don’t know what camel toe is and I know that they’re kids and they don’t know crap, how do y’all not know about it? Y’all remember the whole thing with the Charirot doll with a rare defect that got Bronconius’ attention. How did y’all forget about that? But yeah, end of the first act of the episode and we got ourselves an investigation with everyone now named a suspect in the murder of Brown Suit. Setting things up for the episode's second act with everyone now being questioned but before that to start the second act of the episode...
We have Teddy outside of the restaurant and notice the place is closed for the morning. And already, he is becoming impatient over the place not being open. Like... my dude, the day just started and already, you’re starting to create a scene outside in the pouring rain. Out here like a Gen Alpha kid not surviving a few seconds without using their devices. Luckily for the Belchers before leaving the apartment to attend Louise’s murder mystery event at the doll shop, they left a note at the bottom of the notice that was on display on the door with the special hours shown for Teddy to do to pass the time until the Belchers arrive back from the doll shop. With one of the activities that Teddy should do to waste his morning hours being using his gripper. Give his hand a few exercises to pass the time. Yeah, that should keep him busy to pass the time away.
We go back to the doll shop with the murder mystery already in progress with Tina and Gene now entering the interrogation phase with them questioning each doll about the murder with each one having alibis over what they were doing at the same time Mr. Brown Suit was murdered. Funny Eyes was live streaming in his room because he’s a personal trainer, Stiff Arms went out for the night to get some grub with Mr. Jacket. And then comes Mr. Sweater and Mr. Tie, who was having a conversation with each other at the time of the murder with them playing catch up. And this is Mr. Sweater’s place and he did talk to a couple of people, especially when talking to Mr. Tie, the spotlight is now starting to shine over him as if he might have something to do with the murder but that would be jumping to conclusions with any evidence aside from the trophy that was used to murder Mr. Brown Suit.
And it looks like we might be getting to the nitty-gritty of how we got here regarding Mr. Sweater’s situation when talking about the incident that is haunting him rent-free in his head. And it turns out that the incident back in the day had some consequences that is weighing him down to this day. The consequence being Mr. Sweater not being invited to a Halloween party. You can already tell where this is going and the connections between Mr. Sweater and a certain Belcher child who has been acting mopey since the start of the episode. Hell, Bisselbender knows something is up when talking to Bob and Linda when getting a front-row seat to the story and knows where Louise is going with this when having to go through the script that Louise wrote. So, Tina and Gene were about to be this close to cracking the case and having to listen to Mr. Sweater’s story regarding the incident...
Mr. Tie becomes the next person to have his life subscription revoked. It’s like as if the killer doesn’t want the story to go forward when undergoing the investigation. At least there’s another clue now laid out next to the corpse with Gene spotting a tiny piece of paper and we’ll get to that later after a brief check-up on Teddy going into the next scene.
He finishes using his gripper, going up to a thousand grips to pass the time and feel proud of doing the damn thing. And it’s not even 12:30 for the guy, so now, he has to find something to do next. So, he decides to text Bob to have a conversation, not knowing that he’s busy at the moment, only for Teddy to deal with some problems. He can’t grab for shit. He can’t get a hold of his phone because of him using the grabber a thousand times which can cause negative effects to his hands. Good for him to have a strong grip and relieve all stress out of his system but bad because he used too much of the item because he was told by the family through a note that was posted on the door. So uh... big whoops there for the Teds-ter.
We go back to the murder mystery with another clue now picked up following the death of Mr. Tie with a tiny piece of paper from his shoe. And the note reads about the incident that Mr, Shadow was about to talk to Tina and Gene about before getting interrupted by Mr. Tie being killed off. And the note happens to be a newspaper and there’s an article about an incident at a boarding school regarding a teacher who died, Yes, a teacher died from falling out of a building three floors high at the library at the school. The next clue up in this investigation.
This leads Tina and Gene to call up the remaining boys to sit on the couch and question them one by one about the day of the incident and also who’s responsible for killing both Mr. Brown Suit and Mr. Tie. And already, the blame game has already taken shape and everyone pointing their fingers, their inanimate fingers that require movement from either of the siblings, towards Mr. Sweater. All of this is because he invited them to his place and thought he was going to have himself a killing spree to help him get out of dodge. At the end of the first half of the episode, Gene is now the one being impatient, or rather frustrated because he now begins to somewhat connect the dots but more of wanting to let his frustration out over him not getting an invite and break out of character. Mostly because he can’t get the idea of him not being invited to Julian’s party without any given reason. So, just as Gene is about to speak out on his frustration and have to connect the dots on where the story is going from where Louise is trying to compensate for where the plot is going for the story...
Mr. Stiff Arms becomes the next person up to have his life subscription cut short by the killer on the loose to close off the first half of the episode. And a weird way to die for Mr. Stiff Arms because, at one moment, he was sitting on the couch but once the power goes out and comes back on, he somehow dies with the leg of the couch over where his head is. Pretty weird to die as if it’s something coming out... does anyone remember a show, don’t know if most of y’all remember it, called 1000 Ways to Die. Almost feels like that though you’d think that someone sitting on the couch would’ve felt the couch being lifted or someone in the room or the house being strong enough to lift it with a person sitting on the couch as if their body is built by Taco Bell. It’s impossible to even think about it.
Now, going into the second act of the episode and we now have three subjects remaining in the house with all three boys were about ready to point fingers at each other like it’s a Mexican standoff of who is the killer in the house. However, there was one person that they hadn’t brought up and he was here in the house the whole night of the murder, that being the chef. And it looks like the chef got a front-row seat to the whole argument from the three remaining boys as we now begin to enter the flashback portion of the story with the scene of the incident taking place.
This leads us to years ago at the library years ago with the boys in their senior year doing some studying with the teacher named Ms. Bickelbonger supervising the study session. Wearing a pair of pants that happens to feel more snug and tight than she thought when wearing it for the day. More than enough to become a victim of some shit-talking from some of the students, starting with Mr. Jacket and Mr. Funny Eyes who noticed the supposed camel toe on Bickelbonger because of how tight the pants are that she is wearing. Though nearly got themselves into a scuffle because it does feel as if Mr. Jacket heard the shit-talking from Mr. Funny Eyes doesn’t find it funny but rather, offensive and is a millisecond away from pulling out the Will Smith as if it’s the Oscars from two years ago. So as Gene, per Louise’s request, hold both Funny Eyes and Jacket apart...
We go back to check up on Teddy for a bit with him still struggling to pick up his phone after tiring his arms from using his gripper one too many times to keep him busy. Hoping to make contact with him for once this morning to pass the time before the lunch hour hits but alas, he can’t do shit. Oh, he did make contact by trying to make a phone call with him because once again, he’s getting impatient about wanting a burger for the day but of course, going back to the doll house, Bob decides to ignore because he doesn’t want to disrupt Louise’s murder mystery story, especially when getting to the good part. Leaving Teddy hanging, leaving him with a voicemail, and uh... yeah, not looking good for Teddy in this situation. Especially when dealing with a tiring hand from using his gripper.
Turning our attention back to the murder mystery with Gene starting to become upset as it feels like to him that it’s sounding to become personal as the story progresses. As if what happened in the story with the dolls is starting to feel like it was inspired or dis-inspired if that’s even a word on what’s going on as of late. But ends up letting the story keep going as the backstory of the incident comes to fruition. The boys continue to poke fun at Bickelbonger over her camel toe popping up on her thighs that got her attention, making her the joke of the library, if not, the entire school, and once Mr. Jacket, who originally refused to join in to poke fun at Bickelbonker for her camel toe, ends up joining in the laughter. Not a good day for Bickelbonker to have her become the joke of the school because of the camel toe appearance. She tried to quickly adjust her pants to ensure they didn’t become tight enough to remove the camel toe but didn't notice that the window was open. Taking a few steps when adjusting the pants, without even thinking about going to the bathroom... the teacher’s bathroom since it’s an all-boys school and...
Yep. Down goes Bickelbonger. Didn’t even notice that the window was open but ended up falling to her death thanks in part to her not knowing where she was going and kept on hearing laughter from the students. So uh... you could say that the fall might as well be labeled as an accident because of her not knowing that the window was open but you could also say that the ridicule from all this that led up to the teacher’s tragic death may or may not be considered an indirect murder because you have the main guys coming together and agree to keep it to themselves a la the movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer”.
So we got our story from Mr, Jacket about what happened and thus, jumping to conclusions, Mr. Sweater is the killer, which he denies the allegations and brought up the invitation for the event and we already know where this is going regarding the connections to all of this and it’s about Gene’s situation and him upset over him not getting the invitation to Julian’s party. Pretty sure some of y’all when watching the episode know this was heading the moment the murder mystery was taking place throughout the episode. Mr. Sweater continues to deny the allegations... only to be killed off with a beheading, making Mr. Jacket, the person who told everything about what happened, the last person standing or I guess if we were to follow certain tropes, especially in the horror genre, the final boy.
Oh yeah, and the chef turns out to be the killer. Who could’ve seen that coming? Pretty sure some but not most know right away that the chef might be behind this despite that he wasn’t around when the whole thing happened and just left the boys be by playing innocent and also getting a front-row seat to the finger-pointing. The chef is the suspect and he’ll be on his way to be booked in prison... or rather, she. The chef isn't even the chef at all and instead, turns out to be Mr. Sweater’s sister and she was out for blood by taking out the others one by one. Including her brother and her reason for that is because of the invitation situation. And now, ending the third act of the episode and going to the fourth and final act, Gene is now breaking down as if he now thinks this is Louise’s way of saying that she is hiding something regarding what is going on as if she had something to do with Gene not getting the invite and not the various list of things that Gene laid out at the start of the episode.
This is where Bisselbender comes into Louise’s defense to start the final act of the episode and explain everything that Louise was going to say. And we go into flashback mode at the library with Bisselbender walking through the library, having to fill in for Ms. Twitchell as Gene brought up earlier in the episode to donate a kidney, and she took the sixth graders to the library for homeroom, not knowing that the fourth graders also have to go the library and that’s where she spotted Louise staring out of nowhere for no reason as if she read something that left her stunned or something, But apparently, that’s not the case. Louise overhears a conversation with some of the boys, primarily the sixth graders with Gene being a part of the group chat, with Bisselbender also overhearing the conversation when walking up to Louise to see what she was doing.
And much like the story earlier in the episode, this is where the inspiration behind all of this came to be. One of the boys who I guess happened to be the boy in question named Julian poked fun at Bisselbender regarding the appearance of her camel toe and the other boys joined in the fun... all but Gene because she likes Bisselbender. She has no issues with her and respected her since the Christmas performance back in “The Plight Before Christmas”. He doesn’t want to stab her in the back by joining in the fun of poking fun at Bisselbender over her camel toe. This of course leads Julian to disinvite Gene to attend his gathering once Gene leaves them to go use the bathroom. All because he didn’t fall in line and make fun of Bisselbemder and her camel toe. Upsetting Louise with her needing to process all of this and for Bisselbender... well, she was going to tell the boys to not poke fun at her but ended up not doing it as if she doesn’t want Julian to presume that Gene told on him. That and also her not recognizing Louise as Gene’s sister. Besides, these boys were pretty much assholes anyway. But Louise... oh boy, Louise...
This was pretty much, according to herself, a failure on her part. She overheard the conversation and wants to tell Gene about everything about him not getting the invite just for not making fun of Bisselbender. She had numerous chances of her ready to tell Gene about what she heard and that he wasn’t going to get the invite to begin with. Numerous chances and it took until Alex brought it up that led to him questioning how he didn’t get the invitation. And this isn’t a “Drumforgiven” situation where she had to butt in Gene’s fight to “defend his honor”, pretty sure we have long passed that, she wants to keep things civil, and uh... she had numerous chances and she didn’t do the job. And she had to be creative with what she had to say using the dolls at the doll shop. Hence, why she wanted only Tina and Gene to attend and not Bob and Linda but ended up tagging along and hearing everything about what happened. You can’t blame Louise for this one, she just wants to be protective of her big brother.
Going into the two-minute warning and in a snap, it’s all water under the bridge for Gene. Because he thinks that the reason for why he didn’t get the invite to the party is because he thinks he’s wonderful and not because he doesn’t want to poke fun at Bisselbender for her camel toe. Yeah, that’s one way to put it. Aside from that, it’s all water under the bridge and Gene pretty much accepts everything and wants Louise to ask him the next time around rather than missing her shot or going behind her back and picking a fight for him. And that should be the end of all of that and finally got everything settled regarding Gene and I guess Louise had to do it in the most creative way possible. And Louise wants to do it again with this time around being the case of the missing remote, catching the family by surprise and, of course, refusing to give Louise the dollhouse and the set of dolls because of the price tag and shit.
And now, we get to a brief couple of scenes to close the episode and yes, Teddy finally got his food after waiting all morning, currently can’t grab for shit because of using the grabber one too many times. Having Bob to feed Teddy in one hand and cleaning the counter with the other like a baby, Though makes you question how Teddy made it here after losing feeling in his hands. The best possible guess would be Bob having to pick him up from his place rather than driving because again, no feeling in his hands. Of course, you have Tina coming out of the kitchen and dressed up as Freddy Krueger with various barrettes in her hands and once again, we only saw Tina in her costume and not Gene and Louise in theirs. And, of course, ending the episode with the dolls, Mr. Jacket, and Mr. Sweater’s sister, talking as Mr. Sweater’s sister currently serves time behind bars, and uh... yeah, that was an episode to go through for Halloween this year. At least we got one this year, so there’s an upside to that.
Reaction/Thoughts:
So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? First time in two years that we got a Halloween episode and despite the hype that was built with this being a Halloween episode, Loren as the writer, and the return of both Alex (for a bit) and Bisselbender... it was alright. This was an alright episode but not the greatest like we saw with the previous episodes that Loren wrote, At least we have to break away from the emotional and serious tone for once.
I have to admit, the doll murder mystery was creative, and like that Louise has to expand her creative side to make it a show, even if the background behind this was somewhat predictable but it was nice and creative. Nice to have Bisselbender return to the show and glad that she didn’t end up becoming a one-off. The subplot was okay but nothing more than filler with Teddy trying to pass the time for the restaurant to open. And uh... yeah, this was an alright episode. I don’t hate it but it’s not that great either, especially since the episode was written by the man himself. So I’ll give “For Whom the Doll Toes”...
A 7 out of 10. But that’s my opinion and I wanna hear yours in the comments below. We have another Tina episode this upcoming Sunday and it's her and her eighth-grade peers playing Assassin with a slice of processed cheese as the weapon in the fifth episode of Season 15, “Don’t Stop Be-cheesin’”. And if you are wondering why this episode review is short, it’s not because of the episode itself, I have no problem with it. I should’ve brought it up in the socials but your boy is dealing with a fractured arm and I feel like these types of reviews and the short amount of posts dor the live blogs are going to be sticking around until my left arm that is fractured is all healed up. And yes, I did the review with one arm, you’re welcome.
