Number 7 of the Top 12 Countdown of 2025 – Blue Exorcist 青の祓魔師: “The Blue Night”

Do you ever wonder what the day was like when you were born? Pretty sure most of y’all were told that it was mundane and was treated as a normal procedure. While some of y’all had stories on the topic of conversation about the story of how y’all were born in this world. Well, not unless the day you were born was also tied to a cataclysmic event that would scar people for a long while. And that is exactly what it is with number 7 in the Top 12 Countdown. That being Blue Exorcist with “The Blue Night”.

Kind of ironic that it is Christmas Eve at the time of posting, a day before the birthday of one Jesus Christ, and we’re talking about the birth of the son of Satan and his twin brother just days after the Christmas holiday. Blue Exorcist fandom, just be lucky that y’all made it on this list as a technicality, because we really need to mix things up when trying to diversify the countdown. But this season, man. Whether you want to call it Season 5 or the second half of Season 4, even though it is treated as Season 5, was quite the ride for the anime series. Especially following that lore drop in Season 4 regarding a conspiracy within the Order of the True Cross that involved a former lab that house dozens of clones, one used for Lucifer to have a host body, having the big man himself Satan as one of the test subjects of a clone, and the cataclysmic event known as the Blue Night, aka the night both Rin and Yukio were born. And boy, it was something leading up to the big night. And the results… are what you expect. Cataclysmic.

And this right as the would-be mother and the person who is the center of this origin story of a season, Yuri Egin, is going into labor from the end of the previous episode. Well, two episodes ago, because the one before this was checking on how the others were doing in the present timeline, but it was leading up to this. And the Order was more than ready for this to happen since Yuri was pregnant with Satan’s twin kids. Fearing that one or two kids would inherit uncontrollable powers once they leave the womb. Yukio was the normal one out of the bunch. Rin, on the other hand, is a handful.

You could say that the Blue Night does bear comparisons to the Nine-Tails incident in Naruto. Which it pretty much is. It happened during the nighttime hours, both of our protagonists were born on the night of the event, death, and everywhere due to things out of their control, and the cherry on top, both their moms died a while after giving birth. Not right away, but an hour or two to do just that. The key difference between the two is the tone. Along with the lighting being used.

Whether it’s at the epicenter where the death and destruction are occurring inside the building or around Japan, when seeing a few familiar faces experiencing what was happening, that is unusual and out of their control. Whether it’s a young Lightning noticing what was going on within the building of the True Cross or Neuhaus losing an eye or down in Kyoto by the temple, where it felt the brunt of it all, with some of the members being burned alive by the blue flames and/or being possessed. This pretty much tells you that the Blue Night is no freaking joke. This has been built leading up to this moment, and boy, did it deliver.

Did I mention that the whole thing was out of the Order’s control when dealing with a newborn Rin going freaking haywire the moment he was conceived? Oh yeah, it was a total disaster for the Order when trying to contain Rin and possibly kill him as well, since he is Satan’s spawn and has the most amount of power that he can’t control. Out here like it’s pest control gone wrong when dealing with a rat that knows how to outsmart an exterminator. Going out like punch bitches no matter how they try to contain the situation.

Luckily enough, here comes Fujimoto to step up to the plate to contain everything going with the Kurikara in tow that he had to take from the temple not too long ago, as if he is prepared for the event, something like this would happen. And is ready to go on the offensive to contain a newborn Rin, which almost sounds like he is set to kill him. Much to Yuri’s dismay, because despite being a demon baby going through demon timing, no pun intended, that is her kid. And for Yuri’s sake, Fujimoto is pretty sure he can’t make any promises as he prepares to do the job.

Luckily for her, it is not a full-on extermination as if Fujimoto is dead set on taking out a newborn Rin because, otherwise, present-day Rin, who is observing this firsthand when time-traveling with Mephisto, would not be here. It’s more of having to seal the blue flames into the blade by pressing the blade on the heart for the sealing to take place, all this while not having to kill the newborn, per Yuri’s request, before handing over Rin to her once knocked out. Free from the blue flames into the sword before his teenage years, once the sword is passed on to him by Fujimoto, right before he died while trying to get Satan out of his body at the start of the series.

But it looks like the whole event ain’t done just yet, right as Yuri was handed Rin to be with her alongside Yukio. Because here comes the deadbeat baby daddy himself, Satan, deciding to pay a visit to cap off the episode that was “The Blue Night”. Though you could say that the next episode after that was at the same level as this one, and I know that it should be mashed into one for this spot in the countdown, but might as well leave it as it is for right now. It is the Christmas season at the time of posting, so leave me be. And there better be a Season 6 because the series, I'm going to come out to say it, is pretty much at its peak.

But yeah, it was quite the episode when going through this season of Blue Exorcist earlier this year. A lot of stuff that just transpired leading up to the moment when the Blue Night happened, and for all hell to break loose. Once again, you could make comparisons to the Nine-Tails incident in Naruto as the only moment in an anime to come up with when it comes to this particular situation, the moment both Rin and Yukio were born, but the tone and the use of lighting, or lack thereof, make it a dark setting since it was setting up to be a moment that was teased throughout the series, mainly the first and second season, along with the conspiracy side story within the Order in Season 4, it was interesting to see it being built up leading up to this exact moment for this episode. And also the next one after that to close the chapter on the Blue Night fiasco. Even if it resulted in Yuri having to die, and for Fujimoto to step up to the plate to be Rin and Yukio’s guardian. But other than that, not a lot to say, but it was an interesting episode. Besides, it was the anime entry of the year, and it took seven spots to get here. Oh, if only you guys had just won the voting tournament a few weeks ago.
