Two months. Two long grueling months since we last saw a Bob’s Burgers episode. I mean, we didn’t escape the hellhole known as the year 2020, witnessed a potential coup over at the Capitol, getting a new president sworn in, having to deal with Tom Brady getting another super bowl ring, this time with another team in the Buccaneers, and a Texas-sized winter storm fucking everyone from left to right that has people thinking that we haven’t really left 2020 and feels more like 2020 version 2 but here we are...here we are, the first episode of the new year. 2021...two months since Christmas. And a Valentine’s Day episode would be the one to kick things off for the spring semester of the burger season. And look at that, we’re doing better than the education system, ain’t that some shit.
In this week’s Valentine’s Day, even though by the time this review is out, it won’t be the holiday anymore, episode of Bob’s Burgers, so much for Bob and Linda’s Valentine’s Day plans as they have to host a dinner for each and every couple in town for the big night as Tina attends Tammy’s anti-Valentine’s Day party...being Tina, being around with some boys despite being an event where you can tell Cupid to go fuck off in my spoilerific review of the eleventh episode of Season 11 of the show, titled “Romancing the Beef”.
Ah, Valentine’s Day, the most romantic day of the calendar for almost 80-90% of the Earth’s population being together whether being either over at the restaurant and enjoy a dinner party or an anti-Valentine’s Day party that turns out to be a matchmaking event because it was hosted by a thirsty motherfucker like Tammy. Yeah, so the first episode of 2021, being a Valentine’s Day episode to start the new year off...being a month and one week off the scheduling because fuck us, am I right? That’s not the point, the point is, it’s a good episode, not gonna lie here or there. Sure, there were some issues along the way throughout the duration of the episode from either plot...well, the subplot of the episode being somewhat predictable once the seeds were planted into the pot, the rest was actually enjoyable, to say the least with Bob and Linda, with the help of Louise, Gene, and Teddy, to host a Valentine’s night dinner that somehow turned into a full house. Though there were some surprising elements when it comes to the episode, mostly with Hugo having a date. Hugo...someone who is upset for years, if not, decades, over Linda dumping him to be Bob while they were engaged. And him finding someone, with the help from his mother, it was something to look upon. Though the subplot with Tina...yeah, you could say predictable, but it can be enjoyable as the night drags on with her trying to be that one person who tries to follow the lingo of the event, not knowing the real details of the party. That being said, it’s time to fly over and carry Cupid’s arrow onto this episode, this is “Romancing the Beef”.
Starting off the episode with Linda reading a card that Bob made for the holiday with them telling the kids what they’re doing for this year’s Valentine’s Day with them telling the things that they like about each other in card form. Which is apparently cute on what they’re doing with them writing each other cards like it’s grade school all over again, but almost feels like they have some help from the kids when it comes to the whole thing as a little project leading up to the big holiday, which is, of course, Valentine’s Day. But according to Linda, they were supposed to finish the whole thing leading to Valentine’s Day, but other stuff decided to barge on by to affect what they’re doing...mostly daily routines being either working at the restaurant or feeding the kids. Thus, ending up falling short for the whole project with Valentine’s Day...well, finally here.
Then, of course, we get the seeds planted for the upcoming subplot concerning Tina and her misadventure on Valentine’s Day with her invited to an anti-Valentine’s Day party, where you have a group of people just there to Thus, setting up the seeds on the episode garden for the subplot of the episode with Tina ready to go to Tammy’s anti-Valentine’s Day party, which is a party where people celebrate the hatred of the holiday. Though props to Linda on why Tina would go to an event like that and may have Jimmy Jr’s name written all over. Apparently, he’s currently attending an overnight wrestling meet out of town and told him what to do to pass the time for Valentine’s Day without having him around before putting on his headphones and head off. Thus...
To the school with Tammy and Jocelyn announcing the party for Valentine’s Day and why the holiday is stupid and whatnot. With Tina using the event over the whole Jimmy Jr being over at the wrestling meet thing to get into the social gathering. Though Tammy won’t let that slide but ending up getting in because of Bob’s burgers as a catering tool in order to get into the event. Which is pretty much what is each of the members of the Belchers' "get to tool" when it comes to wanting to enter an event that they’re not invited to. I mean, what is this, the second time that Tina has to come to a party, hosted by Tammy, with the use of her father’s food as a bypass like it’s a goddamn tag on your car while driving on a tollway? I mean, she did that back in “Mazel Tina” when she didn’t get the invite to her bat mitzvah and have to use the restaurant to serve as catering. Here we go, this time with Tina just giving it to them for her to enter the party. Though, sure, wanting to go to a party where there will be no romance involved when upon seeing a random boy walking by. And probably using the event to be around with guys despite hating on the holiday.
And yeah, sure Tammy. You hosting a party to take a dump on Valentine’s Day just because you hate the holiday? Not because you only saying that because you don’t have a boy toy of your own to celebrate with. Yeah, let’s go with that, Jan...I mean, Tammy. Let’s go with that. And the subplot of the episode doesn’t continue until the second act of the episode. The second act, like that long for things to finally get into gear when it comes to Tina’s little subplot when attending the party.
Once the day hits with Bob and Linda doing their work with the stuff for the restaurant, well...mostly Linda doing the work with Bob trying to work on his card with Teddy wanting to at least help out for not just Bob, but also Linda when it comes to finishing up the card project for each other and hoping to give it to each other once the night hits. Nothing said helping out like someone who appears in the restaurant every fucking day like a drunk sitting in the bar while being intoxicated following a night out of town. Okay, not really, but can you blame the guy for trying to help the family out?
Of course, while that is happening, you have Bob noticing that Jimmy Pesto is setting up shop for the Valentine’s Day dinner rush with him setting up the decorations and whatnot for what to expect for tonight before entering the restaurant with Trev and wanting to one-up Bob over the whole thing for Valentine’s Day. Yeah...so uh, remember in the last episode where you have Jimmy Pesto, in the most surprising thing possible, being nice to Bob in giving him a spot in catering the yacht parade despite that Bob thinks that he was going to pants him in front of the crowd? Yeah, reset button at its finest. You thought that they were going to put aside their differences? Hoping for this little rivalry to come to a close? But it didn’t. It didn’t and we’ve been told to go fuck ourselves. Because the rules of sitcom said so.
Once both Jimmy and Trev leaves the place, here comes Louise to decide to one-up the fucker by preparing to host a Valentine’s Day dinner rush themselves to possibly rival Jimmy Pesto on the night of the important dinner rush of the season that is Valentine’s Day and it looks like both Bob and Linda have no other choice but to follow what Louise is planning, despite knowing how small in capacity the restaurant is but that won’t stop the Belchers and Teddy for them to redecorate the whole place into a fancy restaurant for one night and for each and every member of the family to give their job position when getting ready to host the event. Well, minus Tina because she has to head out to Tammy’s anti-Valentine’s Day get-together. You have Louise and Gene passing out flyers with Louise writing what appears to be napkins and Gene using ketchup as lipstick and passing it out to everyone across town, Bob, Linda, and Teddy setting up shop by moving the booths and tables around to the middle of the area. Of course, you have Tina ready to dress up for the occasion with her throwing out a shirt with hearts printed on it and goes for the black shirt instead before putting the hearts shirt back to the hanger before heading out to the party with a bag of burgers to Tammy’s place to set up her subplot of the episode while Teddy putting on the covers covering the restaurant’s logo when renaming it for the only one night for the dinner rush as the name, “Urge”. Causing nothing said celebrating Valentine’s Day like a restaurant with somewhat of an edgy name like “Urge” to serve the dinner crowd on Valentine’s Day.
And of course, the finishing touch, the Belchers dressing all fancy with Bob dressed up as a full-on chef working at an important restaurant, no offense to the actual restaurant that sells burgers by the shore. Linda as the waitress and ready to serve the customers. Speaking of serving, you have Louise as the flower girl and passing out the roses for a dollar each for each table. And then, of course, you have Gene dressed up as Cupid and using Bob’s shirt as a diaper. Though it looks like Teddy wants to stay put after helping the family out. Would say because he wants to help the family out, but feels more like he’s only going to be there because...well...he has to now because he’s the main character now. So get used to it. Of course, the wait for the first customer to arrive only took a few moments we have ourselves a full house to serve on Valentine’s Day and with that, Urge, the restaurant formerly known as Bob’s Burgers for a night, is now open for business.
And it’s a full house indeed with the restaurant serving more customers on Valentine’s Day than the regular 364 days of the year, that’s uh...can’t tell if that’s either an improvement or a concern for the Belchers when it comes to the number of customers to pack an entire first-floor building? Either way, looks like business is booming for the Belchers on Valentine’s Day, courtesy of Louise, with Bob manning the grill and talk to his food, this time being a piece of steak ready to be put on the grill. Linda being both the hostess and the waitress and serving everyone from each table...despite that we have two couples for each table looking like they’re heading towards a rocky island called the Island of Relationship Turmoil. Though here comes Louise to at least patch things up with her passing out the roses for each table with Gene serving as entertainment and playing on his handheld keyboard. And despite Gene’s little song on the signing side of things, it looks like things are really going well for the Belchers and for the restaurant. A packed house the likes they have never seen in like...ever. Making some money when it comes to the food and the roses that Louise passes out for each table and booth. It feels like they’re becoming unstoppable and it’s like nothing can stop them now.
Well...until Hugo enters the restaurant and sees a crowded scene in the restaurant with Bob worrying that he’s going to give out his usual surprise inspection in hopes to shut the restaurant down and at the worst timing possible, just as business was booming and the family a whole lotta money. But Hugo is not here for that. And you think he might, think again because he’s only here as a customer because he got himself a date. Yeah, this salty motherfucker who was upset for decades over Linda bailing out to be with Bob just as they were engaged, finally got a date. He finally got one. And you may have to thank his mother for setting things up which...I can’t tell if you want to be happy over that or the fact that his own mother set things up seems like...the saddest thing to ever witness. But regardless of that, at least Hugo finally got someone as he now waits for her arrival at the restaurant. Though Bob still thinks that he’s playing health inspector in disguise and have to make sure he doesn’t do that by creating various distractions and hoping for his date to arrive.
But while is that is happening, being Hugo waiting for his date to arrive, it’s business as usual when it comes to serving a full house...especially with Bob serving some stuff to the happy couple, in which the couple thinks that Bob is hitting on them as he continues to serve. I mean, c’mon Bob, there’s no shame in liking the same gender...well despite that you’re already married and all...how the fuck is Bob not canonically bi? No seriously, what the fuck?! I mean, fucker said in “Turkey in a Can” that he’s mostly straight, being either bisexual or bi-curious, when upon meeting with the Butcher like multiple times. Feeling the touch of one of the employees when training for the upcoming battle against the manufacture who sold Bob the busted-up toy helicopter. Just to name a few. I mean, in The Great North, we got a family member who is in the LGBT community in Ham Tobin, so why not Bob coming out? We’re waiting for that, Bouchard. You know it. The fans know it. Everyone and their mother who haven’t watched the show knows it.
Back to the Hugo situation with him still waiting on his date to arrive upon countless minutes, possibly hours of waiting around and sending her texts. Thinking that she’s not coming and that’s where the health inspecting comes into play with Hugo noticing that the restaurant is over the capacity needed and even threatens the fire department to shut the place down. At least it’s nothing like a super spreader event because that would be bad for everyone what is pretty much a death trap to everyone. Remember to wear your masks, folks...even if you have gotten your vaccination. Still gotta wear a mask. Just as Hugo is preparing to call the fire department and shut this dog and pony show, the Belchers decided to lie to the guy and say that his date is here at the restaurant, just using the employee bathroom and thinks that she may have the runs over the whole thing. And Hugo bought it. He bought the whole thing and accepted it, just to put his motherfucking phone back down. Great save there, Belchers. Great save. Would be a shame that a certain Belcher who works on the whole charade to fuck things up. And if you think that dealing with Hugo was bad enough for the Belchers on this Valentine’s Day eve...
Here come Jimmy Pesto and Trev entering the restaurant and witness a crowded restaurant full of couples beyond couples, table after table, and if you think that Jimmy’s only here to bring Bob down just as he was having the time of his life during the Valentine’s Day dinner rush...he flats out saying that he’s proud of him for pulling it off, even though that was Louise’s idea from the start...you’re waiting for the joke, are you? Yeah, there’s no joke. Jimmy Pesto is proud of Bob doing the work on Valentine’s Day and you could say that in a sarcastic manner, and I wish that were true and all...but nope, just flat out saying like if he wants to vomit. Never to imagine upon hearing that coming from someone that dick-ish like Jimmy Pesto to congratulate Bob for what’s he doing. Like bro, last I checked, this isn’t 2020 anymore. Stop with the crazy? That’s behind us now. Does the reset button means nothing to you anymore?! You think that what happened in the last episode would be nothing more than a memory to never be brought up again. But nope, have the fucker to be proud of his rival for once. It’s a Valentine’s Day miracle, folks. And I think we witnessed history because of that. What kind of genjutsu is this, fam? What is this?
Teddy overlapped his stay at the restaurant with a bill that is so high up, that the company behind the grids may have to shut the whole thing down and place millions, upon millions to go in the dark...thanks a lot, ERCOT. With Bob and Linda enjoying the Valentine’s Day dinner rush but somewhat upset over the fact they didn’t even get to enjoy their Valentine’s Day. Something that they have been looking forward to, but because of what Jimmy Pesto was doing and have Louise to have her idea to come to life, it’s like they don’t even have the time to celebrate Valentine’s Day for just of them of them. I mean, yeah, there’s always next year, but it’s a shame that they didn’t even celebrate it this year because of the dinner rush. At least they’re making money, there has to be a silver lining. Sure, for supporting the family and all, but...putting it out there. Just putting it out there with all that money. Maybe do a little do-over for the holiday even though it’s not Valentine’s Day anymore. That be something.
Of course, back to the Hugo situation we go with Hugo now wanting to check up on his date that he believes to be taking a dump and want to head over to the employee bathroom with the Belchers trying to do their best to prevent Hugo from finding out that she’s not there, so that he doesn’t call the fire marshal to shut everything down in a peg. And they did try to prevent Hugo from entering the bathroom. Mostly because going into the bathroom, especially if the place only has one bathroom like it’s a gas station in rural areas when driving through the freeway, next to a Subway restaurant and a Dollar General, and those motherfuckers are everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE, and checking on your date to come out...yeah, despite being that there’s only one bathroom, best that you don’t bother your date, just because you’re being impatient. And Hugo would agree to the idea and head back to the table, but...
Gene ends up ruining stuff with him entering the employee bathroom with no one inside there and not to mention, the door being unlocked. That caused the whole “prevent Hugo from shutting the place down” issue to come into the dumps with Hugo upset over the fact that his date has not shown up and that he waited at the table and looking like a total fool of himself. Lowering his optimism meter to the levels of the Houston Texans’ chances of having a winning season for the next year. And nothing would cheer him up from that little issue regarding his date being MIA for the night, and sadly Ron’s not around to at least patch things up, so that leaves the next thing for him to cheer himself up for the night...and that is to order Bob to shut the place down for violating capacity rules. There it is. There’s the Hugo that we all know.
All that hard work and all it took to wrap the party up early was a salty blond short man who is upset over the fact that his date didn’t even arrive at the scene with Bob announcing to the crowd that the place is being shut down for violation quotas. Telling them that it’s not a fancy restaurant, but more of your run-of-the-mill burger restaurant by the shore. And also not to mention, not having the Valentine’s Day that both he and Linda would have enjoyed and had the night to themselves. Thus, having that scene of them telling each other about the stuff they like about...well, each other. And to the crowd of all the group of people as the restaurant is shutting down. Look at that, looks like everyone is getting both a dinner and a show for the dinner rush. Even Tina got a glimpse when upon coming back to the restaurant from attending Tammy’s party, and we’ll get to that later on, and seems to be enjoying it despite that the place is now being shut down for going over the capacity and because Hugo was upset over his date not showing up...until...
Hugo’s date finally arrived at the scene and at the last minute of the episode no doubt. And I gotta say, think Hugo finally got his woman after years of being a salty motherfucker over Linda leaving him. With his date, Cheryl, telling Hugo the reason why she didn’t show up sooner is that she went to the place with the same name, just...ended up at Bog Harbor and the place with the same name over there, guess what? It’s a sex shop. Did I mention that kids watch the show? Could possibly explain why I see posts on Tumblr and Reddit and tweets on Twitter over how the show is going “downhill” and being “kid-friendly” that I’ve been scrolling through. Other than that, Cheryl, Hugo’s date, made it to the restaurant and with that note, looks like the place will not be shutting down, and for the Belchers, a long and busy night ahead for everyone to cater everyone to their needs on this loveliest of days...with everyone now wanting hamburgers now instead of steak, closing out the episode with Bob ready to turn the steak into ground beef for the patties. Hey, if you can’t afford enough money to go to a fancy restaurant, nothing wrong with going to a fast food joint as a last resort to grab a bite to eat, even on Valentine’s Day. And that’s what the Belchers are doing to continue the dinner rush off-camera. Hugo’s new flame ain’t coming back, huh? Gonna end up as a one-off? Damn shame. I mean, it’s like with Rosa after “Can’t Buy Me Math”. You give my boy Darryl a love interest and you gotta do something dirty like not having her returning. And it looks like the same might be happening to Hugo. Yeah.
Onto the subplot we go, well, already in progress following the first act of the episode being the seeds being planted when it comes to the whole Tina attending Tammy’s anti-Valentine’s Day party storyline with her finally arriving at the party...which doesn’t feel more like a party, but more of a social get together knowing how small the people who attended the event with Tammy welcoming everyone to the event by doing the first thing on the list for the whole event, which is the oath to pledge that they will never fall in love and that you should probably tell anyone who is in a relationship to fuck off. Okay, don’t know about the second one but it’s pretty much them swearing to hate on the holiday before seeing Tammy’s parents heading out to the movie theater, which you have the two parents planning on going to see different movies. Don’t know if that’s something to be concerned about regarding the status with Tammy’s parents. But that’s something that will never be touched upon as the rest of the group enjoy their so-called “party” with Tina now have to play the role of blending in with the crowd without crushing on any of the guys in the social circle.
And apparently, you think that this subplot would be utterly predictable to the core because it’s a Valentine’s Day episode...that aired the week after the holiday because of a rain delay over at a racetrack in Florida for a sport that no one even watches that we waited for two months...two fucking months since we last saw the show only for Canada to get it first while we here in the states had to be screwed over, while yours truly had to deal with a fucking winter storm that crippled the goddamn state, leaving me in the dark for almost 24 hours while temperatures dip down to what is pretty much the same temperature as Walt Disney’s frozen head, gotten pummeled by two winter storms (one of which missed), dealt with low water pressure and a water boil notice (at the time of the posting, no longer an issue), and to top it all off, an internet outage (no longer an issue as well) as the icing of the cake where all kinds of shit was the ingredient that resembles last week...and you think that the holiday that is centered around love, have the hopeless romantic, like Tina here, would have a hard time trying to blend in with the crowd and succumb to the holiday in a room where everyone despises it the core. And while yes, she did try her best to do all of that...
You have Tammy here putting on some music to set the mood, except that mood happened to be of “hooking up like it’s fishing at the lake” than “set every heart décor on fire” type of mood with Tammy putting on the music on her phone and dimming the lights. With Tina thinking that something is up with the party that she threw because she thinks that this doesn’t feel like an anti-Valentine’s Day party. This feels more like if Tinder were an actual place and event for one night. I mean, fuck, Tammy was putting on some lipstick before transitioning back over to the restaurant. Tina’s not going to let that slide and be that one partygoer who takes things seriously. But you think that’s going to stop Tammy and the others from following suit? Eh...I think we know all where this is going.
Just as Tina was washing her face and trying not to fall into pressure courtesy of St. Valentine while attending the party that was supposed to be about hating the holiday, you have her getting out of the bathroom and sees Tammy ready to make out with a random guy with Tina stopping her and try to follow along on what the invite said. But...yeah, this isn’t an anti-Valentine’s Day party where you can curb stomp the holiday, but instead, it’s pretty much a matchmaking event for anyone who hasn’t even found a Valentine and used their hatred for the holiday as some sort of leeway. It’s actually almost too good for a marketing ploy when it comes to the holiday for people who are single. That and also for the people, who are teenagers mind you, letting their hormones do all the talking with Tammy taking that one boy to the closet and play seven minutes in heaven. Yeah, good luck if we end up getting an episode with the kids in health class and learn about the body and how it changes. The internet might have a field day over the idea.
Tina tried her best to make the anti-Valentine’s Day party into the most literal way possible when upon seeing everyone about to make out with her playing defense while playing a game of basketball at the park like...remember that commercial with a basketball player blocking shots from people in...I think an office building and I think it was Geico if you remember that ad? That’s pretty much what Tina is doing to make sure the “anti-Valentine’s Day” party follows what the invitation said, but that won’t get anyone to who is ready to pucker up to un-pucker with their partner for the whole event.
Thus, leading to her being exhausted and sat down on the couch and upon meeting with the other person, named Austin, who doesn’t like the holiday...mostly being the only partygoer who does not have a partner like it’s a game of dodgeball and no one even picks in PE class on dodgeball day. The two team up in trying to get into the spirit of hating on the holiday like using music to drown out the atmosphere, which leads to them almost making out and probably make a certain pairing when it comes to the Tina train upset and ready to create their version of an insurrection once the pandemic blows over. But then given a sigh of relief when the two come to their senses and decided to make a break for it. I.E. getting the fuck out of the house while they still can. Trying to find an exit but ending up going through closet after closet with each of the partygoers having their hormones shooting for the stars like it’s a rocket launch and their brain is pretty much mission control.
Luckily, both Tina and Austin did escape without making any romantic contact as they finally made it to the intersection where they part ways for the night with Tina somewhat trying to make a move on Austin despite that they made their escape because of the atmosphere of the house and how things really went rock bottom when it comes to hosting an event that is all things hatred about the holiday, only for things to take a complete 180 turn under Tammy’s command. All we know is that the subplot is pretty much it for both Tina and Austin with Tina almost ready to show off her romantic affection for the guy because...well, it’s a random guy that was captured in Tina’s boy-dar during the whole mess, even though Austin, although he’s not in the likes of oblivious like showing no signs of romantic affection because he did almost kissed Tina, doesn’t like the holiday as a whole and not because he’s currently single at the moment. Tina was ready for the hug but just to prove that she gets into the hating the holiday spirit, decided to just give it a talk and have both her and Austin to go their separate ways...oh, you thought we’re going to end this review with that? Bitch, I think we’re all surely mistaken that this is a Valentine’s Day episode, well it aired a week late from its original American date, thanks a lot Daytona, and if there’s a Valentine’s Day episode and with Tina, either being in the focus or in the sidelines...gotta throw in that sweet, sweet fanservice.
The fanservice being once Tina and Austin part ways for the night, she gets a text message from the emergency flip phone, it’s 2021, c’mon, courtesy of Jimmy Jr, who is out of town for the overnight wrestling meet and decided to say that it’s the right time for him to send a Valentine’s Day message via text because it’s been like...what? Almost a year or two since we last have a Tina and Jimmy Jr moment? Something to please the shippers while hoping to not have a potential coup d’état to happen once the coronavirus blows over. But Tina takes that as a win for this Valentine’s Day for this season and reply back before heading back to the restaurant, in time for Hugo orders Bob to shut things down and reopens with the 10 things from Bob and Linda and Hugo’s date, Cheryl, makes an entrance. A Tina and Jimmy Jr romantic interaction to start off the year after not having it throughout the year and the start of the pandemic...can’t tell if it’s a sign that either we’re returning back to normalcy? Or probably the start of the apocalypse to doom us all with a Tina pairing war ready to make things ugly that it reaches nuclear level? Yes. The choice is yes. Oh, may God help us all in what could be a very long year ahead.
Reaction/Thoughts:
So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? After a two-month break since the Christmas episode, a Super Bowl, and FOX thinking that it’s a good idea to pander to the NASCAR fans rather than the fans of animated sitcoms and not air it to their secondary channels over college basketball and a Mexican soccer league game, it’s a good episode and probably worth the wait for the next installment of the series. And of course, having a Valentine’s Day episode to kick off the new year despite only being February.
And honestly, both plots of the episode aren’t that bad. Sure, there are some holes in the wall with the subplot with Tina attending the anti-Valentine’s Day party that turned out to be a matchmaking event has some holes with the main plot with the Belchers opening the restaurant has a few at its side of the aisle, but it didn’t ruin the enjoyment out of it. Probably a good way to start off the 2021 season with an enjoyable episode that was worth the two-month wait.
The main plot was, like I said, enjoyable with the Belchers opening the restaurant and taking Louise’s idea to serve the Valentine’s Day dinner rush though...of course, it has to be caused by what Jimmy Pesto was doing to serve the dinner rush over at his restaurant and back to the same old, same old when it comes to the whole rivalry/hatred between both Bob and Jimmy following the events of “Better Off Sled”. But the rest was enjoyable though was expected that the whole burger restaurant turns into a fancy restaurant for the holiday rush wasn’t going to last long. Especially with Hugo entering the stage and Bob being somewhat concerned that Hugo would throw a surprise inspection at the worst possible time, just as the family is making huge bucks despite being over the capacity. Though expected that Hugo would have Bob to shut the place down when his date didn’t show up before the last minute of the episode.
Though the episode did have some surprising moments to the fact that we all thought that 2020 was long gone but decided to stick around for another go when it comes to the development, especially to the two people that we did not expect to get that treatment. First off, Jimmy Pesto. We all suspect that once “Better Off Sled” blows over with Jimmy, of all people, being nice to Bob when giving him a spot in catering for the yacht parade despite Bob being paranoid that Jimmy might pants him in front of everyone just like what he did with Trev at the start of that episode. Onto this week’s episode, back to square one. But...in the most surprising matter, when both Jimmy and Trev enter a packed restaurant, you thought that Jimmy would like to ruin the moment just as the Belchers are gaining ground for the Valentine’s Day dinner rush. But no...he flat out says that he is proud of how Bob pulled it off, even though it was Louise’s idea to open up, but to the point that Jimmy Pesto, of all people, being proud of what Bob did and feels like he wanted to throw up, yeah...it feels like 2020 has still had never left us when it comes to the Jimmy Pesto development train. But I wouldn’t count on that, it’s a new year and we’re going to be back to square one soon enough.
The other surprising moment of the episode comes in the likes of Hugo. And that when he enters the restaurant with Bob thinking that he might do another surprise inspection and at the worst possible timing, just as the momentum was rising for the Belchers with the Valentine’s Day dinner rush, but he’s not here for that to play health inspector, though there are some few instances leading up to the final minutes of the episode, the most surprising is that Hugo got a date for the dinner rush, in which he waited throughout the duration of the episode until the end. And the reason why I said it’s surprising it’s because...well...it’s Hugo. This is the guy who, for decades, being a salty motherfucker over Linda leaving him, just days before getting married, to be with Bob and got so upset that he keeps on pulling out surprise inspections in his many attempts to shut the place down. And now this week, we have him with a different woman, who was set up by his mom. Sad, yes, but it was surprising to see the guy moving on from Linda and having to see his date at the end of the episode, I bet those two would get along just fine...why am I lying to myself? Of course, she ain’t coming back. Just like with the others.
The subplot, yeah, it was predictable when it comes to the outcome of the party that Tammy threw to celebrate the hatred of the holiday, only to turn it into a matchmaking event and a super spreader event when it comes to the hormones. But at least it’s not too much when it comes to the predictability factor. Could be worse, at least it’s not like the original idea of the subplot was Tina attending a party that happened to be an anti-Valentine’s Day party and she ends up not blending in very well. That’s not the case and instead, it’s Tammy who decided to do a complete 180 with the whole event. Causing both Tina and Austin to make a break for it. And they did and decided to head off for the night and of course, we have the Jimmy Jr text message scene to close out the subplot. Of course, it ain’t a Valentine’s Day episode with Tina in the captain’s helm like catering the Tina/Jimmy Jr shippers something without fearing of a possible overthrow once the quarantine blows over with Jimmy Jr sending Tina a text message and wishing her a happy Valentine’s Day. Let’s just say...the pairing debate with Tina...it’s gonna get ugly as the show drags on. Like mad uglies. Like total virtual bloodshed. I mean, who knows how long the show will continue on, just had to put it out there...pretty much putting it there as a stern warning on what’s to come with the fandom. But that’s just me, your friendly neighborhood Spider-man...minus, the Spider-man part. Don’t know about the term “friendly” though.
So final thoughts, this was worth the two-months and a week wait to get some content and I enjoyed the episode. Despite having some holes on the walls, this was an interesting episode to kick off the new year, despite that we’re about to enter March in a few weeks...already nearing March, good googly moogly, and yeah...this was an interesting episode to start off the new year with a Valentine’s Day episode to start things off. I’ll give “Romancing the Beef”...
