Onto the final weeks of the show’s tenth season and of course, it can’t be a season of Bob’s Burgers without having the kids telling their stories because apparently, we need to have it every season now. Well except for Season 8 since that season did not have a kids story telling episode. And it looks like this week’s episode might as well do that. Might as well be a regular occurrence for the show for the time being until the end of time itself. Or in this case until the show decided to jump the shark, which is like...any day now.
In this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, when Teddy falls in the dumps following a bad job he did, the Belcher kids decided to help cheer him up in the form of stories. That’s right folks, it’s another installment of the kids tell them all episode with them telling their stories to help cheer Teddy up in the nineteenth episode of Season 10, titled “The Handyman Can”.
It’s the sixth time where we have an episode that have the kids telling their stories when it comes to certain situations, whether if it’s for open house at school or trying to cheer Gayle up or even possibly trying to stop an argument and also trying to go lightly over a broken bed, this story telling episode was alright. It was alright despite some flaws in the way. But it was an alright episode. I mean yeah, this episode being another installment of the Belcher kids telling their stories was pretty much there in the beginning, all the way to when the script cover was out think it was last year, and look at that, we got one for this episode. Of course, with these types of episodes, meaning that the review here will be separated by three sections, one for each Belcher kid who is telling the story. It was Louise. Louise’s story is pretty much the best one out of the three. Good luck changing my mind because I may going to ignore any criticism coming from y’all. But all and all, this was an alright episode for a kids tell them all episode and that being said, it’s time for the review since we’re now less than three episodes left in the season, this is “The Handyman Can”.
Starting off the episode with the kids messing around with both Tina and Louise putting rags onto Gene and pretending to have fake boobs with Bob coming in with an ice pack on his hand and pressing it on his head. Don’t worry guys, he’s not suffering from like a concussion or probably get something that might have him to get CTE. Just to note that CTE is of course, never funny. Apparently Bob only got hit in the head due to a flickering light bulb in the freezer when trying to get some stuff out but keeps on hitting his head at the shelf whenever the bulb decided to just pull the plug, thus leading to Bob having an ice pack on his head to heal his head and probably not cause any swelling. Of course, Bob’s little injury lured in Jimmy Pesto at the window and brought in his usual taunting before exiting stage left for the rest of the episode with Bob not being good at coming up with some one ups. And by light bulb, yeah, it looks like it has something to do with circuit and wiring that pretty much powers the bulb. Not like it’s going to like to have the power at the building to have a circuit break and probably cause the place to have a mini power outage, and sadly I don’t know even know anything about everything electrical or everyone hardware. Let’s just leave it to the experts the next time you have an issue with why a plug in your living room decided to stop working when trying to plug in your fragrance.
Luckily for Bob, Teddy comes into the picture though not in a very happy mood when coming into the restaurant. And mostly with Teddy, it’s either him in a happy mood or going the neutral route and pretty much kick a plot that would be pretty much typical, if not mediocre. But this time around for this episode, that is not the case. Teddy’s upset over his previous work appointment as a handyman as he tells the Belchers what happened. He told them about his previous appointment with Reggie with him working on the gazebo by installing a ceiling fan which...a ceiling fan...on a gazebo. I don’t know if that’s going to work when dealing with how the outdoor air feel when it comes to how hot it is. That and the fears of stuff like napkins and paper plates being blown away, that’s also something. Bit of a bitch when dealing with that. And wind, let’s not forget wind. So Teddy’s upset over the idea of installing the ceiling fan into the gazebo under Reggie’s request, not because it was dumb, but because once the job is done and for him to host a small gathering and for Reggie to test it out for himself, there was an issue with the circuit, which resulted in that to have a short and to have the gazebo to burn to the ground. Though no one got hurt, which is good, but Teddy felt upset like he didn’t expect the circuit he installed to have a mishap and probably have people in harm’s way. It’s like being good at cooking, especially being locked down during this pandemic, and you make really good food until that one unfaithful moment and day where you make a dish and somehow, there was a misstep that pretty much almost caused the consumer to almost have a one way ticket to a graveyard. Not saying that it’s something like the yips like what Bob encountered last season, that was all Teddy for breaking his concentration. This is pretty much Teddy questioning himself whether if he wants to continue doing the handyman job or not over one simple incident. He even asks Bob to call in another guy to take the spot when asking him to fix the circuit in the freezer. Linda tries to cheer Teddy up by thinking that he’s still a good handyman and would hire him to fix the circuit from the freezer.
But Bob takes Linda to a private spot and thinks about hiring someone else to do job, mostly due to what happened to Reggie’s gazebo and thinks that what happened to the gazebo would happen to the restaurant. But Linda won’t let that slide and don’t want to throw him under the bus and of course, cheap too when it comes to hiring a handyman since...he’s pretty much the best the family got. That and hiring someone else would cost Bob a lot of money, so it looks like they’re going with the real electrician to take Teddy’s place, but it will cost the trip to the trampoline park, which pretty much upsets Tina, Gene, and Louise, who were just getting ready to spend a day over at the park only to have smushed into goop that pretty much resembles the kids’ day jumping through trampolines...indoor of course, and now they have to watch it goes away because of a faulty circuit and with Teddy now uncapable of repairing stuff, might as well kiss the place goodbye. Though Linda, once again, won’t let that slide and ending up convincing that if a real electrician comes into play, then he or she would point massive amounts of wrongs that happened around the whole building that would be considered unsafe to work and live and that’s where the family decided to get his groove back by trying to cheer him up. Leave that to the kids as the family decided to cook up a burger. And thus of course, we enter the story aspect of the episode and again, it looks like we’re going to separate into three different sections and of course, the judging of each story.
And we begin with Louise’s story which takes place in a world where everything is underwater and not a single landmass not affected by the water. Apparently, this is what the world is going to look like if we really don’t take climate change too fucking seriously. The place is underwater. People are on boats, scrambling for some food floating their way where we switch over to Teddy finally finishing up the circuit down into the underground, rather the under the ship basement, before coming out with the restaurant now floating and everyone doing their very best to help out. Apparently being the only essential business to remain open for the public. Oh yeah, like I’m sure the jolly roger flag with Kuchi Kopi’s head replacing the skull of the jolly roger would signify that you guys are open for business. And of course, the place that Louise mentions in her story when trying to cheer Teddy up when seeing a lollipop, let’s not forget that they’re banned in Washington state, hit the surface from the water and it’s not a grassy or sandy surface that the lollipop hit, no sir or ma’am, it hit an island and guess the name of the island that Louise have come up with. Any guesses? No? Okay.
It’s Candy Island. Candy Island...an island full of candy and its name Candy Island. It’s motherfucking Flapjack. It’s motherfucking Flapjack with Candy Island now present. I mean I know it’s Louise and imagination an island full of candy is pretty much a kid thing to come up with. But...man, did not expect a Flapjack reference coming into play. Funny because the episode aired on the creator’s birthday. Yeah, Thurop Van Orman, created Flapjack. Voiced Flapjack, episode aired on his birthday.
Switching back to the restaurant as sea where we have Rudy, in his post-apocalypse getup with a seashell necklace and water wings, coming by through boat to order two burgers, though because of the floods that caused the whole planet to be put underwater, the burger buns are now wet and soggy, and no one, and I mean NO ONE, would enjoy a sandwich or burger or whatever with soggy bread. But Rudy doesn’t mind and want it to be in plastic bags for him to get some reading material out to pass the time. As Rudy places his oar onto the side of the boat, Louise noticed something on Rudy’s back. You think that it would be random tattoo at first. I know a tattoo, and a permanent one, seems out of the ordinary tattoo because...well he’s a kid, and that pretty much be painful to get one and also removing it as well. But since it’s the post-apocalypse thanks to the hundred-year storm courtesy of Louise, might as well add it in. Louise then get Tina involved and noticed the thing on Rudy’s back and it reveals to be a map to Candy Island. Which probably sounds good for the Belchers but...
Yep, this asshole. Logan and his goons and of course, if Logan is here...in come the swarm of arrogant and delusional locus nest known as the Louigan shippers ready to claim their mark and try to bend any moment into a “special” one for them. Aight, where’s the baseball bat? Yeah, so Logan is also after the map to Candy Island like Kylo Ren looking for the map to Luke in The Force Awakens but unlike The Force Awakens to with Kylo looking for BB-8, who assumedly have the map, only to just switch the focus to Rey, Logan and his goons just straight up go at it by firing pieces of shrimp onto the Belchers and Teddy, which sadly Gene cannot consume even though it’s food because it’s shrimp and shrimp is considered shellfish and shellfish is of course allergic to. But yeah, the Belchers and Teddy got pelted by shrimp coming from Logan’s friends, I.e. Jacob and Scotty, causing Logan to kidnap Rudy and head off to find Candy Island. So it looks like Logan might be getting a one-way ticket to Candy Island thanks to a kidnapping of a Regular Sized Rudy. Man, the resume isn’t going to look good once civilization gets back to normal from the flood.
And since this is Louise’s story in how to cheer a Teddy up when fallen through the dumps, Teddy decided to pull out a secret weapon to chase after Logan and his merry men of bullshitters who kidnapped Rudy because it looks like he may have pimped up the whole place from top to bottom...
By turning the place into a mobile boat, probably a war boat minus the landing spots for the military jets then we might go Top Gun on this shit. No, rather than Top Gun, we’re going Mad Max: Fury Road on this bitch to chase after Logan and his bitch ass goons with the restaurant raising up from the waters for a few inches in height with a wheel to steer the whole place and headed off in record fashion, of course splashing Mort in the way who is rowing his coffin as a boat, before finally reaching up to Logan and his group with Rudy in the back of Logan’s speedboat. Of course, ending up being pelted by more shrimp with everyone heading down to avoid getting pelted before Teddy, under Louise’s request, presses the button and begins revealing poles from the grounds of the ship. Like those poles where athletes used to go over that pole in those track and field events...pretty much that.
The Belcher kids used the poles to get themselves to take down Logan and his goons as well as getting Rudy back by going one by one. Well mostly Louise and Gene, who took down two of Logan’s friends with Tina having some difficulty with the pole and resulting in her taking the back seat. Louise being the first to take out one of Logan’s friends and Gene the other, with a butt shot that pretty much coming right at you. Thus, leaving Louise to take on Logan, as in fighting and not in the way of your sick fantasies, to rescue Rudy from the net. And the fight pretty much last a few moments until Logan is finally pushed out from his jet ski and grabs Rudy out of the net, of course, going back for the inhaler...wonder how Rudy would refill that where everything is now underwater, including pharmacies? Well either way, Rudy is now saved, and Logan is now defeated, thank the lord of that one. As the Belchers, Teddy, and Rudy now finally made it to the promised land that is Candy Land where they reside there for years and live likes royalty and all the candy they can eat...well until the cavities and diabetes deiced to kick in but hey, at least everyone got a happy ending...for them at least. The rest can probably like fuck off and starve as Louise’s story comes to an end.
So that was Louise’s story and honestly, this was probably the best out of the three, yeah, I know it’s early, but you already know the gist by now so might as well put this sucker to rest. Of course, let’s get to two more stories because it looks like that story didn’t cheer Teddy up from his glum and Bob ready to call another electrician into the restaurant and that’s where Tina comes into the picture and decided to tell her story and her attempt to cheer Teddy up.
And Tina kicks off her story with the disappearance of the band Boyz4Now cause apparently, they’re considered important cultural figures, sorry K-pop bands and stans, can’t wait for the #Boyz4NowIsOverParty to trend once this review is posted. It’s gonna be delish. But yeah, Boyz4Now are now missing, and by missing, I mean stranded on top of Mount Everest which...why?! Cause climbing Mount Everest is never easy. It’s never easy to reach to the top of the mountain. Most people never came back alive when trying to climb up or down. And now they’re stuck when trying to film a music video which...you think you should’ve done that in a studio?! On a green screen?! Turning the thermostat temperature down to Elsa’s castle level cold filled with penguins with machine guns that just landed from the fictional planet of Hoth. And instead it’s off to Mount Everest to shoot a music video because...Hollywood execs said so and didn’t even bother brining oxygen tanks and rations of food. HR and PR departments are going to have a field day over what happened with them.
But yeah, the band is stranded over at Mount Everest and about to be frozen to death, not to mention not having any oxygen left in their system, putting Tina to have her panties in a twist, it’s a phrase folks, calm down, and panic over the lack of rescue. Even Louise seems to follow what Tina is doing mostly because Boo Boo is there and Louise have a crush on him and try to not make a scene of her having a crush on the motherfucker to the family, well except for Tina who knows that she has the hots for the guy. So what does this have to do with helping Teddy getting his groove back? Said Bob.
Well Teddy’s here, out of the blue, in the living room after fixing downstairs with Bob complimenting the guy and gives him a pretend ride of roller coaster in which Teddy seems to enjoy. So...does Tina think that Bob and Teddy might be a thing? I mean I know it’s 2020 and of course, love mean no gender. Nothing wrong with that. Bob and Teddy does some crazy shit in the past but for Tina to think that Bob and Teddy being a thing...might as well be the best ship for Bob for the year. Look out Linda...unless it’s a three-way. He has two hands. Nothing wrong with that. But anyway, Bob and Teddy enjoy their fun but Tina is in panic mode and worry about the fate of the band Boyz4Now and have to do something to save them from a lack of rescue and oxygen and to take notes from Louise’s story from before, Teddy has done something behind the scene to make the restaurant mobile. Louise’s story was sea, mostly because the whole world is underwater. How will Tina one up Louise when it comes to the type of transportation that Teddy made for the restaurant?
Well we head out to Zeke and Jimmy Jr hanging out outside of Jimmy Pesto’s and looking at the restaurant across the street and talking about interesting Tina is. Of course, it isn't a Tina story without adding some Jimmy Jr into the mix...and also Zeke as well. If you haven’t checked out my review of “The Hormone-iums" back in 2016, I did say, mentioning in that dream sequence with Jimmy Jr proposing to her but Zeke does the same but the diamond is a bit bigger than his, thinking that she knows that Zeke has a thing for her from the moment finding out about him helping Tina when giving her a story to of course, the whole mascot thing and trying not get pelted by a water balloon. I mean hell, in “Go Tina on the Mountain”, she had a dream of both him and Jimmy Jr switching heads. I know that Josh is out of the race last week, thus leaving us with only Zeke and Jimmy Jr being the only two contenders left in the road to Tina’s heart, not ruling out a rebound because...future and whatnot...but it’s pretty much a two-man race. Oh yeah...
And the restaurant decided to take the playbook from the Disney and Pixar film Up where instead of a fuck ton of balloons to carry the place, it’s a hot air balloon, so it’s pretty much a zeppelin. Led Zeppelin, I wish but no. The family and Teddy headed out via the hot air to rescue the band from being freeze to death onto the Himalayas. Only to be cut off by Bob to think Teddy would ever turn the restaurant mobile like in the seas or in the air is pretty much a flat-out fantasy and ready to call the electrician and for Teddy to ready to call it quits. So uh...thanks for “cheering up” Teddy there, Bob. Really nailed it. Back to Tina’s story.
The restaurant, now flying through the air, and hopefully didn’t get any attention from the air force and causing massive delays to nearby airports, as they travel across the sea and finally made it to the top of Mount Everest with the guys of Boyz4Now arguing over who’s the dumbass, which don’t remember Allen being someone who wears glasses as of the promo in the fictional world promoting the band...I say contacts. Pitting blame on Boo Boo, who came up with the idea of them traveling and filming over at Mount Everest and pretty much putting their relationship onto thin ice, no pun intended. The restaurant finally arrives at the summit and are ready to get them out of the mountain but of course, they won’t go up unless they have a tortilla on standby, which...it’s a local burger place, not a Del Taco on wheels. Of course, like Louise’s story, Teddy here have a secret weapon in mind and ready for use and that is of course...
To have the booth come down for them to get up but it looks like this thing is not controlled by technology when being brought down from moments ago and have Teddy to do the dirty work by peddling his way to get the four up to the restaurant and in time before the avalanche to come in and takes them away. As in an avalanche...that pretty much stormed in...and covering the highest peak of Mount Everest? Like how the fuck would that even work?! I can’t tell if that’s supposed to add something to the story or something coming out from a bad game of Dungeons and Dragons. But either way, the band is now saved and of course, since this is Tina’s story to say the least...
Ending up thinking of herself winning an Academy Award for best music video that she directed, even though that’s not even a thing. I’m surprised this wasn’t the VMAs on MTV, either wise Viacom might end up suing the company for using their award show. Wonder if they’re pissed off over the soundtrack not being nominated? And that was Tina’s side of the story in her attempts to cheer Teddy up and since we’re in the halfway point of the episode, not enough. So that’s two people who didn’t even make the to help Teddy out in his time of need, thus leaving the last Belcher kid to tell their story in the form of Gene. From Gene.
And start off the final story of the episode with Andy and Ollie having some fun with their pet lizard that Jimmy Pesto somehow give them to, mostly for them to shut up, so father of the year right here folks, as he takes a pot, full of pasta sauce, out for him to pour it out onto the street and of course, his usual taunting of Bob across the street because why the fuck not, he’s an ass. Once closing time comes in with Jimmy locking the doors, Andy and Ollie watch their pet lizard walking away from them and crawls into the sewer where the pasta sauce made its way down and consuming it and once it’s done, it grows and grows and not to mention turning from green to red and once finally decided to come out from the sewer with a mean look from its eyes and...
Godzilla. Yep, Andy and Ollie’s little lizard friend has now transcended into a parody of the iconic Japanese monster known as Godzilla and thus putting the whole town into panic mode, parts of Ocean Avenue, and probably parts of the Seymour’s Bay area badly damaged, and have the National Guard being activated to take down the motherfucker, even though Andy and Ollie asks them to not kill it because it is their pet. But apparently, unlike Godzilla where he pretty much roar and treat the military like they’re play toys, he got special powers courtesy of the pasta sauce substituting the radioactive waste. So what we’re talking about? Like fire breath? Laser eyes? Radioactive scaly skin?
Or do farts. Might as well do farts because it is Gene’s story. Feel like the fart jokes in the show have now become dated for some reason to the point where it was never brought up for a while. Teddy, same with Tina and Louise’s story, head out from the basement, now noticing the family watching the action unfolding with and fears that the lizard monster is about to make its way towards the restaurant and thus having Teddy to come clean and said that fixing the walk in light isn’t the only thing that he had to work because like the previous two stories, he had worked on something with the restaurant. Louise’s version has the place as a boat. Tina’s version has the place into a hot air balloon. What does Gene’s story have in story for the restaurant?
Louise goes sea, Tina goes air, and that makes Gene going land by having Teddy turning the restaurant into a Voltron. And yes, it is a Voltron because if you say Power Rangers, then congratulations, you’re pretty much a dumbass up to this point. Maybe next time we might go all out Super Sentai, maybe with you, Louise, and Tina and probably add some people like I don’t know...anyone in the friend group. Anyone. Feel like the number of people feels more like a sausage fest. So everyone goes into position for each portion of the mech with Louise and Bob in the feet, Tina and Linda the arms, Gene himself the head, and Teddy the eyes and butt of the bot and begins heading off to take on the giant lizard. Which they did landed a few punches and caused some damage to a few buildings but dealing with a massive disadvantage against the mutated lizard. Being pushed back a few steps, almost crushing Speedo Guy to death in the ratio of the battle, to of course, having a fart blast right through the robot, causing the family and Teddy to smell the horrible smell of the lizard fart. At least it didn’t poop itself, otherwise we may have ourselves a problem.
Teddy decided to throw in one final push into defeating the giant lizard monster, known as Pizzilla, by rewiring the robot and decided to the ultimate life deciding option known to man when dealing with your enemies...pulling the finger. In which the lizard did and cause it to fart as well. And rather than retaliate even more, the lizard seems to enjoy it. Pulling it a few more times before decided to become friends with each other and have some fun...despite that the portions of the robot that the family except for Gene are now underwater...don’t worry, they made it to the top. Though the methane levels into the atmosphere has pretty much gone through the roof. Thus, ending Gene’s story. And apparently, Gene’s story, along with giving second opinions to Tina’s and Louise’s stories, changed his mind and decided to go and give it a a shot again by fixing the walk-in light in the freezer. And although that the restaurant may now have to deal with some fire damage, at least they finally get to go to the trampoline park...so that’s pretty much win...for the kids at least. Despite wanting their belongings to be burned down but hey, at least it’s better than not going. And they saved Teddy from quitting his job, so there has to be some positives into the mix in all of this. Right?
Reaction/Thoughts:
So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? To be frank here, this was an alright episode with this being another episode of the kids telling their stories since some fans were hoping for that being the case for the season and with Teddy being the center of attention. Which pretty much feels like with the same thing with Gayle back in Season 5...don’t know if this is better than Gayle’s because the Gayle one has some ups and some downs. This one also has that blended in with some flaws for each story. Beginning with Louise’s.I have no problem with Louise’s story. Do think that it’s probably better than the other two because despite that the action seems short at the near end of it, mostly because not enough time the episode has for a 22-minute episode, fine, I guess. I mean at least we get to see Louise and the siblings taking out Logan and his friends to save Rudy, well mostly Gene and Louise cause Tina pretty much got taken into the backseat of this. Nice to see a little reference coming from a Cartoon Network series in Flapjack when seeing and naming the island full of candy named Candy Island, now all we’re missing are the characters and the town of Storm-a-Long Harbor and boom! Although Warner won’t take that lightly and you won’t see reruns of this show once 2023 arrives. And also, Logan being taken down like a punk ass bitch by Louise to save Rudy. Why do I have the feeling that the Louigan shippers are going to twist this story up. You wish I were hyperbolic, but you know it’s about to come.
For Tina’s story...I have some issues, emphasis on some. For a Tina story to help Teddy out, she did try to do that and for a moment there, thought it was like short-lived due to constant interruptions and not because of cutting into commercial break. But Tina’s story here feels more like a bit about her than helping Teddy. Sure, it’s pretty much wash, rinse, repeat for her and Gene’s story following Louise’s with making the restaurant mobile and having some secret compartments built in, mostly when it comes to having the guys from Boyz4Now being the people on peril after being stuck on top of Mount Everest...which, stupidest decision someone, being Boo Boo, to have them on top of that. Not to mention having an avalanche...a literal avalanche covering the top portion of Mount Everest and unless there’s like an even higher mountain than that, then I have to call bull. Though the story did have reference the movie Up only to switch a lot of balloons to just one and with hot air. At least there’s that.
Gene’s story has to come in second place when it comes to all of this. Do have to applaud him for mixing both Godzilla and Voltron into one, even though I haven’t even seen either one, I await your hate in the comments. The action was there and that was something to gloss over. But the resolution almost seems a bit vague with the idea of the monster decided to be friends with the robot that Teddy have created under the Belchers’ noses, but it is Gene’s story and what’s done is done. And also, an underlying use of farts, which is pretty much one of the staples from the show years past. So Gene’s story here have to come in second, thus putting Louise’s at first and Tina’s in last when it comes to ranking each of the stories for this week’s episode.
So final score, this was an alright episode, if not, average at best. I say Louise’s story here was pretty much the best one out of the three stores that were presented in this episode with Gene was good though a vague resolution to wrap up his story. Where to Tina’s story pretty much have some ups and some downs and I think the downs I stated pretty much balanced her story out. So I’ll give “The Handyman Can”...
