Well, with the World Series now out of the way with the Red Sox winning it all and now that we’re only less than two months left in the year, my god, how time flies so fast. Might as well consider this episode sort of a like an after school special when it comes to why doing revenge is a terrible idea to begin with in this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers where the Belcher kids decided to take up revenge after their guidance counselor accidentally released an embarrassing video and team up with an old face while Bob and Linda join a paper airplane throwing contest win some sweet, sweet cash…and stuff, in my spoilerific review of the Fifth Episode of the Ninth Season of Bob’s Burgers, titled “Live and Let Fly”.
You know that feeling you get from watching this episode that it seems like you’re not watching your old fashion Bob’s Burgers episode but more of line of an after school special about the dangers of taking revenge? Well…this is one of those episodes. And I get it, not all episodes are perfect. You takes shows recently like Doctor Who following the Rosa Parks episode with last week’s “Arachnids in the UK” and this week with “The Tsuranga Conundrum” where the plot of the episode in play seems like it’s slowly becoming dull and bland. Or…I’ve been watching the dub of the Boruto anime recently and man…yeah, feels like I’m watching an after school sort of episode despite that…yeah, things are gonna kick up the pace later on. I’m not saying that the episode was bad, there are some good moments in play throughout the episode so…yeah. And it has the Belchers kids taking up revenge and ending up teaming up with an old face in Kurt from Season 4 and do like a revenge chain only for Kurt to make things up with his sister Laverne and for the kids to call off the revenge plane ad to show off the convention that Frond will be attending. All while Bob and Linda has to make some paper airplanes for an upcoming contest over at a up and coming air show and it mostly centers on Bob on…take the subplot of Season 5’s “Midday Run” of Bob trying to be better in the arts and crafts department, only with paper airplanes, a dream sequence…and no naked Edith. No naked Edith. You know there were like kids watching this series. For a show that is suited for…teenagers, young adults, and…someone named Craig. I don’t know who’s Craig is? But I know he’s in that majority of the viewership of the show.
So the main plot kicks off with Mr. Frond arriving at the lunch table where the Belcher kids are eating their lunch when Mr. Frond tells Tina, Gene, and Louise that they didn’t serve detention and that he needs them to serve the five hours that they need to serve. And Mr. Frond ain’t having that when it comes to the Belcher kids ditching detention to fuck off somewhere. And that’s where of course, Mr. Frond decided to have a private meeting with the kids and tell them that they have to do either one of the two things: serve the five hours of detention that needed to be served. Or take Option B. And Option B for the kids to avoid serving time in detention is to help Frond out with a video that is he making for an upcoming event where all of the counselors are attending and this video that he is producing and somewhat star in is of course, his presentation. Hmm? Either serve time in detention and waste our time doing absolutely nothing for five long hours and waste the day away? Or be part of a video where you have random ass counselors from all over…I don’t want to say country…I would say…around town…around…I don’t know? The Tri-State area? So without further hesitation, mostly on Frond begging on Louise, Tina, and Gene to do the video so he don’t go out there make a fool out of himself, the kids decided to have a go and do the video. I mean, not like things are about to make a massive downward turn towards disaste…
Oh my god…the Saved by the Bell reboot looks redonculous as fuck. I swear, the reboot train needs to either derail or stop at a station at some point in time. No, this is what the Belcher children has now gotten into when they have to avoid serving time in detention…do the video…dressed up in neon color shirts, triangular patterns stitched on parachute pants, and a background that really screams late 80s, early 90s. I don’t know what was on Mr. Frond’s mind when he was coming with ideas when it come to that video? But it was something that the Belcher kids would probably never want to do. Reputation wise. But they chose that option to avoid the serving time in detention option. The kids tells Mr. Frond that whatever they do, they told him to not show the tape around the school. In which Frond gave his word. I mean, it’s not like he’s gonna reverse that and accidentally posted it and for the Belcher kids to be the laughing stock of the school tomorrow, right? Right? Riiight? Riiiiiiight?
Remember when things haven’t gone right through the shitter? I remember those days. Before the dark days came into play. Yeah, so the day after the kids partake in a video filmed by Frond to avoid detention, everyone around the school saw the video and lo and behold, they’re now the laughingstock in the whole school. And the Belcher kids aren’t freaking happy about it. Telling Frond not to post it, in which Frond tries to explain to them that, “Hey, it was an accident. Didn’t know that this would explode all the way to the school grounds.” But of course, the Belcher kids decided to not take Frond’s apology lightly. Stormed out of the room and decided to take matters into their own hands by of course, doing revenge. He embarrassed them in school ground. They’re now gonna embarrass him in the upcoming counselor convention. And wow, okay, can we talk about Tina for a bit. Because I know that the three are pissed over the whole video thing. But it looks like Tina really want to murder Frond in cold blood. Like…jeez Tina, calm down, I know you want to get back at Frond for that video but…at least calm your tits for a bit and try something that doesn’t like land you guys in maximum prison.
The kids need to come up with a plan to get back at Mr. Frond and it looks like coming with a revenge plan isn’t gonna be as easy as they thought. That is until they saw a plane flying in the sky with a banner, what appears to be an ad, you know, those ads on a plane you see for like a local business or something you see for like…marriage proposals and shit like that? Well, it looks like the Belcher children found something they need for their revenge tour by placing an ad on the banner and have the pilot fly over the convention where Frond will be attending so that Frond will be laughingstock of the convention, or according to the plan, him being the most hated person in the convention. But they need something to add something into the said ad for the plane to fly over. So the Belcher kids decided to film Frond with a bag with a hole in it, of course, the bag has a camera in place and recording what Frond is saying as they are having a conversation.
They film the conversation they have with Frond and of course, Mr. Frond begins to badmouth about the other counselors. Not noticing that he’s being filmed and not noticing that there’s a camera inside the bag. I mean, yeah, it would a total low blow for the kids if Frond were to find out that something is very wrong, noticing that there’s a black spot coving the hole that appears to be the lens of the camera. Say that…if a beep goes off from the camera from either the battery is about to die or that the memory is about to be full and Frond begins to notice that the Belcher kids are filming him to get back at him for that video. And of course, resulting in the plan to fall apart. That and of course, possible suspension. But that’s not happening, and the kids got the whole thing on tape. Finally got the dirt on Frond. So step number one is already set and done. Now it’s up to step number two, find both a plane and the pilot for creating an advertisement. And just as they arrive at the airport, not one of those fancy city airports, more of where you go to get flying lessons and get you pilot license. And whatever you do…
Don’t let this guy fly a plane. I’m serious. Don’t let this guy fly a plane. I’m already gonna get in trouble with that. This might be my last ride. Anyway, the three pay a visit to the municipal airport in hopes to land the pilot to do a job for them only to be stopped by an old face that we haven’t seen in over half a decade.
Yes, Kurt is back after a five year absence. Stopping the kids from what they are doing and of course, they are here to ask him that they are gonna find a pilot and place an ad for revenge and it looks like Kurt has something similar with what the Belcher kids are doing, which is of course, taking the route of revenge. And I kinda love the little callback when Tina brought up the events of “Seaplane!” when Linda kicked his ass over her falling over Kurt’s charm, in which didn’t work on Linda. Linda’s not that stupid to connect the dots on what Kurt is doing. If you don’t know who Kurt is, you’re either a random reader out of nowhere and doesn’t know what I’m talking about or you’ve watched the series but already forgot, well…let me tell you a little history lesson.
So Kurt, nicknamed “Upskirt Kurt”, is a character that was introduced back in the Season 4 episode “Seaplane!” back in 2013 following Bob and Linda having a bad night and a bad date and Linda wants to get to some flying lessons but of course, Bob refuses to let Linda have at it. So Linda wandered off and got a pilot instructor in Kurt. But of course, when Kurt’s name was brought up when Bob was having a chat with Mr. Fischoeder, Bob heard that Kurt has a little reputation when it comes to his character, mostly with him making women love him by have the plane pretend to have a problem, land on a random island, bring out the picnic, and then it’s divorce city for the spouse. Linda on the other hand, did not fall victim to Kurt’s charms and head back home to Bob and the kids…in which the plane accidentally been split away from the boat and putting the family at risk. Don’t worry, they survived at the end of that episode with Linda safely landing the plane on the water a la Captain Sully.
The kids told Kurt that they want to get revenge on Frond for the video by looking for a nearby pilot with the banner flying plane. In which Kurt told the Belcher children he too want to get back at somebody. Mostly because with the upcoming air show in play, Kurt reveals that he has a rival that is coming to town for the event and Kurt wants to get back at him, or her…it’s her. It’s her. And her name is Laverne. And this episode brought up some stuff to know about Kurt despite that he was originally going to be a one-off character after his debut back in Season 4. Never to come back after one episode. But no, the writers of the episode decided to bring him back this season and decided to have some backstory into play to see where the direction of the episode is going. And you know what? We should probably more of that. I mean, I don’t probably want to wait for another two years for the movie to come out and learn more about the characters or wait until the head honchos come up with a book, like an encyclopedia or some shit, and be like what Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, or Star vs The Forces of Evil have done and to that.
It was revealed that Kurt and Laverne used to be stunt pilots a long time ago and according to Gus, the guy that we just saw back in “The Taking of Funtime One Two Three” recently, told the kids on behalf of Kurt that yeah, they used to be stunt pilots and things were going well for the two until Laverne stole the move that Kurt was about to use called the dice n’ slice and make him look like a total dumbass up in the air. And we then get a flashback where of course, Laverne stole Kurt’s move for the air show.
So Kurt has to do something different at the last minute and had to outdo Laverne without making himself looking like a total dumbass. He even tried to push himself in hopes to do the impossible but of course, making a fool of himself. The judges saw, and they were not freaking impressed on what Kurt did. And what make things worse for Kurt, despite that his signature move just got stolen, outdid himself enough where even the judges aren’t freaking impressed like it’s a beauty pageant gone horribly wrong for one of the contestants, he shat himself. He shat himself following eating a breakfast plate of huevos rancheros. It’s like in…I don’t know, let’s say…wrestling. I don’t watch wrestling, so here’s me fucking things up with the analogy, you’re about to do a special move against your upcoming opponent but then all of a sudden, someone else who is already in the ring, took that move. And that in hopes to not make yourself a complete and utter dumbass, you had to do another signature move at the last minute, only to end up getting your ass handed. Yeah. Again, I don’t even watch wrestling. So sorry for fucking that up. Oh yeah, and the revenge chain is finally in full swing.
We have that little montage leading up to the big event of the day of the air show, and I guess I could give a nod or two for the subplot since it’s been coinciding to the upcoming air show. So the montage for the main plot showcases the kids training Kurt to get ready for the big day where you have him upside down around the playground equipment. It’s mostly around Kurt doing an upside down flip when doing a move for the upcoming air show. But will that work enough to finally beat out Laverne in the big show of airplanes? We’re gonna have to wait and see about that as the montage also shows Bob and Linda making paper airplanes and trying to adjust their shoulders for the perfect throw like their quarterbacks ready to throw the ball in the biggest game of their lives. Someone should’ve told that to the Buffalo Bills quarterback Nate Peterman. We’ll get to Bob’s dream sequence once we get to the subplot.
The big day arrives for Kurt and the Belcher children as they finally meet toe to toe with Laverne. And shocker about Laverne and Kurt’s relationship is that despite they were enemies for 20 long years, found out that those two are actually…siblings. Shocker…if you haven’t read the plot synopsis for this episode. So yeah, it is revealed that both Kurt and Laverne are in fact siblings. Meaning that the Belcher children has now stumbled into the crossfire of a 20-year sibling rivalry. The two bicker and bicker and Laverne straight up accusing Kurt of stealing the dice n’ slice from her, but for Kurt, it’s the other way around. And just as they are just about to like…let’s say, about to kill each other with more words than fists, it looks like Kurt is up first for showing off his skills for the air riding contest. In which Kurt begins to feel even more anxious than ever before. That and of course, ate a plate of huevos rancheros. In which, why would you ever decide to do that just as you’re about to outdo your sister and put the rivalry to rest? I’m not saying that’s considered to be the definition of insanity. That’s more of him not reading the script correctly on how not to fuck up the biggest event in your lifetime. But as he is about to have somewhat of a breakdown, Louise decided to slap some sense into Kurt and have a go and not mess things up as he prepares to step into the plane and perform in front of both the audience and the judges.
In which he did. He got into the plane and begins to perform the act. And it seems things are going well for Kurt…maybe. Because there are some few instances where it looks like he’s already messing it up when already up the air and it looks like we’re about to have ourselves a potential plane crash. But it looks like that’s not the case. It looks like he finally got his act together and decided to pull things through…that is until we end up finding the real reason why the sibling rivalry has to last throughout the twenty long years that have these two wanting to rip each other’s throats out. It’s because of daddy dearest. Yep, their dad is the sole reason on why the sibling rivalry comes into play to where we are now. Their dad teach them the move, only for the dad to teach Laverne the move and have Kurt accuse her of stealing the idea from him. Thus, kicking off a rivalry that last through the decades, it’s 2018, from the Clinton Administration all the way to right now in the Trump Administration. Or is it around the H.W. Bush Administration? The setting when it comes to the year seems kind of wonky.
Laverne begins to head out and intrude Kurt’s performance, in which Kurt is majorly worried that just as he is about to outperform her, she’s about to come in and about to fuck it all up. And it looks like the sibling rivalry between these two is about to take a massive ugly turn for possibly the worse as the kids now found out that Kurt and Laverne’s rivalry all began over their dad teaching either one of them the dice n’ slice and the other providing false accusations against each other and realize that this is wrong. This is oh so wrong between these two and begins to realize that maybe revenge isn’t a good idea and that they should now do two things, get both Kurt and Laverne to make up and put the rivalry to an end and of course, calling off the revenge against Mr. Frond and accept their shame for that video that they did to avoid detention.
The kids tells both Kurt and Laverne from the radio that they should put their rivalry into a complete and utter halt and that no one stole the move from a very long time ago. That they been lied to from their dad just for show. Which…by the way, where’s was the mother when the rivalry was to be kicked off twenty long years ago? I just realized that. You thought that if things go terribly wrong with two of your kids wanting to rip each other’s throats off all because of the dad lying to them on who got who or what in their arsenal, the mom should step in, play the peacekeeper, and have these two make up before things go bad. That’s like if you and you’re sibling were supposed to learn how to parallel park for the upcoming driving exam and you got the good stuff on how to parallel park correctly but then all of a sudden, your sibling, who also learn how to parallel park correctly, accuses you of stealing that move and the dad, just standing there, doing nothing and watching the drama unfold. Who does that? Who freaking does that? Father of the Year, am I right?
So the two finally decided to put the twenty yearlong rivalry to an end thanks to the kids realizing that taking the path of revenge is terribly wrong and it could lead you into major problems, enough to not talk to your sibling for a very long time over one simple thing. And as the same time as both Kurt and Laverne prepare to make up, the Belcher kids now decided to call the revenge plan to get back at Mr. Frond off and tells Kurt to call the pilot in charge of that banner ad to call it off. However, Kurt tells them that the pilot has already lifted off and about to reach towards the hotel where Mr. Frond and the other counselors are at for the convention. However, the plan is already in full swing just as the kids begins to realize that the whole revenge thing isn’t working out, this was coming from Kurt. And they ask Kurt to message the pilot through radio to stop the thing. But however, Kurt told them that the person who flies that plane don’t use the radio that much, mostly on hating on air control acting like a whiny little wiener. That and the pilot is unlicensed. Yeesh, you’re like he’s gonna hijack a plan…okay, I would stop while I’m ahead. I will stop. I will stop. I will stop. So with no radio for that guy is heading over to where the convention is at, the next option to avoid a catastrophe waiting to happen, the kids decided to have Kurt to do the honors of cutting the ad off the plane as the plane arrives at the hotel where Frond is showing the video in front of the other counselors by using the dice n’ slice. And with that…ends the main plot of the episode. And we’ll get to my thoughts on the main plot, as well as the subplot of the episode as well in the reaction/thoughts section as for now, let’s talk about the subplot of the episode.
So for the second episode, not week, episode in a row, we have a subplot that didn’t somewhat suck. But the optimism meter may have lowered down a bit as the subplot progresses. It’s mostly centers, of course, like the previous four episodes where you have both Bob and Linda in play in the subplot category, but unlike the first three where it went from nowhere to trash to nowhere to put in the trash. But this one almost seems like I’m rewatching “Midday Run” but with a minor fixing in place when it comes to Bob and his attempts to make a paper airplane or “Stand By Gene” with Linda and her incredible throwing skills.
They enter the competition in the upcoming air show coming from Teddy where…the contest is mostly like hitting the target that you want to hit and the target that you hit is the prize that you won. And the grand prize in one of the prizes that will be introduced in the contest is a washer for laundry. Something that both Bob and Linda need for the laundry. Because they gonna need it come the next time the Belchers are in a major, major situation that results in them getting sweat and wear and tears in the clothing.
But the subplot of the episode is mostly spotlighted on Bob and of course, his attempts to make the perfect paper airplane. Having trouble making at least one paper airplane for Linda to throw in hopes to get a new washer. But apparently, Bob isn’t the type where arts and crafts isn’t in his favor, competition or not. See, like Season 5 with the paper art. Only of course, like I said, with a few fixings. And Bob kept going on and on and on trying to make at least one paper airplane. I get it Bob, you’re not good at making paper airplane. In fact, you never made a paper airplane ever in your life, huh? Don’t be ashamed there, we all have trouble with that stuff that is supposed to be easy only to fuck it big. He tried creating it with using just a stick to help fold it tight as Linda is getting exercise for her arm. However, it appears that Bob’s been using the wrong type of paper to make a paper airplane and decided to head over to the art store to get a special type of paper that happened to perfect for making the thing to fly well. You know notebook paper would’ve been in good use for making a paper airplane. You should’ve like…go to a home and office store or maybe at a dollar store to do so. Get the paper and do that. School kids back in the day, and I think they’re still doing it to this day, make paper airplanes with notebook paper whenever they are in class.
Yeah, so Bob headed down to Reflections and ask both Edith and Harold to buy a certain type of paper this is good for making paper airplanes, a 24 pound A4 paper. In which Harold has pulled it out from the counter and decided to open up the briefcase and opening it in front of Bob, in which you can’t see it, but that right there, is where Bob begins to feel gritty…
No, not the Flyers mascot. The word gritty. As in Bob now found his opportunity to make the perfect airplane for the upcoming contest. And that’s where the montage comes into play. We’re back in the montage and while the kids train Kurt not to fuck up with the upcoming air show, speaking of the air show, Bob and Linda. The duo train day and night, mostly day, when it comes to the making and the throwing. From one scene, you have Linda still training her arm and lifting a bottle of what appears to be gasoline or something like that as weights while Bob continues to make the airplane with his special papers. And with the next scene, we’re over at a store and as an employee talks to the customers about the washer, a paper airplane comes into the open hole of the washer, of course, all thanks to Bob and Linda training for the big day. And then, we get to the dream sequence.
We have Bob in an open field, up a hill, feeling the wind as the camera, from his point of view, sees the guy who taught him how to make the perfect paper airplane and Bob asks him that he made two types of paper airplanes that he learned and said made and having trouble picking which is the perfect one to be is use. In which the guy, Barry B, told Bob that the one he’s holding is the best one to be in good use, magically appears to be a paper airplane that Bob didn’t even made in the real world, but it looks like that dream plane will be in use for the upcoming competition as the two fly off into the air and right into the sun…not directly towards the sun, cause we don’t want that. No, to the open hole to the washing machine. And that’s where Bob wakes up in the middle of the night and storm out of bed and start making the paper airplane that he got in a dream. It’s like when you’re having trouble coming up with an idea, say a project for either at work or at school, either it’s in the form of art or something else in play, and then all of a sudden, you end up in a open field, that isn’t ruined by corporations…yet…and your role model or some random person that you had to watch or slept over throughout the presentation and decided to lend a help and creating something unique enough to shock the room. Will it be the number one post over at social media for the day? We don’t know. But I’m pretty sure some users probably either don’t give a fuck, troll with hateful comments like you’re a freaking Trump supporter, or a random spam bot coming in and…well, you know the rest of the story.
On to the end of the episode to where the contest is finally come into play following the kids telling both Kurt and Laverne to make up and put their differences behind after a 20-year sibling rivalry. And just as Linda was about to throw the paper into the prime target, looks like all that weight lifting sprain Linda’s shoulder, putting her in the injured reserve list and now putting her hands on Bob to throw the paper airplane. In which Bob has no skills in throwing stuff that isn’t but it looks like Bob go no choice but to do the job. Can’t pull out. Gotta do the thing. In which he did. But did paper make it to the washer and the answer is…
Nope. He missed the washing machine, but it looks like the Belchers will be getting a consolation prize of a blender. So no new washing machine for the family but hey, they got a blender. So uh…yeah, have fun with it guys. Blend it well. Get some fruit, make a smoothie night. But at least there’s one thing that Bob throughout the episode. Him creating the perfect paper airplane and of course, the perfect throw. Though he didn’t make to the washing machine and putting the airplane into the blender, he did make it though when it comes to the art and crafts section. And that’s something to boast about. So uh…yeah…good on you Bob. You did well. You did pretty well.
Reaction/Thoughts:
So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, a lot people are confused with how the episode is playing out when it comes to the main plot with the Belcher kids trying to plot revenge against Mr. Frond after being the laughingstock over at the school grounds. So is it a bland episode? Y-yeah. You could say that. But does that make it a bad episode? Actually no. Despite that the episode is bland and somewhat confusing to some, there are some good moments in the episode and the subplot is somewhat decent, but also good to watch despite that by the end of the day, this episode is gonna get the rewatch treatment.
Would never think that Kurt of all people would make a return after his debut back in Season 4 when trying to steal Linda away from Bob. And what make things a tad interesting, we got info on him, and from someone who was originally supposed to be one-off character. With the revelation that he, like the Belcher kids, want to get revenge on someone, who happened to Laverne, in which later on as we reach up to the air show, reveals to be his sister, have a two decade long sibling rivalry, only to find out that his dad was the one who orchestrated the rivalry to go into full effect. Father of the year, am I right? So just be thankful that the whole sibling rivalry has finally come to an end and finally have these two make up and call out the revenge plan.
I don’t know about y’all, but is it me or is all of the time throughout the episode where the kids seems rather…time wasteful? Because after being the laughingstock, the kids decided to get back at Mr. Frond and decide to make him the laughingstock by the time the convention comes in. Have him filmed saying hurtful things and place an ad on the plane to fly over. All of that, after finding out that the dad of Kurt and Laverne was the one who taught the two the dice n’ slice and straight up lie in front of their faces that either one falsely accuses one another, decided to call “fuck it” and put the plan on hold. Despite that the thing is already in full swing but then Kurt, with the help of the kids, have him do the dice n’ slice, and cut the banner off the plane, almost crashing to the other plane or crash into the building, and prevent a major problem for Mr. Frond. I see the main plot has somewhat taken some notes from the previous subplots. It’s like watching a game and you expect nothing and still felt let down. Pretty much sums up the recent results to the midterm elections here in the United States. One job Texas. One job.
The subplot pretty much is the spotlight for the episode to be decent enough where you have Bob and Linda getting ready to go all out for the upcoming paper airplane throwing contest and have Bob taking the spotlight of him having trouble making a paper airplane. Having him getting some knowledge from the internet with him using a stick to make the paper fold perfectly and tightly. Only for him to get a special kind of paper from both Edith and Harold, and lo and behold, he got things right with him making airplanes.
And the dream sequence is what really sold the idea of the subplot, if not, the whole episode, being decent. It’s mostly Bob trying to tell Barry B, the show’s Bob Ross, telling him which paper airplane is a good pick, only to realize that the design in his dream is the one true thing to be in use, in which he stormed out of bed, makes it, and when the day of the contest arrive, with Linda out of commission, Bob now became the new person to throw and it was a pretty good throw, though he missed the washing machine, it looks like he got a consolation prize in the form of a blender. So hey, it was a decent subplot. And proud of Bob of passing through the hurdles in the art and crafts section. But it looks like barrier is still in play. Good luck breaking that.
So all and all, I think this episode is mesh mosh, bland with a decent subplot and convenient backstory mention from a side character. So I’ll give “Live and Let Fly”…
…in between 6.5 to 7 out of 10. I know the math doesn’t equal to that, but because this episode caught some people off guard and having some issues of how the plot played out, this might be the thing that I have to come up with.
