An Alaskan Downfall: The Great North (as expected) Cancelled After Five Seasons by FOX | Fandom Update

So, remember The Great North, guys? Remember The Great North leading up to what is pretty much the show’s final episode review that was long as heck not too long ago? It took a while for the announcement to be made because we’re waiting for official confirmation and possibly an article or two that will include the tag indicating whether it will be available to shop.

Sadly we got the news today that The Great North is officially cancelled. I’m pretty sad about it. It’s one of a very small number of shows I’ve worked on that I genuinely loved and I really loved the whole talented crew I worked with. I feel lucky to have been there.

Yeah, here we are. It was expected, but goddamn, man. Goddamn. After four years on the air, with the last two years experiencing difficulties in keeping the ship afloat regarding almost everything, the news became official. Although the post above was posted just last week, right as the final episode review was nearing completion, it’s now official. And you can totally see the signs ahead of the double header and after, ranging from thank you posts as if they’re waiting for the inevitable to become reality to people who worked on the show looking for jobs post-Great North, whether they joined Bob’s Burgers or are doing other projects. And the post above by one of the show’s directors, Aimee Steinberger, confirms it.

I should've announced it earlier, upon seeing the post the morning after posting the review, but I had to play the waiting game because usually, most official sites like Variety, Deadline, or The Hollywood Reporter would have the call for everyone to read when getting the official word from the show’s creators. Who knew that the post from Wendy Molyneux’s Instagram page and the comments from some cast and crew members reflecting their time on the show leading up to this post on BlueSky were considered the final nail in the coffin? I mean, it was expected, but still, it’s not good news for anyone who is a Great North fan who either watched the show from the beginning or just became a fan through streaming.

I’d said this in my review of “It’s a Beef-derful Life Adventure”; if this is truly it, it has been a hell of a ride. It had been for the past four years since the show’s humble beginning in early 2021. Quite the ride it was. It just sucks that it would end out that way, even though the recent episode does feel like a series finale, as if they knew that it was never going to get renewed. It’s like they knew what the show’s fate was going to be. I was hoping for some good news regarding the show, but here we are because we can’t have nice things in this world.

I knew it was too good to be true. I knew that it was too good to be true the moment the montage of the past episodes was playing after Beef said “hot dog” to the sky as if we had reached a full circle of the show since the first episode. It was giving me flashbacks to how Central Park ended after three seasons, when showing a montage of the Tillermans and everyone else doing their own thing as if they knew they ain’t going to get renewed for a fourth season, like with The Great North now not getting a sixth season. I wouldn't rule out a movie if there is a miracle. I mean, if the iCarly revival plans on doing that as a proper conclusion following that cliffhanger, then why not us? One can dream.

And this pretty much tells you about the world of animation, rather, the entertainment industry as a whole, regarding the news of The Great North and most shows before that had fallen victim to it, and that is that, at the end of the day, it’s all a numbers game. That pretty much tells you about the industry. It’s all about those sweet, sweet numbers, with eyes glued to the screen and advertisements making that sweet, sweet cash for them and the network. Even if there was some incompetence for the network to do shit like this during the last two seasons, since 2024, when it comes to promoting, that pretty much causes a hassle for the show that has to rely on social media to do the promotion.

Some others, across social media, including myself, had to do the job just so it could get renewed. And also everyone, apologies for the shade, but I have to do this, where the fuck were y’all when I told you to support the show during our final hours?  Don’t know why you all didn’t show your support until the final hours, but whatever, I guess if it means having the funniest thing to pull to get them to change their minds. So, yeah, Fox, and I guess Disney, that’s on y’all for euthanizing the show after five seasons. And I guess everyone, but mainly Fox and Disney. Mainly Disney.

So, what now? Just because it’s cancelled now doesn’t mean you’ll just leave it hanging because there’s no new content. You can still watch the show, all five seasons, legally, of course, whether it’s you watching on your device or having it on the screen while you’re doing something as audio. Hulu would be the way to go, or Disney+ if you live outside of the US. I know that some don’t want to do that because of what happened with the Jimmy Kimmel situation that got him censored for a week, and having to cave to the Trump regime over a “joke” that isn’t a joke, but more of the right wing hoping to score political points. I await the censoring in my end of the bargain, as well as a firing squad knocking on my door.

But yeah, do it legally because it is the only way to show your support to at least try to have the network change their minds about the decision regarding The Great North. I know that the whole situation regarding our First Amendment rights being violated in the most violent way possible by this administration, but at least give the show a shot. Just give it a try. Just do it. Don’t cry in the comments, even though adding pressure should at least do the trick, just your job and watch the show (legally on Hulu or Disney+ (if you live outside of the US)).

Other than that, it's not the way to go out that way. I mean, it was expected, sure, but uh... yeah, end of an era. I mean, five seasons... beat the odds like how Bob’s Burgers did in its early years when having to be moved around time slot after time slot. Got five seasons out of it. Almost hit the 100-episode benchmark, which would’ve been great, but the strikes happened. And yes, some episodes were scrapped because of it, which would’ve put The Great North at 101 episodes. That, and syndication. By the way, I know we’re short of reaching that, but FXX, Adult Swim, the door is still open to air all five seasons. But other than that, I’d said this in my review of “It’s a Beef-derful Life Adventure”, and I’ll say it again, it has been a hell of a ride after four years. A huge thank you to the cast and crew of the show who made it possible. Beating the odds to get five seasons out of it, and uh... yeah, it’s the end of an era.

I’m still going to talk about it. I am going to start thinking of doing character discussions on each of the Tobins, but that won’t be around sometime around January, once Bob’s Burgers is on hiatus. So, I guess a retrospective would probably do the trick the next time Bob’s Burgers will be on break, which isn’t too long with the week of October 12 as the week off date.

But other than that, it sucks to see this go. It was expected, but it sucks to see this one go. And unless we pull off a miracle in having the network change their minds, because remember that interview from one of the heads of Disney of wanting to keep the show going, so... stranger things can happen. But one can only hope. One can only hope. And for the last time until changes are being made, give the show a shot. You won’t be disappointed.
