Bob's Burgers Season 9, Episode 4 Review: Candy Heist and Decoration Battle 2k18 | yahoo201027's Bob's Burgers Reviews

It’s that special time of year again, kiddies. The time where ghouls and goblins come out to play. The time where screams and terror comes through fruition…that isn’t a daily occurrence by some random ass hat. And of course, the one day a year where if you’re a child, first off, I don’t know how you made it to this blog without anyone noticing? And second, trick of treating. Unless your names are Louise, Gene, Tina, Andy, Ollie, Rudy, and Darryl who got their stash stolen, then…uh…this isn’t their night. Yep, in this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, the kids are on DEFCON Mode Number 48 when the Belcher kids found out that their friends’ stash got stolen on Halloween night, all while Teddy takes on a rival handyman, only for things to taken a bit too far in my spoilerific review of the Fourth Episode of the Ninth Season, the Seventh Overall Halloween episode of the series, titled, “Nightmare on Ocean Avenue Street”.

This episode has gone full on balls on the wall with the kids trying to hunt down the person responsible for stealing their friends, and later each one of the Belcher siblings’ stash of candy that they got during the night. It’s like taking the phrase “like stealing candy from a baby” to a literal level, only where it’s the kids who got their candy stolen. And the kids aren’t gonna let this one go. Tracking down the perpetrator, which lead them to Wonder Wharf and well, you’ll know the rest during this review. It was good to be the least, but also somewhat predictable when it comes to who done it?

And the subplot…let’s just say, didn’t suck this time. First time in forever, am I right? And of course, it focuses on the adults but this subplot for this episode has Teddy going at it and giving it his all when taking on the new handyman in the block and my god, Teddy is really outdoing himself when it comes to which building has the most spectacular decoration for the holiday. That’s like if you and a rival have a Super Bowl party only to end up getting things out of hand come the halftime show or around the third quarter and decided to conjoin the two together. But for now, let’s get to the review and talk about…the main plot of the episode.

The seeds are now being planted in what appears to be a very long night for the Belcher kids as they prepare to head out for trick or treating. Seeing the street being closed and businesses putting up decorations. And just as everyone is getting ready for the biggest night of their lives, of course, the Belchers got a flyer from Dr. Yap, mostly because it’s Halloween, and a lot of kids are going to eat a lot of candy. Which of course, equals cavities. And dentists are really gonna have a hard time dealing with a lot of cavities. Halloween to dentists are like Black Friday to store employees. But of course, the kids decided to ignore it and head on to get ready for the night. Now, let’s talk about what the kids’ costumes for this year’s Halloween episode. And let’s begin with Gene…

Gene’s style of costumes can be…random at times. Whether it’s dressing up as Queen Latifah in her UNITY days in Season 3 or Turner and Hootch in one in Season 5 or last season with…grape. This year, Gene goes as another combination like with Season 5 but this time, with both famous people named Andre. Andre the Giant and Andre 3000 merge into one and named it Andre 3000 the Giant. Andre the Giant, of course, the wrestler. I don’t know anything about wrestling. I had to search the guy up before the episode aired. Andre 3000 on the other hand, know that he, like yours truly, is an Atlanta native. He was in a band called OutKast, the band responsible for the song “Hey Ya”. And of course, one time, had an animated series around the late 2000s on Cartoon Network called Class of 3000. Yes, that was a thing. Surprising that it didn’t even make it to Crossover Nexus.

Then to Louise, it mostly have something to do with movies. In Season 3, it’s Edward Scissorhands. In Season 5, it’s Ryan Gosling in the movie “Drive”, the trailer I mean. And in last season, it’s Anton Chigurh from “No Country for Old Man”. This season, it’s the girl with the dragon tattoo, in reverse. It’s the dragon with the girl tattoo. Neither one of these movies that I have ever watched. And then finally, Tina.

Dressing up as a nun with a briefcase. Tina’s style of costume is mostly comes down to wordplay at best. In Season 3, it’s her being a mummy’s mommy. Wrapping herself up in toilet and the same goes for a doll that she used to carry throughout the episode. In Season 7, she was supposed to be a hot mess, name of the costume she was supposed to wear, until Tammy stole it, so she had to become a sand-witch, which is of course, a witch and a sandwich in one. And then last season, dressing herself up as a zombie…wearing Linda’s clothes. So in this week’s episode, it’s her dressing up as a nun with a briefcase. Thankfully she didn’t see that new nun movie. Otherwise…yeah.

It looks like it’s gonna be a good night for the Belchers kids once the trick or treating commences following the kids getting their candy, including the one that they wanted the most called Sticky Sugar-Booms. In which they describe the taste of the candy as one bite and the syrup…well, it’s like tasting beer for the first tim…actually, no. Try tasting food that you never ever been to and you worry that it’s gonna suck balls, only to find out that it actually taste quite good. They got into the store. Got the candy. And are it along the way. So it looks like this might be a good night for the Belchers kids, but if you think this is gonna end in a positive note like that? Well, you’re sadly mistaken because it looks like while the Belchers having a fun time, after approaching both Jimmy Jr and Zeke, who aren’t in their costumes, well, Zeke maybe, because of the mask. But Jimmy Jr isn’t in full on costume. Anyway, after meeting up with Jimmy Jr and Zeke…

Their friends Andy, Ollie, Rudy, and Darryl got their candy stolen. Andy and Ollie, dressed up as peanut butter and jelly, got their stash stolen by someone wearing in a devil costume. Rudy, dressed up as Paul Rudd’s character in “I Love You Man”, got his stash stolen by someone in an astronaut costume. And then poor, poor Darryl, dressed up as what appears to be Peewee Herman, got his stash stolen by…someone who was dressed up as Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th series. And now because of seeing and hearing that their friends now got their candy stolen, Tina, Gene, and Louise are now on DEFCON alert mode number 48 and be on a lookout for the perpetrator behind the stealing of the candy and of course, find who’s responsible. And when that is going on, the viewers, mostly the people over at social media sites like Tumblr and Twitter are already playing the guessing game on who’s responsible of stealing the candy. When Louise said that the signs could point to the teens. Beginning with Zeke and Jimmy Jr, since…they’re teens. Tina and Darryl are teens but Darryl’s already the victim and Tina…about to be sooner or later as the heist continues. Speaking of becoming the victim.

Gene’s now the latest to get his stash taken. Adding the number in their group getting their candy stolen up to five. Number 48 has now risen to number 64, leaving both Tina and Louise the remaining ones to have their bags on their hands. So it looks like the teens option…still not thrown off the table. As the kids now continue to get the candy into…their hands and mostly pockets. You think that, and I don’t know if this would be a smart move, have a backup bag in case your bag gets stolen. And I don’t know where I’m going with this, so Imma move on before I’m making things worse.

Oh yeah, and Tina now becomes the newest victim in the great bag snatch of 2018. Raising the number up to six. And the DEFCON level has now risen to 91. Louise is now the only one left with a bag in her hands. Having Gene, Tina, Rudy, Andy, Ollie, and Darryl creating a huddle around her to prevent the incoming perp from snatching her candy. But does that help?

Absolutely not! Louise now becomes the last victim to get the candy bag stolen. The number has now risen to 100. You just declared war my friend. And now, the kids begin to hunt down the perpetrator in a gorilla suit skating down the sidewalk. And it was a major footrace for the kids tracking down the costume wearing criminal. They’re not gonna stand down. They’re pissed. They’re tired of being the victim. That son of a bitch needs to go down hard. And they lost him once they reached the intersection of the street. And if you think that all hope is lost? Think again, here comes the bus.

No, not THAT bus.

Yep, that bus. The only bus left in the open on Halloween Night and hey…it’s that driver from Season 5. The guy who wrongly got Linda to the wrong destination. It’s been a while. My god. Speaking of buses, this week’s episode of Doctor Who…oh boy. Lot of chills and tears ready to fall out of my eyes, mostly on the end. Man, the writers aren’t holding any punches with that episode. Anyway, the chase is getting more intense by the moment as the kids are nearing the gorilla suit wearing individual when suddenly…

Ooh…total wipeout. Dude, you’re no Tony Hawk, but uh…where the hell do you even learn how to skate? Because learning moves from video games…ain’t the best place to learn some moves. You think that with the perp now down to the ground, recollecting him or herself, you think that as of this moment, while the perp is down, this would’ve been the time for the kids to tell the bus driver to stop the bus, let the kids out, and ram towards the perp, take the candy, beat up that person and unmask and beat up some more, and ran back to the neighborhood. But nope, the perp decided to stand up once again and ran off and the bus driver decided to stop the bus, not because of what I said earlier, but more of, “Yeah, this is where I drop you guys off. I have other routes to do. Don’t tell your parents about letting you kids into the bus by yourselves. And uh…yeah, Happy Halloween.”

The chase leads the kids over at Wonder Wharf and ran towards the haunted mansion attraction called Mutilation Mansion. Great place to hide you and the kids’ candy. Anyway, nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, the kids decided to step into the mansion to find the guy, or girl. You’ll never know. And by all, I mean Tina and Gene stayed behind and decided to coward their way out of the mansion while Louise, Rudy, Andy, Ollie, and Darryl step inside the mansion and probably stumble into their deaths despite that it’s only an attraction. And nothing too serious that almost killed them like…I don’t know? The fort? But yeah, the smol crew decided to stumble into the mansion and the first thing that they have to endure is the main hall by the stairs where they stumble…

A guy on the stair well that got Darth Maul’d…

A guy  in chains via Medieval era torture of being stretched to death. And…

A killer lumberjack wielding his axe about to decapitate either of the five. Good luck sleeping tonight, kids. If this review were to be rendered to be on YouTube, pretty sure YouTube might take it down the moment this was shown…that, and copyright issues.

Goddamn it Europe. Get your shit together.

Louise, Rudy, Andy, Ollie, and Darryl made it out alive and must hold hands, by the way, if you’re a Rudy/Louise shipper…

…same as the verse with Gene and Zeke earlier when Gene was being overly dramatic. Anyway, the five made it out alive and had to huddle together for safety and not used for potential human shields when Darryl found the guy in the gorilla suit heading over to the Ballroom of Blood attraction inside the Mutilation Mansion and while they head over there to catch the perp once and for all, Gene and Tina decided to have a nice little chat going on, despite that their sister and their friends are trying to catch the perp like a lion trying to its prey.

Louise and her friends finally confront the guy in the gorilla suit inside a ballroom full of body pars in each and every table with red lighting and windows having rain of blood coming down from the window like…let’s say entering the heart over at a science museum for the first time. Not as the student who gets excited or bored over it, more of the line of the one being a punk bitch. But yeah, they finally confront the guy who just snuck out from one of the tables…well, more of him trying to run while Louise, Rudy, Andy, Ollie, and Darryl are being scared for their lives, about to wet their pants, and about to enter weeks of therapy when all of a sudden, both Gene and Tina finally decided to ran towards the guy and finally, finally…

Pin him down and got the attention of the remaining kids scarring for their lives. Finally pinned him down. Okay…ask me this…WHY DIDN’T YOU DO THAT BEFORE?! Like no, seriously, that time during the bus ride, that would’ve been a good time to strike back while the gorilla got fallen off the skateboard. But nope, because…plot convivence and what not. In Tina and Gene’s terms, they finally got the son of a bitch. In football terms, that’s a holding, five yard penalty, first down.

The kids finally got the guy pinned down and well, time to go all Scooby-Doo on this shit and finally decide to find out who’s the ass hat responsible for stealing the kids’ candy throughout the night and the person responsible reveals to be…

Dr. Yap…ah! Okay, who here knew that it was gonna be Dr. Yap who would steal the candy from the kids? Yep, it was Dr. Yap who decided to steal the kids’ candy that they worked so hard to get. And the reason is simple from him…he doesn’t want to be around after Halloween and have to deal with a lot of kids and getting their cavities filled day after day, patient after patient. Again, Halloween to dentists is like Black Friday to store employees. They don’t want to deal with that shit. So Yap’s best idea to not get involved of filling kids’ teeth following a cavity and want to head over to the mountains for a winter break. Pretty sure that isn’t a good idea. Like robbing a bank…or committing tax fraud. The kids tells Yap where the candy that he stole from everyone is at. In which Yap respond that the bag full of candy, every kid including theirs, are about to get burned over the incinerator. In which the kids now run over to the incinerator and make sure it’s not too late. In which, the guy behind the incinerator was about to do the job, until the kids stopped him and telling the guy to not burn the bag because it has the candy inside. Despite given orders from Yap to burn it all down. And the kids decided to tell Yap that burning all the candy down isn’t a good idea and that this is the one day a year where…typical Halloween stuff, go to someone’s home or business, threaten them with the offer of candy, and then boom, you got candy. That’s what the kids are trying to say. But Yap kept on playing the worry card and worry that eating too many candy can result in rotting of the teeth. But then they replied back that they have disposable teeth, most of them already got their adult teeth. Yeah, worry about the dental problems…next to getting a stomach ache. And razors. And meth. And…a major worry to Rudy since unless you didn’t know that he allergic to chocolate that only resulted in him getting a rash on his back.

So Yap finally raised the white flag and decided to have the kids have at it with the candy, but since the bag is really full of candy, and I mean really full, they can’t just eat it all. Nope. They decided to share it. And by that, I mean give the candy that Yap stole back to the kids who were victimized by the fiasco earlier in the night. Even some that didn’t even fall victim. Fuck, Tina decided to have some of the candy that were stolen to both Zeke and Jimmy Jr, the two that decided not to trick of treat. But Tina went all “have at it” and have at it, it shall. This was a good main plot of the episode despite that the whole game of who done it gone somewhat predictable. But hey, again with the good main plot. Fourth time in a row. But now, to the subplot…

Wait…the subplot didn’t suck this week? Huh? Well I’ll be damned. This was a good subplot to watch so far this season of Bob’s Burgers despite that it’s another round of Bob, Linda, and Teddy being put in the back of the bus and take the subplot route, just be thankful the streak of bad subplots since episode one of the current season finally comes to an end.

You have Teddy telling the Belchers that the store next door, the very store next door where the intro kept on showing different store names every episode, that the owner hired a new handyman named Glen and…oh boy, he got some major competition in play and on the one night where the decorations come into play as the street is getting ready for a handful of kids coming in for trick or treating. So that’s where of course he asks both Bob and Linda to have him decorate outside the restaurant, thinking that they hired him to do job. So it looks like both Bob and Linda have no other choice but to do and have Teddy have it.

The competition between the two handyman outside their respective owners’ place was something to watch because it’s mostly Teddy trying his best to put the best Halloween decoration put up to place, but it looks like just as he putting in the finishing touches into the decorations, he gets one upped by Glen. Teddy put up a spider on top of the house. But Glen have an animatronic bat swirling around the front side of the building next door.

When Teddy tried to follow Glen’s footsteps and have the spider move via remote control, Glen one up Teddy once again, this time have a ghost projected in front of them. And that right there is where Teddy is about to waive the white flag and have Glen have at it and being declared the winner of the night, but Bob on the other hand, said to Glen, “Nuh uh, bitch. Don’t call Teddy out just yet.” That and he now decided to help Teddy out when it comes to the decoration battle of 2018.

Of course, before that, he now has to go into costume dressing up as Bruce Springsteen, in which Linda don’t see it and thinks of it of a…discount Rambo. Anyway, Bob decided to help Teddy out be adding some touches into the spider on the house walls but adding some chainsaws attached to its limbs. And some other tools…are we recreating the spider like it’s the freaking Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Or have the spider goes as an employee over at The Home Depot? That is ready to draw some blood? Next week’s Doctor Who have spiders, so uh…oh boy, for the people who have a fear of spiders. I have to feel sorry for Darryl after the main plot closes like once coming towards the Belcher’s place and see the spider on the wall…cause you know he has a fear of spiders. Yeah, things were going fine until the spider decided to go out of control and go willy nilly around the house, though not creating any damage to the property, more of the line of being mentally scarred for the trick or treaters and…

Jesus! That bat will now not live to see another day. Yeah, so Teddy’s spider brutally murdered the bat that Glen set up. Teddy went a bit overboard when it comes to this little competition and begins to feel bad as we now transition to the aftermath of the I don’t know if you want to call this a potential bloodbath between the spider and the bat? Where we have Linda apologize in behalf of Teddy to the owner of the store next door where we have the reason why Glen had to outdo Teddy when it comes to the decorations for Halloween night, not in your typical “Hey, I’m an ass hat and I like to win” type of style. No, found out the reason is mostly because Glen wants to impress Teddy. In which Teddy is shocked that he was someone who looked up to him. You could say that…Glen has a senpai in the form of Teddy. Or if you’re on the Internet…ship. So the subplot didn’t suck. It was a good one to watch over and well…let’s hope this continue for the episode in…two weeks. Whoops, spoiled the surprise.

Reaction/Thoughts:

So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? This was a good episode, not saying best so far in the season, this is only the first…second month of the new season? And it’s already too early to tell, but this was a pretty good episode. As for where I rank this one into the Halloween episode list? This episode…would go on towards…fourth place. Putting Fort Night from 2013 down to fifth. Missing the top three spot where “Hauntening”, “Full Bars”, and “Teen-a Witch” are currently held.

The main plot, like the previous three episodes, was good to watch as we see the kids’ perfect night for trick-or-treating turning upside down when finding out that their friends’ stash of candy got stolen. And of course, on alert while trying to get more candy into their bags until Gene becomes the first Belcher to get his stolen. Followed by Tina. And then the triggering point hits the fucking wall when Louise becomes the final Belcher to get her bag stolen and resulting in the siblings, the Pesto Twins, Rudy, and Darryl going after the perp terrorizing them throughout the night.

The kids’ costumes were good as well, from Louise dressing up as the girl with the dragon tattoo in reverse to Rudy dressing up as Paul Rudd’s character from the movie “I Love You Man”…hard choice, may have to go Rudy on this. I like Rudy’s costume in this week’s episode.

The game of guess who’s the perpetrator seems…somewhat predictable on when it comes to the person responsible for terrorizing the night and steal the kids’ candy. It was okay for the fans to play the guessing game. Some people have Logan in their option. Some might say…not Fischoeder. Pretty sure Fischoeder would never do that. Not Mr. Frond. Don’t think he would have the balls to do so, said the guy who rigged an election during his seventh grade year. And then some have Millie up their mind but…I don’t see that. Mostly because of two things: Braces is one. Though there some people with braces that can still eat candy. I don’t know, I’m no orthodontist. And of course, her and Louise’s friendship…blossoming. Again, like last season, Twilight Zone writing. Still feels like the Twilight Zone. Still hard to believe that the Washington Capitals won a Stanley Cup. But no, almost everyone and their mothers, including myself, knew that it was gonna be Dr. Yap. Mostly because…it’s Halloween. And he’s a dentist. And he doesn’t want to do that. He ain’t gonna do that. But of course, just as the candy was about to be burnt into a crisp like a barbeque party gone wrong, the kids decided to tell the guy behind the incinerator not to burn the candy and tells Yap to just let the kids have their Halloween, even if it means willing to take the risk of getting your teeth rotten. And even have the kids to share the candy that was stolen back to the others, even to those like Zeke and Jimmy Jr who aren’t even interested in doing trick-or-treating, getting candy from them. It was a good main plot of the episode.

And the subplot didn’t suck this time. It was somewhat enjoyable. Mostly on Teddy trying to be the best handyman there is when it comes to the decoration scene. Teddy is really trying to give it his all when it comes it. But it’s like whenever he tried to put up the spider on the wall of the Belcher’s home, the business next door, thanks to Glen, one up him and have a bat that can spin around. When Teddy tried to make the spider move, Glen put up the projection of a ghost. And with Bob’s help putting up the chainsaws onto the spider that Teddy put up earlier…yeah, that bat was doomed right from the beginning. That of course, got a little overboard, even in Teddy’s standards. Just be thankful that things gone a bit smoothly following that little fiasco. And of course, Glen’s reason on why he’s doing the work and outdoing Teddy at his best. He was just trying to be inspired from him. Nothing said getting attention from the I guess…only handyman in town, like outdoing it in the decoration game. But yeah, both plots didn’t suck this time and that’s first for a while. I like that. So all and all, I think this episode is all treats, despite the guessing game is somewhat predictable at best. I give “Nightmare on Ocean Avenue Street”…

…a 9 out of 10. Like I said, both plots of the episode didn’t suck and although that the whole guess who’s responsible when it comes to who stole the kids’ candy seems predictable, knew that it was Dr. Yap from the start, it doesn’t even downplay the whole episode from beginning to end. And the subplot, who knew that it wasn’t gonna suck? And it should be that way as the season progresses. No rushing for the writers. But what do you, the reader, have a say about this week’s episode? Do you like it? Do you hate it? Did you predict that it was gonna Dr. Yap being the perpetrator? Which costume from this episode was your favorite? Tell me what you think in the comments below.

No new episode this upcoming Sunday due to the World Series between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers but tune in on November 4 as the Belcher children learn about the dangers of taking the high road of revenge leading up to the return of an old face that we haven’t see in a very long time in the Fifth Episode of the Ninth Season, “Live and Let Fly”.
