San Diego Comic-Con 2023 Day 1 Recap: Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake News and Thoughts | Fandom Update

It’s that time of year once more, folks. And this year’s Comic-Con is going to, if not already, be an interesting one. Primarily because if you haven’t read or watched the news or checked on social media, y’all already know what is going on and most shows and movies withdrawing from promoting content in a panel or doing some signings. And before y’all can call me out, I’m in full solidarity with both the Writers and Actors Guild who are currently in the picket line and if you want to help out, and yes, I read the rules and guidelines from the SAG-AFTRA folks despite I’m not a member and just a fan who wants to give out my thoughts, links to help the actors and writers for paying the bills because they can’t make ends meet, as well as businesses who are affected by the strike, I’ll leave those links at the bottom of this article to contribute. And my message to the people of the AMPTP and any Hollywood executive and CEOs: Give them what they want. Give them better pay and not have them being treated like ragdolls for inhumane use, primarily with the use of AI and scanning their likeness. In short: Pay the actors and writers, cowards...no balls.

Onto Adventure Time and man, what an info dump from what I can find from the depths of Twitter while trying not to get into a rate limit, thanks a lot for something that is super unnecessary, Elon. But this was the news that Adventure Time fans wanted to hear amid the strike. It’s been almost two years since the Distant Lands series ended with the Peppermint Butler episode, You’d probably think that this should be the end of the road for anything Adventure Time related when it comes to content. It becomes a distant memory as the day progresses...but with the streaming wars going rampant and each day new stuff getting announced, hence, everyone on the picket line wanting streaming residuals, not to mention, banking on people’s nostalgia for profit, here we are. Announced back in 2021 for a Fionna and Cake spin-off series and two years later, might as well dwell on what we know from the panel...that I have to go through Twitter in the comfort of my home.

So this is what we know from Adventure Time producer Adam Muto during the panel and we got some interesting stuff to know when talking about what we should expect for the upcoming series that is set for release on August 31 over on Max. And looking at the trailer below...

Here’s the trailer by the way, and an interesting concept at the start of the trailer with what appeared to be the city either before the Mushroom War or some reality where it didn’t even happen. We know that Fionna and Cake are gender-bent versions of Finn and Jake by the Ice King with his fanfiction, rather friend fiction just without the likeness as if he’s Tina Belcher, don’t want to make things too weird. But the trailer at the start shows what looks like the city with the characters that we knew from Ice King’s stories throughout the original series taking each role in the city whether it’s Fionna as a tour guide, Prince Gumball as a barista, Marshall Lee as a street performer, and everyone else in position throughout the trailer and it’s a list to state out. And also a few easter eggs like a hat on the hotel sign that resembles Magic Man’s hat and also an alarm clock on the nightstand by Fionna’s bed that resembles BMO. Not to mention, the statues outside of the aquarium that resemble the Ice King’s penguins, one of which is Gunter. And I think that one person on the bus with the green hair and flowers attached...I know that random person taking a nappy nap while being on the bus with Fionna is supposed to resemble a possible gender-bent version of Fern.

So to sum up the trailer, it’s pretty much the standard protagonist being bored with their life as if their life has no meaning or is living a mundane life who can’t make ends meet and want to explore for once in their life. It’s sort of like that with Fionna but can see her concerns towards her cat Cake and why she’s acting...well, off. Probably of boredom. And before y’all can say that it almost sounds like another Fredinator series, maybe you heard of it, Bee and Puppycat...which I never saw...sue me. But this is coming from a tweet from Comic Book Resources when covering the Adventure Time panel, and it quotes, “The spinoff was an opportunity to put Fionna in a non-magical background, just living day to day.” So having the trailer go through everything when it comes to the different worlds, being by imagination like her and Cake taking the Finn and Jake roles of being the heroes would be the way to go for this series. Mind you that the Fionna and Cake series is coming from the minds of the Ice King in a few episodes of the original series dating back to Season 3. Speaking of the Ice King...

The Ice King, rather, Simon Petrikov. We ain’t done with him just yet since he is the reason why we have Fionna and Cake in the first place. The poster leading up to the panel and the one that came out earlier today alongside the trailer shows that even though Fionna and Cake are in the spotlight, I mean, they’re the main characters after all and their names are on the Adventure Time logo, gotta have ol’ Simon involved for the ride. Between the various scenes from the trailer that shows the days of the aftermath of the Mushroom War when trying to control his mental state while trying to protect a young Marceline from the current timeline with him trying to keep himself together as if he’s not fully out from feeling the effects from the crown that corrupted him that led to him to become the Ice King, giving Simon some focus is something that should be interesting to go through. Sure, we got that in “Holly Jolly Secrets” with the tapes to episodes like “I Remember You” and “Simon & Marcy” with him and Marceline having some history. Hell, he was one of the few humans that were remained pre-Islands miniseries alongside Finn, Martin, and Moe. Marceline too but she’s half-human and half-demon from Hunson. And Susan, before Islands, before the two-part episodes “Preboot” and “Reboot”, was a mystery before finding out that she’s a cyborg, though “Dark Purple” was pretty much the first time you’re getting that idea with the item on her head.

BMO had their due with the “BMO” episode. Bubblegum and Marceline had theirs with “Obsidian”. Finn and Jake with “Together Again”. Peppermint Buttler and Abracadaniel with “Wizard City”. Hell, Susan, rather, Kara had hers with the “Islands” miniseries. Simon had his moments in certain episodes but with Fionna and Cake, and mind you the series will be set after “Come Along with Me” but before “Obsidian” as said from the panel. Hell, there was a clip that was shown in the panel from the show that showed Simon fishing, and this is from a tweet thread from CBR, at a lagoon and accidentally pulled up a sea monster, in which, because he’s free from his crown and is no longer the Ice King since the crown now belonged to Gunter, turning himself into the Ice Thing after making a wish from the crown, leaving Simon defenseless against the sea monster that he accidentally conjured up while on a fishing trip and spoiler alert...Finn.

An older Finn since this is in-between “Come Along with Me” and “Obsidian” who had to come and save the day. So a Finn cameo in the show was the highlight for everyone from the panel alongside the trailer and information from the show and what to expect, as well as bringing Simon into the picture. Now that Finn is brought up and will be the grown-up version that we saw briefly at the end of “Obsidian” with him coming out of an RV alongside his great-niece Bronwyn after Jake’s apparent passing and being late than never after dealing with the monster living in the cave in the Glass Kingdom. As for whether or not him being defenseless because he was powerless to defend himself and have Finn come in to save him... Nah, I don’t see it. You’d really think that the show would have Simon go through a trip of recollection and try to keep himself together because he was powerless against a sea monster? Then I don’t know what series you’re watching. So Finn coming back, despite being a cameo, was a surprise to everyone’s ears. Would not be surprised if the other original cast made an appearance like Bubblegum or Lumpy Space Princess or BMO or even Marceline. Marceline would make the most sense because again, she and Simon had history going back to him being her unofficial guardian during the early days of the aftermath of the Great Mushroom War. And before y’all can say anything, Adventure Time did it first before The Last of Us with a random guy and a little girl teaming up to survive an apocalypse. Just putting it out there.

Oh yeah, and also Rebecca Sugar is coming back to the show as one of the songwriters. Coming home to lend a hand for what might be an interesting series once it comes out on August 31. As for whether or not I’ll watch the series...hell yeah, I’m watching the series. The fuck do you mean I’m not planning on doing it? I’m gonna watch it once it drops on August 31. Are you hyped on Fionna and Cake? Anything that caught your attention from the trailer? State your case down below in the comments.

Donate over on PayPal, Patreon, and Ko-fi pages to help your boy out in both improving the page and help to pay the bills to keep the lights and hopefully, I do something for content...hopefully. Don’t know about tomorrow for Day 2 of Comic-Con because that’s Bob’s Burgers and The Great North and with the strike that is going on and the notion that screenings will be replacing the full panel because of the strike, I guess it’s a wait-and-see. So you have to follow me on social media for whether or not we’ll get a panel or a screening even though I’m not in San Diego for the convention. Any given Sunday between now and tomorrow. At least it’s unlike last year when Bob’s Burgers canceled their panel and had to replace it with a screening of the “Some Like It Bot” two-parter at the last minute. This year, if there’s a change, it’s understandable. Solidarity comes first. Sucks but we can manage and fingers crossed for the writers and actors to win this war and get the deal they want approved. Speaking of which, donate to help out the writers, actors, and businesses affected by the strike, links are down below...

And until...well, tomorrow or who knows, hopefully, tomorrow, wash your hands, wear a mask, get vaccinated and boosted, and a reminder that you’re loved, you’re beautiful, ignore the haters, and I’ll see y’all later. And seriously...Hollywood, y’all better fucking pay the writers and actors and accept their demands.
