Bob's Burgers Season 13, Episode 19 Review: The 2023 Belcher Family Crustacean Rumble | yahoo201027's Bob's Burgers Reviews

Only a few more episodes left in the season and with the shows and the playoffs in both the NBA and NHL already taking place, it's gonna be a hectic few couple of weeks as we're nearing the season finale of Bob's Burgers. As well as The Great North. As for whether or not for the remainder of the season where The Great North should have its own review? I may but at the same time, it should be back here in the Bob's Burgers review to serve as the halftime intermission portion of the review. Hopefully, I don't like...I don't know...go under burnout leading up to the season finale. Because that'll be bad. Also, the ballot for the MVP of Season 13 of Bob's Burgers should be out sometime this week, so just a head's up.

In this week's episode of Bob's Burgers, the Belcher kids decide to participate in a wrestling league in costume and put on a show to please the crowd as Linda on the other side of the episode decides to try out a 21-day habit for some reason in the nineteenth episode of Season 13 of Bob's Burgers, titled "Crab-solutely Fabulous".

The art of wrestling has been around for many years. And I mean many years when people want to ruffle and tussle that can harm your opponent just for the fun of it. Whether it's by an old-fashioned duel or as part of an extracurricular activity like a sporting event based on the sport, it’s there and it’s drilled into our lifetimes. Even if there’s a danger of posing potential injuries to the person from the vertebrae to the head that can cause possible CTE. I mean, I don’t know jack shit about wrestling but I know that it can cause some issues with the body. Okay, I got that from a John Oliver piece about the WWE, but you know that wrestling, despite that it’s all performance and sticking to the script as if you’re watching a Broadway play but for stunt performers, it can create a hassle for the body to handle.

Did I mention that I have never even seen a wrestling match? Never watched a single match in my lifetime...well, on TV. So, the idea of wrestling never piqued my interest, to begin with whenever it's being brought up in any form of media. Sure, the memes are there and wrestling, mostly coming from the likes of giant wrestling corporations like the WWE or AEW, but I have never seen a wrestling match in my life. Let alone any of the fighting competitions like the said WWE and AEW, as well as UFC, boxing, and any martial arts tournaments. Hell, slap fighting is becoming a name for itself the more it's garnering attention from the public. So again, I don't know anything about wrestling, and if you'd think that I would have a hard time talking about this week's episode because you have the Belcher kids partaking in a wrestling event...I once covered an episode about the kids playing a game of Ga-Ga ball a few years ago and I didn't even notice that was a thing before that episode came to light. Other than that, let's see what this episode has in store as I break this down with my lack of wrestling knowledge, this is "Crab-solutely Fabulous".

The episode starts with business as usual with everyone doing restaurant work, well, everyone but Linda, and we'll get to her in a bit but we begin with the kids, primarily Louise and Gene being bored with Louise messing around and trying to pick a fight with Gene by using condiments while filling the ketchup bottles. Not even a full minute into the episode and already you have Louise and Gene feeling, mostly Louise being bored and trying to pass the time by messing around as Gene is filling the empty bottle. Them being bored from doing restaurant and reading Louise's language from the start of the episode have you noticing where this is heading for the next half-hour...or 21-22 minutes of runtime without ads.

Teddy enters the restaurant to get himself a bite to eat where he notices Linda drinking a lot of water as of...now since the episode has just started with Linda telling Teddy that she's trying out a new health regimen that Ginger told her to try out. The new regiment being drinking water. Which, okay? I mean, nothing wrong with drinking water. We gotta keep ourselves hydrated. So the article that Ginger read for Linda to try out is that she should develop a new health habit for the next 21 days. Don't know what habit Ginger picked up to get the idea from an article that may or may not be useful to help create a healthy lifestyle but that's not going to stop Linda from doing it and starts drinking water daily. Ten glasses a day is what she is doing. The average amount of water to drink is about eight. That's two more over the limit. It's like turning your bladder into crates of water balloons waiting to be thrown at the battlefield. Also, who gets their information from articles these days? Yeah, some do because why not as long as you carefully read through each paragraph to get a better understanding? But nowadays, people turn their attention to TikTok to get their information about staying healthy. Hell, an AI would be the thing that people used nowadays. Yeah, something tells me that we're not going to win the next war if people continue to fall into clickbait. And that's a full guarantee right there.

As Linda tries out drinking water by taking ten cups a day, surprising that Linda didn't bother buying a shipment of water gallons, let alone a giant water bottle with a handle where the cap is at on the top of the bottle to drink as if you're expecting her to chug the whole thing like it's a frat party, Teddy, to everyone's surprise except not really, wants to have his order to go since he'll be busy for the day. The reason for him to pick up his order instead of dining in as per usual is that he’s heading over to the recreational center to do a little odd job he’s been doing as of late. That being him setting up the stage for a wrestling match, catching the kids, mostly Louise’s attention when the word “wrestling” came out of Teddy’s mouth for his job to set up the stage. And the wrestling league that came into town is called the “Crustacean Nation Wrestling Federation”, which picked up steam at one of the Lobsterfest events, because of course, everyone liked it, and became its own thing ever since. They're in town for the event and Teddy has been hired as one of the people to set up the ring. And that itself has the Belcher kids to see the behind-the-scenes look. Seeing the people putting on their costumes. The ring is set up for use once the night of the event takes place at the community center. Enough for the Belcher kids to tag along with Teddy to go to the community center to see everything that is going on over there. And with that, it's a go for the kids to go to the community center to see the wrestling league visiting town. Though you have Bob being concerned about the kids' wellbeing as if they're gonna join the league...a concern that is going to age well later in the episode.

Teddy and the kids arrive at the community center once the next scene hits with the kids being given the first look at the wrestling league as it's taking place with the ring being set up and people getting into their costumes and rehearsing for the upcoming match where they come across with the manager/showrunner/creative director/show announcer Carol, voiced by Jane Lynch, noticing Teddy and the Belcher kids, mistaken Louise, Tina, and Gene as one of his own...which they're not. The kids are only here to see the behind-the-scenes of the wrestling league as the stage is being set up. Of course, being a crustacean league and everyone is dressed up as crustaceans, it would make sense for Gene to bring up his allergy to the shellfish before making his and his sisters’ way to their seats. But as the moments passed, Louise noticed something regarding one of the two performers rehearsing where they noticed that something is missing from their moves before taking the ring with Louise intervening and decides to help out by suggesting a few pinch clinchers and bringing a decapitation move as a finisher. Switch the heads and the moves and bingo, bango, we're good to go.

As well as Louise's new suggestion for the league and that is to allow her and her siblings to participate in the event. Torn at first for Carol because she doesn't know if it's even a good idea to allow kids to participate in a wrestling event knowing the injuries that it can contain that could put them in harm's way. Would be a possible PR nightmare if they allow kids to wrestle unless there's some sort of junior league and were to be a part of the school's wrestling team, which they are not. Louise only wants in because she wants to feel the thrill and excitement of it. Something that the show is currently lacking for Louise as of late in this modern version of the show. But with that, Louise, Tina, and Gene are now members of the federation and are ready to haul some ass once the first night of the wrestling match arrives. Hopefully, that won't cause any issues for the Belcher siblings as they're offered an unofficial contract to join the league per Louise's request. Don't know how much each of the wrestlers who participated in the league gets paid? Make you wonder.

Once the night hits after arriving back from the community center and telling Bob and Linda about them becoming wrestlers as a tag team for their upcoming event to start the second act of the episode, the kids have to create their wrestling personas because that's how wrestling works. You gotta be in costume, build your character as if you're in a D&D session, and maybe a few moves that have to be part of the show. Costumes and character building are the two important things when joining the league. Why else have you seen wrestlers in both the WWE and AEW coming out in costume, whether in spandex or only wearing a speedo? Similarly, take a look at Mexico's version of a wrestling league, Lucha Libre, where it's like the WWE, but it has one important rule in that and that is of course, don't lose the mask. If the mask is off, even if it's by accident, you're done, son. That's how the game is played. Have none of y'all seen Mucha Lucha back in the day? That should probably tell you. That's your identity and you don't want to lose that. No wonder I compared Louise's bunny ears to a luchador's mask leading up to the movie.

The kids dive through the box for additional items for their costume-making since they'll be going as pickles. The pickle costumes that were made for the parade back in Season 7's "Paraders of the Lost Float" with Gene having a purple pickle costume that was first introduced in Season 10's "Poops!... I Didn't Do It Again" because remember, Gene in Paraders doesn't have a pickle costume because he went as Beefsquatch with the burger suit on. So the additional stuff for the kids is as follows: For Gene, it's a boa scarf since he's going for the diva look because every wrestling league needs to have a diva. For Tina, it's a pair of giant sunglasses to mold into the more mysterious personality into her wrestling persona. And for Louise, she wants to serve as the wild card even though she’s the leader of the tag team since this is her suggestion, her request to join the league. And of course, Louise pulls out a red and yellow wig for her costume. But not just any red and yellow wig as if she’s preparing to root for the Kansas City Chiefs next season...

But the same wig that Tina wore in Gene’s fantasy of the Itty Bitty Ditty Committee both in the episode of the same name (both in the fantasy and the credits) and the movie. As well as the near end of the movie where the Belcher kids alongside Rudy, Peter, Darryl, and the Fischoeders performed in their get-up a week after the whole Grover issue. So the callbacks for this episode with Gene's shellfish allergy and Tina's wig from the movie have been hitting as the kids are ready to go for their upcoming match in the wrestling ring. Oh yeah, and there's also Linda on the toilet after drinking ten glasses of water a day and turning her bladder into a ticking time bomb. All thanks to a change in health when doing the regimen.

The next scene and going into the next day with the Belcher kids participating in doing their first practice session with Louise telling Carol about their performance, mostly their finishing move with Louise suggesting bringing explosives into the mix as part of the show to make things flashy and explosive to woo the crowd. Something that Carol wouldn't be okay with the kids bringing pyrotechnics to be added into the mix for the kids in their performance. But besides that, the kids are ready to go as planned for their upcoming match as they’re preparing to participate in their first-ever match as seen in the next scene with the kids still in costume and preparing to head out and ready to take the stage. And you still have Linda trying out her new regiment because you gotta have that in there even though I feel like it shouldn't be because it felt like filler. Also, if the Belcher kids want to try out wrestling and want to practice should moves...why didn't they ask Zeke to help out? I mean, he's a member of the wrestling team. He often times roughhouses Jimmy Jr. So I don't know why the writers didn't bring Zeke to step in and at least provide support for the trio, as well as give them some advice and moves to share for their upcoming match. Don't know why they didn't bring Zeke into the mix but I guess the damage is already done. Should've brought him in though.

The night of the match arrives with the Belcher kids in their costumes waiting for them to be called into the stage as the match between the two performers that Louise talked to earlier in the episode does the suggestion that Louise made for the finishing move and lo and behold, they did what Louise told them with the cut and switch. It's not the official name with that Louise suggested but it is what it is. So once that match has concluded, it's the Belcher kids' turn to introduce themselves to the crowd and attempt to please the crowd...it wasn't the best start for them once they entered the ring and wrestled each other. Even though it's supposed to be a wrestling match...it doesn't feel like your usual wrestling match and instead, this feels like nothing more than a game of pushing and shoving. Babies have more fights in them than the Belcher kids in this match. And you know what they say, the first time can be slow. You can’t expect to make a full impression on your first try, especially if you’re a rookie. Even if once the match ended for the night and Carol wasn’t too pleased with the Belcher kids’ performance despite...you know, some concerns coming from Bob (Linda also but she had her own issues to deal with) about putting themselves in harm’s way, and was threatening to pull them out from the lineup in future events before Louise stops her and suggests that she should up the ante by going back to the writers’ room and suggest that the siblings should expand their storyline by adding a villain. Because, and again, I don’t know anything about wrestling, there’s always a villain in a wrestler’s storyline that he or she created to entertain the crowd. And Louise creates that storyline by adding the antagonist in the storyline...

By shoehorning Teddy into the mix in hopes to please the crowd. As seen in the montage leading up to the next match at the end of the second act of the episode with him dressing up as a sponge and as seen during rehearsals with the kids practicing their moves onto Teddy like a walking doll figure thing used as a punching bag. Of course, you also have the kids practicing as well without Teddy around with Louise being the most active and the most fascinated over the wrestling shtick leading up to their next match. Like disturbing Tina's sleep in the middle of the night by going on her bed and shining the blue light from the laptop to talk about everything about sea sponges as if she's studying to become a marine biologist. Fitting because the theme of the wrestling league is underwater themed that is currently set in a town by the Jersey shore. And also noted some annoyance coming from Tina as if she doesn't want to do it anymore and even though it's fun to be on the stage, it almost feels like Louise's time in the ring and her wanting to feel the thrill and excitement of putting on a show is going to get her and Gene killed. Well, not "killed", but probably going to end up with a broken limb or two once this episode is over.

This leads us to the next scene of the episode as we prepare to close out the first half of the episode with the next match with the kids once again being the closers to the match and unlike the first match where it was an abysmal first performance of an introduction to the crowd, it's a complete 180 for everyone's reaction with the kids and Teddy putting on a show. The kids as wrestlers have a villain in the storyline of their match with Teddy, as the sponge, cornering them by the edge of the ring as if they're about to be defeated until they pull pool noodles out of their asses, and I can see marine biologists and people with a brain calling the show out for something like a sea cucumber as what the kids are dressed as and probably call the show out for possible misinformation but knowing that it’s the Belcher kids and this is a wrestling match where each match happens to be scripted, the Belcher kids pretty much told logic to go fuck itself to secure them the win over Teddy and giving the audience in attendance a good show. That and also people now wanting to carry pool noodles for their own as if the Belcher kids have created a movement from their match on the second night of the event. But other than that, the Belcher kids went to the drawing table after their abysmal first performance and it became a complete 180 once night two hits. And you could say because of people enjoying the performance that the Belcher kids pulled with them beating the ever-living shit out of Teddy with pool noodles would be a good thing because you're having fun. You're having the time of your life being the center of attention. You'd think to yourself that maybe things shouldn't be too bad. That's where the second half of the episode comes in. Oh yeah, Great North, it's own review once more for this week. I know, I know. I don't know why I should give it its own review but uh...you might as well label me as a masochist for tiring myself out when doing back-to-back reviews in a single week despite being a few episodes left in the season. Gotta somehow do something to tell everyone to go watch the show as summer approaches. Onto the second half of the episode we go.

Entering the second half of the episode with the Belcher kids brushing their teeth after a night out performing at the wrestling ring with Tina and Gene already starting to feel the effects of the dangers that wrestling poses to their bodies. The two siblings are feeling the effects of the dangers that wrestling can produce to their bodies with them dealing with some bruises on their bodies. Not to mention, their school stuff and probably their social life being shoved due to Louise's antics. But that's not going to stop Louise from doing everything she can to put on a show and feeling the thrill and excitement of being in the ring. Though out of the three people of the four performers, as we continue to go through the third act of the episode, it's not even Tina or Gene who are feeling the effects of how much wrestling can put a strain onto...well, everything. Sure, Tina and Gene did miss out on some stuff, mostly on their schoolwork and social life and whatever the hell they do daily...

It's Teddy who is dealing the effects the most as we enter yet another montage with the kids practicing for their next set of matches and we get to the following nights of their match and being hit numerous times with pool noodles alongside being pounced by the kids...well, Louise and Gene because Tina numerous times during practice and the night of the match misses Teddy when trying to pounce on him. Typical Tina. Besides that, Teddy is dealing with the effects of what wrestling can do to a person once the montage is over. And not just him, but also Tina and Gene who had to put up with Louise's antics as if they were ready to hang up the costumes. And at first, when seeing this episode, I thought Tina and Gene would do that and be ready to have an early retirement while the iron is hot and Louise would have to disagree that would result in a sibling vs sibling match-up to force Louise to hang up the costume. Of course, that did not happen because that would add to the "Louise learns a lesson" category that everyone, including myself, is feeling tired of seeing. And also Linda still trying out the 21-day regimen of drinking a lot of water. And it's getting to the point where she's pretty much harming her health than benefiting her. Not to mention that Louise, Tina, and Gene are given potential permanent spots as the closers by Carol when beating the crap out of Teddy and the people love it.

Teddy, Tina, and Gene don't once we get to the next scene with the three feeling a bit battered after each match throughout the past few days. With Teddy taking up the most damage physically, wouldn't rule mentally after being beaten by three kids in the past few nights with his back feeling some massive pain. On the verge of his backbone being broken into pieces. Not looking for the guy when dealing with some back pain and he should take a rest for him to heal or go to a chiropractor to have his back treated, but it looks like taking a break won’t be necessary as Louise tells Teddy that they’re on the daily as closers for future events since everyone enjoys the stuff they’re doing at the ring with Louise suggesting doing new moves to please the crowd even further to make it a show, much to Teddy, Tina, and Gene’s dismay because it looks like they don’t want to do any more of this. Feeling sore and missing out on stuff, but again, that’s not going to stop Louise from having fun in her time in the ring. And convincing her to stand down isn’t going to stop her. Then maybe an apparent injury that could pose to be life-threatening could do the trick. Okay, that last one seems like I’m rooting for someone to die, I don’t roll with that. You never root for injury or death on someone. I don’t condone that shit.

The night of the next match arrives as we prepare to close out the third act of the episode and going into the fourth with the Belcher kids and an injured Teddy taking the stage once more to entertain the crowd to close out the night with the kids doing what they’ve been doing for the past few days, sticking to the script in beating the crap out of Teddy with pool noodles and pouncing onto him from the edge and ready to unleash their new move onto Teddy. They did but it comes with a consequence as a result of this. Remember Teddy's sore back from earlier in the third act leading up to this moment as we prepare to enter into the fourth act?

Yep, Teddy's down with a broken back. Lying flat on his back and unable to move. All of the participants helping the kids to make it a show has its consequences and...what do you expect? Wrestling can be a dangerous sport at times, primarily because of the injuries that can pose to the body. As well as the head, if you suffer through head trauma with her head, bashed onto the ground. Sports can be fun but it can also pose a problem where you push yourself enough to create trouble that can prevent you from performing. Whether being a back issue like with Teddy or worse, a concussion that could trigger CTE. Whether being wrestling, football, or any other sport, the athletes put their bodies on the line, and mind you that even though they're professionals and want to give the city their all, they're human beings, and seeing a performer being badly injured whether being a concussion or suffering through cardiac arrest, it's a sight that you don't want to see, whether from watching it on TV, online or live from the stands. But that's not going to stop everyone in attendance from seeing the match and want the match to continue despite Teddy's injury. Like...come on! There's a man down with an injury and you're worrying about the matching going back to suckitude if the match comes to an early end? Fuck off. Show some sympathy for once in your life. So, rather than suspending the match and having to deal with the backlash from the audience, seriously, fuck off for not showing concern for an injured Teddy with a broken back, the show must go on from Louise to continue the match.

By dragging Bob and later Linda into the ring to serve as emergency wrestlers to take the stage to finish the match in Teddy’s place. You’d think that they should move Teddy out of the ring and put him in a stretcher, let alone a bench, but gotta keep Teddy lying flat on his back as if it’s part of the show where the sea sponge has been defeated and have the sea cucumbers to deal with his cohorts. And by that, I mean for the kids to perform the finishing move and pounce on Bob and Linda to wrap up the show with the two adults lying on top of an injured Teddy and once again, the crowd is pleased and enjoyed the show. Though again, soulless motherfuckers probably don't give a damn about someone's well-being as long as the show doesn't suck. Other than that, the show comes to an end with the Belchers and Carol checking up on Teddy as he lies on the bench, and just when Carol wants the show to continue for the kids to perform because again, people love it, knowing that we're in the two-minute warning...

Louise decides to go into an early retirement along with Tina and Gene. Because of course. Though this isn't more of the line of the usual stuff we have seen with Louise's episodes in this current era of the show where she learns a lesson. There are some instances of that in the final few moments of the episode, it's more of them feeling the pressure from their bodies when doing the matches throughout the week that ultimately led to Teddy with a broken back. He's not dead as seen in this screenshot above because the hit from the kids didn't cause his heart to stop, because that would be a different story if that happened. Don't know if this episode was made before or after, think this was before the situation with Damar Hamlin at the start of this year when he nearly died on the field, but that would be a scary thought if Teddy were to suffer cardiac arrest with a broken back while being on the ring. Other than the injury with Teddy, the kids felt burnt out from doing the daily shows, as well as dealing with some bruises on their bodies and despite hanging their costumes for one final time, they did have shown some fascination with the sport and of course, Louise whispers to Carol's ear that this isn't the last she'll leave the stage. Ready to pull a Brett Favre, Tom Brady and put on the costume once more if the time is right. Or at least join the school wrestling team if you’re fascinated by the sport. Still think Zeke would’ve been incorporated into the episode.

Ending the episode with the Belchers, by the way, knowing Teddy's injury, looks like he might be out for a week or two because it looks like the episode next week may or may not be present and there's no new episode on the week of May 7 but looks like the Teds-ter will be placed on IR for the next few weeks, with the family eating a bowl of ice cream as Bob and Linda have to shoulder the pain that the kids inflicted onto them on the final show of their performance as amateur wrestlers. But at least Linda's little side story comes to a close with her hitting the pause button on her regiment. Still think that the Linda subplot shouldn't be added to the episode. Just saying.

Reaction/Thoughts:

So all and all, what do I think about this week's episode of Bob's Burgers? Well, if I gonna be honest, I can see some people having mixed feelings towards the episode, it's not a bad episode. It's an alright episode with some faults gotten into the episode that may have downplayed it. This mostly comes from the subplot with Linda trying out her new regiment that Ginger suggested to try out, which in my opinion, feels like it shouldn't be added into the episode at all as the episode progressed from start to finish. But besides that, it's an alright episode with some enjoyable bits. Again, I don't know anything about wrestling and the terms but the fact I got through the episode without any wrestling knowledge, let alone accusing the sport of being fake and scripted, yeah...it's surprising how I got through the episode without making an ass of myself.

It was enjoyable in most parts with the Belcher kids being a part of the wrestling match while the league is in town with the kids being creative to please the crowd once entering the league despite fearing of a possible PR nightmare for the league to allow kids to fight in the league. But that didn't stop the Belcher kids, mostly Louise, from putting on a show and as someone who often times watches sports to pass the time, the writers didn't try to half-ass it for someone like yours truly, who, again, has never seen a wrestling match in my lifetime. Other than that, it's somewhat enjoyable. Something coming out from Season 7 or 8 of the series with this episode.

Other than that, it gave the viewers what's the process of what wrestling had in store when the kids took up the sport. From coming up with their personas and costumes to dealing with the fans' reactions to the show from the first match to the last, again, fuck y'all for not showing sympathy towards an injured performing and worrying that the show would suck once more, it was a ride for the kids to perform and didn't half-ass it into another attempt in Louise learning a lesson. I mean, it's there at the end but that's mostly because they're feeling burnt out and Teddy's injury that almost left him...not too serious enough to leave him paralyzed, but more of a few broken bones and requires a chiropractor, call in that that chiropractor from Season 7's "Zero Larp Thirty", being the icing on the cake. I could see Louise wanting to try out the sport in the future. Maybe her joining a wrestling team since she got the experience from the league, but it comes down to...well, continuity. And headcanons from the fans. But anything goes.

So final thoughts, aside from Linda's subplot that I feel like it shouldn't even be added into the episode, it was an alright episode with some enjoyable moments and if you're a fan of the show who watched wrestling, yeah, I can see that this episode is made for you. If not, then maybe it'll be for you even if you haven't even watched wrestling. Let alone giving a crap. So I'll give "Crab-solutely Fabulous"...

A 7 out of 10. But that’s my opinion and I wanna hear yours in the comments below about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers. Only a few more episodes left in the current season of Bob’s Burgers and this upcoming Sunday’s episode should be an interesting one to watch because we’re getting some lore, baby. Hell, yeah. And I say that because the next episode has the family listening through an old radio and it looks like the person who the family is listening through the recording is from Bob’s side of the family in the twentieth episode of Season 13 in “Radio No You Didn’t”. Seriously, they need to stop recycling old episode names and start thinking of making new ones.
