Bob's Burgers Season 13, Episode 5 Review: Strictly Come Dream Crushing Dancing and Ball Catching | yahoo201027 Bob's Burgers Reviews

Normally, this would be the week where we get our holiday episode, and then the week after that is when we go on a break. No, that ain't it. You can thank the new playoff structure for messing up with our scheduling when new episodes come out as if we're bull rushing our way out. Though knowing that we would be six episodes in come next week and then a break after that, there honestly can't be any issue whatsoever once we get the winter season. Other than that, the Phillies made the World Series. The same goes for the Astros. In the Doctor Who front of things, the Jodie Whittaker era of the show has come and gone with “The Power of the Doctor”. Didn’t expect David Tennant to make a return, spoilers by the way. And uh...oh yeah, The Great North is in the Final Round. Yeah, I’m not making this up. The Great North and Judy Tobin are in the Final Round of the Voting Tournament. And they did so by upsetting the number one seeded Marcy Wu and Amphibia. The Great North awaits either Black Clover or Attack on Titan in the Final Round in less than a few weeks. For now, to the review.

In this episode of Bob’s Burgers, Tina plays cheerleader by supporting Jimmy Jr at his dance competition as the rest of the Belchers go ball catching with Bob and Linda, for the billionth time, compete by who has the most balls that they can catch in my spoilerific review of the fifth episode of Season 13 of Bob’s Burgers, titled “So You Stink You Can Dance”. And if you're wondering when watching TV and noticed that the subplot has gotten more attention than the main? Honestly, I'm dumbfounded too. Don't know why. I get the World Series is coming up but...really? Really? Seriously, check the promo images on the Wiki. Most of the images are on the subplot.

Okay, it's more of Bob being a jealous being than them competing against each other in episodes past. But other than that, it's one of those episodes where you get mixed emotions when watching it from start to finish. Mostly if you’re from one side of the aisle or the other. If you’re a Tina/Jimmy Jr shipper...yeah, this is pretty much y’all’s episode because of the content we’re getting, as expected from what I said back at the end of last week’s episode review. If you’re a Tina/Zeke shipper, yeah...you might as well get some scraps from it. I mean, you have Zeke complimenting Tina’s speech at the end of the episode. Not to mention we got some interaction with them over being concerned about Jimmy Jr's well-being when dealing with an instructor as if this episode is doing its best to parody the movie Whiplash.

But other than that, it’s pretty much one of the episodes where you win some, you would lose a lot. Not saying that it’s a bad episode, but it’s one of those moments where you would have to finish watching it for the first time and decides to rewatch it a few times to get a better understanding. Mostly coming from both plots of the episode. At least there’s some improvement to be added into this season that has...some issues so far and it’s only Week 5. Don’t think that we should probably get ready to press the panic button. We’re not the Green Bay Packers or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Just calm down, man. Just calm down. That being said, let’s get to the review and break this sucker down and whether my criticism might destroy a few people's dreams. This is “So You Stink You Can Dance”.

The episode starts with the Belcher kids getting their lunch for the lunch hour at school and it didn't take long for the kids to stumble across Zeke and Jimmy Jr with Jimmy Jr doing some stretches right in front of them and blocking their way to get to their table to sit and eat their food. Though Tina doesn’t seem to mind because knowing Tina...well, a front-row seat to him stretching and seeing that butt of his, her words. So the reason why Jimmy Jr is currently stretching at the moment is that he has to get ready for something important this upcoming weekend. That being him enrolling in a dance class over at the community center with a well-known instructor named Spencer Blankenship, who according to Jimmy Jr, is well-known and a top modern dance instructor in this side of the century. And also the previous century and even taught one of his students who went on to become a backup dancer to Gloria Estefan. Which is a pretty huge deal according to his mom. Currently living alongside his brothers, almost solidifies that we might go for another season without Jimmy Pesto being around since the whole mess regarding him being a part of the insurrection.

Jimmy Jr seems excited and is ready to spend his weekend over at the community center and the thought of him being taught by a well-known dancer is pretty much his potential ticket to the top. Though Zeke seems to be a tad upset over him attending the seminar because it’s the weekend. Weekends are meant for Zeke and Jimmy Jr to hang out. And it looks like it would be the first time to not have him around and to be on separate occasions. I would say that he might pull something to mess up Jimmy Jr's chances to become a better dancer, just to get him back, but he wouldn't do that. That's his guy. The best that he can do is to support him. That's what Tina is doing when deciding to attend the seminar to support him, but it's Tina, and knowing her on-again/off-again crush on the guy, it's not surprising. Though the Tina/Jimmy Jr shippers are going to gobble this episode as if Thanksgiving came early this year. Already setting things up for the main plot with Tina and Zeke supporting Jimmy Jr on what he's doing and wanting him to succeed.

And we get to set up the subplot of the episode now that Tina has RSVP'd her self-invitation to attend Jimmy Jr's seminar where you have Teddy bringing up a small side job when telling Bob and Linda that he'll be using his friend's fishing boat to catch a few home run balls to collect from the waters during a game at the Wharf. Yeah, with the town's star pitcher being out due to an injury, it would spell a bloodbath for the Wonder Dogs going up against the Barracudas, but hey, free balls! And all of that for them to make a few bucks and that's more than enough to get the family to get involved in a subplot that you know it's going to feel dragged out. And out of the two people who will be going with Teddy and the kids on the boat, it will be Bob who will be tagging along. Mostly because he never caught a home run ball throughout his entire life whether as a kid or with Linda in his early adulthood and hoped that this time would be the opportunity for Bob to catch the damn ball. So the subplot to the episode has been set up for the episode and it's for the best to have it become its separate entity. Tina has her thing, which we'll get to that right away. And the rest of the family and Teddy have their own. Well, Bob has to tag along. Linda will be staying put and watching over the restaurant, but not for long as the episode progresses. Onto the main plot we go.

We transition over to the community center with Tina and Zeke taking their seats on the bench as they prepare to watch Jimmy Jr for his class. Of course, the duo stumble upon an old face that we haven’t seen since Season 7 in Flips Whitefudge, who was planning in participating in the class...but is denied because he doesn't meet the age requirement, being under the age of 18 and the guy just turned 18. Therefore, he can’t join the class and has to sit out and watch the other kids perform.

Leading to the introduction of the dance instructor in Spencer Blankenship and already, the guy is throwing in some tough rules and would make things incredibly difficult for the dance students and Jimmy Jr as if we're following how the movie Whiplash panned out. He's no J.K. Simmons' character from the movie because he has to go all out and would have to put in a lot of donations into the swear jar. But that's more than enough for Tina and Zeke to put on their concerned faces when the instructor becomes critical of the students and of Jimmy Jr. Critiquing how Jimmy Jr dances, thinking that it's floppy and even gives him a nickname of "Floppy Scoops". Already giving a warning sign to Tina and Zeke on what is about to come for this seminar. A teacher out on a mission to destroy some kids' dreams of getting into the dancing business. I get that getting into rhythm is important when it comes to the dancing world, but last time I checked, you're not competing in a reality show. There are no cameras flashing. Do whatever you’re doing. Of course, practice makes perfect and if it means breaking a few bones and spirits, then according to Spency boy here, so be it.

And the mood gets sour coming from Tina and Zeke when watching Jimmy Jr getting criticized by Blankenship over his dancing skills when trying to get to the rhythm along with the rest of the kids in the seminar as if we’re watching a building that became a hallmark to the general staple to the public getting demolished by some asshole because they don’t like the “foundation” or how it was built. That’s what Tina and Zeke are watching as the seminar progresses and yeah, not looking great in their view when watching Jimmy Jr in the middle of the floor. I mean, I have to give the episode some pointers on what they're doing. Sure, the Tina/Jimmy Jr shippers are currently eating this episode as we speak. Still, getting past the shipping aspect of things for this episode, you have Tina and Zeke interacting and being on the same boat over what they're seeing. They're concerned about Jimmy Jr's well-being. They're seeing how strict the instructor is treating Jimmy Jr and how his criticism is weighing him down. As if it's for the best for them to tell Jimmy Jr to opt out of the class but at the same time, they also want to support the guy. Quite the predicament those two are dealing with as the main plot progresses. And while Tina and Zeke are watching over what is pretty much a possible plane crash before taking off from the airway...

We switch over to the subplot with the Belchers and Teddy minus Linda on their way to park by the stadium where they hope they can catch a couple of homers from what is pretty much going to be a bloodbath coming from Teddy. Of course, it's all about patience when the player gets a home run with the ball far and fast enough for it to land in the water for someone to nab it. Looking bad for Bob because he didn't even bring sunscreen or a hat to protect himself from the sun and even though there are clouds in the sky, though we might as well treat it as a clear day, it would make things difficult for Bob to see. And also would get terrible sunburns. But it's more than enough for Gene to decide to go for a tan while they wait...by listening to the game on the radio. I would say use the phone now that Bob has a smartphone but those games aren't even live-streamed. You have to use the radio to listen to it to how far the ball goes and whether or not it lands in the water. The key to this game is patience. Though the idea of getting the wet balls so he can get the players' autographs and then sell it...dude, pretty sure home run balls aren't one of the items that should not be sold right away. It's yours to keep. That's it. Think you can sell if you die. Though I feel bad for the poor bastard who got the ball that we all thought was Tom Brady's last touchdown ball before his first retirement. So to spare the details for the next scene, it looks like the Belchers and Teddy under Bob will be going home empty-handed. Meanwhile with Linda...

She is currently watching over the restaurant putting in napkins for the dispenser while talking to Ginger on the phone. Yes, I know. The show owes us a face reveal from Ginger over that tease from last season. And they have to. They really have to. But other than that, as it appears that we’re going into montage mode, Linda had some fun with having the restaurant to herself. From spinning the stools to messing with the board, it appears that she is having herself a good time while the others are away. Though it's not the chalkboard that she messes with, the chalkboard with the burger of the day is usually written down. It's the other board where the sides and beverages are at. Messing with some letters and reattaching them with different words. Not in the way of saying she’s going rogue like what she did back in “Flat Top O’ the Mornin’ to Ya” where she had to dye everything green to celebrate the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. It's more of Linda being Linda as the rest of the family and Teddy will be coming home empty-handed. Starting to think that Bob might be holding them back. I mean, Linda is right there. Waiting in the green room to take his spot. And that is about to come later in the review.

Back to the main plot with the dance seminar and yeah, not a good look for Jimmy Jr as he struggles to get into the rhythm as the seminar is being dismissed for the day. Putting even more pressure on Tina and Zeke who are watching their boy being critiqued by Blankenship as the day progresses as if they want to step in and give Jimmy Jr the talk. Either by telling him to try to follow along and do it harder or opt-out. It's already not a good look for everyone here. Especially to Tina and Zeke and don't want to go through the Jimmy Jr slander but it's only one class. It's only day one. What's the worst that can happen to everyone in the room? Well...to add salt to the gaping wound, Zeke shows a video to Tina of his cousin Leslie doing some dancing and reveals to her that Leslie was once Blankenship's student and took the class much like Jimmy Jr right now. He was a good dancer similar to Jimmy Jr and had a passion for dancing to the beat and wanting to be noticed. Thinking that enrolling in Blankenship’s seminar would be his golden ticket to the top and instead, his dreams get crushed.

So you could explain why Zeke is acting off at the start of the episode. Sure, him not being able to hang out with Jimmy Jr is one reason to hate the seminar because he can't be around him if he's going to have plans like doing the seminar. Now you can add another reason and that is history setting things up to repeat itself. What happened to Leslie in the past when being under Blankenship's tutelage is going to happen to Jimmy Jr. You'd think that Zeke would let it happen? No. He doesn't want to attend the seminar but he had to support his friend in doing it and upon bringing up what happened in the past, he won't let the slander take place. The same goes for Tina when hearing about this. Sure, there's some denial and thinking that it's only the first day and things will improve as if it's the first day of the job, your dream job, and your boss is already calling you out for doing a shit job even though you haven't done anything wrong. So no, Tina would not let the slander pass by and thinks that it’s a good idea for her and Zeke to talk things straight with Jimmy Jr to drop out of the seminar before it’s too late. The only problem for them is that Jimmy Jr won’t budge and thinks that they’re both Negative Nancys as he makes his way out of the community center. Much of a daunting task for Tina and Zeke for what could be an impending disaster hurling their way in the coming days. If not, later in the episode. And knowing that we’re now halfway into the episode review for Bob’s Burgers, it’s now time for a short Great North mini-review intermission. Or as I call it: “Me waiting for comments of people accusing me of potential dick riding.”

Switching over from Bob's Burgers to The Great North for Week 5 of Animation Domination and in this episode, the town needed a dub for the state's annual boat parade because they're currently on a losing streak and they want to end it. They need a game plan to win the parade if they want to get their hands on that sweet, sweet plaque and also put the town of Lone Moose on the map. And of course, all eyes are on the Tobin family to get their asses in gear to win the parade competition. Though Wolf did find a minor nippit on the event when finding out while doing some research and alerting the town that there's a reason why Lone Moose haven't even won shit. Because there's no hot guy. The past winners of the boat parade competition: hot guys. Because of course. We might as well treat the parade as if we're holding auditions for "Hot Guy Monthly". That's what Wolf and Honeybee had to host to find their hot guy but no luck. Leading them and the rest of the Tobins to find the town's ultimate trump card to win the parade.

That would be this handsome hunk of wood that the woodcarver, named Archie, and this would be Lone Moose's golden ticket to them getting the plaque. And nothing can go wrong for everyone...until Wolf gets drunk and the wooden man will not become a real man and rather than going Pinocchio, he ends up auditioning for the sequel film to The Batman and doing his best Two-Face impression. Sure, the wooden man, Todd, getting badly damaged was expected. Sure, the town loses the event at the end of the episode. And even though the town gets another L and is expected to be added to its Wikipedia profile, at least you got Wolf to tell the town about the wooden man in a speech that got the townsfolk on board. But they still lost but at least they’re taking in with pride. Some moments were predictable but it's still a good episode if we're going to be frank here with the main plot.

The same goes for the subplot with Ham and Crispin trying to practice for the parade as the honorary boat boys for the event. Had some struggles when trying to get into sync as the boat once it passes through. Had to take advice from a random couple about the rhythm and almost have Ham and Crispin's relationship on the brink but just be thankful that we don't have ourselves a scare like with what happened two episodes ago. Let them do their own thing...even though that may have cost Lone Moose the parade alongside Wolf's accidental distraction of Todd the Woodman. But as long as the show doesn't give the fans heart attacks with the idea of Ham and Crispin's relationship being put on thin ice, then we should be good. Either way, certain things are predictable regarding the outcome but it's still a good episode. Looking at a 7/10 for "Woodfellas Adventure". Now back to Bob's Burgers and see a potential dream of a prepubescent teenager set to be demolished.

Onto the next day as we enter the second half of the episode with Linda taking center stage of the subplot after Bob failed to get a single home run ball. She's been waiting in the green room in the event Bob fuck things up to not get a single ball as if he's holding everyone back over at the water as another game of baseball is about to begin momentarily. But not before Tina comes in and asks Linda for some advice about the whole Jimmy Jr thing regarding what she and Zeke just saw and that today might be the day when Jimmy Jr's dream is about to come crumbling down into the ground and turn to ash before we head over to the next scene in Tina’s plot. But not before everyone notices the board that Linda messed with and already, it got a good reception from the kids before a sunburnt jealous Bob ends up fixing it back to normal as he now watches over the restaurant. Though he won’t be alone because he got Mort to keep him busy.

We transition over to the community center with Tina being the only one here as she waits for Zeke to drop by in an attempt to get Jimmy Jr to drop out of the seminar for his own good. Fearing that Zeke might be running a little late and here comes Jimmy Jr into the stage. And right before Zeke's arrival with Jimmy Jr apologizes to Tina for ignoring her calls and texts as he was too focused on getting ready for his next dance recital. Mostly on her and Zeke messaging him to drop out of the class. And speaking of the devil, Zeke arrives with Leslie in a mini bike. A long time since we last saw Zeke's cousin back in Season 3 and here we are again...ten seasons later and with a different hair color. Switching from a dark blonde to a brown much like with Zeke and gotten the people over at the Wiki to fix that in his profile at a rapid pace once the episode is done airing.

The three tell their best to convince Jimmy Jr to opt out of the seminar and needs to take the warning shot from Leslie about his experience in an attempt to get him out of the class because he, Tina, and Zeke don’t want Jimmy Jr to go through the same that happened to Leslie back in the day. They’re trying their best to warn Jimmy Jr to not go into the building and do his recital for the day with the way how Blankenship has been treating him in the past week. But of course, Jimmy Jr won't budge. Believing that all the criticism, all the slander coming from Blankenship is him wanting to work hard and perform better despite the warnings coming from Tina, Zeke, and Leslie and the calls for him to drop out. Accusing them of not believing in him and thinking that they're supporting his downfall. I made that last one up and they don't want to see Jimmy Jr's downfall in the world of dance but again, he won't budge and it looks like they got no other choice but to watch the demolition unless they can come up with a plan to stop the class before Jimmy Jr gets a turn. Either go full Tanya Harding and break his legs or interrupt the class. Or pull the fire alarm as the easy bet to go.

Back to the subplot and remember when I said in this review earlier that Bob may have held everyone back when trying to get the home run balls? Yeah, it appears that the question may have been answered correctly. With Bob earlier in the episode on the boat, the Belchers and Teddy got nothing in their possession during that game yesterday other than a sunburnt Bob and a tanned Gene. With Linda, it's raining baseballs for them to get and that resulted in Bob becoming livid as he listens to the game on the radio with Mort at the restaurant. As if there's a conspiracy going on over things not going in his favor. At this point, he might as well go back to the beach and find that seal he met last week and tell him what went wrong. Though I'm sure the rules of being a character in a sitcom is something that is way beyond its power. But it's more than enough for Bob to head back to the water and get himself a ball for himself. And I might as well wrap up the subplot before we get back to the main plot of the episode. Think it's better this way before I get to the closing reaction/thoughts to the episode.

Bob makes his way to where the others are, just as Linda and the kids and Teddy for him getting the ball in a desperate attempt to end his drought of catching a home run ball. And yeah, I said desperate attempt because it does. He looks freaking fracking desperate when trying to get a single home run ball while being on the kayak. Of course, he went overboard and fell off the kayak when trying to get the ball near him but ends getting picked up near his direction as Linda picks up yet another ball from her and the others’ direction. But at least one thing to close out this subplot, Bob finally got his home run ball after a small confrontation with a guy in a jet ski trying to get it but ends up giving it to Bob and have him laugh like a madman as if he just entered his Joker phase. Yeah, a really desperate attempt coming from Bob, and yeah, I agree there with what Teddy said about this. Him saying "It's sad how much he needed this," yeah, desperate. I mean, he got his ball. He finally got his first home run ball despite how badly sunburnt he is. But man, this has gotten to the point where it has gotten sad just to look at.

And now, we return to the main plot with Tina and Zeke in desperation mode as they need to think of a plan to get Jimmy Jr out as he and the other students are about to do their separate takes on their dance moves as if they're being evaluated. And to Tina and Zeke, this is pretty much zero hours for them as they're now going to witness Jimmy Jr's dreams of being a dancer ready to Thanos snap into oblivion. Though it wasn't long until Tina ends up storming into the circle and stops Blankenship from doing his evaluation of the students. Though the first time around was poor timing for Tina and Zeke because the first time they did it, it wasn't even Jimmy Jr's turn, and instead, it was a random student. But they did tell Blankenship to put into his place in front of the students and serve it as the first shot.

Once we get to the second interruption from Tina and Zeke, the gloves are coming off once we get to Jimmy Jr's turn. I mean hey, give Tina some credit for what she's doing to save Jimmy Jr's skin and dreams from being demolished by Blankenship. Sure, I don't ship these two because I don't wanna follow the status quo. And my thoughts on Jimmy Jr as a character...eh, it's a love-hate status for the guy in my opinion. It's tolerable, to say the least. But I'm sure that what Blankenship is doing to the guy is not supposed to be dream-crushing. He's a strict fellow but doesn't be a dick about the person's dance skills, even if it means using draconian methods and destroying a young kid's hopes and dreams just for everything to be perfect. But come on man, it's a dance class. People have the right to be themselves and you're treating it as if everything has to be perfect. Not everything has to be perfect. You're treating it as if the king is dropping by to see what's going on. And that is more than enough for Jimmy Jr to take Tina's word and decide to dance whatever his heart can beat to and it wasn't long until the other students jumped in as well. No dreams are being crushed in the making of this episode...it pretty much boils down to what the episode is trying to tell you to not be a dick. And by now, the Tina/Jimmy Jr should be full from consuming this episode. At least save some room for Halloween candy next week.

Reaction/Thoughts:

So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers? Well, it's a mixed bag when going through this episode from start to finish. The rewatch factor is there once you finished watching the episode in your first viewing. Mostly to get a better understanding of both plots. It's not a bad episode, there are some moments that I tolerate to possibly enjoyed. But it's not great either. It's in between. Some stuff land while the others pretty much skirted or haven't even taken off.

If you're a Tina/Jimmy Jr shipper, y'all are pretty much the real winners here for this week because of the stuff you all got with the main plot. Sure, you feel like something is missing and we already know what it is. Just calm down. You already have your episode. To me, it's the interaction that you hardly get between two people and having one certain situation to tackle from start to finish. That being Tina and Zeke. Not since "Crystal Mess" where you have the two teaming up with each other and have to deal with what Blankenship is doing to Jimmy Jr and fearing for the worst on how he critiques Jimmy Jr with his dance skills. Well, less of "Crystal Mess" because that's mostly more Tina-focused with the crystal. The only example that I can find with those two is "Midday Run" from Season 5. The point is that we got something coming from Tina and Zeke watching a tire fire in a minefield with Jimmy Jr being criticized by Blankenship and being overly worried about his wellbeing. Sure, when the synopsis came out, you'd probably think that Tina would serve as a distraction for Jimmy Jr. Thought Tina would root for Jimmy Jr at first but ends up rooting for another person. Start of the episode, you'd think that Zeke would do something to get Jimmy Jr out of the seminar by messing things up even though he would not do that because he doesn't want to hurt his friend. You can see Zeke being upset when noticing that he won't be hanging out with Jimmy Jr for the weekend. But this subverted some expectations and I have to give the episode some pointers with that and having Tina and Zeke go on equal footing when being concerned over Jimmy Jr's wellbeing. And I do hope we get more of that in later episodes despite my calls about Tina needing better friends. I mean, Zeke's not a bad guy. Out of the four that we got, he's tolerable. He is often supportive and respectful. It's there as long as we don't go through a freaking love triangle because the last thing we need is the fandom to have a civil war.

We have Zeke’s cousin returning in over ten seasons. I feel like he would’ve done a little more in the episode. The same goes for Flips Whitefudge even though he's mostly there on the sidelines. The announcers at the ballpark from Season 1 are back. Really hitting the nostalgic button for this episode for a bit. The animation at the end was smooth. I have to give the episode some pointers on that. But then we get to the subplot and other than Linda's time in the restaurant and messing around with the board, it would've done a bit more. Bob getting his first home run was predictable but more desperately when noticing that he was missing out and also the fact that he's been holding everyone back in the first game of what is pretty much a three-game series with him not getting any balls when he was on the boat and the opposite taken place once Linda takes the stage. I question if whether or not the seal from last week's episode is pretty much there just to spout bullshit. That is pretty much what it comes down to with this subplot.

Final thoughts on the episode, it's a mixed bag from start to finish. I enjoyed that little team-up between Tina and Zeke and want to see more of that in later episodes. Some characters who made their return would've been utilized and done some more other than brief appearances. The subplot would've been better, so it's average, just sad coming from Bob in his desperate attempt to get the ball. So I'll give "So You Stink You Can Dance"...

A 5 out of 10. Again, it’s not a bad episode. It had some “promise”. It subverted some expectations and had some touches to make the episode decent. Not a bad episode but it’s not that great also. It’s average. This is me being generous, folks. At least there's improvement to this season. But that's my opinion and now I wanna hear yours in the comments below. The Halloween episode is coming up this weekend with Louise and the other fourth-graders going on a field trip with something that caught her attention and wanting to investigate as the others compete for the school's costume parade in the sixth episode of Season 13 and the eleventh Halloween episode, yes, Halloween episode number eleven in "Apple Gord-chard (But Not Gory)" on October 30. No baseball interruptions for our Sunday night but once the episode review comes out, it won't be Halloween anymore. Might as well consider this as an early Dia de Los Muertos event even though no one here fucking dies unless you're a cow with a wig or a carnie.
