The third time I’m doing this. Thank god that there’s only like a few weeks away until the show returns on Valentine’s Day, meaning that I get to review the episodes again. That doesn’t mean I don’t like doing this. I don’t mind it. It was in the box back in 2019 and the start of the pandemic would’ve been something, mostly because of the dire need of money, but you already know this story by now. Episode three of the Wagstaff Students Character Discussion. Already done with Courtney in week one and Susmita just last week, now entering another contender into the ring to be discussed and if you haven’t checked my Twitter account on who’s the lucky bastard to get the spotlight, it’s none other than Kaylee Morganstern.
Kaylee's Personality
Much like with Susmita, Kaylee also appeared in only two episodes, meaning that there’s not a lot to talk about but unlike Susmita, her relationship with the characters are rather interesting during her time on the show and again, she only appeared in two episodes...in a single season. Which is Season 10, i.e. the previous season. So what do describe Kaylee’s character and personality as a whole despite the two episodes that she appeared?
Well, not much I could say about the fourth-grader. Guess the closest you can say about her is that she’s not a sociable person. Bit of an outcast really and I could possibly agree with that. I mean, I’m not a social person myself in my school days though I do have friends during that timeframe. Whereas Kaylee, we haven’t really explored her personality despite that in “A Fish Called Tina”, Tina was rather getting somewhat clingy when it comes to trying to force her to like her during that whole mentorship program, but in “Prank You For Being a Friend”, other than wanting to get into trouble by pulling a prank with the help of Louise for her to be homeschooled, she thinks that, and really told that out loud to Louise while ready to pull the catapult full of fake cockroaches, that she only wants out of the school is because she thinks that she doesn’t fit in and would rather continue the outcast lifestyle in locking herself in her house for the rest of her life. Fortunately, she did find a group that she can at least make friends with in the form of the Thinkgineers, alongside both Rudy and Zeke (who’s only there as punishment).
Other than being an introvert to the max in the likes that we haven’t seen, unlike the other people in different series where you have a character locking themselves in a dark room...and apparently, I just now quoting everyone during the quarantine in the early stages of the pandemic. Other than that, she’s a bit of a bookworm with an interest in the fantasy genre when reading a book series on a squire and shit with her mentioning a wizard cape. And no, it’s nothing like Harry Potter...nor The Lord of the Rings or anything Tolkien related. I mean Kaylee would dabble into that, though maybe in book form and not the films because there has to be that one fan who prefers the books over the movie version and would watch the movie, just to compare it to the book version. Much like with manga readers watching the anime version of a series and probably bitch and moan over the soundtrack and animation. Yeah, calling out the people who keep on attacking the director over the latest episodes of Attack on Titan. At least give Studio Mappa their due on what they’re doing. Other than that, might as well get to the relationship aspect of her character and Kaylee’s relationships when it comes to her history on the show is rather...interesting because the first person to kick off is not considered a friendship, or rather an ally at best, it’s more of one person being clingy and annoying enough for poor little Kaylee to issue a restraining order.
Kaylee's History and Appearance
So Tina Belcher starts off the relationship aspect; if you wanna call it that because if you already know the events of “A Fish Called Tina”, yeah...that episode wasn’t Tina’s finest moment. One of the moments that Tina was not fond of. And the whole mentorship program where you have the eighth graders pair up with the fourth graders is one of them for the pubescent Belcher child. Why in God’s green Earth that it’s a good idea to try to relive history for when you were paired up with someone like Kaylee Morganstern?
I know that this is Kaylee’s discussion post and it almost feels like I’m about to tear a new one for Tina’s behavior in that very episode. But Tina did shoot herself right in the foot when trying to play nice with Kaylee for the whole week of the mentorship program in hopes for them to have a friendship forming. Not in Kaylee’s case because when Tina awkwardly hugged Kaylee during their introduction, you kinda know that this car ride is now dealing with some issues along the way on the open road when trying to get to Point A to Point B in the Plot Expressway.
Don’t get me wrong, Tina did at least try to make a first impression with the girl. Kaylee is pretty much an introvert. Doesn’t like when people invade her space like what Tina was trying to do whether being the introductory hug at the beginning of the episode or trying to connect with the poor girl by trying to interrupt her reading time over at her lunch table and planning on reading a book that she has been reading throughout lunchtime...only to find out that the book that Kaylee was reading that Tina wants to talk about in an attempt to bond...is a series. That’s like watching starting Star Wars, any of the nine films or any of the spin-off series (whether being Clone Wars (being 2003 or 2008), Rebels, Resistance, Mandalorian) and realized that it’s a full-on series, the whole of the Skywalker saga, and need to binge away right away in case of another lockdown. Enough for Kaylee to request Frond to change mentors, and so he did, with Kaylee being Zeke’s little fish and for Tina being paired up with Rudy...in which Rudy comes crawling back to Zeke and leaving Tina with no fish...unless you want to count Louise as one even though she is Tammy’s assigned little fish.
And c’mon...relive the chili incident by twisting the words from your former mentor back in the day and hoping for history to repeat itself onto Kaylee...what was the goal here? What was the endgame for all of this? Accidentally spill the chili onto Kaylee and probably embarrass her in front of the whole fourth and eighth-grade classes only for you to come in to save the day like a goddamn hero? Gonna come in like you’re Stone Cold Steve Austin, cue the music, and save Kaylee from the embarrassment that you could’ve caused? Well, history did repeat itself...onto yourself during the ice cream social and have Louise to save the day. Yeah, Kaylee’s little...interesting relationship with Tina, even though this feels like me ripping on what she did in the episode, and let’s face it, that was very hard to watch on what Tina was doing to at least impress Kaylee. And pretty sure everyone else had the same idea.
Though there was some continuity once we get to “Prank You For Being a Friend” where Tina remembering that very long week with Kaylee liking being around people that isn’t her. But at least she did keep her cool while not going to live down that mental scar that she received earlier in the season. She, along with Gene, dressed up as adults when Louise has to help Kaylee out getting into trouble, and also later when Kaylee was feeling the rush of pranking, you have Tina trying to intervene to say that maybe she should not pull pranks and getting into trouble. So as a whole...yeah, that’s pretty much the only thing to describe Kaylee and Tina as a mental scar that Tina will never live down for the rest of her life. Kaylee’s relationship with Tina is pretty much the recap of “A Fish Called Tina”, meaning that...
Kaylee’s relationship with Louise is considered a recap of “Prank You For Being a Friend” where you have Kaylee somehow stalks around Louise, whether being in detention with Frond over the fake cockroaches and hide behind the bushes or trying to walk away with a book in her hand. It wasn’t until she and the rest of the Belcher siblings walk their way to school where Louise decided to walk up to her and explaining why she’s been stalking her as of late. And not doing a very good job at that as well. Millie Frock had done a better job with that, Kaylee. Pick a different egg. With Kaylee requesting Louise for her, being Kaylee, to get into trouble in hopes to be yanked out of school. And coming to Louise, who has a reputation of pulling pranks and getting into trouble, to teach the ways of the prank. To fall to the dark side in hopes to be yanked out of school, thus having Louise to agree to be her mentor as the episode drags on.
However, once we get to the second act of the episode, where the teaching of the pranks take place, here lies the problem for Louise when finishing up painting a baby carrot with paste and meeting up with Kaylee by the end of the hall just as class is about to begin. Knowing that despite that Kaylee came to Louise for help getting into trouble, these two are pretty much polar opposites. With Louise, she’s a natural when it comes to pranking. It’s probably her god-given right when it comes to the whole thing. Whereas Kaylee, the person who came to the troublemaker in Louise and wanted to get into trouble in the first place, is pretty much a rule follower. Thus seeing her through that scene, along with the montage of her trying to do stuff whether if it’s putting up a sign on the bathroom door, putting a hot dog into the pencil cup, writing on the board that is covered in eraser marks.
Sure, there were some issues during the whole process, and converting a rule follower like Kaylee isn’t that much of an easy task like it’s painting day over at art class and you’re being that smug and thinking that it’s going to be a breeze, only to find out that it’s not. But it took some time and Kaylee began to feel the thrill of what pranking is. But Louise thinks that both she and Kaylee need to up the ante when it comes to pranking and for Kaylee to get into trouble, thus entering the Thinkgineers with Rudy and Zeke (who is only there as punishment courtesy of Frond) in building something big. That something ends up being the catapult full of the fake cockroaches that Louise hasn’t been touched throughout the episode...not knowing that in between the scenes, Frond noticed that something is up and have her to spy. Something, something doesn’t let Kaylee fall into the dark side.
But Louise, despite accepting the offer, continues on working on the project with the help of the Thinkgineers and about to set fire to the course once lunchtime hits until Louise finds out what is Kaylee’s true motive in the episode revolving around her wanting to be homeschooled. And that is that she only wants to get into trouble and being pulled out of Wagstaff is that she doesn’t fit in. I get that Kaylee is pretty much an introvert in her own right, but...to say that Kaylee only wants to get into trouble and wanting to be pulled out of Wagstaff just because you have trouble making friends, hopefully finding the right kind, doesn’t mean that you want out of the school and to be homeschooled, or rather, lock yourself and being socially distant from everyone just because you haven’t made a single friend. Louise thinks that now it’s a good time to stop the process, but Kaylee wouldn’t budge and have to fight it out, causing them to be caught and landed themselves into Frond’s office with Louise telling Frond that Kaylee only came to her and wanting to get into trouble but for the wrong reasons. So I guess neither of them got into trouble but for Kaylee, because of the whole building of the catapulting cockroaches process, she somehow shows interest in joining the Thinkgineers, shocking both Louise and Frond over the decision.
Now, Kaylee joining the likes of the Thinkgineers by the end of “Prank You For Being a Friend”, it was alright for her to finally found her kind, being the type of people who she wants to be a part of, though while Tina...yeah, don’t know about that. But Louise regarding the episode, she did help Kaylee with pranking enough for her to get into trouble, only to find out about the real reason why she wanted out of the school. Like you feel sorry for the girl for not having any friends of her own, enough for Louise to stop the prank from having the trigger pulled courtesy of Kaylee. And while Kaylee at the end of the episode seems to be enjoying her time as a Thinkgineer alongside both Rudy and Zeke, and we’ll get to them, probably together since they both appeared in the two episodes that Kaylee appeared in, I wouldn’t mind both her and Louise to have a bit of a friendship forming following the episode. I mean, Louise did help out. She felt bad for what Kaylee is going through for not having any friends of her own. Sure, this isn’t like with Susmita and hoping for her and Tina to be best friends. Mostly because Louise already has a bestie in Rudy, but I could see both Louise and Kaylee at least try to get along outside of the Thinkgineers. Maybe in a future episode. That’d be nice.
To Zeke AND Rudy, and yes, I have to combine the two, and would be interesting once Kaylee’s relationship with the two were to pop up again once we get to the Rudy discussion and the Zeke discussion. Hopefully in the later timeframe. Hopefully around the summer because Rudy and Zeke have the most screen time, along with the likes of Jimmy Jr, Andy, Ollie, Tammy, and Jocelyn. Yeah, that would be the case though the fears of rehashing...they go last because it would help me try to find a way to twist around without sounding like a repetitive ninny.
With Zeke and Rudy when it comes to Kaylee, other than Kaylee is in the fourth-grade alongside both Rudy and Louise, Zeke was the first person because Kaylee did request Frond to switch mentors thanks to Tina shooting herself in the foot. Thus, Kaylee ends up with Zeke while Rudy goes with Tina...who then goes back to Zeke because Tina still can’t get over Kaylee ignoring her like that partner in a relationship who keeps on bothering in an attempt to get back together, even though the other is fine the way he or she is.
That leaves them in “Prank You For Being a Friend” where you have the two being a part of the Thinkgineers. Well, Rudy is a member of the group whereas Zeke, only there to serve as punishment. A punishment that is happened to be a fate worse than death. And that is coming from a K-8 school. Regardless, they, along with the other members of the group did help out in the process. The process stops short thanks to Louise stopping Kaylee from pulling the trigger. All that hard work to make one girl’s day something to enjoy. Though Kaylee did enjoy building it along with the group to the point where she ends up joining the group by the end of the episode. And doesn’t seem bothered by it and thinking to herself that she found her people.
Though you gotta admit what Rudy was trying to do in trying to save Louise and Kaylee from getting into trouble by taking the fall, along with the entire group, but came in a little late with him now finding out that they’ve been off the hook with them not getting into trouble and Kaylee now punching her ticket to the Thinkgineer train. I mean hey, I’m probably down with a little fourth-grade clique with Louise taking the helm in the leadership and having the likes of Kaylee, Rudy, the Pesto Twins, Jessica. That would be something. I dunno about Millie though. Let’s put her in pending status...yeah, let’s go with that.
But that’s about it when it comes to Kaylee Marjory Morganstern and...she’s an interesting character. Not lies there regarding her character as a whole regardless of the two episodes that she appeared in, both in just the last season.
