Bob's Burgers Season 10, Episode 14 Review - The Centennial Review w/ Song and Lights | yahoo201027 Bob's Burgers Reviews

Hello people and random Bob’s Burgers fans and we have finally made it. Number 100, not the episode number for the show, that was a very long time ago. I mean this is review number 100 for yours truly and holy cow, can’t freaking believe how far this have come. Six years since I’ve been doing this, hit with some massive bumps in the road that caused me to not do parts of Seasons 7 and 8, most to say the least and back at it mostly because page needs funding, but hey...here we are, the centennial mark of the Bob’s Burgers reviews. And of course, the episode that marks the monumental episode which also kicked off the review from the very beginning since 2014...with a competition episode. So how are they gonna fuck this up?

In this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers, the students of Wagstaff, including the Belcher kids, compete to see whose song will be picked as the new anthem following some...insensitive portions found with the old one while Bob, Linda, and Teddy has to deal with more of Jimmy Pesto’s shit in the form of a new tent in my spoilerific review of the fourteenth episode of Season 10, titled “Wag the Song”. Marking this the 100th episode review for yours truly. Again, how are they going to fuck this up?

And apparently, they didn’t believe it or not. Another solid episode we got here to commemorate the monumental milestone much like with last week’s but with some misses to put it out there but it’s still a solid episode to enjoy. Of course, it’s a Tina episode, so it looks like an apology letter being made into one form of entertainment for what happened with the train wreck that was “A Fish Called Tina”. Though it does feel more like a Tina episode rather than like it’s the students of Wagstaff pretty much taking charge since this is a competition and various students, being Tina, Louise, and Gene, your usual three. But also have Jimmy Jr, Zeke, Rudy, Tammy, Jocelyn, and Courtney competing for whose song will be chosen. So at least they didn’t fuck it up but I’ll be the judge of that. And as for the subplot, it was enjoyable. There were some issues I have when it comes to the pacing though all and all, it did not downplay the episode, thus making it another solid episode. That being said, let’s on down to commemorate review number 100.

Kicking off the episode with the kids finally getting their photos from picture day and everyone got it and looking at the result from Louise messing around with her pigtails and form a moustache to Gene trying going at the whole crazy hair idea from last week with the whole spirit week thing that is pretty much pointless. Even the others got theirs and share their result though we only saw Tammy’s photo which looks like she’s going full pufferfish. And also got a glimpse of Jimmy Jr’s when handing it over and getting it back from Tina. Just be thankful things just as DVR and frame by frame on computers and phones are a thing, you can now stop photoshopping my logo with devil horns. Though we haven’t seen either Jocelyn’s or Zeke’s photos, so uh...release the cuts. Not kidding, release it. We want to see the full official cut. Although not everyone got their perfect picture taken, or rather supposed to get theirs taken because Tina is the only one in attendance who has never gotten her picture taken for picture day. And it’s not the first time, it happened time after time and you can thank flu season for being a massive bitch. And it ain’t looking good for Tina and she wants to be remembered, wanting to build a legacy once she heads out to the real world that is now pretty much a tire fire and wanna be remembered for future generations. Though there is a thing for that in the form of being recognized through talent being either celebrity, athlete, politician, etc. So it looks like a tough road ahead for the 13-year-old girl of the Belcher clan as everyone now head on to the gym for the assembly.

And apparently, the topic for the assembly is something is about to get the boot and no, it’s not Ms. LaBonz, who she thinks that she’s about to head off in retirement like an animal ready to be put down. But no, it’s not a person, but rather a song. The school’s song, something about them being whalers since the school team are the Whalers and the school mascot is a Whaler. Apparently, the board are forced to take the song down due to the fact that...there were some...issues that make some feel uncomfortable and here’s the lyrics to the damn thing down below.

We're the Whalers, we hunt in our whale boats We row across the water, and then begin the slaughter
With our harpoons, we stab them in the throats We hack them into pieces, and then we go to recess.
Yeah...looking really bad just reading or rather, singing about it. Cancel culture has finally land a hit onto Wagstaff over the insensitivity of whales and of course, whale hunters, because since we’re like less than a decade until serious shit goes down and whales are now becoming or about to become endangered species and animal rights groups ain’t having that and could explain why the song has to change and possibly the whole thing soon. It’s pretty much comparing the school song about whaling to pretty much the Tomahawk Chop. Now for anyone who doesn’t live in the United States, the Tomahawk Chop was pretty much used as chants for certain teams, whether if it’s college football in Florida State, the NFL with the now Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs, or in baseball with my team, the Atlanta Braves. And the Braves got into some hot water last year in the postseason that pretty much got some people’s attention and want the league to have the team to retire it due to the fact that it pretty much offending Native Americans due to that insensitivity. Might as well be the same with the Whalers song for Wagstaff that they are now forced to retire it from probably animal rights groups and whatnot.

So that lead to Frond to decide that it’s time for a new song to replace the old one and it looks like he wants the students to make their own as a competition with the lucky one, or duo, be chosen by the end of the week via applause with the highest noise being the victor. That and their own plaque that would pretty much be pointless and nothing more than a memento. And that shines the lightbulb above Tina’s head as she has found her opportunity to be remembered throughout time by jumping into the race to create and perform the song. Her and everyone else in the campus, so it looks like we got ourselves a singing competition folks. Wagstaff Idol...cue the American Idol theme. However once the students leave to prepare to write and perform their end of the bargain, Louise sensed that something is off about all of this and why it’s the students are not going to partake in this whole thing will be choosing the song from the competition. That’s where she headed on down to Frond and asks him what’s really going down with this whole shebang and found out that let’s face it, think we know why the voting age can’t be lowered. Louise alerts both Tina and Gene that handing the power to the kids when it comes to choosing the school’s new song is pretty much going to end in disaster. Meaning that they’re gonna pick the dumbest, most offensive, and wrongfully executed song from the mind of the kids. In America, we call it democracy. Everywhere else, pretty much a head banging on the wall when it comes to how the process works. Well it’s that or the other option that Wagstaff might be going for. By the way, what was the backup option to count up vo...

Oh come on! Really? I mean, no offense Iowa, I’m sure you’re a...state...but have y’all caused enough damage in the voting process in this primary season?! Yeah so it’s the lowest common denominator that get to choose the new song, I.e. the kids of Wagstaff. Meaning that it’s Tina vs Louise and Gene vs everybody to be picked for the whole ordeal with the winner, through literal downright voting in the hands of the students, get their song picked. Yeah, this is really what democracy looks like everyone.

So we get a glimpse of what the Belcher kids are doing in their spare time making songs with Tina trying to come up with lyrics and unlike coming up with the plot to her erotic friend fictions, coming up with song ideas isn’t the easiest task known to date. And of course, she heads on down to what Gene and Louise are doing with their end to create a song with Gene coming up with the noise through his keyboard and Louise with lyrics and apparently, things are might be going towards their direction and with the song where the two words, rather four, in the lyrics being poo-poo and pee-pee. Sound like a song that would, pun intended, would go down the drain but let’s not forget coming from Louise, lowest common denominator gets to choose the song. So again, looks like the whole contest might be going towards Louise and Gene’s direction, leaving Tina with a massive disadvantage during the song contest to replace the old piece. Not the way for her to be remembered as second fiddle when it comes to building a legacy.

Onto the next day as the writing process lingers on inside the music room within the school campus, we have Gene and Louise coming into the room and it looks like they, along with Tina, aren’t the only ones who are competing for the title of person who became responsible for song that might haunt the school for a generation where we have Gene being greeted by Courtney, who also trying to have her song picked by trying to hit a high note. Look at that, the first Courtney appearance...with Alex being absent...huh. First time in a massive while and take it with a grain of salt when it comes to how Courtney was greeting Gene. I don’t see it as flirty like she still has a thing for him, god forbid, more of a friendly gesture, titling towards rival territory since this is a competition, so either way, there’s your Courtney for this season. Also Rudy also jumped into the race as well and although his doctor ordered him to not do that if he want to continue on living, so he decided to sing/talk, rather talk while music is playing in the background for anyone who is not a fan of singing but are forced to do either wise, mostly to save his skin and live to see another day. And it’s not just both Rudy and Courtney who are competing, also both Tammy and Jocelyn as a duo and same for Zeke and Jimmy Jr in hope their song gets picked to replace the old one that is now banned. Oh yeah, and Henry’s there but now in background position...cardboard cutout, let’s go with that. And now, to the first round of the competition, or in this case, the audition rounds of idol before a lucky few get picked to go to Hollywood. And if it’s Idol, might as well be Simon Cowell (not really though).

Beginning with Tammy and she pretty much lists everyone in locker order, mostly to get the most votes by appealing to everyone just by listing their names like they just won the lottery or some shit. Also say what would happen if your song does end up make the cut and then a new flock comes in year after year huh? Pretty sure that’s going to get people to the move and feel motivated over the whole thing in a sarcastic manner that should probably be practiced at the mirror one too many times. Next!

Onto Jocelyn we go and uh, yeah. I’m no expert songwriter but if there’s like a song where the only lyrics is “whoa” like the record machine is broken and the machine was old and rusty. Just because Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up” started off with “oh” one too many times, and that was an earworm of a start, this? Yeah...don’t want to sound harsh but try again, add more words so that people think that we’re not doing a gospel that pretty much going to turn old in the first few seconds. Next!

Zeke and Jimmy Jr get their turn and it’s mostly them rocking out like it’s the 1990s and go all Bill and Ted by playing air guitar or rather like playing Guitar Hero set on medium mode and try not to fuck it up and taking things too real. I mean, do give them credit for going at it and nothing wrong with best buddies doing what they love but will this really be the choice for the school song to replace the old one? Well if you saw the episode already...you already know the result. Until then, might as well form an air band at a garage and wait until the county fair open up in the Fall. Also, long pause for one of the words for the song being “I wanna be inside of you”...really long pause on that one. Next!

Oh god Courtney, okay um...at least she tried, so there’s that. Actually no, girl may need some work when it comes to hitting the high note. I mean Courtney...you had a musical once! That pretty much merged into Gene’s to prevent the fall musical night to be shut down. You were in that Mother’s Day thing in Season 7, in Gene’s version of that play. And sure, don’t want to forget the credit gag from Season 9 at the end of Roller with both Gene and Alex as support but this? Apparently, everyone wants to be the next Mariah Carrey or Ariana Grande and try to hit the high note, this is what it is now when it comes to this? I miss my boy...no not Alex, the other one. You know who I’m talking about. And no, I’m not pinning blame onto her congenital heart condition from preventing her from hitting the high note. Does it? I mean I’m not a doctor but does the heart thing pretty much prevents her from hitting the note or it’s pretty much her singing voice needing some work? Next!

Onto Rudy we go and...well, the kid did say that if he sings then, it’s pretty much lights out for him. I uh...got nothing. Placing my money on Rudy on this one for the song contest. Even though the song has been already been decided at the end, yeah my money should’ve been on Rudy for that because...well it’s Rudy. No bias here, end of story. Next!

And then we get to Louise and Gene with their song, “The Poo-poo Pee-pee song”, since of course, the lowest common denominator gets to choose the song by the end of the week and their song that they created just by overnight might be shoo-in, but Frond doens’t think after listening to this and the others and now in need of some aspirin and releases everyone to continue working on their song. Though there is one person who have not perform theirs during the whole audition process and no, it’s not Henry since we haven’t seen him in action and pretty much cardboard box.

It’s Tina, who have some massive amounts of problems when coming up to the lyrics and how it should be executed. She performed the song, despite missing lyrics, and that of course lead to Frond to believe that he found the perfect song to replace the old one. And if Frond thinks that Tina’s song, despite being 10% finished, is the one that he likes, you could probably declare this race over, but the kids will decide the fate of that and others’ song for this whole thing. That and Frond now intervening and help Tina out by completing the writing process, in which Tina don’t want any part of the whole him helping, or in real terms, cheating, but it looks like that’s now going to be stuck with her all the way to the next day and if her song does get picked with the kids not knowing that Frond helped her out, oh boy, that would be a pretty big asterisk in Tina’s conquest for a legacy.

Onto the next day where everyone continue on with working on their songs for the big day from Courtney still trying to hit that high note after failed to do at her first try to now Tammy and Jocelyn working together but looks like falling out might be happening between the two over the writing process. Frond comes in and alerts everyone that the big day is nigh with the AV club setting things up for the voting process and that’s Louise comes in and senses another issue, mostly when it comes to the phrase “stalwart”, in which leads to one person’s song whose lyrics also have that word added into the sheet. Thus leads to both her and Gene to interrogate Tina, who did stayed behind after everyone left to continue what they’re doing and brought up how her song went to the two siblings after school yesterday. In which Tina tried to deny it and thinks that she did all the work herself without any help at all. Except knowing Tina, she’s bad at keeping secrets. Bad at the fact that she’s cheating her way to victory. I mean, the Astros kept it in secrecy for three years and all it took is to be exposed by the Nationals in the World Series and a former player exposing them during the off season. Patriots didn’t even keep their cheating ways for that long, recently with another spygate when filming the Bungles. Point is, Tina is now getting concerned about the whole thing that now her siblings are putting pieces together, if not, knew already that Tina is conspiring with Frond to get her song to be picked.

That causes Tina to enter Frond’s office and telling him that this whole thing with her song has to stop. The cheating needs to end...to keep it short and simple, the campaign has to end. And it’s best for her to not be considered a fraud over the guidance counselor taking over the writing portions of a student’s song that could last for generations. Tina want to do the right thing and not accept Frond’s help with the song. But he disagrees because he likes Tina’s song because it’s appropriate and doesn’t want a song that is all about poop or have a song that isn’t really a song or no song really just because the kids have to choose which one fits and tiny minds have the most power. And that where’s Frond decided to come up with the most sinister thing to come up to date. You think the sign stealing scandal from the Astros or rigging an entire primary in a most important election in history courtesy of the DNC was bad, take a load of stealing applause. Stealing applause to make Tina the automatic winner with recording sounds from a basketball game. Like...why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why in the literal fuck would you even think about this might be a good idea?! So in “Drumforgiven”, it’s play chicken. In “A Fish Called Tina”, it’s make people uncomfortable and go overboard. And in this episode, it’s stealing your way to win a contest. But why though? But why?

Next day, the day of the contest where the song gets chosen with Tina handing over the recorded audio of the game, despite that it was a very low scoring game between Wagstaff and the rival school, finding out that Jimmy Jr is a part of the team and they kept the running. They kept the running from “The Gene Mile”. Thought it was a one-off joke and possibly due to his sprained butt. But...okay, guess we’re doing this now. Pretend that his normal running that we see prior to “The Gene Mile” never existed. Anyway, Tina handed over the audio to Frond so when its Tina’s turn to perform, he’ll use it and influence the meter so that she gets an easy win. However, once she goes to the seating area where the other contenders, including both Gene and Louise are at, beginning to feel nervous about all of this with Gene and Louise talking things out with their older sibling and of course, they found out that Tina did indeed cheat but of course, not too late to back out now as everyone now perform their song for the contest. Starting with Courtney, who finally hit that high note she was trying to aim at...only to have a hack attack by the end of the song, which the machine gives her a 3 out of 10. Then Zeke and Jimmy Jr with their song and what a surprise, it got a 6 leaning towards 7 out of 10. Now it’s a race. Rudy then gets a turn with his talk/sing combination and that gives him a solid 4 out of 10 in the clap-o-meter. Then to Tammy, who signs her song and mentions Jocelyn at the end, so consider that a tender moment and the meter awards her a five. So far, Jimmy Jr and Zeke are in the lead with 7, Tammy 5, Rudy 4, Courtney 3. Now to Tina and if she either pull out from the thing or continue on and be accused of being a fraud and a cheat.

She went on to the stage and just as she was about to perform, she decided to have a small speech about the whole thing from start to finish that may somewhat inspired some people but pretty sure everyone here have a small attention span and that’s where Tina begins to sing her song but now feels like a massive nervous wreck and there’s both Gene and Louise come into the picture and help their sister out to save her skin when doing the song, the unfinished one, the one where she did before getting Frond’s help. Mixing both songs from the three siblings thus resulting in them getting a 5, tying with Tammy for second place. I mean, it’s better than commit cheating with an audio, which Frond accidentally turned it on before turning it off before anyone in the audience or on the floor noticed. And thus, with the final scores of the contest, it looks like the song courtesy of both Zeke and Jimmy Jr will be the new song that will stick like glue for a generation and await for controversy in like a hundred years. So congrats to Jimmy Jr and Zeke for having their song being the one that will replace the old one and of course, just be thankful that Tina bowed out at the last possible minute. Onto the subplot.

While the kids deal with coming up with a new song, Bob and co have to deal with more of the usual shit coming from Jimmy Pesto when he noticed an installment of a new awing outside of his restaurant, though pretty sure that isn’t like the thing where people like to show it off like comparing backyard decorations and say that you have a clean and beautiful lawn but your neighbor somehow one up you because they installed a pool. But to Jimmy Pesto, it’s pretty much another take of him being better than Bob over everything but we already know where this is going with. Dumbo here thinks that he’s a hotshot and think that he’s better than Bob at everything but we all know that he ain’t hot shit and ends with either Bob giving the victory or ends with a ceasefire.

Back at the restaurant and just as it was going to be a normal day at the restaurant gone ballistically wrong with the three, being Bob, Linda, and Teddy, can’t see straight due to a bright light that somehow causes them to be blinded or in this case, hard for them to see. And that’s mostly due to the awning that Jimmy Pesto just installed. Found out that the awning is made of used Ferrari bumpers, meaning that it’s probably either plastic or aluminum or fiberglass, whatever that is, and that pretty much causes the rays of the sun to shine bright onto the awning and resulting in the restaurant being shined bright and causing Bob, Linda, and Teddy to be flashed. Though I sure that they can’t be the only ones who are somehow being felt victim to the whole thing. There has to be other businesses within the vicinity of Ocean Avenue to also be hit by the sun to the awning. Probably not the best thing to view during a solar eclipse. By the way, whose bedroom is by the distant radius of the full blast of...and it’s Gene. Yeah probably something that Gene don’t want to wake up every morning as long as that awning still stands. Bob tries to get Jimmy Pesto to take the awning down due to the light hurting the restaurant, but of course, he wouldn’t listen and has to continue to suffer from the awning.

Teddy tries to go old school when it comes to blocking the sun from hitting the window by having him cover the window with a giant piece of cardboard to prevent the rays from hitting the place and has to hold on until, let’s say until night falls, which would probably tired the guy out but has to do it help some friends out, so nothing wrong with that, even if it means having your system beginning to shut down. However if you already forgot how science works, the sun can pretty much heat up the thing and causes Teddy to let go of the cardboard and back to square one they go. Would say install shutters or wooden boards but even that wouldn’t be enough. And unless you’re praying for a cloudy or rainy day to have things to go back to the way it went, you’re pretty much stuck with that stupid awning.

So it looks like putting up various newspapers to block the sunlight from the awning becomes the next thing to combat it and it looks like things are looking somewhat good for the three however, when a random customer comes into the place, he thinks that newspapers being put up on the windows and doors means that the place is fully shut down, in which Bob and Linda try to reason with the guy that they’re not closed, read the sign. Talk about mistaken status coming from that guy but it’s just him, but also a real estate lady coming in and thinks that the restaurant is empty. Again, telling them that it’s still open. Of course, back to square one once again when Bob takes the papers off the window and thus showing the two the awning. Again, no match against that awning. So it looks like they’re running out of options here when beating the awning and the powers of the sun.

And thus leads to them fighting fire with fire with Bob holding a mirror while wearing sunglasses to avoid getting blinded a la solar flare since the awning reflects the sunlight to the restaurant, then Bob would use the mirror to reflect it back. Not knowing that if someone were to either walk by or comes out from Jimmy Pesto’s would probably going to have their retinas damaged as Bob awaits for the sun to have its beam to hit the awning to reflect and once the moment has arrived, Bob uses the mirror and reflects right back. Of course, the reflect maneuver falls apart when the sunlight that got reflected by the mirror that Bob was holding pretty much blindsided Trev, which causes him to collapse with the customer’s order down to the ground. Back to square one, now with paying for someone’s medical bills. That caused concern because Trev got hit by the blast and results in Bob, and later Linda and Teddy to see if he’s okay.

That and them telling Jimmy Pesto to take it down because they have enough of this shit because one too many times, it causes them to lose focus. Have the place to heat up. Try various ways to prevent the sun from hitting only fail not once, not twice, three times. Three fucking times they have to go through that. Jimmy Pesto still don’t want to take it down and trying to be as arrogant as he is but of course, here enter Trev to fact check and found out that he, meaning Jimmy Pesto, doesn’t like it as well despite he want the damn thing for the very start. Apparently, there were issues after the installement from the heat courtesy of the sun that also reflected to the restaurant to making echo noises and not because of that one time during the whole thing where Bob, Linda, and Teddy threw bread pieces onto it so bird poop can block the reflection. Oh yeah, there was that bird thing...never brought it up because it’s dumb to even talk about. Echoes and booming sounds during a storm that some people thought that the world was ending...no, but we’re getting there...soon...any moment now. So it looks like common ground has been found and that would result in Jimmy to throw the thing down the trash but he spend too much money over that and got nowhere to put it, not to mention, pretty much burned his wallet to the ground when getting it. So what to do with the metal made awning without throwing it away and feel bad over the spending? Reuse the thing but turn its attention to the urinals. Urinals. That’s one way to reuse the metal made of used Ferraris by pissing all over it, flushing it, and give it a clean wipe. I apologize to the female readers to show how urinals work, that won’t happen again.

Reaction/Thoughts:

So all and all, what do I think about this week’s episode of Bob’s Burgers. Again, another solid episode we got here from this season. Two in a row within a span of seven days of its premiere. And of course, it feels like a Tina episode rather than like have every student, not just the Belcher siblings, compete to see whose song will be chosen that could last for a generation. Almost feels like an apology letter has to be made following what happened with “A Fish Called Tina” being a total train wreck.

The kids, being Tina, Louise and Gene, Jimmy Jr and Zeke, Tammy and then Jocelyn, Rudy, and Courtney to name a few, did give their all to compete to have their song chosen. Sure...they may need some work whether if it’s Courtney trying to hit a high note or Rudy doing the talking and not the singing if he want to continue to live to see another to even Jimmy Jr and Zeke doing their retention of 90s hair bands and Louise and Gene using the idea of the kids choosing the song for the contest by having two words onto the lyrics.

But of course, it’s the Tina show for this main plot with her trying to cement herself and wanting to be remembered all because of her missing picture day one too many times and the song contest to replace the old one that is now deemed as offensive to some, but of course, had some problems and almost cheated her way to a victory that might as well put a massive asterisk onto her lifelong quest of the week but at the end, she didn’t get chosen despite getting help from Louise and Gene at the end, but at least she didn’t cheat her way to be remembered, so that’s plus. That and Jimmy Jr and Zeke ended up being the ones whose song gets picked and now that will last for a generation...or until one of the students in the future find one of the lyrics of the song to be deemed offensive.

Subplot, once again, did not disappoint. It’s rare to see it and sure, it almost feels like it’s following the same formula when it comes to the idea of a plot of the episode, being main or sub, with both Bob and Jimmy Pesto duking it out which ends in either a Bob victory or a truce, with this one ending with a truce, but at least it was enjoyable to say the least. It’s your basic trial and error when tacking the awning that is made of pure shiny metal from Teddy trying to covering it with cardboard to newspaper cover to even reflecting the beam back only to hurt Trev, don’t worry he’s fine though he may need to be checked for possible signs of eye damage, at least thing whole got blown over right away. Though I feel like come tax season, which is like now, pretty sure that’s going to bite Jimmy Pesto right in the ass for the awning even though it’s now going to be used for the urinals. At least the subplot is fine. Superb. Nothing else to say about all of this.

So final thoughts, another solid episode in a span of two weeks. The main plot did not disappoint and pretty much serves as an apology letter for what happened with “A Fish Called Tina”, mostly when it comes to Tina. So I guess apology accepted unless they begin to fuck it all up again in the hands of another writer. And of course, a subplot that did not disappoint and somewhat enjoyable at best. So I’ll give “Wag the Song”...

A 9 out of 10. Another nine onto the list and on the top five so far in this season as we are now less than two months until another summer hiatus coming our way. Another episode airs this upcoming weekend and... it’s a Gayle episode. Get ready for that as Linda and Tina supports her by heading down to a yurt, which is like some sort of tent, where she becomes the head honcho of an art retreat as Louise and Gene must find a lost cat for a reward in the fifteenth episode of Season 10, “Yurty Rotten Scoundrels”.
